Ужасно

Inital impressions were bad from the start. In order to set it up I had to take it to my IT department. They were amazed at the terrible users manual but managed to format it for my PC and Raid1. Once I got it home, and got over the shock about how loud it was I transferred my 200 gig of files. Then, the next day this drive failed! The obnoxious orb started flashing red/blue and I was also getting the forbidden blue screen with warnings. From what I could make of it that meant one of the drives failed. Three strikes. Done. I returned it for the WD My Book Studio Edition II. Smaller, quiet and seems to work fine. Also less $$.

The reason why to buy this drive is if you want to use Firewire 800- a much faster interface than USB 2.0. Macs come with firewire built in, and this way it doesn't occupy one of your USB ports. So, get this if you've got a mac or anything with firewire, instead of the less expensive 1Tb drives that only have USB 2.0. Or, if you want to stack them- that works too.It was easy to hook up and works seamlessly with Apple's "time machine" backup software. I've only had it for 2 months, so I can't comment on long term reliability, but it has a sturdy aluminum case, runs fairly cool, an eerie blue light and lots of interfaces! It seems to me that no matter what drive you research, they all have posts on failures. The LaCie has been around a long time and, based on some internet research, seems to be one of the better companies, but these are complicated devices with lots of moving parts, so some percent will always fail. The best part- it even comes with cables for each of those interfaces, so you're ready to go if you've got a USB2, Firewire 400 or Firewire 800. No complaints. It sits behind my mac and happily backs up everything. It fires up every now and then, backs up stuff through Time Machine, then spins down. Overall- it's very quiet. I don't know what's controlling it- I guess Time Machine?, but it seems to be doing the job for me.

design: rikiki's design is extremely simplistic and sleek. beautiful, if you like modern-style gadgets like me. it's most likely the smallest 2.5" drive you've ever seen in your life. the feel of the aluminum feels very nice. it's brushed and smooth.performance: 640gb is an amazing capacity for this size. i've seen 750gb and 1tb 2.5" external hard drives, but they are 1.5+ times thicker than regular 2.5" external hard drives. speaking of speed, it's not the fastest external hd i've seen, but it's definitely more than fast enough for movie use.two minor flaws: the edges of the aluminum case are very sharp, so carrying this thing around with other things would probably scratch the items touching the drive. second, the location of the usb port is sort of awkward. it will take up more space than you think on your desk, because the cable needs to take a turn to get to your laptop's usb port. by the way, the cable is very short.overall i would recommend this drive to anyone looking for a tiny external hd and cares about style. it's perfect for your jean pocket. but i wouldn't recommend it if you're going to indiscriminantly carry this thing with all sorts of other things you don't want to get scratched.UPDATEi've been using this drive for a couple of weeks now - i've had no heat issues with it (it gets warm but not hot) while writing 200+ gigs on it. it's a real pleasure to touch the case, more so than my unibody macbook pro. the brushed aluminum is a beauty.

If you only use this for USB 3.0, it is a good drive but did not know that it needed a 2nd USB cable that plugs into the power source for some computers that use USB 2.0. It's a bit annoying.

I bought the Mac version of this drive in the 500GB version 18 months ago for backing up my PowerBook G4. It was easy to install and functioned well for my purposes. I only use it about once-a-month for a manual backup of my personal computer. I consider this light usage and I turn drive off in between uses. The last time I tried to use it, the drive did not spin and only made a slight clicking sound. Now, this can happen to any product and I don't fault Lacie for it. My beef is with the ease or lack thereof in arranging for a warranty repair/replacement. Going to the Lacie website you must register for an account, fill out a questionnaire through support, never even finding the word Warranty Service anywhere. They offer a premium warranty for $50 or so, but the unit is advertised as having a 3 year warranty. In any event, there's a lot of obfuscation and rigamerole they put you through. Basically unnecessary steps. I eventually made the defect known through their support page and am currently waiting a response.Just to satisfy my curiosity, I went to Western Digital's website to see how they would handle a similar problem and found that after just a couple of clicks one could print up a Return Authorization from home and that they would even send out a new drive before receiving the old. If you are considering a Lacie product, I urge you to try this for yourself. Bear in mind that Lacie does not even mention warranty replacement on their website (maybe if you drill down through several layers a detective may find something). I've decided to purchase a WD drive for my Mac, while I pursue a replacement of my Lacie product. This is just my opinion but if something does go wrong with a product, I want to buy from a company that makes returns as painless as possible - not one that sets up barriers.

after about 2 years of owning my 500GB Lacie, the drive no longer powers up. I contact Lacie and did some research online and found out that the drive has a very common power supply problem. My girlfriend has the same drive and the same problem and they sent her a new power supply. This fixed her problem, but not mine. So Lacie recommended a data recovery website that I will have to take it to before they can do any work. The website wants $900 to recovery my data. In the meantime, my girlfriends drive kicks the bucket (same power problem), but this time using a new power supply didn't work. I ask customer service if they can just fix the power problem without having to format my drive and he just says no. He doesn't give me a reason why it can't be done. So now we are left with 2 harddrives that do not work, and a warranty that is useless. It has been a 2 month long email tag with the customer service rep. My warranty is up in November.Western Digital has been a much more reliable hard drive for us. I think we will stick with them from now on. Plus, WD doesn't have a giant brick power supply known for failures cluttering the wall outlet.

When I received the Lacie 2Big Quadra I was pretty excited to get it installed. Unfortunately, the installation manual is virtually useless and the software is outdated and poor. To reformat the drives you are to use the Setup Assistant software that is nowhere to be found on the disc I was provided. After a bit of work searching a few forums (which should not have been needed) I finally finished the installation. After all of that work I realized after a very brief period of use that this thing is far to loud. If you've owned the first generation PS3 you will have an idea of how loud it is. If you are within a few feet of it you will likely be annoyed. I uninstalled the software, boxed it up, and shipped it back. I'll stick to WD and Seagate.

Computers have been a large part of my life since 1987; the year I started fixing computers professionally. Since then I have purchased many many hard drives, both Internal and External. Most of the External HDs and Optical Drives (CD/DVD) purchased for my own use carry the LaCie brand and I strongly recommend LaCie to my customers for their reliability. LaCie HDs just feel right when powered up and running. I am again pleased with this 1TB Quadra Hard Drive. Get one (or two), especially if you're a Mac Power User.

I generally like the unit, however, my biggest gripe is that I cannot for the life of me get the eSATA connection to work which was a main selling point for me. This might be more my motherboard's controller's fault but I am not sure. If your motherboard uses a JMICRON controller for the external sata this unit may not be for you...of course I can't guarantee that. Otherwise, I think the unit is OK. I'm fairly tech savvy as I build my own PC's but I still don't think I am off-base when saying set-up (except for eSATA) is pretty simple. The backup software is OK as well but I don't really have anything to compare it to.

The subject line sums it up. I did see some reviewers complain about noise and others mentioned it was not noisy. Both are true. Here's the problem though. Once you use the drive and it gets warmed up, the fan volume really goes up. This may be a great and reliable drive, but not for home office use and belongs in an IT closet. Returning it back.Customer service is good, but the fact I had to call them in a way is bad. One of the rubber feet at the bottom was missing. It's really a sloppy job. They are like 0.1 inch wide and 1/2 inch long so even if they don't get dropped during packing etc, you are bound to get them off if the drive is moved around with the end result that it will become wobbly.Great looks though!

I can only agree with the previous report below. It is replacing a failed Seagate 1 gb Freeagent drive. The drive has been working fine for about a month now.It feels VERY sturdy. It is heavier than other external drives I am familiar with.It is only slightly warm to the touch when running. The all-metal construction with the exterior ridges seems to do a good job of keeping it cool.It is VERY quiet. If not for the blue light I couldn't tell that it was turned on.Even when I put my ear right next to it I can hear very little. Even when it is actively seeking it is basically silent. There is no fan.It does make a few noises when starting up or shutting down.I THINK one of the noises I hear is the heads parking and unparking.I am using it as a Firewire 800 device right now.

I bought this thinking it was one of the best for video and just a sturdy product. I had the first for about 2 weeks and then it suddenly stopped mounting on my mac. I tried everything and finally ran disk warrior before giving up on the non repairable mac portion. I traded it in at Frys for a new one only to run into the same problem within a week.I will never buy another LaCie :(

I have read alot of bad reviews and I dont think they are true...great workmenship, well put together..The main reason I got the LaCie is it is super fast and here is the big 1----- IT IS A eSATA----- alot faster then USB and firewire...Most drives dont even offer eSATA any more and if they do --it will cost you...
