I found the drive so far to be dependable and fast enough for my video editing needs. Since I had experienced issues with the power supplies on LaCie drives going bad before the drive actually fails, after installing the new drives, I plugged them into a switchable power strip so that I turn off the power to them when the system is not in use. It seemed to make sense both in saving power and hopefully prolonging the life of the equipment. This would be a good drive for a low-budget video editor. Just make sure to back up your data!

For years I used LaCie drives and monitors in college and loved them. I used to use the old version of the D2 and always thought it was reliable. When I needed a fast new backup drive for my use with my Mac (running OSX) I went right to LaCie. The multiple interfaces on the quadra is really nice, especially when you could be upgrading your machine in the future. The fanless ribbed heatsink design it nice and keeps the aluminum case relatively cool and looks good at the same time. The SilverKeeper backup software that LaCie includes with their drive is simple and effective to use, unlike other companies like Western Digital. Also, unlike other companies, your data is saved into parts of the drive that you define, and you can access your data easily like using a USB flash drive. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone.

The hard drive works great. I haven't had any performance issues with it whatsoever, but ever since I've had them plugged into my system (2006 Intel iMac) it's bogged down my computer for some reason. What I mean by "bogged" is that any other device that I plug into my computer (ipod,thumb drive, card reader) takes a few minutes to be mounted to my desktop and from there it's always a slow transfer of data as well! I was thinking about this issue last night, about two months since I've had these hard drives and realized that the problem started at about the time I installed them. So today, I unmounted my two hard drives (both the Lacie 1tb models. A backup for the backup!) and plugged in a thumb drive and the thing immediately mounted onto my desktop!I have no idea why the hard drives mess with my system but they apparently do. I was using the Lacie 500 Gig models before these and I didn't have this kind of problem. Needless to say, it's a little frustrating that these models do that to my system. I already have 500 gigs on them. I'll live with them now but I wanted to warn others that the same might happen to you. If there are readers that have found a solution to this problem, I'd be grateful to hear what you did to fix it!

This drive died on me after the 4th or 5th usage despite being formatted properly. I lost close to 500 GB of data while I was copying data between two hard drives and the drive now gives an error saying it needs to be formatted for me to be able to use it. It literally died in the middle of a data transfer. Unfortunately, I found out quite late that this is a common problem on these drives and I am now going to have to spend a multiple of the cost of the drive to try to retrieve my data. Do not be fooled by the low cost and the good looks of this drive. As far as I am concerned this is garbage and I will gladly pay more for a bulkier, but more stable HD.

I purchased this hard drive because of reviews that said it was reliable. So far, it has not let me down. It has worked perfectly in backing up my iMac. It was super easy to set up. Just plug in and you are done.Cons: This hard drive is clunky and ugly. If you are looking for a portable hard drive, look elsewhere. This hard drive was not designed to be portable. But the thing I hate most of all is the blue light on the front. It is so bright it acts as a night light in our room. We had to cover it up.Once we fixed that annoyance, we fell back in love with our new hard drive.

I bought this 1TB drive about 7-8 months ago and it has performed solidly ever since. I dont use it every day, but it has always been pretty speedy, efficient, and reliable. Packaging and delivery was fine also.Looks good, does the job; a solid purchase.

I previously owned the Lacie Big Disk 1TB external harddrive. I have had that one for over 3 years now and it has worked great! I have had no problems with it whatsoever. The Lacie d2 Quadra 1TB that is just purchased is the newer version. It's about half the size of the previous one, better design, lighter, quieter, and supports esata.You can't go wrong with any LaCie hard drive. I have owned 3 in the past and never had a problem. They are extremely fast and reliable. Also, work very well with Mac!

When I first got the Lacie 1tb external HD for $149.99, I was already impressed with the sturdy, compact metal exterior (with the grooves acting as a heatsink). The package seemed oddly light, and the hard drive itself does not way that much (but still can cause some damage if dropped on something nice, like a toe).Inside the box, there isn't much stuff (some manuals, a support stand, esata and USB cables, and the hard drive itself). The hard drive is practically self-sufficient with it's built-in software already compatible with Mac OSX. The machine worked really well with the Time Machine software (that was the primary intended use of my hard drive). The HD is fairly simple interface, with a big blue button on the front to activate it. The on-off switch, however, is on the back. The 2x firewire jacks are a good choice on the part of Lacie, except the HD doesn't come with a firewire 800 cable to use the potential of the 800mbs transfer rate. For that, I purchased a Lacie cable separately. I've had the drive for a couple of days now, and it works very smoothly.Overall, the hard drive is slightly more expensive than some other hard drives, except it does not skimp on any of the engineering aspects, sturdy and otherwise impervious to everyday use, and the design aspect, matching perfectly with the aluminum facade of a Mac Book Pro. A good purchase with the perfect amount of storage and features an average user will need.

I've begun editing video files with Final Cut Pro 7 on my iMac and began to experience dropped frames during playback. Problem? My external media drive was too slow. So, I purchased this drive, connected it to my Firewire 800 port, and it screams. The dropped frame problem disappeared and the editing is smooth once again. I've owned it about a month now and have yet to have any reliability problems. But my long experience with disk drives from a number of manufacturers is that it is just a matter of time before it dies so I back up my files fiendishly and pray for the best. So far, this has proven to be a reliable performer.

Bottom line: I couldn't get the drive to work on my Dell XPS 16 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. The LaCie installation software returned a message that the drive had failed to initialize. I then went to Windows disk management to install the drive manually. The drive appeared in the disk management window as 1 TB of unallocated space. When I attempted to format the drive, the formatting program ran for a minute or two, then the drive simply disappeared from the disk management window. It literally vanished! Moreover, I could not restart my laptop with the drive's eSata cable connected. At that point, I returned the drive. I don't appreciate the waste of my time. However, I do appreciate Buy.com's excellent customer service. I emailed them for a return request that evening. Next morning, I had a link to a computer generated return label in my email. No hassle at all. Kudos Buy.com. LaCie, get it together.

I have been considering an external HD for some time now. Most of the research that I have done points to a couple of problems that I want to avoid: noise, and heat. Recent reviews of the LaCie d2 Quadra seem to indicate that the noise and heat problems have been greatly reduced in this HD. Well, I was suprised to discover that is not EXACTLY correct, the heat and noise problems have actually been totally eliminated. Pros: 1) The drive small and sturdy - the weighted base plate has a footprint of only 6.5" x 2.5". With the base plate attached, the HD has enough weight to prevent it from moving about. 2) The drive is very easy to set up - it is a total no-brainer and takes just a few minutes to follow the simple setup procedure. 3) The drive is quiet - there is no fan so there is no noise... period!!! 4) The drive does not get hot - with the unique "the whole case is a heat-sink" design this drive stays cool to the touch even after running all day long. 5) The drive just looks good - the drive design is very simple, but for some reason it looks quite stylish at the same time. 6) The drive comes with every connection that you could possibly need - I hate getting gear that does not have a cable or connector or what-not. That is not the case with this HD, it has every concievable connector included in the box. Depending on your computer's installation location an additional USB extension cable might prove helpful though. Cons: 1) A bit on the expensive side - but IMHO worth the extra money. 2) User Guide not complete - OK, there is very little that has to be in this tiny user guide, but there is no reason after setting up the HD that you would look at it and say "What the heck does that thing do?". Nowhere, either in the user guide, nor on the manufacturer's website could I find information on what the "Shortcut Button with Active LED" does (there is a one-line reference in the user guide that says "5. Install LaCie Shortcut Button software to enable the feature" but it does not tell you what will happen if you install that software). Now that button is like a big blue eye that always stares at you and blinks whenever the drive is active. The software to install the Shortcut button is pre-loaded on the HD (as is all the other required software for PC and Mac), just find it and run it from there. What the software does is give you 3 options to assign to the button: 1) 1-click backup, 2) 1-click launch of a user selected application, and 3) No Action - Button Disabled. 3) The drive is NOT really 500GB. After setting mine up it had only 465GB of storage. Now that is a lot of storage, but by the same token the missing 35GB is a lot of lost storage space. Removing all of the multi-language documentation that is preloaded on the HD made no difference what-so-ever, it is really a 465GB HD. That is about it. I love this HD so far, and would make the same choice again. I consider it a very smart buy.

I am new to Apple, this being my first a MacBook Pro. So I needed to purchase a Firewire harddrive that I could backup macBook Pros to. We have two macBook Pros to backup. The Lacie harddrive worked great. I really like the quad interface as I have a old IBM P4 desktop that has the older Firewire installed on it. So I can backup two Apple laptops and a windows based XP system all on one harddrive. Also like the auto mode where the drive hibernates when no device detected. Really have no negative comments as a backup harddrive should be very simple and require no extra software. In the case of the Windows XP I use Acronis to create a entire harddrive image to save.

I bought three of these back in 2007, and in less than three years, the power supplies on all three have failed. I wish I'd spent a few more bucks and bought something of higher quality.

I am a graphic designer and photographer and need alot of space since I keep my pics in the RAW format. I have the drive connect to an iMac 24" Intel and wirelessly to a Macbook. I partitioned the drive for both computers according to their storage capacity and set up time machine. It has been running flawlessly for a month now. I can't say that for other drives (not Lacie) that I've used in the past. There always seemed to be an inordinate lag time waking up or shutting down other drives. This drive just does it's thing and if it weren't for the blue light, you wouldn't even know that it is there. Great product! But what do you expect from Lacie?

The picture looks really cool, but in real life the aluminum seems a little yellowish in day light and does not match with a Macbook Pro's color at all. (Of course, I was hoping that they'd match.) The blue LED is not as bright as well, it makes the machine look quite cheap, actually. Maybe a 1 will catch people's eyes more, but I'll be just and give its performance more credit than look.It's bigger & heavier than I expected as well.

I bought this drive on the recommendation of [...] which rated it best drive in category. The only caution I would give is that if you are a Mac user and are planning to use the drive as a backup drive, make sure to choose the option to reformat the drive with the *GUID Partition Table* (for Intel Macs) or the *Apple Partition Map* (for Power-PC based Macs). If you don't do this you may not be able to boot up the computer from a full backup on the drive. For this reason, and also because the drive isn't the quietest available, I gave it only 4 out of 5 stars.

I first hooked this drive up to my computer with the Firewire connection. For some reason that was very slow, it would have taken hours to transfer 9 GB of data. I switched to USB and the transfer completed in minutes. I'm not sure if the drive or my computer was at fault, I've never used the Firewire port before.The drive occasionally made grinding noises. Once or twice, it disappeared from my list of drives on the control panel and I had to reboot. I also noticed that the drive platters were always spinning even after the computer had gone into sleep mode.I concluded that the drive was not be trusted and sent it back.

The only reason I gave it 4 (instead of 5) stars for reliability was because I haven't had any of them long enough to know if there will be problems sooner than other drives I've experienced. Other LaCie drives I've owned have always worked well for me, so I don't have an issue giving it at least 4/5.It is a bit bulky compared to the "pocket" drives, but those drives have MUCH lower reliability compared to full size drives like this one. I'd recommend against using the included stand. Any hard drive will fail quickly if it is subjected to the shock of falling over from "upright" to "horizontal". This drive has great heat dispersion built-in, just set it on a hard surface instead of a blanket or a pillow, and make sure it doesn't move while you're using it.The variety of included cables is GREAT! I wish other manufacturers would do the same.

Purchased a 1.5 TB drive as a Time Machine backup device for my wife's iMac. Installed easily and worked well enough... for six weeks. Will not mount, makes a 'zit... zit... zit... sound. Power Cycled... everything. No change. Drive is dead. Reported to tech support on the Friday before Memorial Day. We'll see how long it takes to get a replacement.

I've used Lacie external hardrives for quite awhile now. Never have they ever failed. I won't use any other kind. I highly recommend this hardrive if you're serious about backing up your files.
