I bought this drive to use with TimeMachine for backups for my MacBook. I first purchased a different brand of hard disk that didn't work properly, and I had to return it. This one just worked as it should from the moment I connected it. Because there is no fan, it is absolutely silent except when actively working, and then it is still pretty quiet. And did you notice that it is beautiful?The LaCie d2 Quadra comes with cables for all four interface choices; I am using the Firewire 800 connection. I have had this hard drive for just three or four months, so I can't testify to its long-term reliability, but so far I am delighted with it!

Don't know what I can say about an external drive other than it is exactly as advertised. The unit has a number of ports and LaCie gives you several cords so it's very versatile. I have several LaCie drives and they have always worked the way they are supposed to so I anticipate the same from this one. I was satisfied by the speed and packaging from the seller which is really important.

Easy to use, quick to setup and peace of mind. I was looking for something to hook up to a central server for all my backups and this did the trick. My biggest issue was the ability to replace the drive with a non LaCie drive should one fail. I believe you can actually do this, but it would void your warranty (they have a sticker on there to ensure that it wasn't tampered with).

I bought this array primarily based on it's design and claims of super quiet operation. Performance was good and easy to set up (though figuring out how to switch the raid levels took me a bit - I kept pushing the "button" on the back instead of using the tiny little Lacie key provided).However I'm mainly posting this to reflect my disappointment in the sound levels. I have a mac pro with a 4870 video card and 4 hard drives inside. From my desk I can BARELY hear a slight whir from it. This unit is noticeably louder than the mac pro and even more annoyingly the fan seemed to vary in speed frequently so the pitch of noise was constantly changing.In the end I returned mine as it was too loud for my needs. Given the premium price and design specifications, I think they need to work more on sound isolation. A pity because otherwise it was a nice unit.

I own several external hard drives(iomega-3, La cie-4) The most recent was the La Cie D2 Quadra and thus farhas proven to be a no brainer. I was able to transfer and redistribute with(eSata) ease and quickness data from my other drives to this one! As this one is to be used as a working drive for media editing before being archived. The biggest test with any external is what happens over time and I'm hoping that this solid and stable looking drive wont fail me....I'll keep ya posted>

This is a high quality storage device. Comes with all cables and is very easy to install. I read the other reviews about the unit being too loud..... When turned on this unit is very quiet..... Maybe the sound issue depends on which hard drive you end up with. Customer support was excellent..... I have my unit configured for RAID 5 and set up was a breeze. On the downside I had a drive go on me after six months. The issue took 3 weeks to resolve. I have to say Lacie was slow getting back to me with a replacement drive. Also, they sent a refurbished drive and not a new replacement. I suggest anyone purchasing this unit keep a spare drive laying around. If a drive goes on you don't hold your breath getting Lacie to replace. Thats why the rating of 4 rather than 5. Otherwise I love this device....excellent unit.....

This drive plugged into my FCP editing work flow seamlessly. It replaced a LaCie 250 Gb drive. Now that I am editing HD video (corporate and some broadcast clients) I need the hd space.Its profile fits my desk top too, doesn't take up a lot of space. And Firewire 800 is essential when transferring video from Flash (P2) cards.

I've only had this drive a couple of months, but so far it's working fine. I have a imac and I'm using time machine.I did have a problem with the initial drive sent out. It was just a bad drive out of the box.The return process with AMAZON was easy and quick. The new drive is fine so far.

I'm using the 1.5T Lacie with a MacBook Pro to backup data on Time Machine. It's fast (I'm using the Firewire 800 port) and well built. In my opinion the only downside is that it's a little noisy.

This is a great quality drive and is SO easy to setup. I am VERY happy with this drive. The only thing I found that could use work (and probably on the Windows side) is that rebooting Windows 7 and having the drive set to auto power will not boot up Windows 7. Switch the power switch to always on and Windows 7 will boot up fine.This is a great product! I plan on getting another one soon.

Everything the manufacturer claims about this product is true. It's cool, it's quiet, easy to use, great storage device...unless it suffers some kind of impact.My dog's tail knocked it off the coffee table. It fell 14 inches onto 4 layers of carpet and padding. Since I managed to catch part of it halfway down, the impact on the floor was minimal but the device was still rendered useless.It will now cost me more than twice what I paid for it, to have the data stored on the device retrieved by a professional (an expense that I do not mind paying for myself), BUT then I have to buy another one because LaCie's warranty doesn't cover this situation.IMO, a company that cares about customer service would have offered to replace the device, instead they refused and warned me to use a LaCie approved Data Retrieval Service or void my warranty. The device is a dead block of metal...which they refuse to repair. Who cares if I void the warranty. They don't care.In my opinion, if the device can't take a love tap...it's useless. I mean I dropped my 6 year old laptop down a flight of stairs while moving and it was fine...why can't this device be more impact resistant?I purchased this device as a "safe" backup for my confidential documents, because of it's compact size...I thought it would be easy to grab in case of fire, flood, or what have you. Now that I know the disk wouldn't survive an emergency, I do not recommend it.

As with all LaCie products I've owned, a very quality piece of gear with all the cables needed and decent instructions. Has worked smoothly and seamlessly since I first hooked it up. Kudos to LaCie once again!

I returned this hard drive because it was unacceptably noisy. Also, the base which attached to the bottom of the hard drive was warped, so the hard drive wobbled and did not sit flat on the desk. I purchased it to replace a 250mb LaCie hard drive which had worked quite nicely, and quietly, for 5 years, so I was somewhat surprised at the poor quality of workmanship in this new LaCie 1TB drive.

Works fine, great buy. Small, elegant, and lots of space. Easy to use (and it doesn't come with built in software like the Western Digital... which is extremely annoying). You can't go wrong with this little guy. Excellent for video, music, and backup.

I found the drive to be easy to set up and work with. I have a 500GB version of the same drive that I've used at home for about a year and a half now, with no problems.

I like this product, not to loud. Only complaint is the the Big Blue button doesn't work(I'm using this product with a mac), but I don't know what I would program the button to do if it did work.

No support yet for the Button for Windows. An annoyance, since Windows sees it and tries to install the driver. Took a while to get Windows to ignore it. Otherwise, the Lacie is working ok.

(about the LaCie 500gb)This drive is pretty awesome to begin with - great price, very sleek design, lots of space (labeled as 500gb, actual capacity 465gb, which is still pretty big, so it's acceptable). The only drawbacks are:1. The lack of a power button, as others have said. It would be much more convenient if they had included it in the design somehow, like in the back where the power plugs in, as that end doesn't need to be as bare as the rest.2. It runs VERY hot, not just warm, but *hot*. Granted, I do use my drives a lot as well, but usually my other older ones are only more than mildly warm at worst - I also have a AcomData 160gb bought in March2005 and a Maxtor 200gb bought in Dec2006 - while this one, the LaCie 500gb, gets so hot that when you want to "shut it off", it is difficult to grasp it in order to be able pull the plug. Note that my AcomData has a power button, and my Maxtor does not but handles well-enough without one, so that's why I figured when I bought the LaCie that even tho it has no power button, that it wouldn't really matter, lol. I did not count on it being too hot to touch.3. Slightly noisy.. well, it was quite a bit noticeable during the first few weeks that I had it, I'm not sure if it's still a bother now, (or maybe I've just gotten used to it, lol) but eh. It tends to stand out more when it becomes busy, like transferring files, etc.Again, wonderful product, just wish that it didn't overheat so much, other than that - love it! Will probably be buying a really small desk fan to aim at it in hopes of keeping it cooler and if that works, then I'll edit this to let you all kno.Update @ July 31 : I did indeed find and buy a small fan; found one at Walmart, it's about 5" tall and 6" wide, and since I store the LaCie on its side in back of the comp monitor against the tower, the small desk fan is neatly sitting behind the monitor as well, and aimed at the LaCie extHD. The desk fan is battery-powered (2x "D" batts) and I only use it for about five minutes to an hour at a time, every so often that I remember to do so, or notice the LaCie getting hot. The desk fan did not come with an AC adapter of its own, so I will likely be buying one so that I can keep the LaCie cooler more often (it actually does work! lol), as I do use it a LOT. And yes, the LaCie is still performing just fine too! xoxoGood luck with YOUR purchase! ;D

I am not very knowledgeable about the workings of a computer, and backing up, and I had problems figuring out how to use this product, and finally had no choice but to return it.
