Not a SINGLE Lacie external hard drive that I have bought has lasted more than three years. Today, my eighth Lacie drive failed. Like its predecessors, it will no longer mount and it cannot be reformatted. I am now convinced, based on my experience and those of the other negative posters here, that Lacie deliberately builds planned obsolescence into its hard drives. Either that, our they have incredibly sloppy quality control. Every time one of their drives fails, I lose valuable information. I am abandoning Lacie forever.

If you need a backup drive or just additional storage space, this is probably the best option available (or other d2 Quadra drives). I bought this to relieve the stress from my iMac's 320GB hdd.First, the quality of this drive is amazing. It's very solid, sturdy and has no fan! It comes with all the cables for each connection type. It stays very cool, even during continuous use.Second, the transfer speed is fantastic. I was getting sick and tired of USB2 and finally made the switch to Firewire. This had FW800 that seems hard to find for storage devices unless they are really expensive. I just wish my iMac had eSATA! The FW800 is incredibly fast though, I love it!I haven't upgraded to leopard yet so I use "Super Duper!" for backups and it was a snap with this drive. Every morning at 3:30am my iMac is backed up safely and quiety. I will be getting a second one very very soon for my growing digital video library. I also run my iTunes library from this drive and it works beautifully while keeping my iMac hdd free for applications and other things.CONS: Ok, if you have this in a bedroom where you sleep, the blue light on the front is BRIGHT. I just stand something in front of it and that works great but I wish they had a way to dim the light. If you work in a dark room (I do), it isn't bothersome.As a previous reviewer mentioned, you do only get approximately 700GB of actual space. This shouldn't reduce the rating on this item. ALL hard drives manufacturers advertise their storage space in increments of 1000, when it should actually be 1024. So 750GB / 1000MB / 1000KB / 1000B = 750x10^9 / 1024B / 1024KB / 1024MB = 698.492GB <-- Amount of actual space. This is because of the hard drive manufacturers, not LaCie.If you're looking for more storage or a backup drive, this is it. This is the best external hdd I've ever owned. I also bought an external dvd burner from lacie, which is fantastic. Firewire is awesome!

Opened the box, plugged it in, it sparked and smelled BAD!!!Not a good start. Who knows if it's any good, it's a doorstop now.

Really like the three way mode switch (Off, Auto, On) feature. I would consider the LaCie a professional external drive vs. a consumer external drive (usually smaller; lighter).

If you're looking for an external storage solution with eSata, this is a great solution for home offices and SMB. As a photographer and graphic designer, I've found myself going through hard drive space like cookie monster through chocolate chips (sorry, I have kids). This is also perfect for HD video editing and other video production purposes. If I had to knock the device at all it would be only for the fact that it does not offer RAID 6 (two-drive failure integrity) and there's no management console or anything of the sort. The only control over the device is what hard drives you stick in and what RAID option you choose with the dip switches. Other wise, I've found the array to be quite quiet, speedy, and seamless in operation when going in and out of sleep mode. You may notice a longer delay starting your computer while the device spools up the drives on power-up. The best external storage solution I've had.

As a videographer and photographer I need dependability and speed. I've had several LaCie drives over the years and they have performed very well. Expect a lifetime of about 2 years and ALWAYS back-up your important photos, videos and documents to tape or disk.

They rattle out of the box. Unacceptable. I opened one and the drive wasn't even in the slot. I sent the last d2 back to Amazon and got a new one - still rattles. It's back to G Tech drives for me.

The drive works fine. The power supplies are junk. We used to buy a lot of Lacie drives at work. I must have replaced over two dozen power supplies. Never again.

I've had this hard drive for about three years now and it works as perfectly as it did the day I bought it. No weird noises, no problems with shutting it off or going to sleep, no problems whatsoever. Other people say they have problems with this hard drive, but honestly, all drives will break down sooner or later. I bought two hard drives and back my stuff up on both just in case, but they work great and I've never had any problems. I plan to buy another one once this one finally dies on me, but that could be years from now at the rate it's going!

This is my second LaCie drive (first was 500GB a while back). Performance/reliability/speed/setup/compatibility/etc... all above par. I use this drive with Time Machine to backup my iMac (connected via FW800) and have had no issues. Will continue to buy LaCie drives as long as they continue cranking out quality drives.

I have had the drive for about two weeks now and it does exactly what I need it to do. It works well with Time Machine, feels solid, doesn't make much noise and looks pretty good. The large blue LED might be distracting if it were not for the fact that I have it far below eye level.

I needed a back-up for my MacBook Pro. This product is just right. For the price, you get a lot of space that backs up extremely quickly with no technical issues. The Time Machine software synced automatically and continues to back up my files automatically. I occasionally sync up an older MacBook Pro as well manually and have no issues there either. It's been a great purchase for my needs.

The Lacie Big Triple 500GB external drive was purchased three years ago to offer more storage and become my Media Drive, replacing smaller Maxtor drives (five years old). I used Backup software and TimeMachine to keep current backups of the iMac internal and Lacie Media Drive... Fortunately!!!The Lacie started clicking, and after some research, and no customer support offered by Lacie, I found out that there was a power supply issue with these Lacie's. I decided to keep using the drive till total failure. This happened about six months later. No files were lost because I ran backups continuously.I have ordered replacing Seagate and Maxtor drives. I will never purchase or recommend Lacie to any of my clients or for personal use.Shame on you Lacie not extending Customer Service and replacing the faulty power supplies on your drive assemblies.

Bought the LaCie two months ago because I needed an external drive for my multi-gigabyte Final Cut Express projects... which had been rapidly consuming all available space on my computer's internal drive. [24" iMac 2.8ghz running OS 10.5.x]It was mindlessly easy to set up [in my case via Firewire 800]. Plug the LaCie's power cord into a wall socket; connect the drive and the LaCie with the Firewire cable; turn it on. That's it.Without any tweaking on my part the iMac recognized the LaCie as if it were a prodigal son coming home, and they have been working together flawlessly ever since.One unexpected and truly useful extra: the LaCie comes complete with any connector cables you might need included in the box -- Firewire 400/800, and USB 2.0. Very nice touch.

I purchased my LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB drive from Amazon 19 months ago and have been using it as a back-up with Time Machine with my 24-inch iMac. It has performed flawlessly until 3 days ago when it failed to mount on my desktop. Since I was still under warranty, I called LaCie to see about sending it back to them. The lady I spoke with explained that some of the power supplies for the d2 have been failing or not providing enough power to power up the drive. She said she would send me a new power supply to try before I returned the drive for repair. I received the new power supply via FedEx today and plugged it in and the d2 worked immediately. Great customer service!

I gave the LaCie 301440U D2 QUADRA EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE 500 GB 5-STARS because 1) it is user-friendly and very much plug-and-play 2) installation via its software or your own backup software is virtually automatic and doesn't require much more than making a couple of selections 3) has a small footprint, stands vertically and narrow, has a very soothing topaz blue light so you know its operational and the external case is finned with grooves to disseminate heat but I can't detect any heat so it works! 4)Backs up your computer's hard drive automatically or manually (I chose auto mode)in the background 5)has a variety of hookup options (I'm hooked up using USB cable) and 6) it works with both PC's or APPLE Macs.This LaCie External Hard Disk Drive is beautifully designed and so easy to install. I'm using it on my primary PC desktop. The LaCie was recommended to me by a couple of friends who are graphic designers using MACs but they assured me the LaCie can be used across platforms seamlessly. And it does!

I completely blame myself for purchasing this product. I read the reviews and thought that it was just the 'complainers' writing in. Now I know. I will never purchase anything by lacie ever again. This drive, out of the box for less than a week, is dead and so now I must pay to possibly be able to recover the data. Unless you wish to be miserable, do not under any circumstances purchase one of these drives.

This is the third drive over 500 GB I have in use.This drive is quiet, fast and doesn't get hot. I'm using it to back up my Mac Pro tower.When purchasing a drive, I recommend you check the manufacturer's warranty. LaCie offers a longer warranty period than most, and, in my experience, I haven't needed to use it. With some other manufacturers, I haven't been nearly as lucky.

I plugged this directly into my Dell XPS600 motherboard's SATA sockets with StarTech 6 Ft. Shielded External eSATA to SATA Cable, M/M (SATA2ESATA6) , told the BIOS to turn on the 3rd SATA socket, and I am sucessfully transferring files at 95MB/s to and from my RAID 0 hard drive, which is far, far faster than my old Firewire 400 setup.This will become my primary backup hard drive and my old firewire hard drive will become my off-site backup hard drive that I will bring home from work once a week to refresh the files.I did not install the backup software that came with it or any of the cables that came with it (USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 AND eSata) because I am happy with SyncBackFree & BeyondCompare for backup and I needed the one cable they did not provide, nor did I expect them to.It seems to be a quality hard drive and very quiet.
