The core of my home media center is an Intel Core 2 Duo Apple iMac with a 500GB drive. I've been a Windows junkie for 15 years and finally gave in to the urge to go exclusively Apple for home media management last Christmas, and have never looked back. Apple TV to iPhone to Airport Extreme ... we're engulfed within the silver Apple, but that's another review. So when it came time to select storage for media and back-up, I didn't have the luxury of buying one with an Apple logo (sans Time Capsule). After a month of research and talking to other home media geeks, I selected these 2008 vintage LaCie Quadra drives. I bought two 750GB drives, placed them side-by-side via fw800, and dedicated one to iTunes media and the other to Time Machine back-up.They have been running 24x7 for 6 months under heavy use. The iTunes drive has been on almost constantly for the entire house - reading and writing media via several wireless MacBooks, iMacs and, of course, the Apple TV. And the Time Capsule drive has been backing everything up every hour, every day for the last six months. Both drives have done what they needed to do flawlessly with no user intervention. And as others have said, the set-up on the iMac took less than 5 minutes. So this geek is sold on LaCie. They perform extremely well and look very cool next to the iMac. OK, one annoyance, the blue lights on the front are always on and look like two spooky eyes in the dark. Other than that, don't hesitate to make the purchase.

At these prices and the importance of 'backing-up', I bought a second one and store it off site, only backing it up 1/mo. They are quiet and very clean looking.

I've only used my hard drive several times but so far I've been able to transfer all my files without any problems. It was easy to setup, looks good, feels hefty enough so it will hopefully last, and I love how it has all the possible connections I want. So hopefully this wont be one hard drive that will fail, even though technically all will at some point.

I purchased this product after carefully reviewing other RAID 1 capable units from Iomega and G-Drive, based on a good history with LaCie products at work, a nicer design, and the adjustable RAID configurations.Initial setup was a little problematic in setting the mirroring (RAID 1) option and getting disk utility to recognize the mirrored RAID, but on the second or third attempt it worked. Since then the drive is quiet (although louder than my new MacMini), and overall the noise level is dramatically lower compared to my older G5 tower. Throughput with Firewier 800 seems very speedy, transferring gigabytes of data while upgrading my computer.Overall its meeting or exceeding my expectations.

This is the first external hard drive I have ever purchased. It has a good look and I don't mind having it sit out on the desk. It blends in nicely. We only use it to back up things we really want like pictures and music and it works great for that. The transfer rate is reasonable and being that I am not a total computer geek reasonable is good with me. The files we save can be found when we need them, but since we use it for back up we don't go looking for files very often. We just keep saving files to the hard drive. One thing I don't like so much is all the software it comes with. It is not exactly easy to figure out. The 1 touch button on the front for backup...yeah, still working on that one. We use it with a Mac ibook g4 and I found it easier to just partitioned the drive and drag and drop the files I want to keep. Maybe it is just me but most mac apps work seamlessly and this package for e-z back up is less than e-z to install and operate. All in all we are glad to have all our music and pics backed up.

October 2011. My last word on LaCie is that after 3 years of Time Machine use, this external drive died. My experience with LaCie is certainly no better than similar experience with WD, Samsung, and Seagate. Bottom line is that I can't really say if LaCie is better or worse than anybody else, but I can't see any reason to pay LaCie their 50% price premium.********My original review below (August 2008)**********************I bought this external drive as an iMac "Time Machine" disc. Installation was extremely quick and painless. So far (after a few weeks {edit: now 1 year and still working}) everything seems to be working fine. It is quiet and it is nice looking. As everyone undoubtedly knows, one can buy 500GB external USB drives for about $100, so why would anyone pay a 50% price premium? In my case, the answer is that I know that the vast majority of disc drives out there are junk. I have been burned twice by early life failures, and there are plenty of DOAs from most vendors. I am just desperate for reliable hardware, and am willing to pay the premium. Now, I've been told that LaCie buys their drives from major OEMs, so maybe this is a futile effort, but I am willing to try.Normally, i wouldn't have bothered writing a review for this. After all, it's not like it's a television or something. You buy it. It either works or it doesn't. It either lasts or it doesn't. But I figured that disc drives have gotten so bad that we consumers need to band together and publish our results, and hopefully drive the worst suppliers out.So, for me and LaCie, so far, so good. Better than my last 2 hard drives.Update: After a year, still working.Final update: Died after 3 years.

I purchased the drive four months ago (I see that a newer version is now available), and it works, but squeaks every time the drive activates on startup and when Time Machine backs up data. The drive was sent in once, but the repair team at Lacie claimed they didn't hear the squeaking, and the drive was returned to me ... still squeaking. Useless subsequent suggestions included trying the drive on a different electrical circuit, but my computer setup is in my office; the possibility that it might not squeak in my garage is irrelevant. The discussion is ongoing, but even if Lacie does replace the drive (doubtful at this point) it will be with a reconditioned unit, not a new one, and I will have paid shipping twice. This experience has been a disappointment, because I have an older Lacie drive that has worked flawlessly since the first day. Some reviewers have had no problems and rate the unit highly, but be aware that more than a few buyers have had problems and like me have not had a good experience with Lacie support. It is unlikely my next drive will be a Lacie.

I own several La Cie external drives. No issues until I purchased this one. When I powered it up, I heard the drive trashing, then then I smelt it, then it caught fire with a two inch column of white smoke coming out the top. I'm guessing that a silly mistake happened at the factory. Trying a replacement.

I bought this review after my Western Digital MyBook hard drive bit the dust and I was dissatisfied with their customer service. (I wonder if part of the problem was that the WD drive is always on. This drive, by contrast has an on/auto/off switch. I prefer to leave the drive off unless I want to do a backup since I'm not a constant user of my computer.) Anyway, this drive is whisper quiet - a top priority for me - since the design doesn't require a fan. It's quick, unobtrusive, and perfect for backing up my iMac with Apple's Time Machine automatic backup program. When you first plug in and power up the drive, it creates a program on your screen that gives you options of formatting for Mac or Windows, and it has some other software as well. It includes Retrospect Express backup and a one-touch feature to use with Retrospect Express, but since I prefer using Time Machine I just dragged out these folders from the drive and saved them on my computer's drive in case I might want to use them someday. The triple interface option is good for me - I prefer backing up over FireWire and leaving my USB ports for other purposes.Anyway, I've used the drive for several days now and am 100% satisfied. I used to own a LaCie hard drive years ago and I remember that that was a quality unit as well.

I am thoroughly disgusted with Lacie. Had my drive for over 2 years and stopped being able to be recognised in explorer, Faulty data socket on back panel. Lacie not prepared to help but suggested sending it to Prestige computers. This I did cost over ?20+ to send to be told there is a faulty board but Prestige can't get parts from Lacie! Only option is to wait and see if someone's broken drive comes in and he can use the parts off it !Disgusting that Lacie turn around and say they have an agreement with their suppliers not to sell to users !! I have asked to take this further. Anyone out there who has a broken drive they don't want anymore? Please get in touch if you do. Thanks

UPDATE:Amazon must have seen my complaint and I received this in record time. Thank you Amazon! 5 stars if this drive is as good as all my other Lacie drives.Old review:-------------This is a deceiving item listing... as all Lacie drives appear to not be available for next day shiping - When you go to order this if you look closely, they will add an additional day on the shipping. When you call customer service they say that they are "not readily available from the warehouse". The main reason I use Amazon is for the quick shipping. This item should not be listed as "in stock".

I purchased the D2 Quatra, and it seems to work pretty good, it linked up to my pc (xp) with no problems at all.... the "One Button" software they provide does not work at all and customer support on helping me get the One Button software to work is horrible...I keep getting errors when I install "One Button" that no one seems to know how to fix. But the LaCie "BACKUP" software works great, that is the main reason I purchased a LaCie.... I am buying another LaCie because it is a good and reliable extra storage unit for the price... In this day and age you need a back up of your back up... The nice thing about this unit is that it is very quiet and lays flat and the only way I know it is working is because it has a very slight warmth to the touch... Like others, I have spent hours researching external hard drives and I also use two external Western Digitals(3 year old units)... I like WD but I wanted something that had a good review for backing up data, with "specific software" that was made to work with the Hard Drive unit... I currently back up my whole computer plus the external WD's data on to my LaCie.. I think it is a wise gamble on this LaCie drive, because nothing is a sure thing when it comes to hard drives!

Excellent storage device. I store large photo files and have previously filled up a Lacie 1TB hard drive. I was looking for another firewire hard drive so I could daisy-chain them together (effectively - 3 TB). The machine, so far, is fast and reliable. And since I own a Mac, it has had no problems communicating with it instantly and effectively.

I have bought smaller (250gb) LaCie drives for years..., used another 10 120GB for use in a lab at work, and used the 2.5" portable for archiving photos and docs to take to and from work. I've always been a fan of the LaCie drives, until now...I bought a 1TB drive about 6 months ago, and it died over the weekend. What will the cost be to have a reliable data recovery company take a crack at retrieving the data? $800-$4400!! More if they get a full recovery, less if they only recover some files.I think the biggest problem with the drive is the RAID 0 design, which means if one drive dies, you lose all. Maybe this should have been obvious to me as a weak point in the system, however the marketing materials don't explain these details... it's a black box system that doesn't reveal the internal config.I am still dealing with support now, so I don't have the resolution to report yet, but I haven't been impressed so far with my 45 minute wait time to speak to tech support, or a guy who continually yawned at me like I was boring him to death with my sad story of losing about 2 months of work that I'm in a panic about. This guy must have yawned 6-7 times in the 10 minutes we spoke. Comon dude... drink some coffee, or stop pulling all nighters with your LAN party buddies. If it turns out the power supply is the culprit, which is one thing he said COULD be the problem, I'll be much happier, having had some annoyances for a few days, but recovering the thousands of $$ of time of work on the drive.Would I recommend this drive? Not any more... Not at the price and reviews I'm seeing from others... I'd go with 2 1TB drives now, striped RAID 1. It's a little more of an investment, but safer, and also time is valuable!Another product I'm really interested in looking at is the new DROBO product. It's $500 for the device alone, and add 4 1TB dives, and it would cost about $1600 total, but it would give you 1.5TB of redundant and fast storage. The Drobo system allows you to scale the drives up as drives get larger and cheaper, so you don't have to start with the top end drives if you don't like... I have 2 320GB drives I can throw in to start, and then add more drives as the need grows.Sorry for the ramble... just killing time while I try to figure out what I'm going to do to recover that lost data.

I've owned two of these now, and both have failed in less than a year of use. I switched to an OWC Elite drive after the second Lacie tanked. I've only had the OWC two months, but so far so good (though I'd have said the same thing two months into owning the first Lacie). Compared to the Lacie, the OWC has a substantially smaller footprint, and is MUCH quieter. This drive is one of the noisiest I've come across. I really didn't realize just how loud it was until I switched out the second one for the OWC and discovered the noise that I'd been attributing to my MacPro was actually coming from the Lacie. It's also slow compared the OWC. I've always associated Lacie with high quality products, but I can't recommend this drive.

This was SO easy to hook up with my iMac, just took literally a few minutes. And it worked perfectly; the noise when it was backing up wasn't bad at all. I really liked the blue light in front because, well, just because it looks cool. :)However, I bought it only about six weeks ago, it was on sale as I recall, however it unfortunately died tonight. VERY loud clicking noises and my Mac froze up, which is beyond rare. Darn. All those backups lost since they'll have to refurbish it or replace it, which I'd of course prefer. Since they are closed the next two days, I don't know exactly how they will handle it.Added: Once I finally got hold of customer service, after being on hold for an hour, the rep was not very responsive. The capper is that I have to pay for shipping (not a light unit) back at my cost, with stipulations as to how to send (3" bubble wrap - like I just have that sitting around). No refund unless they can't fix it. If I had it to do over again, I'd give it one star. If the returned unit (no ETA on when that might be) also fails, I WILL get a refund. You know when you call tech support and your 21st in line - AND there is no toll free number - it's time to prepare for the worst.Of course, all my backups are gone either way. Please read their warranty VERY carefully before considering this unit.

I spent a lot of time looking for reviews on external hard drives before buying this drive. The reason for that is that I'm archiving precious family videos and wanted to avoid the horror stories I read again and again about external hard drive failure.Although this drive was one of the most inexpensive, it also seemed to have the largest number of positive reviews, so I purchased it.It came quickly, looks beautiful, and worked right out of the box great! It really surprised me by seeming to be faster than my other external drives which are firewire drives! (This drive being usb II I expected to be a bit slower.)Another thing I like about the drive is it's the smallest external drive I have physically, and the case is perfectly rectangular instead of some space age shape. So, you can stack them on a bookshelf or closet neatly if you wind up archiving a lot of drives.I have not owned it long enough to know long term reliability. It's about half full now with no problems. As far as cons, I have two: The usb II cable that comes with it is laughably short. Just a few inches long! So unless you buy a longer cable, it has to sit RIGHT by the USB port and not set off to the side or on top of the computer. When a company cheaps out on a small item like a cable, I always wonder if they cheaped out other places. But maybe that's just me? Also, you'll want to reformat the drive when you get it if you plan to archive files larger than a couple gig each (which my family films are). The factory format does not allow the oversized files.Otherwise, I'm DELIGHTED with the drive, it's looks, it's speed, it's price, and the mountain of positive reviews I found makes me feel a little more relaxed compared to other major brands whose reviews made me say "yikes!"
