This is the best price for size that you can get with a top-of-the-line manufacturer. But their claim that the unit will automatically turn on and off in sync with your computer is false. It only does it with older PCs - not state-of-the-art Apple Macs. And they're 'pissy' about being called on it. Bad form. Bad business.

My local hard drive is too small for my music collection so I decided to get an external drive for my music. The Lacie drive is sleek looking, solidly constructed, and quiet (fanless). It is working quite well for me, as I need the speed of FW800 for realtime DJing. The bus speed of 800Mbps allows me to load tracks as quickly as possible which is important when DJing live. While it's not quite as fast as the local drive, it is fast enough for my purposes.I bought two Lacie drives, one for playing live and the other as a backup. I really like that Lacie put 2 FW800 ports, allowing me to daisy chain both drives together for an easy backup. I use SilverKeeper 2.0 (freeware) as my backup software. V2.0 is compatible with 10.3.9-10.5.x. It is easy to use and I am quite happy with it. I did not use any of the other software that came with the Lacie drive.I am quite pleased with my purchase.

I receieved this hard drive with much anticipation. It worked well and installed easily with the first hook up. It started sputtering and making noise upon the second hook up. I called La Cie and they tried to walk me through it and told me that I had a corrupt hard drive. I am expecting a second one from Amazon in a week.Hard drives are not 100%. Very satisfied with this product. I have one at work, and bought one for my home iMac after my Western Digital "mybook" drive crapped out. Stay away from Western Digital drives, not worth the carboard they are shipped in.

About 2 months or so after purchasing this product I noticed that many files that I had been storing in it were getting zeroed out and leaving only the file icon with no data. At first I wasn't sure how this was happening or when it even occurred until I went to open the files affected, because the file appeared to still be there. I finally realized when this was happening after one time when I restarted my compute and noticed I had 12G available on the drive due to it being such a significant change. I have had several other 5-10G losses since and am weary of turning my computer off anymore.When I inquired to LaCie about this issue they told me that I would need to reformat my drive and it should fix the problem. My problem what I'm supposed to do with the 400+G of data I have remaining on this drive that I would like to keep in tact. They don't seem to have any suggestions for that that don't require spending at least another $100 or more. If I was trying to spend that much on a hard drive I would have done so in the first place. Now I'm going to take that $100+ and get a drive from a different manufacturer I guess and toss out this unreliable peice of junk.

I have absolutely no problems with this external hard drive. It's quiet and fast. They also have good online support, which I needed for one of their other products. I'm using it on a Windows XP SP3 box.

La Cie makes excellent storage products. This external hard drive is point and click and ready to go with any desktop setup.PROS-Great clean design makes it easy to fit in very compact spaces.Aluminum case wicks of the heat in an effective and quiet fashion.Performance is top notch with Firewire, but I wish my iMac had eSATA capability to REALLY test the performanceCONS-n/aOver the course of a decade, this is my sixth La Cie external hard drive, and I have not yet had a problem with any of my La Cie purchases. This is by far the most elegant, highest performance, and quietest La Cie purchase to date. The software EMC Retrospect is a great added bonus, and I would strongly recommend this product for those seeking a non intrusive, good value, high performance external hard drive.In summary, this drive is a slam dunk winner, and you can't do too badly by buying anything with a LaCie label.

I've used these drives for video production usage since 2003 and have loved every iteration of it. I like these in particular because they are one single drive instead of two drives in a RAID-0 arrangement. Yes it doesn't have as much throughput but it sure is way more reliable.On that note this space is all for large video files and work files as I'm compressing and compiling DVD's. These drives hold up under hours and hours of reads and writes for years to come. In fact some drives I bought in 2005 just died but to clarify the housing died but the drives are still usable as internal drives. That said I would NOT use these drives or any firewire drive as an archival medium. Despite these being great drives there are other ways I would store sensitive material like spreadsheets and photographs. Any firewire drive is easy to knock over or unplug correctly and each time this happens you take a chance that it won't start up again.One thing I would recommend if you use a mac is "Diskwarrior." it's a bit spendy but it has saved many a firewire drives from the clutches of re-formatting because it was having trouble mounting.

The LaCie 301826U d2 Quadra 750 GB external hard disk is a beautiful piece of machinery. The aluminum cooling case means silent operation and gives it it's attractive appearance.The installation for the hard drive is self explanatory; you plug it in, turn it on and click on the device in "My Computer" and it formats and installs itself. (for Windows users)The device has 3 power options; On, Off and Auto. The auto is beautiful, because the device goes into standby when your computer does, saving energy. When finished using the hard drive, I select "Safely Remove Device" and then just unplug the drive from the computer, the drive shuts itself off.I have not used the supplied software; auto updating and quick access button.So far, the drive operates fast and effectively, using the USB connection. (I can only imagine how much faster it would be with a firewire connection) I've just received the device and am in the initial stages of use, and all is well. I will return to update the status after some time.Enjoy!

this LaCie 500 GB external hard drive seems great. no trouble so far, was up and running in minutes. for the price this seems to be an excellent drive. very recommended.pro: it does what it is supposed to do. besides the huge 500 GB capacity it is smallish, especially if you need a low profile more than a small footprint. it is relatively quiet, having no fan, but there are the gentle little clicks and knocks you can hear from most hard drives. set up was extremely simple.con: while i must say that i don't have much recent experience with external hard drives, this little guy does seem to run pretty warm. i measured 115 degrees F on the top surface. this seems to be expected though, and the manual advises not to stack more than 2 units high. for data transfer it only uses a usb 2.0 cable - some would say a firewire might have been a nice alternative, but for 500 GB under a hundred bucks i'm not complaining about that. however, there are times when i would switch it off, as i use my internal drive for most day-to-day stuff, but this unit has no power switch. to turn off, you are supposed to do the 'safely remove hardware' thing and then pull out the power supply connection. i don't know if it is an issue with my computer or this drive, but any time i try the safely remove hardware thing it tells me the device is busy and to try again later. the only way i've 'safely' turned it off was by shutting down the computer and then unplugging the power from the drive before re-booting. lately i've just left it on. if it had a power switch it would have gotten 5 stars.

I bought a 320 gb d2 last year for myself, and when my girlfriend mentioned that she needed a hard-drive, I immediately thought of LaCie. The only problem I had was that it was cheaper to buy the 500 for her this year than the 320 for myself last year! The daisy-chaining capabilities are useful, and I love the one-touch shortcut button feature. This generation of the d2 Quadra also features an opportunity to partition the hard-drive into separate mac and pc units as soon as you initially install it (no work to set it up!) or leave it as just mac or just pc. The fan-less cooling system is perfect and quiet so long as you are using the hard-drive in an open or somewhat ventilated area (at least an inch or so in every direction). However, if you're looking for something that you can tuck somewhere out of the way, you might look for something else.

I bought my d2 quadra 500GB 11-2007. It is the model with no ridges.It looks great, feels sturdy but isn't that quiet. Sometimes it is loud & sometimes moderate. I had called LaCie & they said the noise was normal. It runs warm but not hot. It worked great with Mac Time Machine. From 11-2007 till a few days ago.It just quit. So 15-16 months of use. Light works but Mac won't recognize it. Will not appear in Disk Utility either. I tried 2 other cables; FW800, FW400 & USB & still no joy.It is still under warranty. I'm not sure I want to send all my personal backed up data into LaCie. I may want to try another brand.

I just received my product today and it works fantastic! I connected it to my Macbook Pro via Fire Wire 800 and I am getting on average of 45mb/s write speeds. I can't wait to get a eSATA PCI card so i can utilize the eSATA port on the Hard Drive.The Drive was very easy to format. I devoted half my drive to backing up my Macbook Pro's Hard Drive and the other half for Extra Storage. Also, Time Machine works Flawlessly with this Hard Drive. Easy Plug and Play. Im planning on purchasing another one so I can utilize the RAID 0 or RAID 1 feature.The Hard Drive has no built in fan so it is whisper quiet. After the disk has been spinning for hours doing the initial backup of my files on my laptop, it is running cooler than my Macbook Pro's Hard Drive that spins at the slower 5400rpm.Buy This!

While this is definitely not a portable device (it weighs a ton!), it is still relatively small. If you don't have the cash or extra hard drives on hand to go with a drobo, this is definitely an excellent second choice. The price is right, the form-factor excellent, the array of connection options amazing. What's not to like. So far so good, im using it as a backup unit for an SQL Retrospect MSSQL backup machine, the drive is heavily used, i bought a spare drive just in case.Pretty happy with the speed, its a nice looking device and mostly, so far its very reliable.Using it on Raid 5

Because of the light duty cycle I can't comment on the durability or reliability. But, most importantly, it won't keep up with video transfer through Firewire from a Sony digital camcorder. My earlier (smaller) disk from Acom does. So buy it for price or capacity or looks, but not for video transfers.
