This is my second Lacie d2 in a year. #2 just died and now I have 2 door stops.The drives just flat-out stop working and the computer cannot find it. The first one's fan started making a lot of noise then it died. The second one lasted about 6 weeks and died.These drives are 100% crap. I wouldn't have another one if they gave it to me.

Since my precious USB ports are over-utilized, it was nice to find a disk I could plug into my firewire and not worry about. Love all the space, and it comes with decent backup software (though with Time Machine it may not matter). Also like the simple, elegant look, since this is in my living room connected to my media pc (mac mini). My prior drive was a network drive, so the speed improvement is awesome!

LaCie 301826U d2 Quadra 750 GB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard DiskInstallation was easy, no problem recognizing the drive; HOWEVER, the auto on/off feature would not work - the hard drive simply stayed on at all times - and the feature for the backup button could not be loaded. After contacting customer support, I was told to switch the data cables, try it on another machine and report the findings. The feature worked with the USB cable but NOT FireWire. In order to correct the problem, they want me to send back the external hard drive because "it sounds like the setting for FireWire is working improperly. Of course, all data on the drive will be deleted".With 300 GB stored on it, I guess I'll swallow the price and keep the USB cable on.

The Lacie D2 Quadra Hard Disk (500gb) is an excellent selection. This is my third one, and the other two have been running smoothly for nearly two years. It's a safe choice for backing up all of your precious data.

Run. Do not walk. Run. I have two of these drives and both failed within 2 days of each other. Tick of death. This is after having two Lacie Porsche drives fail within days of each other. My conclusion is LaCie makes poor quality.I also have NO PROBLEM with the G-Tech 908112-01 500GB G-Drive Combo External Hard Drive - Windows / Macintosh by G-Tech that I purchased.

WOW. Once again Lacie performs to my expectations. I have the older 500gb d2 that is 1.5 esata (not the full speed esata). I use it connected to firewire 800. After I filled this drive and looking for a way to increase my home theatre options...this drive fit the bill with its 1TB capacity.Just to compare them, I daisy chained them with firewire 800 and copied over a 12GB folder. According to my mac, it would be done in 6 mins.So then i hooked them up to esata on my macbook pro. 12GB file copied in 3 mins! talk about fast.So after less than 5 mins I am copying huge folders in almost the time it takes to make a hot pocket in the microwave. I would give it 5 stars, but it seems to be loud when copying from my other drive.

Please do not buy this product you will regret it. one of the worst pieces of computer equipment i have ever seen. worked fine for the first two weeks then it failed completely for no reason at all. now i have to pay shipping fees to even get a refund back on this piece of junk. unless you want a $100 paperweight i suggest you look for another drive

I've seen that LaCie's often get harsh reviews from failures. I've never had one fail on me, and I use external drives a lot! Look, if a drive fails, it fails. I had a Maxtor just die and it hardly had any use. I suspect it was the i/o that died (firewire, usb board) and not the disk itself. So if a drive dies on you, try to use it in another chassis. OK, on to the review...I have one of these at work, and I LOVE IT!!! You never have to switch it off because it has great power management - it spins down when not in use. I use it as a Mac TimeMachine backup disk. I simply plug it in whenever I want a backup (I'm not a fan of having time machine backup something every hour unless I really need that for certain times).For me, this drive is fast and effective.My drives at home, which use generic chassis, I'm constantly reaching around the back and flipping power switches on and off. What a total pain. So I'm likely going to buy one of these Lacies for home.

This HD is worth every penny paid. The case is HEAVY, solid as a rock and really does stay very cool. This is what makes the drives last. I have a cheaper 500GB external HD in a typical cheap case, and you can fry eggs on it after an hour. The case on this LaCie feels like it's made of granite, and due to the thicker case, it's QUIET. I can't say enough about this drive. Then you add in all the different interfaces including eSata, and you've got a slightly more expensive drive that is totally versatile and will last a long time. I'm starting to realize that saving 20 bucks for the cheaper model isn't worth it at all, and this drive is a prime example.***UPDATE: One year laterStill completely satisfied. I also purchased the 1TB model, same exact Quadra D2 just with the bigger hard drive. I use them both on eSata (ExpressCard adapter on my laptop) for video editing, Photoshop work and backups, and they are FAST, like an internal hard drive. In fact, they are fast enough for me to use as SCRATCH DISKS in Photoshop CS4! I've given away my cheaper drives, you get what you pay for and I have zero regrets with the LaCie line (and no, I don't work for them!).

I purchased this product for class, post production where I use final cut pro. It saves large files quickly and I havn't lost anything as much as I have been using it. No freezing or malfunction has occured. A great product and plenty of space for video editing!

This drive is a waste of money. I have had it for almost a year and it was working fine. Then it started to have trouble spinning up and mounting. I went online to see if anyone else had problems and found others with the same complaints. It seems to be a power issue. The power adapter is not standard and not replaceable without sending back to LaCie. I'm ready to take it outside and take out my frustrations. Once I get it fixed I'll sell it on ebay.

The drive is very quite and i like the feature of auto turn off the my mac even goes to sleep. I have it connected to firewire 800 and is been use for final cut express editing and time machine backups. I can say i do not notice any difference on performance compared when I was using the internal drive on the mac for video editing

While the price is right for this size HD it does have a couple drawbacks. The first big drawback is that there is no on/off switch. So when you are done with the drive and eject it from your computer, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it, which is really annoying considering all the cords everyone has under their desks and behind their computers. The second drawback is that it really doesn't seem very fast. I have 2 other drives, one is USB 2 and the other is Firewire. The Firewire blows both of them away, but even the other USB 2 I have seems faster than this one. But I may just be imagining that. On the positive side it is a lot of storage space for a low price and Lacie has been pretty reliable for me at least. If you use your external HD a lot I would suggest going with a model that has an on/off switch, and if you use a Mac get the firewire for added speed.

I work with a lot of images, and about a two years ago purchased three laCie hard drives, 500 gb, 1 tb and 1.5 tb. All three are dead now, and they all died same way - after a long non use period of time (from a week to a couple of months) you turn them on and nothing happens, they are dead, the disk is not spinning and no means can help. If you are looking for something reliable, please find something else.

I'm used to cheap external drives that cut corners to save money, but this harddrive is sturdy, quiet, and fast. It seems to be the fastest 1 TB drive that doesn't require a fan (because of its design). I use it for my MacBook Pro OS X Time Machine, and it works great. Very fast backups through the Firewire 800 cable, which is included.

I have this hard drive for about three weeks now and it is doing very well. The auto function is excellent, it backsup all files automatically everytime you trun on your PC. I will have to wait and see if this is going to continue one year from now.

I have had this LaCie for about a month now and it is working very well as a storage and backup device for my Mac. I am an average user. I have about 80-90 GB to back up and it does this quickly and efficiently. I got it because it has a fire wire 800 connection. I had another USB 2.0 Drive an it kept hanging up and would not back up that much very quickly. So far so good.

I have two of the LaCie 6TB external drives and they appear to be working fine. I am impressed with the fact that they run so cool. I also like the ease of creating various RAID formats for the drives.My testing has indicated 1442 MB/min for simple file transfer using the USB2 interface and 4903 MB/min using the Lacie eSata adapter. For comparison, the SATA to SATA transfer rate in the same 2 x quad core computer was 4834 MB/min.

So far I've been very happy with this drive. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that the auto power off feature doesn't work when you put the computer to sleep. Granted, that may be a problem with the computer and not the drive.
