Based on the other reviews, I feel really unlucky. I am sending in my 2nd drive tomorrow. The 1st replacement was worse than the original drive. Both made loud clicking sounds when going into sleep mode, but the 2nd one also made a strange buzzing sound just before the click. LaCie said it could be a sign of imminent drive failure. I have to send it into LaCie because Amazon won't do a replacement twice. I hope the 3rd time's the charm...

It lacks a power switch, but it does have a power-save feature. It is activated after the drive is disconnected from a host computer. But if you power it on without connecting it to anything, it will spin forever. The drive must be connected to a computer and then disconnected from it before the power-save feature activates. This may be inconvenient for those connecting the hard drive to the rear of a desktop computer.The metal shell of the enclosure is sturdy and attractive; it also dissipates heat very quickly. After most nights when it's not active, it feels like ice in the morning (I like to keep my home generally cold), which is a good thing.The drive is speedy; its burst transfers save time. I've always appreciated LaCie's reliability and simplicity in its products.But I'll complain with everybody else that the A-to-B USB cable that comes with it is far too short. The power supply also is a wall transformer, which may block other outlets when plugged in.

Easy to set up (at least on a Mac). Quiet operation. Still working after one month. If it's still working after two years, I'd give it five stars.

This is my fourth LaCie drive, over a period of about ten years. None of them failed on me--I've just upgraded because I needed more space, and since I've had such good luck with LaCie, I stuck with them. This one was bought specifically to replace a Fantom drive that I made the mistake of buying because it was so cheap. That one crapped out after only about 3 years of only occasional use, and it will certainly be my last Fantom drive.This is a very quiet unit, and does what you want from storage--it stores lots of stuff! LaCie rocks!

Great drive. Plug it in and run the quick setup and you are off and running. As simple as that. I use it with my iMac, running backups using TimeMachine. I also configured it to have an Exchange partition and use that to swap files with Windows PCs.

This LaCie drive is fantastic. It's my 2nd LaCie external hard disk (the other is full with home video). I've had the first one for 4 years and could not be more satisfied. A very stable product with no problems and very easy to use. I use them both for Mac and PC and the variety of connectivity is perfect. I've also just purchased a rack to mount both of them in. In all, a great looking and functioning product that is well worth the slightly higher price.

Fast access to your data on FireWire 800. I wish you could connect two computer to one hard drive. I would recommend this product.

LaCie's 1 TB external hard disk is plugin-and-play with my Mac network. With multiple connection cables, it is easy to daisychain it to my usual Time Machine external hard disk. And it is easily transportable from location to location. What a relief to finally have all my videos safely stored in one place!Fran, producer of Future Choices

I'm very satisfied with this drive, but the first thing you need to do is get rid of their setup software and just do a quick format. The software that came with it wouldn't run on my Vista machine and hung up. I inadvertently erased the setup software so I ran the quick format and walla! everything ran fine. Next I connected it to my XP machine and it immediately saw the drive without doing a thing. It runs quiet and cool, better than my Maxtor One Touch. I can't tell if it's any faster or slower than my Maxtor because I only have 100gb used of the 700gb available. As others have reported, this is not a 750gb drive, only 700.

The product was defective. I followed the setup proedure par instruction. It worked OK for an hour or so, then it started giving me continuously disk-write error for some time and hung my PC (Vista). Then it completely stopped working. PC would not even recognize the USB or Firewire connected product. I tried to call manufacturer's tech support(not a 800 number). After waiting on the line for about 15 minutes gave up. Then I had to register the product first to try to get email support. I got email reply after 2 days with some suggestions. Those did not work.Finally, I returned the product to Amazon and Amazon, upon receipt of the returned product, promptly credited my credit card with the full amount.

This was a life saver for me. I edit digital video & used all of my memory on my Macbook Pro in a matter of 3 months. I am sure I will need more then the TB that I got. I will defiantly buy another Lacie product.

Hooked it up to my iMac and it went to work right away -- effortlessly, noiselessly syncing with Mac Time Machine. It sits there doing its backup work while its bright blue "eye" on the front reassures me it's on the job. It replaced a large Seagate hd whose performance was getting balky. Modest price, too, for a 500gb drive.

I recently upgraded my Lacie ext. Porsche design 160GB HD to the d2 Quad 500GB HD. And I am not disappointed. I have connected the same with firewire to my computer. The setup is straight forward and easy. The backup software found with the HD is basic but functional. You may wish to upgrade this. Otherwise, the disk runs very quietly and efficiently, hardly noticed that it was there. It does warm-up, which is to be expected but does not heat up. All in all I would recommend this product.

I used LACIE since it was a trusted brand for editing. It's holding up well and I have all my music and video files on it. I don't use it that often so maybe that's why it hasn't fail on me yet.

I owned a 250GB LaCie Triple Interface drive for 3 years and I was very happy with it. When the time came to buy a 1TB disk, I originally chose the LaCie Big Extreme+ (301199U) because it was substantially cheaper. I returned it after 1 week because: a) the drive was much bigger than it looked in the pictures; and b) the fan was always active, even in standby mode.I bought this drive in its place, and I couldn't be happier. It is much more compact and fanless, thus extremely quiet.Definitely recommended unless the higher price is an issue.

from our IT guy:So far I'm happy with it. It is running a lot cooler than previous Lacie drives (I've purchased about 30 of them in the past- I edit video). Hopefully it will do better than the older Lacie drives I own, which seem to "give up the ghost" after a couple years.

The Hard Disk arrived when promised. Easy to install. This is my fourth LaCie HD purchased over several years. All are performing satisfactorily which is more than I can say for another well known heavily advertised brand which died after a year in service.

I bought this item for family's personal use based on a recommendation from an IT person on our school staff. When it comes to computers, we are all beginners and not too familiar on how and why things work on a computer. He was so right with this product. The only thing we had to do was to open the packaging and read the very simple and brief instructions. Basically connect it into an outlet on one end and connect the other plug to our laptop computers. Then the simple instructions came onto the screen guiding us on how to back up our files from the laptops onto this external hard disk. Very user friendly for someone who is not too tech-savy!

I purchased this hard drive for use with my MBP about a month or so back after reading a great review in Macworld,After a month it started making strange noises, I had to unmount it and unplug it. When I tried to use it again it was dead, it did not spin at all. The light went on, but that was it. I called tech support and they had me return it. It cost $25 for me to send it back, they insist that you insure it. I won't be using LaCie Hard drives anytime soon

So far so good. It works and the software included handles PC and Mac. Only concern is how warm the unit gets. Venting is beneath but it sits on short legs so for peace of mind I will raise it higher with bumpers or something and maybe keep a fan on it. I hope La Cie reads this and takes note of user concern. Even better: if they sent out taller legs (a stand off, to promote a better airflow).Best purchase: an energy saver surge protector that turns everything off when my PC shuts down.

I bought a LaCie 250 GB USB 2.0 red brick drive in November 2006 to back up a large amount of digital photo work, and as a general backup disk. So far, the drive has worked flawlessly, though it's worth noting I don't run it constantly. I only power on the drive and connect it to a system when I need to back up or retrieve data.Pro:- The drive is quiet when idling -- much quieter than my T43 laptop's fan.- It's worked flawlessly: no data loss, and shows up as a plug-and-play device with no problems.- USB 2.0 is reasonably fast and flexible for moving between various PCs.- The case design is unique, fun and eye-catching.- It's a reasonably-priced drive, even though there are less expensive drives out there.Con:- As other reviewers have noted, the power switch is a bit difficult to find by feel alone and is cumbersome to depress if you have larger fingers.- The female-DIN power-supply connector on the back of the drive also seems fragile, so I've always been extremely careful when attaching the power supply to the drive.- The included USB cable is pretty short.- The included backup software did not install on Windows XP Pro/SP1 (and I haven't bothered with it since.)Even with so many items in my "Con" list, I still give this drive four stars, mostly because of price/performance/reliability, and because none of the negatives listed above affect my work.

I had been using this drive for over a month now as a backup drive on my iMac (using Time machine). It is an excellent drive with no noise and fast speed through Firewire 800 port. This drive is compatible with both mac and PC.

I've used LaCie drives since the beginning of time. I've had few problems, other than the darn things keep filling up and I have to keep buying more.1TB is enough for backups of video files and other project files.This drive seems to run cooler than the previous D2's. And it's cooler looking than anything Maxtor or WD have.
