Bought this for its reputation and good price. Didn't realize the only immediate tech support is a TOLL-number, where you wait in a phone queue. If you choose to log-on a ticket, it takes a day for them to get back to you, and they may or may not address all your issues. If they don't, your request goes back to the end of the line so you wait another whole day. No live chat. No easy access. So it takes days and days and days to resolve a problem, because they won't call you.I found the documentation very uneven. Either way too basic (this is a plug, stick it in) or having huge gaps. I ran into problems when trying to reformat and partition because available documentation wasn't consistent with my XP dialogue boxes.The main problem, however, is that when the drive is connected, I cannot shut off my desktop -- it automatically reboots. I'm going in circles with LaCie tech "support" in trying to get an answer. They want me to try different specialized cords and computers (which I don't have) . . . .Reading the rest of these reviews, and the failure rate, I still have two weeks to return this so am rethinking this investment. Yes, the USB cord is barely long enough to reach the USB port when the unit is on top of the computer. And the shut off switch, or lack thereof, was a stupid oversight in this day of energy consciousness.More and more, I'm thinking that price should not be the only determinant.

This hard drive is awesome! The previous comment states that the fan is loud and stays on even when idle, but for me that is not the case. Of course it's not exactly super quite, but for having 2 hard drives in one enclosure it is exactly what I would expect. Switching RAID modes is easy! The LaCie shortcut button app also works flawless. Thinking about buying another one.

LaCie 301440U d2 Quadra Hard Disk 500GB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (Aluminum)this looked like a great product. I purchased 2 of them, one for my medical practice, and one for my home. When a patient in the graphics design industry told me this brand of backup hard drives always failed, I didn't pay attention. However, first the unit in my home failed, and then the office unit failed a few weeks after. Both drives are dead within at one year of use. I have purchased many different hard drives, and these have been my greatest disappointment.

Have had this for a month now and originally purchased to replace a 500GB LaCie drive (which works great but needed more capacity). The drive is VERY quiet, fast and to date reliable. This is my 3rd LaCie drive in 5 years and (knock on wood) I have not had any issues with the drives to date.I use these primarily for my Macs.

After loosing a complete database with years of info as well as lots of pictures following another non-recoverable PC error I turned to my old backup. Didn't help. Nothing but programs without files.Now, after using a MAC for over a year, I've added a LaCie 500GB hard drive and I can actually find any backup file on it at any time. If you want simple and easy to use and you're also not a computer geek, it's the one to try. It' makes very little noise sitting on my desktop, it's fast and I have had no problems after 3 months.

the drive works. The manual and the website are the most useless i have ever encountered and i am an old man. If you know a bit about hard drives and raid set up then it is a good product but if you are new at this type of thing it can be less fun than a sharp stick in the eye.

I promised I would review the La Cie after 5 months because long-term is the true test. As a graphic design student at CalArts, I work my external pretty hard. It's held up through and through! A few times, with the multi-gig file transfers, it stalls. I have to restart it but it has never stalled after the second try. I have to say I'm very happy with this external.

This is my second Lacie Hard Drive, never had a problem with the first but needed a bigger one after a couple years of use thus the need of a new and bigger one. Thanks.

There's really not much else to say. I've purchased several LaCie drives in the past and have had good luck with them, so I have no idea what's up with this model. It simply stopped working after about two months (luckily I had everything on it backed up). Symptoms were a loud clicking noise and my Macintosh OS refusing to recognize or mount the drive.Be sure to fill out your warranty card if you purchase this hard drive, is my advice. And be sure you back up whatever is on it. I currently have a support ticket in to LaCie, no telling what's going to happen, but if I can't get joy I'll contest the purchase with my credit card company.Oh, also: It's loud. The ads say it has fan-free operation, but the actual hard drive sound is pretty noisy. Of course, I may have gotten a bad one, which would explain the racket......(If I'm treated well by LaCie and I get another drive that doesn't die on me, I'll revise my review...it did pretty well until it abruptly quit...)Update: LaCie gave me something of a run-around in that it insisted the power supply was likely to blame. My husband later opened up the drive and found that it was nonoperational - as in, a problem with the drive, NOT the power supply. (He opened the case without my knowledge and voided the warranty, so I'm not able to provide any further details about LaCie's service options.) I will say this, though: Personally? I've switched to Other World Computing's Mercury removable external drives. They're sturdy, dependable, cheap, and USB/Firewire powered, so you're not having to plug and unplug a backup you want to use for your laptop. Also you can still buy them in the Firewire 800 flavor, so your data backs up soooo much faster.)

I've owned different brands over the years and recently had my third Maxtor/Seagate fail beyond recovery. My choices narrowed down to Western Digital, LaCie and G-Tech. WD are great units but the My Book Studio edition has fewer connection ports and no power switch. G-Tech also makes great devices but cost more which made the LaCie an easy choice.LaCie has a decent reputation among the creative community. The d2 is a great external HDD with 4 connectivity options, an all Aluminum enclosure (which is almost entirely a heat sink) and a three position power switch (on, off and auto). I use it with a couple of Macs and a neat feature of this device, which pops-up on the first mount, is an option to create a "swap partition" to allow Windows connectivity.Connection speed is as expected. I use Firewire 800 and sSATA with excellent results. You can also daisy-chain multiple devices via dual Firewire 800 ports. The d2 is a very nice piece of industrial design and looks great on it's side or stacked with other d2 units.I gave it 4 out of 5 stars since I haven't had it long enough to judge its long term reliability.

Excellent external hard drive. I haven't got the one touch button to work yet, but it's probably something easy to fix. The backup software is easy to use and the power saving function is a good idea (though it doesn't kick in if you put th system on standby).

LaCie 301825U d2 Quadra 500 GB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard DiskI do not recommend these Lacie Drives. I have 2 of them, both are bad. Their casings are nice, elegant and the device feels rugged, but they burn out quick. I have a seagate that I have been using for several years now. The Lacie drives are junk. They look beautiful, but will let you down when you need to restore from that backup you needed. Mine are door stops now.

I bought this drive after reading reviews of the Drobo product and all of it's issues. It has been installed for about two weeks and has been making automated backups of my two installed drives daily since then. I did notice (after clicking on the "restore" option) that the backup of my c:\ drive had a yellow light indicator, not the perfect green. I initiated a separate backup of the c:\ at that moment, got a green light and have had green lights on it ever since.The manual is installed on the drive and downloads as a pdf... not idea but saves paper. The installation was not as idiot proof like I had hoped, but not terribly challenging.The build is exceptional, the physical design stunning. I wish I had discovered LaCie earlier and used this model and it's rack configuration for all of my external drives.I'm now sleeping like a baby knowing that my c:\ drive and my work in process drive are both backed up regularly.

I'm using this hard drive with Time Machine on my iMac and it works beautifully. It has every connection you could ever use, but I am using 800 Firewire and I just forget it's there.

This was the first time I went for a LACIE product. I wanted a really good external HD for TIME MACHINE in my Imac. Just out of the box, we started with the wrong foot. I'm getting a blinking blue light with no response at all. Never appeared on Finder. Called Customer Service and spent hours on the phone with no answer. Googled "lacie blinking blue light" and realized it was the power adapter that came faulty. If the drive works, I really don't know! But one thing is certain, I won 't purchase any LACIE product ever again.

Have had for a month, so far so good. It is used as a backup for a 1.6 TB server. One day we noticed a red light flashing and found out that was a heat warning. We repositioned the unit in a better path of air and no problems.

I ordered the LaCie 750 GB hard drive from Amazon last month and it arrived in excellent condition and within a very short period of time. I was somewhat concerned about hooking it up to my fairly new iMac and getting it to work with Time Machine. From someone who doesn't know one firewire from another, I found the directions very straight forward, and within about 25 minutes, everything was working perfectly. I am so pleased to have this back-up system. No more worrying about loosing my valued photos and digital scrapbook supplies.

LaCie was recommended by a college professor of mine. I am a Recording Industry major, and required a large external HD to transfer my recorded music from home to studio. I can record directly to this drive without any hitches, and the 800 speed firewire is wonderful. Great product, and fast delivery.

I use this drive using the external estata interface on my directtv HR-21 receiver and it works GREAT. I now have 1 TB to store HD TV. It has been working for months with my directTV receiver with no problem. All I did was unplug the receiver, plug the drive into the estata port, switch the drive to always on and power up the directtv receiver and the receiver now sees this drive INSTEAD of the internal dirve (you don't get both).
