I bought this drive in July 2008 and it worked flawlessly for 8 months until I confused my wife's laptop power supply with the drive's power supply, thereby showing the drive 19V instead of the correct 12V. Not good. The big blue light forever after slowly blinked on/off repeatedly and the drive wouldn't spin up. It was dead.The bright side to this is that when I e-mailed Lacie Tech Support - being very upfront about my boneheaded mistake and just wondering if the drive might be fixable - they still covered the unit under it's 3-year warranty! WOW!They initially sent me a new power supply free of charge, thinking it might possibly be that (I was sure it wasn't), then after that didn't do it, they gave me authorization to return it to be repaired free of charge. I paid to ship it to them, they replaced the internal drive (a 500GB Seagate Barracuda, I might add) and shipped it back to me within a couple days. So, for only the $12 I paid for shipping, I got a virtually new drive in under a week...which they didn't have to do, since it was obviously negligence on my part that fried the drive.So, I have to strongly recommend this Lacie drive both because it's a reliable and well-made product and it's backed up by above-and-beyond customer service!

Great price. Using with Time Machine and all is going well (OS 10.6.2). Instant set-up and I like the fact that it has USB and Firewire.

I used this hard drive successfully to back-up two laptops. I plugged it in to my desktop to back the data on that computer up and I kept getting error messages when I tried to transfer data. I then unplugged it and plugged it into my laptop with which it had worked fine and the laptop wouldn't recognize it. It also then began making beeping noises which my research indicates means the hard drive has probably failed. The only explanation I can come up with is that it was a failure waiting to happen or it broke when I barely bumped it with my elbow on the desk. If the latter was the cause, then it is very fragile and not worth the investment even though it is a great price for 500GB of storage. A few other notes: there is a warning in the manual to keep the drive away from magnetic sources such as computer screens and the USB cord provided is about 18 inches long. Also, the manual instructions, which I read dutifully, weren't consistent with my XP dialogue boxes, though I was able to get around that by making intuitive decisions. Also, you should know that there is no on-off switch.I was very happy about this purchase and was willing to look past some things for the price, but it was out of the box for less than a day and it failed. I can even get past that--not all products are perfect. But I can't get past bad/no product support. The only way to reach tech support is via email and they have not replied for 48 hours. (I couldn't find the toll number mentioned by another reviewer.) The tech support appears to be unsatisfactory.The worst thing is that now I have sensitive data on this which I have no idea how to remove, so it seems I can't return/exchange it. I don't feel comfortable returning it knowing that someone could extract the data somehow.I recommend you research other drives that are more sturdy, have a longer USB cable, have an on/off switch, have accurate instructions, and which are built by companies which have great tech support reviews. I am just now starting that search with 100 fewer dollars in my pocket. Good luck!

The LaCie products are great. I've used LaCie since the inception of the company back in the 80's and have only had one badly designed product (LaCie Etherdisks). The d2 Quadra drives use the Oxford chipset and they are always just plug and play!. The d2 Quadra offers 4 interfaces and will work with PC or Mac. Highly recommended.

This is my second LaCie 1 TB external drive. I store large video files on them. I've had one for about a year, the second one for several months. I've never had a single problem with either drive. I also move the drives between three different home computers, without any problems. An excellent investment for about $150. You can get cheaper external drives, but this one is built to last. It has an extra large 32 mb cache, which speeds up writing. No negatives from my perspective.

Bought this for my wife who is an Apple junkie. She wanted a time capsule compatible hard drive for her iMac and Macbook. This is a great solution, much cheaper than the wireless Apple backup solutions and works just as well.

This system sure beats my setup on other drives (for those, I use SuperDuper to mirror two sets of two external drives each night). This makes it much more convenient to do it right out of the box, especially with the hot-swappable drives in case one fails.Unlike other reviewers, I haven't noticed it to be very loud at all. Perhaps they have a defective drive. If so, it should be easy to replace it from the retailer you bought it from.Also, I have this drive installed on the LaCie Desk Rack for d2 Hard Drives along with two other drives. This helps to save a lot of desk space.If a drive fails in the future and I need to replace it/have it rebuild it, I will update my review to let you know how well (or poor) it worked, but I have high hopes!

I can clearly hear the drive running from several feet away but it's not disturbing. The fellow who said that he can't hear it with his ear right next to it, well the drive must not have been running at that moment.I'm using this as a Time Machine backup drive. With a Firewire 400 connection to my old G5 iMac, it backed up 270 GBs in under 5 hours. At first the Time Machine backup was dog slow. Then I remembered to turn off my virus software, AND most important, I changed the Spotlight preferences by selecting the Privacy tab and adding my backup drive to prevent Spotlight from indexing/searching it. After that the backup process just flew!After writing data for 5 hours the drive was warm, but not hot. The aluminum heat-sink case seems to cool the drive very well.Eventually I will attach it to an Apple Airport Extreme via USB to use it as a network drive for wireless use by my laptop as well. Unfortunately the Airport Extreme wireless router does not provide a Firewire 400/800 connection - just ethernet or the much slower USB 2.0. I'll provide an update on the performance at that time.All in all, I am quite happy with this purchase.

has worked without any flaws for a few years now. i have used it as both a backup for three different desktops and laptops and to transfer data between these computers. it's been fine for both apple and PC at the same time.

Noisy. Clacks repeatedly (8 or so sets of clack-clack) each time it starts up. Disturbing sounds, but it's been working for a couple months now. The 500 GB version sitting next to it is whisper quiet. Easy to set up. Nice design. Sturdy feel.

I purchased the unit 4 months ago, running RAID 1.Pros:- Looks great, built like a tank, great connection choices including fast eSATACons:- Unit runs hot, and the fan is really noisy (unit warms my room when in use, which is great in winter, not so great in summer)- Unit died after 4 months. Just completely unresponsive. LaCie does not offer toll-free tech support, and their website support is buggy. Expected better reliability and customer support from Lacie...

I have owned 6 La Cie drives. Three of them have had power supply failures. Recently one of them started smoking! I reported the failure to La Cie and they told me that it was out of warranty so hard luck. They advertise a 3 year warranty and this drive is less than 3 years old but evidently it had been on the retailers shelf for some time and incredibly La Cie is evidently counting that time. They said that when they sold it to the retailer it only had a 2 year warranty. I'm done with them! Caveat emptor - buyer beware.

I own 2 LaCie Quadra drives, a 1 TB and a 2TB. I bought both to interface to my iMac via a firewire 800 connection (they're daisy chained). On an iMac this allows the external drive to be the bootable backup drive if a problem develops. I needed the rather large amount of storage to store HD videos, photos, and backups...particularly HD video. The Quadra drives have met all my needs as anticipated. They have worked flawlessly with my iMac and, as a bonus, they don't look bad on your desktop. All things considered I'm happy with the drive and will probably add more when needed to boost HD video storage archives.

Great external hard disk but it unfortunately crashed after two years (power supply problem). It was under warranty but the French support is rather horrid (ironic since the company is French!). I finally had to contact the US support team and from there on everything was very professional, although I had to ship at my cost (currently living in France) and I'm still trying to figure out a way to get it shipped back to Europe. I have three LaCie disks and all have performed well but I think it is time to switch to G-tech or another competitor. Most surprising for me, other than the French customer service, was when I opened up the drive to inspect it (and try in vain to save my data) and discovered how poorly it appears designed... I'm not an expert but I've taken apart my mac and am still awed at how well-thought out the interior is.

I have been buying LaCie external hard drives for more than a decade and they are reliable and offer good performance.I needed a larger external so that I could back up my hard drive and my very large music collection on one machine with the MAC Time Machine. I wanted a Firewire 800 Drive but also liked that this one also had capability with USB 2.0 and eSATA in the event Firewire 800 is not supported on my next Apple computer. I have 3 of the Porsche design hard drives which are about 3 years old and still running well.The design isn't as sleek as the LaCie Porsche drives as it's more "industrial" but since all my peripherals are on a shelf behind my 24" monitor, it's not much of an issue -- and form follows function.It was very easy to format and set up -- the only "difficulty" was determining which of the four cables provided was for the Firewire 800 port -- but it's pretty obvious in terms of plugging it in.I have been running it for about a month and it operates flawlessly with Time Machine.

I had this LaCie drive for just over a year and the drive stopped working. First, you hear a chirping sound and the blue light on the drive blinks. This is the first indication that the drive is failing. After a week, the drive no longer turned on at all. Fortunately, this was my backup drive so I didn't lose any of my data. But, it's still not comforting knowing that your backup drive is failing you! In my office, two other people have had the same LaCie drive fail, so do not buy it!

This is a versatile, well-built hard drive. Very quite. I have it connected to an airport extreme base station for Time Machine backups of three macs.
