I have bought smaller (250gb) LaCie drives for years..., used another 10 120GB for use in a lab at work, and used the 2.5" portable for archiving photos and docs to take to and from work. I've always been a fan of the LaCie drives, until now...I bought a 1TB drive about 6 months ago, and it died over the weekend. What will the cost be to have a reliable data recovery company take a crack at retrieving the data? $800-$4400!! More if they get a full recovery, less if they only recover some files.I think the biggest problem with the drive is the RAID 0 design, which means if one drive dies, you lose all. Maybe this should have been obvious to me as a weak point in the system, however the marketing materials don't explain these details... it's a black box system that doesn't reveal the internal config.I am still dealing with support now, so I don't have the resolution to report yet, but I haven't been impressed so far with my 45 minute wait time to speak to tech support, or a guy who continually yawned at me like I was boring him to death with my sad story of losing about 2 months of work that I'm in a panic about. This guy must have yawned 6-7 times in the 10 minutes we spoke. Comon dude... drink some coffee, or stop pulling all nighters with your LAN party buddies.If it turns out the power supply is the culprit, which is one thing he said COULD be the problem, I'll be much happier, having had some annoyances for a few days, but recovering the thousands of $$ of time of work on the drive.Would I recommend this drive? Not any more... Not at the price and reviews I'm seeing from others... I'd go with 2 1TB drives now, striped RAID 1. It's a little more of an investment, but safer, and also time is valuable!Another product I'm really interested in looking at is the new DROBO product. It's $500 for the device alone, and add 4 1TB dives, and it would cost about $1600 total, but it would give you 1.5TB of redundant and fast storage. The Drobo system allows you to scale the drives up as drives get larger and cheaper, so you don't have to start with the top end drives if you don't like... I have 2 320GB drives I can throw in to start, and then add more drives as the need grows.Sorry for the ramble... just killing time while I try to figure out what I'm going to do to recover that lost data.

I've owned two of these now, and both have failed in less than a year of use. I switched to an OWC Elite drive after the second Lacie tanked. I've only had the OWC two months, but so far so good (though I'd have said the same thing two months into owning the first Lacie). Compared to the Lacie, the OWC has a substantially smaller footprint, and is MUCH quieter. This drive is one of the noisiest I've come across. I really didn't realize just how loud it was until I switched out the second one for the OWC and discovered the noise that I'd been attributing to my MacPro was actually coming from the Lacie. It's also slow compared the OWC. I've always associated Lacie with high quality products, but I can't recommend this drive.

This was SO easy to hook up with my iMac, just took literally a few minutes. And it worked perfectly; the noise when it was backing up wasn't bad at all. I really liked the blue light in front because, well, just because it looks cool. :)However, I bought it only about six weeks ago, it was on sale as I recall, however it unfortunately died tonight. VERY loud clicking noises and my Mac froze up, which is beyond rare. Darn. All those backups lost since they'll have to refurbish it or replace it, which I'd of course prefer. Since they are closed the next two days, I don't know exactly how they will handle it.Added: Once I finally got hold of customer service, after being on hold for an hour, the rep was not very responsive. The capper is that I have to pay for shipping (not a light unit) back at my cost, with stipulations as to how to send (3" bubble wrap - like I just have that sitting around). No refund unless they can't fix it. If I had it to do over again, I'd give it one star. If the returned unit (no ETA on when that might be) also fails, I WILL get a refund. You know when you call tech support and your 21st in line - AND there is no toll free number - it's time to prepare for the worst.Of course, all my backups are gone either way. Please read their warranty VERY carefully before considering this unit.

I spent a lot of time looking for reviews on external hard drives before buying this drive. The reason for that is that I'm archiving precious family videos and wanted to avoid the horror stories I read again and again about external hard drive failure.Although this drive was one of the most inexpensive, it also seemed to have the largest number of positive reviews, so I purchased it.It came quickly, looks beautiful, and worked right out of the box great!It really surprised me by seeming to be faster than my other external drives which are firewire drives! (This drive being usb II I expected to be a bit slower.)Another thing I like about the drive is it's the smallest external drive I have physically, and the case is perfectly rectangular instead of some space age shape. So, you can stack them on a bookshelf or closet neatly if you wind up archiving a lot of drives.I have not owned it long enough to know long term reliability. It's about half full now with no problems.As far as cons, I have two: The usb II cable that comes with it is laughably short. Just a few inches long! So unless you buy a longer cable, it has to sit RIGHT by the USB port and not set off to the side or on top of the computer. When a company cheaps out on a small item like a cable, I always wonder if they cheaped out other places. But maybe that's just me? Also, you'll want to reformat the drive when you get it if you plan to archive files larger than a couple gig each (which my family films are). The factory format does not allow the oversized files.Otherwise, I'm DELIGHTED with the drive, it's looks, it's speed, it's price, and the mountain of positive reviews I found makes me feel a little more relaxed compared to other major brands whose reviews made me say "yikes!"

My 1 year warranty was up in April. It's August 1st, and the drive is giving me cyclic redundancy check errors which I've read everywhere online to mean the drive is dead. This is the 2nd Lacie drive to do this (unfortunately I bought the 2nd drive before the 1st one broke), I won't be buying this brand again. They should spend less money on stupid "designed by" nonsense and more money on reliability, or at very least a more generous warranty.

i've purchased a 1TB and 2 500GB Lacie drives and all are working great. i haven't had these long enough to rate the reliability but so far i've ripped about 150 cd's to one of these and have used the others for backup activities which didn't take more than a few hours. i wasn't going to purchase anything that didn't have all three communication buses (USB, Firewire, and eSATA) as I will be using these with different systems with varying capability. I've used only the USB and FW buses so far including linking two drives via the FW800 bus.the price was reasonable considering the quality of the case, the flexibility of the interface bus, and the inclusion of cables. the drives were up and running after an initial formatting task. i've also used the backup software and found it to be easy to use.

I own 3 of these things. They are super reliable, and I've been through plenty others. It's really nice to have the four different kinds of connections, and LaCie is great about providing you with the cables you will need. If you are on the fence, please fall towards the side of buying it...you won't be disappointed.

I've had four lacie drives, and every single one has given me problems. My fist was 1T, and it crashed from slightly getting bumped within the first two days. I have two 500g that just got corrupted and now need to be reformatted. My other 500 is working alright now, but it's acted weird in the past. I don't know why they're such a headache. I've never had any issue with the drive inside my macbookpro, so why can't they build them like that? I've also never owned a different kind of drive, so i have nothing to compare to. But my drives are all really well taken care of and don't really move much from my desk, so it's not like I treat them badly....who knows???

I normally keep this unplugged so that it hopefully lasts longer (for those who don't know, external HD's have the nortorious reputation of breaking frequently). The side design definitely helps keep the unit cool. The entire unit, other than the blue light up button is metal, so heat has a lot of surface area to disperse. I have only downloaded stuff to the HD using a USB cable, and am able to download 75+ GB(mostly hi-def pics, videos, and music) in about 20-30 min.I have found the software that came with the HD useless, but that is probably because I don't use the HD/have it connected to my computer all of the time. To put stuff on the HD, all you need to do is follow the instructions to install the driver for the HD, and then you can use windows explorer to put files on the HD.

i always swear by LACIES hard cased drive. i've never once had i problem. i've only had this one for about a month or so. when i backed up my mac it worked like a charm. everything is as it should be....at least for now. the people who complain about their drives should maybe turn them off every once and a while, keep them in a climate controlled room or generally take care of the products they buy.

Bought this drive with its rack, and wired up (FW400) to a mac mini (the mini fits perfectly under the rack, btw); The drive has really been getting a workout, but handles heat well. The ribbed aluminum casing is slightly warm to the touch when idle, and very warm (not really hot; it can comfortably be held) after several hours of writing data (rsync'ing about 120GB two times, plus some additional content);Also, I would say this is not very noisy; when in sleep, barely audible; when waking or parking for sleep, a quick click noise; when in full operation, an audible whirring with expected write noise of drive heads.Probably too loud for a bedroom (when in operation), but fine for an entertainment console, especially if it is enclosed. I keep this setup running 24/7 with intermittent access (mainly reading at this point) and have no probs; waiting for price to dip and will get a second to "mirror" this one with a nightly rsync;

Drive is very quiet and seems to work beautifully and fast. However, there was a problem after 4 months of purchase that one of the drives went bad, fortunately I had a back-up using time machine.After this incident I cannot recommend this drive at all because all the trust I had in LaCi? just went down the drain.... Just imagine failing completely after a few months of usage? Not good!I have 2 of these drives and now I am afraid when they will fail again. (I have another cheaper non-branded drive for 2 years without failing... unbelievable).

My LaCie hard drive just quit working for no reason. Clicks and clicks and no recognition any longer from my Mac. All my music is on there. Luckily, I can capture off my IPOD but I am disappointed. I read other reviews that say they have a product with a high percentage of failure. I wish I would've known that before I bought one. One should be able to expect more from a back up hard drive. It is your back up.

The things I like about it are: industrial design, heavy (= sturdy to me), versatile - it can lie down or stand upright, depending on the space you have to give it. It is mostly quiet, although does ramp up at times. It stays cool. It only cost me $10 more than my Seagate, it was well worth the upgrade.The Story:I don't have a ton of experience with external hard drives or computers for that matter, but here is my review based on my limited experience:I purchased a Seagate HD and had lots of files important to me stored on it. In a freak accident it fell over (not hard, not far) and stopped working. I called Seagate and they said the clicking noise I was hearing was erasing my info and that I could have them try to restore the info for a cost minimum of $300.Luckily, the files were replaceable, so when needing a new hard drive I looked and searched and read and chose the LaCie because it can either lie flat or it can stand up. It's heavy and industrial feeling. I feel much more secure with this HD.Overall, I am 100% satisfied with this hard drive. It also automatically configured to my mac. I probably won't even consider a Seagate again.
