I use this drive using the external estata interface on my directtv HR-21 receiver and it works GREAT. I now have 1 TB to store HD TV. It has been working for months with my directTV receiver with no problem. All I did was unplug the receiver, plug the drive into the estata port, switch the drive to always on and power up the directtv receiver and the receiver now sees this drive INSTEAD of the internal dirve (you don't get both).

I use this product on an iMac running Leopard, using Time Machine to back up all of our family photos, documents, videos and music. It is incredibly easy to set up and runs without any difficulty. My best compliment is that you don't notice it until you need to restore something, then you're glad it's there. It's extremely quiet and survives black-outs and young children.In February 2009, I purchased another LaCie drive to add to my storage capacity. With a young family, we generate lots of pictures, movies, e-mails, etc. We use one LaCie as our Time Machine drive and the other as the primary drive for pictures, movies and iTunes content. No issues with the original drive. No issues connecting the new drive to the original, or integrating the new drive into our system (wireless network with two Airport base stations). I remain very satisfied with all aspects of this drive and plan to purchase another LaCie product when our storage requirements increase.

I've had this LaCie Quadra for about two months now, and so far, so good.The pros:1. Easy setup (after all, it's just an external HD)2. Ability to use Firewire 800. I have this external HD hooked up to my Mac laptop running Mac OS X 10.5. The Time Machine feature, although unobtrusive, does take some time for its backups, so the ability to use FW800 instead of FW400 or USB2.0 probably saves some time (although this is only a guess, as I haven't tested those other two connections). The other secondary benefit of using FW800 is that it keeps a spare FW400 port open on my computer (not a big deal from a functional standpoint, since you can daisy-chain firewire devices, but it helps from a convenience standpoint).3. Nice aesthetics. Small upright footprint. The silver metal wire mesh case matches perfectly with my MacBookPro and extermal Apple monitor. It also has a cool blue light.Cons:None so far.In summary, basically an easy and attractive way to add 1TB of storage. Recommended.

I needed to find a higher speed drive for loading video files for editing between different locations. This thing had all the options for connections that I could've wanted, including both revisions of Firewire and eSATA, which really helped. Plus I could plug it into a clients laptop and show them compiled videos all without switching drives thanks to the USB port.The drive is sturdy and semi-compact, so it's perfect for carrying with you. It's also extremely quiet, which for me is necessary since I'm around the computer all the time.The only annoyance is the blue light on the front that stays lit constantly and the power cord. The blue light is not so bright that it'll blind you, but it is bright enough to make it noticeable. The power cord has a small 2"x3"x1" block in-line, which can kind of be a hassle when you're packing it up or setting it back up.Otherwise, good drive with lots of storage and connectivity options! I'm happy with the purchase!

Right out the box, everything worked fine, my only complaint was that this drive was so incredibly LOUD. After 4 days, it no longer read on my PC. Tried everything and came to conclusion with LaCie tech support that the hard drive was busted.I was on hold with LaCie customer service for nearly an hour only to have a 2 minute conversation with their tech support that said they couldn't do anything because I didn't buy it direct from LaCie. The only thing they said they could do for me, was to have me send the drive to their where house for refurbishment. But considering a bought a new product, I didn't want to spend the money and time for a product that should be new and functional.Called Amazon - they took the return and refunded my money in less than a week. I'm currently looking for a new hard drive now. I've heard good things about LaCie, perhaps I just got a defected one? However, I'm still checking elsewhere.

This is my second lacie drive. This drive is MUCH MUCH louder than my other drive... or any other drive i've used. very annoying... especially since i have two of them going!otherwise, very easy set up. great buy.

Purchased LaCie Quadra 750 to run on 6 yr old Windows XP desktop. Originally worked great - solid appearance, quiet operation, runs cool. Ability to interconnect with my other hard drives to speed up file transfer is a great feature. Bought (3) more LaCie Quadra's because of my experience with this first purchase. And these purchases come at a premium. If you compare the cost per GB, these LaCie drives are expensive compared to other hard drives from comparable well-regarded manufacturers.Within 15 months of my purchase, 3 of my 4 LaCie drives were dead -- and all from the same reason. These drives very heavy, but also very top heavy. If you even gently brush up against them on your desk, they fall over with a loud 'FLAP' due to the heavy outside case. In my case, 3 of my drives immediately died. So for a drive that originally looked like a winner, I now count their purchase as a loss on my part. I've since switched my personal and company hard drives to Buffalo Axis (desktop) and Mini-station Stealth (portable) drives.

I purhcased this Lacie drive in July of 07 and it has stopped working - now Jan 09. I'm not a heavy user of these drives. I use it for backup storage only. I purchased this drive to replace another Lacie drive that imploded after 1.5 years of average use. Sadly, I hadnt backed up my data in approximately 4 months and am now facing an "invasive recovery procedure" to get the data back. Total price for recovery if we decide to go ahead is $2000. Bottom line, after having two different Lacie drives perform well day to day - only to completely implode after about a year and a half - I would opt for another brand.

A very sleek and sexy piece of hardware with it's ribbed case and big blue eye. Heavey and solid. Has all the interfaces you could possibly want. Tons of storage, speedy, and built like an M1 Tank. However beware! My unit stopped working (crashed) after only 3 months of usage. If you put mission critical data on this drive, BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR DATA! The drive crashed after only 3 months of regular usage. I lost all the data on this unit, but luckily I had made a backup of this drive just before the crash. Yes, I am very lucky. LaCie support is acceptable, and fortunately, they will replace the drive. If you purchase this unit, please remember to make a backup of everything you store on this drive. Backup your backup!

I bought it to use with my iMac. After about 4 months, TimeMachine reported it could not access the drive. I had to reformat it and it worked ... for a while. Then it became unaccessable again. I reformatted and within 2 days it was bad.Sorry, but an unreliable backup drive is NOT what I want.

Worked right out of the box. Had it for 2 weeks and no signs of problems. Using the Firewire 800 port plugged into my iMac. Split the hard drive in 2; One for Time Machine, and the rest for my photos/videos.

I'm in shock.Having just moved from Windows to Mac (OS X 10.5.2) I'm used to long, involved nightmare hardware installations. Between OS X and the utilities supplied by LaCie on this drive, the whole business was up and running in about ten minutes. It took me longer to figure out which was the FireWare 800 cable than it did to finish the rest of the installation!I have a new iMac with both FireWire 400 and 800 ports, and I'm using the LaCie as my Time Machine drive, so I opted to use the fastest interface available, the FireWire 800. The installation had four steps:1. Physically attach the footplate to the drive so it could sit on its thin side, as in the photo with this review. Tools: included Allen wrench. Time: 60 sec2. Attach the FW800 cable and the power supply. Plug in same. Tools: none. Time: 60 sec.3. Turn on the drive. Tools: finger. Time: 15 sec.4. Click through the installation program that pops up on the screen. The last click is to inform OS X that this will be my TimeMachine drive. Tools: mouse, finger. Time: 5 min.Total time: 7.25 min. (It took me about 2.5 minutes to figure out which cable to use.)The FireWire interface is so fast, it did the initial TimeMachine 30GB backup in about 30 minutes.The drive is quiet, it's fast, and it has a cool blue light on the front. It also has an auto power switch that detects when the iMac is seeking from the drive and switches on drive power.What's not to like?

I saw all of the good reviews and decided to take a chance on the Lacie. I needed something that worked with "Time Machine." It worked nicely, if somewhat noisily for less than a year. Then it just stopped working. I have had to replace it. If I want to get the information that is there, I need to find a tech person who can retrieve it.Not a reliable or sturdy product.

I really like this drive. It's very well made and looks and feels like a lot of thought went into it's manufacture. It's very quite, and I really like the on/auto/off switch on the back. I use it to just backup files and leave it off when I'm not backing up files. It's a true plug and play....just follow the directions. I'm running Windows XP for home, and the drive mounted right away. I told the LaCie software what OS I was running and it configured the drive for one partition in NTFS for me. Only took a couple of minutes. I used the software that came with it to back up my files, and this is where it went south and the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. First I would have prefered to format the drive into 2 partitions, but the LaCie doesn't give you that option, so I will use Windows to do it instead. The software allowed me to back up all my user docs with no problem, but that was it. Everything else is manual. Plus, the software imbedded itself in my startup scripts, and would cause the computer to halt when it booted becuase I had the drive turned off. Overall I would recommend this drive. It's costs a little extra, but except for the software, I believe it's worth it.

They've changed the design of the power supply, which, hopefully, will correct the problem that the earlier model had. If you're using this with multiple external hard drives, be warned that the speed of the connection between them is limited to the speed of the connection to your computer. For example, if your daisy chain or RAID configuration connects to your computer via Firewire 800, then all of the connections between your external drives will be limited to Firewire 800 or slower, even though all of your external hard drives may be eSata compatible. Also, it's very difficult to create a RAID configuration without reformatting the drive which is to be mirrored.

I have 4 external LaCie drives and I have had problems with the power supply. To the people that have returned it to LaCie I must say i am sorry that you were told to do that, if the issue is the power supply they can replace it. I have had to do this a few times and had two very nice tech support and one 16 year teenager who was rude and very bad attitude. In the last case i actually had to talk to supervisor who turned out to be his buddy.The drives themselves have been OK, but at present two of my !TB and 600GB power supplies are gone out again!Update: Feb 2009 - The power supplies were replaced by a very nice 3rd tech support lady and the drives have been working fine.I have 5 LaCies now with the oldest being 3.25 years old and still ok. My drives are always on.

I have four of these daisy chained to my Mac home network and they work extremely well and can be quickly accessed from my computers. LaCie support is very good as well. I like the idea of being able to add capacity as I go, so this is a great way to store converted video (VCR) data to digital which uses a lot of storage.I have not lost any data and over the years, I had only one problem and it was a defective power cord that LaCie sent me for FREE immediately. Great company to deal with service-wise.

I purchased a Lacie external hard disk back in the day (120gb-- useless now) and it has been working for 10+ years. So, I purchased this one on Jan 9, 2008. It is 20 days past the warranty and it has suddenly died. What happened to LaCie? Regardless of their past reputation, buyers beware of this drive. I have yet to call their customer service department, but I don't expect much considering the experiences of the other reviewers.

I use this drive for recording audio in protools. I've had it for a couple of months now and it has performed flawlessly. It stays cool and quiet. I recommend this drive to anyone in the audio profession.
