This is only my second external drive; my first was also a LaCie. I was pleased with my first drive, but I am already disappointed by this new one's features. It has two panels on the front and the back made to look like polished aluminum, but, in your hands, looks obviously like plastic. Also, you would think and on/off switch would be an obvious inclusion, but this drive doesn't have one. And finally, there is no CD inside the package. Instead, all the files are located inside the drive, even installation files. Although I don't need the installation files, I have to wonder what good are installation files when I have to have the drive installed to view them.

This drive was a breeze to set up. No software to install and the drive has worked flawlessly. Now I have a fault tolerant backup of all my data. The unit is a bit pricey but worth it.

I purchased this as an adjunct for an 8-month-old iMac that was fast gobbling up its internal 320GB HD with backup files -- and for which I'd just installed OS X 10.5 (Leopard). The idea was to isolate and control the monster space requirements of the new Time Machine backup utility. The hook-up and set-up were done in ten minutes, and then I was amazed to see Time Machine hop right in at the end to ask if I wanted to start creating backups on my new drive. Since Time Machine had read my mind, I gave permission and the quiet (there's no fan!) operation took all of 111 minutes to back up 200GB through my Firewire 800 port. Positives: the LaCie 301826 was in-stock and arrived promptly, all the cords and connections are included, Mac set-up is a breeze, it looks nice, it's compact and unobtrusive, it didn't get hot (even if the corrugated-heat-sink claim looks like a stretch), the auto-off feature is a great idea if it works, it seemed to move data fast, and it's pretty quiet. Only one negative: it's really a 700GB drive in terms of usable space. I'll report if anything changes in the next three hours, or beyond, but so far this HD is a winner.

Hi, i bought this one after i first bought the laCie 250GB tripple in 2004. I was waiting for the "fanless" version to come out, so it was worth the wait. It is quite, fast, i like the daisy-chaining capability, since I have one FW port on my PowerBook with usb 1.0 ports. So Everything is cool. I just wish they did not ship with the so short cables (usb, FW, eSata). I can clearily see that they want to save money on those things, the FW cable was so short that i am using the FW cable of my 1st laCie disk. The SW is pre-loaded on the drive, so u better be careful the 1st time you use the disk (they wanted to save on cds) and last, no plastic bags for the cables, so i had the impression that i was opening a 2nd hand drive box.... But performance wise, it's a great product~!

I am using it with Mac OSX, setup is basically plug and play and it works flawlessly with Time Machine. Firewire 800, 400 and USB2.0 gives you lot of flexibility. Very quiet operation.Only reason for not giving it 5 stars is because of misleading advertising. After you format it for Mac you get only 465GB. (Manuals and preloaded utilities consume 0.5GB)

No problems yet, very functional with my new MacBook Pro. One problem is that it doesnt go to sleep when mac is sleeping or even shutdown when used with either firewire...this isnt an issue with the drive as much as the Firewire ports on the mac giving power to those ports at all times. pple of course...was not helpful.

I had previous experience with LaCie which was very good and their tech service quickly solved my problem plus the reviews here were good. So I bought this drive. This drive is formated for the mac and works great right out of the box with my mac. I did not notice in the description that this was formated for the mac but I wanted to format it in FAT32 so it could be used with both mac and windows. But the instructions provided by LaCie were not very clear --- I reformatted it for windows FAT32 on my intel mac but the drive was not recognized by windows machines. It seems that the drive needs special windows software installed on it after it is reformatted.Its been about a month since I sent LaCie an email asking what I needed and where I could down load it --- to date, I have not heard anything from LaCie. It is a good drive but LaCie support sucks.I needed more additional drives, so I bought 4 WesternDigital and am very happy with them. This long time LaCie customer (over the years I have bought at least 5 LaCie drives) is now a happy WD customer.

Compared to Similar Drives:I've owned the drive for about 8 months, and must say that I've loved it from day one. Similar Raid drives that I've had experience with have either burned out or have noisy fans. I also use the Lacie Rugged portable drive. With my MacBook Pro, I've used both intensely with great results. I've had experience with many other Raid and portable drives.Cooling and Noise:Since the hard drives are mounted next to eachother by the skinny side, and not by the fat side like most Raids, they do not generate so much heat for eachother. The drive stays very cool, even after intense hours of running during massive video encoding or batch picture processing. This is also helped since the stress is spread across drives. As mentioned, most Raid's are like a 747 with noise and still stay very hot. This drive is calm, stable, and quite, no matter what you do to it.Speed:Even when daisy-chaining two other HD's and a scanner, this thing is still blazing. With a 100gb transfer of pictures, I clocked it at around 80-100 mb/s. When copying and pasting, it makes a light noise, rather than a loud chug chug clack clack from one side of the HD to the other.Travel and Wear:As a transient college student, I have traveled many time with this drive with no problems. Its been subjected to cheep air conditioners and heaters, along with very humid dorm rooms. No problems, always ran without a hitch. Even though the drive is thin, it still stays very stable with its heavy metal stand.Quality:This thing is a beauty and looks its price. The case and vertical stand are made of solid metal, and you can feel its weight and quality. Its connections are tight and well located. The cooling system is quiet and worked fanastically.Other Reviews:Unfortunately with high-end HD's, who are mostly bought by busy professionals, buyers seem to only take the time to review if they've had a bad experience. Would you write your congressmen to tell him you were happy? If you look at reviews of other Raid drives, such as Western Digital, you'll see similar bad reviews, people saying they switched to Lacie. Those drives are genuinely noisy and have other concerns, however. You don't know if people are throwing things on top of them or knocking them around all of the time, or tearrying them out while there processing data. Overall, a great product product.

This is by far the best external HD I've had. I have absolutely no complaints. I love the fact that it has both Firewire 800 and 400 ports and comes with all the cables. I've had it hooked up to my intel iMac for about a month now, and it's been flawless. It's fast, quiet, and easy to set up and use. All I did was plug it in, install the included software to my computer, and format it. Done! I'm using the included Silverkeeper back-up software with no problems. It's great; it backs up only what's changed since the last backup, is fast, and gives you access to your files directly (unlike Retrospect). In short, I'm glad I purchased this drive.

I'm an end-user, not a real tech-person. And there is nothing I love better than a product that tells you to plug it in and it will work just fine. I did and it does. Suddenly I have a terrabyte of trustworthy storage on my desk for my years and years of digital and digitalized photos. (I have been shooting RAW for two years and my "C" drive was gagging.) I also store off-site but it is a pleasure to tell Lightroom and Photoshop to look for the good stuff on my LaCie. And, when I finally decide to switch over to a MAC some day,the LaCie can quickly change its loyalty with me.

The d2 Quadra 500GB is just exactly what I have been looking for. It is a quiet reliable external hard drive. When I first got it I was amazed about the weight of the package. The sturdy heat dispensing aluminum case is not the lightest but of high quality. Even after longer use, although the drive uses passive cooling, it does not get hot, only warm. Setup and installing the drive was really easy. I use it under Windows Vista and it was usable in just minutes without any problems. The included backup software serves basic needs, but I use third party software for regular backups.The auto power function is really nice, it automatically shuts the drive down after disconnecting the USB cable (I have only used the USB connection so far).The blue light indicating the use is cool and not annoying. The four connection options, including cables, are quite nice and good for the future, although for now I only use USB.After having it for about two months I can say that I really love the d2 Quadra and would recommend it to anyone.

I still have an old d2 Quadra that is working fine at 150g. This 500g drive was inexpensive and it is impressively quiet compared to the older model. Feels good, looks good, and is doing a good job.

Purchased product to store my iTunes. Within one week the drive crashed. I called customer support and they refused to help me and honor the warranty. I eventually (year and a half later) reset the entire drive after finding no other option to save or retrieve my files, losing 10,000 songs. I began reloading the library and the system crashed again. LaCie refused to help saying the warranty had expired, but had I purchased one now, they had an extended warranty. Do not mess with LaCie equipment.

I purchased the La Cie because it met my need for a external HD at 500 GB.I plugged it in and it immediately recognized my Macbook. It was simple to setup and works great. I found that after a few days of use I could find documents orphotos, etc. that I need to locate I had been working on with great ease with the built in Time Machine thatcomes with all the new Macs. For example, I Just open Pages or IPhoto and then open clickon the Time Machine icon on my dock and presto I am in Time Machine's program. Backupsare a breeze that I no longer have to worry about. I highly recommend La Cie 301825U d2Quadra 500.

I have several LaCie hard drives. I have not been disappointed in any of them. They work effortlessly with my G5 Mac and my Mac Powerbook. The TB Quadra I can hook up with my Firewire connections or USB 2.0 connections. I haven't used the eSATA connection. But either connections I use it always worked perfectly with my editing, retrieving, and saving video that I work with on a constant basis.CarlCharms Video Productions

While overall satisfied with the unit I have a glitch that is random in nature. Sometimes when I boot up the system gets hung up in the boot process and freezes. Solution is to unplug the unit and reboot wherein the computer fires up normally. I then replug the unit in and wait for it to happen randomly next time I turn on the system. I have found no reason or cause for this glitch.

Excellent hard drive runs quite and smooth.Only complaint that I have is it won't hot swap to eSata output when plugged into computer.Firewire and Usb hook up work fine when hot swapped between computers.But computer won't recognize ESata unless you plug eSata port into desktop and then restart computer.I purchased the hard drive to use the eSata port because it is so fast compared to Firewire and Usb to move files between different computers.So it is real unhandy to have to restart computer every time you use the eSata output of hard drive on a different computer.If not for that I would give unit 5 stars.

This drive is awesome. It is super quiet and easy to use. Basically plug and play. I have Windows XP pro and Vista premium. I just plugged it thru the USB and eSata inputs and worked like a charm and no issues. I haven't tried the fire wire inputs (yet). I've had this drive for about two months and had no issues of any kind. I had too download the backup software from LaCie's website because my PC crashed when I was running the backup software already installed with the drive. Just like the instruccion booklet says "in case the PC lost power during installation". I did three backups totalling about 200GB and made a small dent. Before the backups my PC's read the capacity of my 1 TB drive as 930GB. That's kinda of a bummer, but there's nothing you can do about how PC's read the capacity of a drive. In summary, awesome drive. No problems. 1 USB, 1 eSata (1.5,3.0), 2 Firewire (400 and 800). Plenty of options for the future. Recommend this drive.

I'm happy with this drive. Four interfaces provide me with flexibility. It's very quiet and performs well. I'm using it on a Mac. I didn't use the included software since I didn't need it. Using the Mac to set up the drive went very smoothly with no problems encountered. I liked my first Lacie 750 so much that I bought another one!UPDATE: One of the LaCie drives crashed on me after a thunderstorm induced power outage. I had both LaCie's on a UPS but the power outage could have lasted longer than the UPS did (I wasn't home at the time). One LaCie is fine. The other would spin up but make "clunking" noises and I couldn't access it from my computer. I removed the bad drive from the enclosure and installed a new one which is now working fine. I must say it's easy to replace a drive in the LaCie enclosure.

I use this as an addition to my iMac. I use it for the Time Machine feature. Works perfectly for that. Haven't had to touch it since.
