This external hard drive runs extremely quiet. It was extremely easy to hook up and begin running-up and running within 10 minutes. Using the FireWire 800 allowed me to download very heavy HD content from my camcorder in real time without any interruption. It has done everything I had hoped it would. I feel this product works better than my Western Digital 500 GB external hard drive mainly because I have the option of the higher FireWire. I have been using this product extensively for 6 weeks and have nearly 250-300 GB stored on this LaCie and I have had no trouble retrieving any of my data.

Overall, this is a really nice drive. Its fairly quiet, responsive and a good value. The only problem I have is that after loading it up with music and videos, it seems to have periods where it would struggle with playback, skipping and lagging during both music and video playback over the eSATA connection. However, I ran a quick defrag on the drive and that seems to have fixed the problem. Other than that, its been good to me. You can't go wrong with Lacie!

This drive is extermely reliable and fast. Have been using daily for about 6 months and no isses to date. Has multiple options for connection (USB, Firewire, eSATA) and even includes the necessary cables, which makes it ideal for future compatability. Set up was easy (plus and play) and instructions were straightfoward. Software is adequate for simple backup of drive/files. No sound (as there is no fan). Drive never get hot even under constant use (ie video playback, etc). Lacie's technical service does leave something to be desired however. Had a few basic questions not related to any functional problems, and they couldn't answer. Would definetly recommend for someone looking for reliable and solid external drive at a good price.

I recently purchased 2 of these 500 giggers from Amazon for my Macbook Pro. I read these work real well with Macs and I wanted one to use for video storage with iMovie, and the other to use with Time Machine as a backup. Their setup was easy as pie. Just plug them in, the Mac sees them instantly and kicks in their Lacie format wizard. In a quick 2-3 step process, I had them formatted in the MAC OS X Extended format in just minutes. I made my first Time Machine backup (and several since), and moved my video files (iMovie events) off. These drives are very quiet, look cool, and just work like a champ!

I took away one star because it doesn't have a power switch. It works fine, I think there is not much that can be said about a the external drives in this category.

I ordered this 1TB hard drive to backup my pictures, music and movies form other hard drives with Carbon Copy Cloner. I like the multiple interface I can daisy chain my 500GB rugged to the FW800 port and works perfectly. I didn't install the backup softwares since they are not compatible with Leopard. The HD turns off automatically when I eject it from Finder which is a good feature but sadly the supplied cables are too short so you won't be able to hide the drive under your desk...

I bought Lacie d2 Quadra external hard drive about a month ago.The hard drive looks very nice and more important works very good and pretty fast. I use the FireWire800 cable (don't have eSATA).Till now, the only problem I'm facing is that sometimes after rebooting my machine, the drive is not automatically recognized, and I need to turn it off and on again in order to be added to the drives list.I would recommend it to my friends.

Hi.I bought this drive about a month ago, and it has been as good as advertised, if not better.I use it for two purposes. First as a "Time Machine" backup drive for my MacBook, and as the primary drive for my iTunes library. It has performed both functions flawlessly.One of the many great features I like about it is that it goes to "sleep" along with the rest of the system I have it hooked up to (the computer and my home theater) when it's not being used. So if I happen to fall asleep in the middle of movie being streamed from iTunes, once the movie is done, my laptap goes to sleep, and the drive stops spinning. Once I press a button on the laptop or the remote, the whole thing starts up again. So it's a nice addition to my computer-based theater system.The price can't be beat. Amazon had the lowest price of all the companies I checked (sort of...the price was just a little higher than the MacMall, but Amazon had free shipping, making their price the net-lowest). Considering my brother bought a LaCie 160 GB drive a couple of years ago for almost $200, it's an outstanding value for the price.The USB cable could stand to be just a bit longer.==>Pete

So far, this has been pretty easy to set up - I didn't download the shortcuts and bells and whistles on it, but it apparently has shortcut capabilities. The only complaint that I have is that it actually only has 465.5 gigs and not 500. For some reason their downloads and other stuff take up a whopping 34.5 gigs of memory - that is a lot considering that they advertise that it is a 500 gig. I tried to take of unnecessary downloads in other languages and such, but it didn't help. Other than that - it does run beautifully and have had no problems thus far.

In my opinion, the LaCie 301285U works perfect: I use it to make daily/weekly backups of my web design works and haven't had any problem until now. Works smoothly with NAS's and although it's not the best option to carry it when you are traveling etc (not very small and heavy in my personal opinion), it's a perfect solution for keeping your important stuff safe.Only thing I don't like at all is that sometimes it has a little but noticeable noise inside, like when those old HDD's on computers were installing software etc..

LaCie 301825U d2 Quadra 500 GB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/ USB 2.0 External Hard DiskI have an iMac G5 PPC. This external HD was highly recommended to me and since receiving it, it has worked flawlessly. I am extremely happy with it.

We haven't had this drive very long, however so far it has performed flawlessly. We love the all aluminum case - much more attractive and robust than those other external hard drives with plastic cases.

I recently bought this drive because I had been happily using another LaCie Drive for my backups for a while, but it was starting to fill up. This seems like a perfectly fine drive, but I don't like it as well as my other LaCie drive for three reasons:1) There's no power button. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it.2) It's quite a bit louder than my other LaCie drive. It's still fairly quiet, but the other model is virtually silent. This one is not.3) The power supply is of the type that plugs directly into an electrical outlet. It's wider than a standard electrical plug, so if you plug it into a power strip it renders the outlets on either side of it useless. The other model's power supply has a thin cord that connects it to power, so it doesn't monopolize half of your power strip.The only benefit that this one has over the other one is the price ($20 cheaper as of this writing). This seems like a solid drive, but don't buy it if you want to be able to turn it off.

This La Cie was easy to set up and partition. For the most part, it works great. I've had it about a month and it has made my computer crash only twice. I use it every day. Perhaps someone who has used it for longer is a better judge of its reliability. If anything goes haywire on it, you can be sure that I'll update this review. Hopefully, it'll continue it's good performance.

This is a great external drive for those who want the flexibility of FW400/800 and eSATA in one unit. It is fast and quiet- mine is on my desk right next to the Mac PowerBook that I use on a daily basis. Bundled s/w is very good and set up is a snap.

lacie makes a good hard drive, not pretty to look at, but doesn't over heat easily. It's not exactly 500 GB, it's somewhere around 450ish. Check out iOmega brands too and compare prices before you buy. Also, my professor recommended that I get lacie brand because they last. So far, it's been good and reliable. I use it primarily on a mac and no problems yet.

I've never used LaCie before but figured it was a trustworthy brand. After 11 months of smooth operation, the hard drive suddenly wouldn't mount and kept making a slow clicking noise. The whole point of a backup drive is that it stay reliable. I've had a cheap Mercury drive for 6 years now with no problems. I've contacted LaCie support who thinks the problem might be solved with a different adapter. I find this doubtful, but once it arrives, I'll follow up on this review.

Based on the other reviews, I feel really unlucky. I am sending in my 2nd drive tomorrow. The 1st replacement was worse than the original drive. Both made loud clicking sounds when going into sleep mode, but the 2nd one also made a strange buzzing sound just before the click. LaCie said it could be a sign of imminent drive failure. I have to send it into LaCie because Amazon won't do a replacement twice. I hope the 3rd time's the charm...

It lacks a power switch, but it does have a power-save feature. It is activated after the drive is disconnected from a host computer. But if you power it on without connecting it to anything, it will spin forever. The drive must be connected to a computer and then disconnected from it before the power-save feature activates. This may be inconvenient for those connecting the hard drive to the rear of a desktop computer.The metal shell of the enclosure is sturdy and attractive; it also dissipates heat very quickly. After most nights when it's not active, it feels like ice in the morning (I like to keep my home generally cold), which is a good thing.The drive is speedy; its burst transfers save time. I've always appreciated LaCie's reliability and simplicity in its products.But I'll complain with everybody else that the A-to-B USB cable that comes with it is far too short. The power supply also is a wall transformer, which may block other outlets when plugged in.

This is my fourth LaCie drive, over a period of about ten years. None of them failed on me--I've just upgraded because I needed more space, and since I've had such good luck with LaCie, I stuck with them. This one was bought specifically to replace a Fantom drive that I made the mistake of buying because it was so cheap. That one crapped out after only about 3 years of only occasional use, and it will certainly be my last Fantom drive.This is a very quiet unit, and does what you want from storage--it stores lots of stuff! LaCie rocks!

Great drive. Plug it in and run the quick setup and you are off and running. As simple as that. I use it with my iMac, running backups using TimeMachine. I also configured it to have an Exchange partition and use that to swap files with Windows PCs.
