I really like the form factor for this drive, and it works well - fast, and quiet. I use this drive primarily for archival of data from my desktop; mostly photos. Although the HD is working very nicely for this purpose, I took away 2 stars because the drive does not have an on-off switch. So to power down the drive you must either unplug the drive from the wall socket or turn off the whole power strip/surge suppressor if using one (and you should use one...). The alternative is to leave the drive on all the time - not at all recommended if you use it for archival purposes like I do.

LaCie d2 Quadro has a nice external profile (looks great); a lot quieter than my other Seagate external drive; comes with all types of connection cables (esata, 1394b, 1934a, USB); operational manual (pdf file) is good. Online support (email) is good. Just a little pricy. I have no idea of the durability of this drive, so based on Price/Performance, I give it a 4 stars.

Bought this to manage my media on a MB Pro. The eSata connection is incredibly fast. Moved 70GB of data onto it in minutes. Playback is immediate. Plus, the aluminum finish looks awesome next to the Mac. And its incredibly quiet. While more expensive than drives with comparable storage the eSata connection and "fanless cooling" are worth it. Highly recommend!

Very pleased with this product. I use it on a daily basis and swop it between Mac & Windows computers with no problems. It does appear to get hot at the bottom after several hours of use. This is to be expected. It hasn't altered the performance, but as a safeguard , I balance it on 2 CD cases to allow a little more air circulate at the bottom. As mentioned, an on-off button would have been nice , but that really isn't the end of the World.I paid 100 for this & believe it to be of great value

I've had this drive for about 3 months now. I have owned LaCie Products in the past and enjoyed good luck with them. This drive is very SLOW, much slower than my other 5 Hard Drives. Also, it has no on off switch nor does it turn off by itself when there is signal going to it. My Past LaCie equipment turned themselves on and off as I turned my system on and off. Not this drive! So, the drive runs 24/7, not a good thing. I rate this drive barely acceptable.

I am a photographer and bought one of these about a year ago to store all my photoshoots. For the last year It's been kept on a desk, out of the sun, not moved around a lot - basically it's been right next to my computer for a year or so. I've only used it about a dozen times to do backups of my hard drive.Well the other day I went to load it up and the thing was broken. Was told it would cost about $1000 to get the drive fixed. They also told me that this is a common problem among LaCie drives.Don't waste your money.

As other reviewers have said, this drive is very good.However, the drive does not have on/off function. It does not have on/off switch, and it does not automatically go off when the connected computer goes to sleep/hibernate/off. So unless you unplug the drive, it is on 24/7.When I saw the review that it does not have on/off switch, I assumed that the automatic on/off function is present instead of the switch. However it was my mistake apparently.Besides that, it is very good drive. I was about to return it but instead I decided to use plugging-unplugging .. since besides the cost of return, I actually liked the drive.

I've used this drive for over a month with no issues whatsoever. It is on a shelf at eye level about 3 feet from my head and I only noticed drive noise once. The drive comes pre-formatted in FAT32, and I wish I had taken a moment to reformat it as NTFS, but that's a minor issue. It plugged in with no problems whatsoever with my XP Professional set-up.

This is a black box that is as basic as it could be. Only USB connection, power connection, and a tiny power light. There isn't even a power switch. Means that it is always on unless I crawl under my desk to unplug it. Wouldn't be a problem but I bought this for my Macbook that might only be on the desk once a week.Was a good price for 500GB.

I've grown to love LaCie hard drives - good design, multiple connection options and reliability. This drive is no exception, it's fast and not too expensive. If you can, spring for the 1TB version of this drive.

DON'T buy ANY LaCie external hard drive, ever! They fail. That's all there is to it. LaCie will not service ANY product outside the 1-year warranty period, not even for an outrageous fee. You're just SOL if anything goes wrong. They refuse to stand behind their products, and there's a reason for that. Their products are garbage.One of my 3 LaCie 250GB D2 drives failed after less than 3 years of light, intermittent use. The power supply board inside the housing is bad. There's nothing wrong with the drive itself, nor with the external power supply. It just won't power on. The only solution is to rip the drive out of the case and connect it to the computer's IDE bus directly, or put it into a new external case. Major PITA.An external Firewire drive is considered to be an archival-grade storage medium, and should be capable of running continuously, 24/7, for at least 10 years. LaCie's drives do not meet this standard by any stretch of the imagination. I used to work in a college media production lab, and I've seen these drives fail within DAYS. Always the same problem - the internal power board is fried.

Had it for about a month now and I've had no major problems with it. The only negative thing about it is that the drive itself is always on, and you need to unplug it from it's power source in order for it to turn off. That may be a problem for some people, but it isn't for me, so it's all good. If people are curious, the actual storage space they allow you is 465GB, which is still a lot of space.

I had read mixed reviews of LaCie but thought I'd give them a try. Well, my first and last time. The drive started going downhill within a couple of months. First, it wouldn't mount a partition on my Mac, then it wouldn't mount at all. In fact, it wouldn't boot up and made a sing-song buzzing noise. Support acknowledged that a drive mechanism had failed. Very helpfully recommended a data recovery service for which I would have had to pay.Why can't they make a decent product so we wouldn't have to worry about losing data? My advice: Avoid LaCie drives! There are many others to choose from.

The LaCie d2 Quadra 500 GB has been doing the job I want since I purchased it 6 weeks ago.I'm running Leopard. Storing all my scanned photos. Highly recommended for the price.

ordered and received this hd within 3 days (gotta love amazon prime), plugged it into my MBP and it made horrible sounds and didn't mount - figured it was "DOA", used the amazon "call me" feature, and they sent out another one right away. the second one got here two days later and it's been working like a charm ever since.

I have read alot of bad reviews of Lacie product and a lot of good ones. Some say there is a horrible clicking noise, well, this wasn't true for the one I bought. Not all HD are perfect but, so far this one has been.Its not to install. Less noise than any WD product Ive bought.I would definitely recommend this one.UPDATE 2013: 5 YEARS AFTER BUYING THIS IT STILL WORKS WELL!DESERVES 5 STARS!

I bought the drive for extra backup to my system. I did not bother to install the backup software that comes with it. So I do not know anything about its utility. The drive works well, is easy to install, and has run silently for the month or so that I have had it, and I have no complaint about it. The price was very good for a 500GB "plain black box" external Hard Drive.

I have had my new hard drive for about a month now and have had no problems. It has handled extensive use my multiple simultaneous users with no ill effects. It is quiet and effective. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing a hard drive of this size who wants to get the most from his/her money.

I bought this drive and for the first days it seems to work fine. Then it started acting bizarre. Even if I am not writing on the disk I can hear the drive spin loudly from my living room. So I basically returned and I used the money to buy another USB drive. I refused to go with the same brand. I ended up buy an HP USB drive for the same capacity.Perhaps my product has defects. I give 2 stars.

The LaCie 500 GB hard drive does a good job of what it is best at, namely providing backup space for your files. It runs quite quietly, accesses quickly, up and downloads efficiently. Minor drawbacks are the lack of an on/off switch... always on while plugged in, and the disk backup software is pretty basic and minimally documented.But its doing what I need it to do so I'm happy with it.
