This only thing that bother me with this hard drive is that there is no switch button, so it has to be plugged in before connecting it to the computer via an usb port. If not, the computer will not recognize the device and you will have to unplug and plug the hard drive again to the electric plug...

I ordered this device for my wife since she takes a large number of digital pictures as well as download a lot of music (legally, of course). The hard drive has performed flawlessly. It was well worth the purchase price & has been a great help with the storage of the pictures and music. The device can be left on for hours & there is no issue of it overheating.

I had this drive for a year, and it worked great. had all my files on. Used it as a backup for my laptop, and to hold all my pictures, musics, and DVD backups. It did a great job. up until it died. No warning. I plugged it in one day and I hear this clicking noises. I open it up (Voided the warrenty, if it was still under) and took out the HD and tried it in my tower. No luck. Lost my whole movie collection. Inside it was a seagate barracuda IDE drive. This is a good drive BUT DO NOT COUNT ON IT. and, most importantly, it is not a mobile drive. I'm guessing moving it around to much did it in.I'm buying a LeCie All terrain to replace it.

Nice little drive. Speed seems on par with other USB drives I've used, but this is the quietest. It is virtually silent. The only thing lacking is an on/off switch (minus 1 star). No problems during the first month of use.

It looks as tough as a tank, but it isn't. Once it crashed eveyone told me it's a very delicate piece of equipment. I did not carry mine around, for one, it is too heavy. I also only fired it up when I did my monthly backups, so I didn't have it running all the time, so it shouldn't have over heated as others have mentioned. But after less than 11 months, the computer stopped recognizing it---it hums but never gets anywhere. I changed the ports, bought new cables, all to no avail. As it happens, my computer had failed and I was relying on the LaCie back up drive to retrieve my files--what a shock when I couldn't get to them. Tried other computers, both MACs and PCs, and still no sightings of the LaCie drive on the desktop.Even though still under warranty, I got NO HELP from the LaCie help desk. Their suggestions to use a data recovery application is unhelpful since I couldn't see the drive to select it. They don't even give you a toll free number to call. They also expect you to pay to ship the heavy thing to them even under warranty. They give NO HELP to retrieve data. If you allow anyone to open the case it voids the warranty, but they won't send you the hard drive separately, even if you send them the item intact and it turns out that it's something else.Head aches, head aches....if it worked, it would be great, but it's not the drive that is important, it is the data and if Lacie hasn't figured out a way to help clients when their products fail, they shouldn't be in this business.buyer beware! I wouldn't buy another LaCie ever again. Also learned my lesson, two copies are still not enough, especially if one of them is LaCie.

It may work fine, but chances are in 3, 6 or 12 months you'll be stuck with a lovely-looking Porsche-designed paperweight.I bought this from another merchant about a year ago and paid around $130 for it. There's a reason the price has been dropping since then for this product: it's junk and people are beginning to realize it. I guess most users bought it around the same time I did because I don't recall seeing all the bad reviews on the web for this hard drive when I was initially shopping around. But now that I search for them after experiencing problems with mine, the bad news is all over the place.I use my LaCie as extra storage for music and video that simply couldn't fit on my 20GB laptop hard drive. At first, there was no problem moving huge (700+) MB files, dozens of mp3s, often all at the same time, although it would take a while (I'm still stuck at USB 1.1, but that's a whole other matter).Anyway, the drive was a good solution for storage and backup of my personal files. A few weeks ago, however, it completely unmounted (vanished) while transfering large files, and the files I was moving were corrupted and lost for good. I've since tried copying the files, verifying that it worked, then delete the original off my laptop -- that doesn't work either with large files, but at least I still have the originals.Once the computer unmounts, the only way I can access the drive again is to turn it off and restart it. Luckily, the files I have on the drive (over 100GB right now) are OK, and I can tranfer smaller files, but I'm afraid it'll be a matter of time before it fails completely and I'll lose my data forever. That's why I'm purchasing another drive by another manufacturer right now.I advise people to look around -- there are better manufacturers and products out there. Of course, external hard drives (or hard drives in general) aren't perfect, but the track record for this put it way at the bottom of the pile.

This is the best external drive we purchased out of a range of external drive products and it gets one star because it did last a little longer than the other products. We purchased the first drive as a replacement for a failed Maxtor and the La Cie lasted a few months longer and had to be replaced.Six drives later we have finally been forced to find a hardware specialist to design and produce a custom made box from Addonics which we have been using for some time now without failure. The last of our La Cie drives has finally failed after 8 months in use and we will be returning it together with a legal demand for a full acceptable explanation for the failure of all these various drives or a full refund from the retailer.I would be a fool to recommend this drive (or any of the other major brands) to any person who relies on their external drive for mission critical backups.

this is an excellent external drive. I do video and media editing, and use these drives extensively (I have this 1 TB as well as a 2 TB). Working off of a Mac, having the firewire 800 connection is great. the build is sturdy - can't complain about the looks - I guess they would be more industrial than "stylish" - but that's ok, it gives the impression of dependability - which it's lived up to so far.I can highly recommend it for anyone needing fast, external storage.

Stand back a few feet and this little drive is somewhat attractive. Inch forward and you'll soon discover this is a true bimbo of a drive. I suppose it's too much to ask from my cute little drive that the AC plug stays in. Upon picking up the drive this necessary little connection lost it hold without much of a jolt. FA Porsche has truly designed a Yugo of a drive.

To make it simple, this drive failed shortly after the 1-year warranty expired. LaCie will not repair or replace it since it's out of warranty. Their customer support basically told me that they couldn't help me, and to go away and figure out the problem. I ended up removing the Seagate drive and installing it in a new enclosure, and it works perfectly. The problem was with the LaCie enclosure that failed, and literally doesn't have any moving parts! The product failed without warning, and that's when I came to realize that I was standing in a barren wasteland of LaCie customer support. I realize that things break, but to have no support is ridiculous.

The casings on these drives blow huge chunks. We've had two literally start smoking. One was only 2 weeks old. We simply went out and purchased two new casings (other brands) and they work fine. Yes, we could have pissed and moaned to Lacie and gone thru all of the red tape/hoops to get one replaced, but we were under a tight deadline and did not want to deal with the "we are unable to duplicate the said problem ergo you can't get a refund".Anyway, there time is done move onto the G-Raids, we'll see how long they last. Hopefully, with better customer service will prevail. Most people, purchasing these drives, are using them in a professional capacity and should be treated on the same level. The fact that Lacie will not own up to their product's well documented faults is a travesty.Who's got next 'cause it Lacie is thru.... Basic courtesy may have helped keep them alive, but we live int the USA and we have freedom of choice. Bye-Bye Lacie!!!!!Sorry, to vent!

I have been a long-time advocate of LaCie. I snubbed my nose at the nay-sayers who complained of the drives. i even doubted that customer service could be this bad. well, i've come around.I own 6 LaCie Drives. 3 have failed me in the last 4 months. LaCie won't take them back, though the did take one in for service, claim the rattling sound of the fan or something was normal, and send it back to me. granted, they called, but only once and they didn't wait to hear back from me before returning the drive unfixed, and i had to pay one-way shipping!i am DONE WITH LACIE. when i told them i'd lost my data, they said i should have had it backed up. wait! that's what this drive was for!!!sorry guys. but i'm done.[...]Amazon has been very helpful and they are going to help me in any way they can. Props for Amazon. but don't buy LaCie. as the last review i read told me before i purchased it anyway, "it's not a question of if this drive will fail, but when."

When shopping for external hard drives one is bound to hear the name Lacie. The Oregon-based vendor has always produced quality external drives for various applications. The drive we received has carried on the Lacie legacy. We start off by looking at the outside: Most external drives are not exactly pretty, and consumers often hide them under desks or in cabinets. I would be happy to add this drive to the top of my desk along with other eye candies. The design is sleek and elegant and could easily go on top of any CEO's desk. The drive itself has no buttons on the front, but a biometric reader on the top. The rest of the drive has a brushed metal look that is quite nice - considering it is a plastic case. Now for the features on the inside: there's no shortage. The fingerprint software allows for up to five users, including an administrator. This feature is excellent in a business environment where multiple people might be working on a sensitive and secret project. The fingerprint recognition requires two different fingerprints to ensure in the event you somehow lose a finger you can still access the drive. I found the software very accurate and did not need to swipe my finger more than once. The installation software along with the install instructions are very easy and user friendly.Overall this drive is one of the nicest external drives to come into the office in a long time. The good style that meets excellent function makes this a top drive. One of the high points about this drive that will catch most consumers eyes is the price tag. A 120 GB is available for $ 129.99 and the whopping 500 GB for only $299.99.

I have (2) 500gigs, (1) 200 gig - all Lacie Drives. The first 500 gig crashed and I lost everything. Luckily it was still uner a 1 year warranty and I got a new one. Unforutnatly, they erased everything and couldn't recover any data. I've heard that some of their earlier versions of the 500 gig drives did this but should be fixed. Do yourself a favor, if you value your data, go with 2 drives and back them up nightly. It's a piece of mind that's worth the price. Since that drive crashed, my other drives seem to work great. I've also tried other drives...like a Maxtor 1TB drive that I spent almost $900 on about a year ago. That drive crashed and was replaced with a new one...which just crashed again. Unfortunately, It's no longer covered under warranty. Again...BACK UP YOUR BACK UP!!!! It's the only way you'll have piece of mind.

I've used one of these drives for about 15 months on a G4Mac, firewire 800, running Mac Server 10.4. Runs about 14-16 hours per day, 6 days a week. We back up (we use T-Backup) to a second & third identical drive (A to B, A to C) every night. The backup drives only run during the backup. The primary drive failed during a recent backup session (what lousey luck!). Drive clicks..won't mount..disk utility says NG. I can't tell if one of the 250's inside is not spinning up or wether the head mechanism is NG. We've been using LaCie drives of various capacities for many years. This is only our second failure. It does seem to be a short time for a drive but the drive gets alot of work. The drive enclosure does seem to run pretty warm. My guess is a cooling problem. I noticed recently that their 1 TB drive (4 250's inside) has an internal "smart fan". I think I'll get a little fan to blow over the drive housing to keep it cooler? Anyway, I just bought a replacement. I'm sure hoping I don't experience the repetitive failures that others have noted here.

We have been using 5 of these drives via 800 Firewire Interfaces. In less than a year, 1 is dead, click, click, click dead. Another one gives every indication that it is fine however when a backup is written to it, it crawls. The other three seem to be working ok but I am skeptical as to how much longer before I am replacing all 5. These disks should be more reliable!! I am looking elsewhere as we replace the remaining three that are still working.

This hard drive is great. I typically use it with the 800 interface and also plugged into AC power. Some for backup but mostly for Final Cut scratch and it's plenty fast for everything. It comes with three or four cables including a 4-6 pin firewire 400 (1394 or whatever) for the digital camcorder which it a little extra tidbit that's nice. Good product, and I'd rather get 250GB at $130 than 500GB at $400 something, it's easier to move projects around and isn't hard to switch out drives.

This is the second LaCie triple interface (USB/FW400/FW800) drive I've purchased, in each case for amateur musicians who wanted a Firewire drive to use for audio recording. These folks will be using them for rare recording sessions and to transfer material already on other media (ADAT or DA88 MDMs, CD, etc.), so they will spend most of their time in storage and don't need to stand up to daily studio work. For that I'd recommend a Glyph. All the needed cables are included (unlike some others I've bought), and everything works fine in a recording session with Pro Tools, right out of the box. Having USB allows owners access to the material on home PCs without Firewire (although these owners probably won't try to do that). Having FW400 and FW800 allows rapid access where FW800 is available, without requiring adapters where only FW400 is available. I've heard no complaints, but I can't give it five stars because I don't actually use this drive myself, and it only gets light use anyway, so I can't compare it to other external hard drives I use frequently.
