I bought it strickly for backup. It works great. It's a great investment. Being USB portable it's one of the few things you can take with you to a new computer. My only regret was that I didn't buy a 500GB.The only thing that sucked was their packaged backup software. I did some research on line & downloaded "backup4all". It saves the backed up files as zip's. There's a bunch of backup softwares out there & I don't have a clue which is the best but I can attest that this one works great with the LaCie & is easy to use.

Drive arrived in perfect condition, fired up in minutes and runs like a champ. Transfer times, even for large backups, are as advertised (i.e. brief). Absolutely trouble-free.

This is the second external LaCie hard drive that I purchase. I have had the first one for a couple of years, it is a 250 GB unit and have not had any trouble with it. I have both now connected to my iMac. Just purchased the second unit, 500 GB, hooked it up in early December and have not had any trouble with it whatsoever. I had read some negative reviews on these hard drives but based on my sole experience, I cannot complain at all. They are quiet, they even look good together next to my printer and my iMac. My sister is a Graphic Designer, owns her own business and has several of these hooked to many Macs. She has owned Macs and LaCie hard drives for years and has never complained about them. She is the one who originally recommended the brand when I was first shopping for an external hard drive for my iMac. They are also extremely easy to hookup, format, and use. I highly recommend them.

My third LaCie disk (have one 200GB triple interface, 1 100GB triple rugged and now 1 500GB triple), I'm pleased to say these desktop models are among the best in their class. Ultra quiet, super fast and ultra reliable, I can't think of another brand or model with which I'd trust my most precious digital memories. I have one for scheduled backups only (200GB), and I use the 500GB for novice movie/sound editing and simply to download and store mass amounts of media files. Can't recommend it higher.

I only use this drive for backup from an iMac over the FireWire 400 port. Performance has been decent, I have had no problems, install was a snap, and the noise level is minimal.

You might find this to be pertinent...I bought the same style LaCie about a year ago, but the 250 GB version. This unit was defective right out of the box. I couldn't use it AT ALL! Very loud random clicking sounds. I phoned the company the day it arrived, and they graciously replaced it. A year later, the replacement is still working with no apparent problem, although I hear a much softer version of the clicking--which sounds ominous to me, given the history. (Who can know whether it's normal?)Thinking that was just a fluke (I should read more!), I recently bought two of LaCie's little stackable drives that match the Mac Mini. I've barely started to use those (strictly for backup), but so far, they're doing fine. My advice would be to steer clear of any LaCie drive that is of roughly the same physical shape as the one in question, since they might be subject to the same design flaw. The little mini-Mac drives are of a significantly different shape, so obviously have a different mechanical design--and hopefully better. And if you do still go with LaCie, also be careful not to buy a noisy one. Don't know if they still sell them, but I stopped using an older LaCie drive simply because it was extraordinarily noisy. Specifically ask.

The 500GB is a RAID of two 250GB HDs. Mine had Maxtor HDs and they went to sleep constantly which is not a good idea for a server. The enclosure got very hot when stacked horizontally in the optional d2 rack. One week adfter it was off warranty, the enclosure had a catastrophic failure. I also had a 250GB in this series and the HD and chipset were replaced under warranty and then the circuit board failed off warranty.

It has been the most hassle-free piece of hardware I've ever used. I simply opened up the box and plugged in the cables. The drive was FAT32 formatted and my Airport Extreme base station recognized it immediately after I hooked it up. It now runs as a network drive.Looks and feel: cool design from packaging & box, to the actual drive.I'm very pleased with it thus far.

Purchased my 500gB drive 11/8/2005. Failed yesterday. Called LaCie. Jeremy at LaCie tech support was little help, other than to tell that it may be the power block, and to try buying one to see if that's the deal. After opening up the case, enclosed are 2 Maxtor 6L25ORO 250gB drives. After some limited testing, they both appear good, which points to the bridge card. Crapola. Thanks, LaCie.I will say that I own 4 Porsche 250gB externals, and they've been no problem at all.

I bought three of these for a huge project. Two have failed.Buy a GTech maxtor or any other manufacturer. LaCie are junk andI will never touch their products again. The drives are third party drives.I tried pulling out the drives and enclosing then in an external enclosurebut discovered the two drives in the 500g are raid striped and difficult torescue when they will inevitably die.

We needed to quickly extend the capacity of our image scanning workstations, and this LaCie 1 TB was plug and play as advertised. The drive is quiet and the case never seems to get hot. I do wish these things had internal rather than external power supplies.

LaCie replaced the HD and the chipset after only a month. When the HD was off warranty, the circuit board failed. I also own a 120GB and two 500GB drives in this series. The FW400 port fell off the 120GB circuit board. The 500GB enclosure had a catstrophic failure one wek after it was off warranty. I expect the second 500GB to fail also.

This drive was purchased to store large quantities of static data. First drive failed within 2 months of purchase. Was able to recover portion of data after purchasing additional tools. Had to pay shipping and unit was out of service for 1 month. Five months later another disk failure no ability to recover data. Had to pay shipping to have refurbished unit supplied, again a lag in uptime. After a year of service the drive failed again. Technical support could not even answer whether the unit was under warranty. Very down on Technical support and reliability of product. Disks run very warm and poor heat dissipation is why drives failed. Internal drives had three year warranty if purchased from manufacture. You can not get replacements directly from the manufacture and LaCie does not give you a three year warranty.

I liked this ext. hd because it has Firewire 800. This is a must for the highest speed transfers to backup your computer or large data sets.Push the blue button to turn on and off, don't forget to unmount/eject first tho.If the unit goes to sleep, the wake time is a bit long, but that's very minor.Works great for my macbook pro, and with multiple ports, any computer is accommodated.I also bought a maxtor 1tb hd and it is just as good...only shorter and more boxy. I like Lacie's thinner profile, but it was more expensive than the Maxtor unit.i never tried the software, I only store my video and photo collections so I just drag and drop.Overall, a near perfect product. Only improvement needed is even faster cables and faster storage media...only in the future...

I first bought one to back up all my data, and purchased another one about a month later to back the first drive up, thinking I will be covered. Little did i know both will fail within a week of one another one yr later. I contacted support and they are unable to help me because I have lost my receipt. Now the harddrive is being recovered by a third party at a cost of $3,500. RAID sounds like a good idea except it's very hard to recover the data if the drive fails. Even if you get two drives. Note that I rarely moved my two drives around. Stay away from RAID, and always back up your backup if possible.

This LaCie 550 GB external drive is junk. I have lost important data and Windows has consistently had problems recognizing the drive even with all of LaCie'S latest downloads and drivers. If you enjoy the emotion of throwing you computer hardware off a tall building this drive is for you. Don't waste your money on this manufacturer.

Warning: After upgrading to Mac 0S to 10.4.6, both my Lacie 250 GB drives failed to mount. System profiler and Disk Utilities show both the drives--after fixing permissions and running disk fix utility, the problem still would not go away. I called Lacie Support and they told me that the drives needed to be reformatted. Since I couldn't afford to lose ANY data, that was not an option. The drives did have the latest firmware. I looked through some online forums: 1. Other people did have this issue but apparently if you disconnect the drives from the Mac BEFORE updating the OS, there shouldn't be a problem. If I were you I still would not want to try that. 2. Some said try connecting using USB2. It didn't work for me.I later figured that it was the OS upgrade that was causing the problems. I had the luxury to connect the drives to OS 9 machine. Luckily, the drives mounted fine. I also tested on the OS 10.3 system and it was fine. So, I had to back up the data to another computer and reformat the drives on OS 10.4.6.So, if you run into the same problem, find a computer with previous version Mac OS (apparently Windows XP works) to hook up the drives.I've been using Lacies for many years. I like the price. Out of 7 Lacie drives I own, 1 failed (died) and then these 2, 250GB drives won't mount after installing Mac OS 10.4.6. It IS kind of risky to have problems like these. I may get another brand of external HD next time.

Having had a D2-60GB for four years and still counting, decided to add the D2-160Gb as a second storage and back-up device for my iMac. Easy to set up - hooked up the included power and FW400 cables, booted up the iMac and voila!-instant recognition. Partitioned the disc into two volumes to keep operating system and audio/video files separated and began transfer of data from the iMac to the D2-160GB. No problems whatsoever- unit runs very quietly with occasional muted clicking noises when reading/writing... very unobjectionable. And in the stand-up position, disc saves on desk space. All in all, a great product that gives great satisfaction and security.

Initially, I posted this review, "If you like "Windows Delayed Write - Failed" messages, this drive is for you."Granted, these messages were initially a problem, but they seem to have disappeared. I have one plugged into a USB port and 2nd unit plugged into the firewire port. (The 3rd is in a safety deposit box off site)Subdirectories now sync without incident. Since the problem went away on it's own - Lacie has NO SUPPORT to speak of - I don't know who to credit. Perhaps a Windows update fixed the problem; Who knows? Now that they work, I like having a couple of 500GB drives available to back up my 350GB+ of .avi files. I'd up my rating to 3 stars if permitted to do so by the Amazon site.My original review follows:I've got three of these drives and all of them get this message, after which the device drops from view on the PC. I've tried connecting via fire wire and USB 2 and the problem occurs with either. After a reboot, the drive magically reappears and all files copied prior to the occurance of the "Windows Delayed Write - Failed" message are available on the Lacie. Writing back to the hard disk from the Lacies hasn't yet been a problem. Still, If you do frequent large backups, these drives are not for you. You spend way too much time babysitting the back up process.I never get these messages when I back up to my Western DIgital 120GB USB external drives.I wouldn't buy another Lacie product until someone at Lacie or Microsoft comes up with an explanation and solution. So far neither company offers either. My most recently acquired drive gets these messages virtually every time I write to it. This one is still on warranty and I fully intend to return it for a refund. I'll try a competitor's product next.CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!

I have a iTB Lacie. It has not failed yet, but sometimes it just does not connect to my Mac, for weeks at a time. All the previous Lacie drives I have owned (three) have failed after a short time. I bought this drive after a two year moratorium on buying Lacie, to give them a chance. This drive is not significantly more reliable than my previous Lacie purchases. I feel I have wasted my money and I feel that Lacie produces inferior drives and cares nothing about its customers' data.

There are 4 problems that may not be major but irritated me: 1) USB cord is too short - 2 feet. I had to buy an extension. 2) On-Off button hard too find, very inconspicuous and depressed. Must use fingernail to touch.3)Uses a SAMSUNG driver which causes it to take on a SAMSUNG peripheral ID in WIN XP. 4) Backup software as provided on CD doesn't work at all. One must go to LaCie web-site to download and install a correct version.Otherwise drive works well.
