I use a MacBook Pro and the LaCie worked like a dream out of the box. Editing directly off the drive in Final Cut Pro is seamless. I recommend to anyone looking for one or two extra storage units. Portability is simple and easy.

LaCie is obviously well known for Mac users. Transfers are flawless and fast. Perfect for backing up my design work, my music, my movies, everything. Very sturdy and built to last. The size fits perfect anywhere.

Initially, I posted this review, "If you like "Windows Delayed Write - Failed" messages, this drive is for you."Granted, these messages were initially a problem, but they seem to have disappeared. I have one plugged into a USB port and 2nd unit plugged into the firewire port. (The 3rd is in a safety deposit box off site)Subdirectories now sync without incident. Since the problem went away on it's own - Lacie has NO SUPPORT to speak of - I don't know who to credit. Perhaps a Windows update fixed the problem; Who knows?Now that they work, I like having a couple of 500GB drives available to back up my 350GB+ of .avi files. I'd up my rating to 3 stars if permitted to do so by the Amazon site.My original review follows:I've got three of these drives and all of them get this message, after which the device drops from view on the PC. I've tried connecting via fire wire and USB 2 and the problem occurs with either. After a reboot, the drive magically reappears and all files copied prior to the occurance of the "Windows Delayed Write - Failed" message are available on the Lacie. Writing back to the hard disk from the Lacies hasn't yet been a problem. Still, If you do frequent large backups, these drives are not for you. You spend way too much time babysitting the back up process.I never get these messages when I back up to my Western DIgital 120GB USB external drives.I wouldn't buy another Lacie product until someone at Lacie or Microsoft comes up with an explanation and solution. So far neither company offers either.My most recently acquired drive gets these messages virtually every time I write to it. This one is still on warranty and I fully intend to return it for a refund. I'll try a competitor's product next.CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!!

I have a iTB Lacie. It has not failed yet, but sometimes it just does not connect to my Mac, for weeks at a time. All the previous Lacie drives I have owned (three) have failed after a short time. I bought this drive after a two year moratorium on buying Lacie, to give them a chance. This drive is not significantly more reliable than my previous Lacie purchases. I feel I have wasted my money and I feel that Lacie produces inferior drives and cares nothing about its customers' data.

There are 4 problems that may not be major but irritated me: 1) USB cord is too short - 2 feet. I had to buy an extension. 2) On-Off button hard too find, very inconspicuous and depressed. Must use fingernail to touch.3)Uses a SAMSUNG driver which causes it to take on a SAMSUNG peripheral ID in WIN XP. 4) Backup software as provided on CD doesn't work at all. One must go to LaCie web-site to download and install a correct version.Otherwise drive works well.

The LaCie d2 250GB external drive DIED less than 24 hours after I got it! I edit video on a Mac, and had loaded approximately 40GB of footage onto the new drive before shutting down for the night. The next morning when I turned everything back on, the LaCie d2 made a modest "click" sound and became a useless $200 paperweight.*edit*LaCie's tech support e-mailed me within about 6 hours to suggest a few things I could try, none of which worked. While no contact numbers for LaCie come with the actual product, I was able to find a customer service number via their website. I'm relieved to say I was connected right away with a human being, and the person I spoke to was really helpful in guiding me through their defective returns procedure. I was not charged for shipping the item back, nor was I responsible for insuring the package. I also should note, at no time did LaCie push me to exchange rather than refund my money. THAT is rare these days.*edit*The drive shipped quickly back to LaCie, and they refunded my money in exactly 7 business days. In fact, the only downside to the whole experience was the product itself.

I had a hard drive crash in november 06 and looked everywhere for back up options. After extensive research, I decided to stick with LaCie and this 1TB disk has lived up to my expectations. I've had it only for almost 2 months and has performed very well in terms of speed and reliability. Also, the vendor delivered what promised timely and accurately.

My 4th and final LaCie 250GB, just like this larger one, failed last week. None of them lasted over a year, and one was filled with video files that I had to pay $1,000 to retreive from a pro DATA retreival company! LaCie is simply NOT interested in working out the problems. Never again...Listen to so many of us here who have been burned. Just don't buy these things!

I've had this for about a month, and it's working fine so far.I partitioned it to use part as a backup drive for my Mac.Standard shipping from Amazon was very quick.

This was very, very easy to set up for my Mac PowerBook. However, I was surprised to find I need to plug it into the wall for power; I thought it would get the power it needed from the Firewire. Also, it is a bit heavy -- maybe that is good though as it seems very sturdy and secure.

I have the 80GB version of the LaCie Porsche Drive. I've used it for over a year, backing up about once a month. I've never had any problems with it. Nice design, easy to use, I recommend it.I've had no trouble with the LaCie brand - it hooked up easily via USB, was "plug and play" with XP, and you can drag files to it like a hard drive or use windows backup tool to create compressed backup files, and it hasn't failed on me.I didn't run it constantly, but it has been on for days at a time before and never generated any errors or other issues.For a low-cost 160GB drive, check out the Acomdata drive on several online sites, they are often offering a rebate.

I have always been told that Lacie is the professional grade choice for drives. It is not the case with this one. I bought it in May 06 and have had nothing but problems. I have already reformated it once. Now I get continual "Delay Write Failed" error messages. Not worth the money for an unreliable drive. This is a very expensive paper weight.STAY AWAY FROM THIS HUNK OF JUNK!

I am buying a second LaCie drive in an attempt to rescue documents that I thought would be safe on my original drive that has crashed after about 1.5 years. $160 for the second drive (which I intend to swap parts with in an effort to resurrect my data) is a much cheaper solution than spending two to ten times that amount to have my data professionaly rescued. (A service LaCie doesn't offer!) Please... read the forums before you buy this drive! Had I done so, I would not have come near this drive with a stick!

Some of the previous reviews state that there was a problem with the PC/Mac connecting to the external drive...I just dont see the problem. I bought this device in Aug '06 for my laptop and have yet to have a problem with it. It installed in a jiffy and I unplug the USB device and plug it back when I go mobile and still no issues. I think the people who are having these issues just arent reading the installation instructions that come with the device.

My drive FAIL after one year and a half...!!! This company really suck BIG TIME....I lost all of my data ...!!! ALL OFF IT...!!! THIS IS THE THIRD ONE THAT FAIL OUT OF FOUR OF THEM I PURCHASED LAST YEAR!!! Total JUNK...!!! NEVER buy a LACIE AGAIN FOR SURE....MAXTOR EXTERNAL IS THE BEST!!!

Sure it works, until the low grade drive they put in these fails or over heats because there is no air circulation in the cramped case.This drive failed after 90 days. Seagate did an RMA and even upgraded the drive for me.Seagate - 10LaCie - 0

Having had problems with a previous USB drive I bought the Lacie as a replacement having been brought under the impression that it was a superior quality (and therefore more expensive) than the previous drive.It has lasted one week and after hours on the phone to the manufacturer's support line no one has a clue what the fault is.This drive and it's support team are a complete waste of time and money.

I had to write this because of all the totally bad reviews. My experience has been the opposite, so just know that 1 user out ther has had a good experience!Mine is fast, quiet and reliable so far. What more can you ask of a drive.As with any drive, I say back everything up in duplicate or triplicate if it is important at all. I have 10 of these stacked and I use Retrospect to duplicate 1 set of 5 to the other set of 5. I have never lost data using this method.

Lacie makes good stuff. Their d2 line of drives is excellent looking with a hard metal look that though understated is elegant in a techno way. This hard drive matched their d2 DVD writers as well, with the same metal look and the blue light. Same power adapter too, so if somehow you lose one or one fails and you have the other....you're still in luck.Triple interface...yup, Firewire 400 (one port), 800 (two ports), and a USB 2.0 for those of you PC people :) Tried with the firewire 400...plugged in cable, plugged in power, and boom...160GB of storage on the desktop (formatted for Mac outta the box). Runs very cool, quiet too. Like most external drives today, has the option of being placed vertically with a sturdy stand. Will also fit into a rack if you so desire.The drive is smaller than some other externals I've seen...which for me is a good thing as desk space is at a premium. While it's only been 5 days with the product, I feel confident enough about it to give it two thumbs up.

I have 8 D2 Firewire drives hooked up. I do a lot of graphics and video work on my G5 and macbook pro. Wouldn't buy anything else.

I work at a design studio that bought about 10 of these drives over the past year or two. We we're seduced by the nice box design. They look great but they usually last about a year or less. We have lost more data due to LaCie equipment than anything else we own. I use one at home for music. I thought maybe the failure rate was due to multiple users, being passed around, overall misuse. Not the case unfortunately. Today, for the second time in three months, my LaCie 250gig external harddrive failed. This time it just died. No disc utility could repair it, just tick tick tick. It hasn't been moved, it is very well ventilated and very well taken care of. This disc sits on a shelf above my stereo and is used 3-4 evenings a week to listen to background music. Very light use. Seeing the same drives die frequently at work, I backed everything up to a 6 year old EzQuest drive that has never failed me. If I hadn't done this I would have lost around 200 gigs of music. In the past LaCie was known as the cheesy, cheap, bad alternative to other more expensive brands. Seems like the only thing they changed was their marketing. This is a low quality product / brand. Don't be seduced by the handsome box design, the reliability is terrible and the warranty is about half as long as other manufacturers... makes you wonder why.
