This drive died 8 months after I bought it - I lost all of my content - Lacie's suggestion "buy a 2nd drive!" yeah right - The drive was under warantee when it crashed - but now 6 months after the year warranty, the replacement drive has also crashed.DO NOT BUY THE LARGER 500 Gig Drives - the bridge between the drives WILL CRASH.I've gotten some reall good use out of their smaller model drives (knock on wood)BUT STEER CLEAR OF THIS BIG DRIVE.Oh and you know your drive is going to crash when the drive starts slowing down and takes 10 minutes just to open.

I am a videographer and have purchased 4 of these drives over time. I'm done with LaCie. Two failed after a year and the two remaining are failing now, clicking and clacking and regularly unmounting themselves. They look great! ... designed by a famous guy, but what's inside should last longer than a year!LaCie knows it, and didn't want to look at my failed drives at all. After all, they outlasted the warantee, and that was all that was needed for them.I ended up with some from Mercury (Elite Firewire 800 Pro). They are about the same price, don't look near as good, and work great!Respectfully submitted

Then simply stopped working. After some additional research LaCie has a reputation for unreliable drives (which I knew ahead of time having bought LaCie drive years ago and then stopped). Typical failure rates of 40+% in under a year. Buy drives from anybody else. Fortunately all I kept on this disk were system backups and I can simply start using another disk.

Both of my LaCie Big Disk Extremes have been returned to manufacturer within a year of purchase due to power issues. In each case I have lost time and valuable data (they reformat the drive after repair as stardard operating procedure). Lacie makes decent drives so this surprised me. Later models may have fixed the problem, but the LaCie Big Disk Extreme has issues.

I got this product because i needed extra storage to put my itunes on. my laptop hard drive is only 80G and it was almost full. i have a vast amount of cd's collected over the years which i have been transfering onto itunes.I found the product very easy to use. Simple plug and play. My laptop picked it up straight away. No problem.I now have all my photos, music and psp movie files on the external storage with loads of space to spare. my pc performance has improved and i am thinking about buying another one and using it on a home network i am setting up.10 out of 10. Well done LaCie. Love the design. Makes stacking easy.

I've been through two of these drives now. Neither were "plug and play" as a USB drive should be. I've swapped cables, tried different computers (three to be exact, on two different OS) and still neither drive worked. The first I returned, figuring it was simply a defective drive. When the replacement arrived and had the same problems, I contacted LaCie for support. The support I recieved appeared to be computer-generated based on key words. The first e-mail was generic despite my providing all details of the problem. It included what to do if the problem were with a CDR, for example. The second e-mail told me to do everything that I had just done. Each e-mail had a 3 day turn-around time so by the time of the second e-mail I was a week into trying to solve this problem. The only thing I can figure is that LaCie rushed to production and quality slipped. A USB drive should not be this difficult to install. In the time interval that has elapsed, I have purchased and installed two other USB external HDs on the same machines. This kind of work is something I do frequently at work so the problem is not a complete lack of experience on my part.

Was working ok for 1 year (well USB is slower then Firewire anyway) but then powersupply died. Opened case and found that Western Digital HD still works. Have to buy new enclosure and fix myself as repairing costs would be too high.

This is the third, and last LaCie drive I will ever own. My first one failed, and unfortunately I had already bought my two others before they also failed. In the end, all three drives that I bought from LaCie have failed. If you do decide to buy one, you might as well get two and use one for backup because it's only a matter of time, just read through some message boards.

I have read a few reviews that place this hard drive on the less than stellar list as far as external hard drives go. But, I have had it for over a week now. I left it on for two straight days...have yet to feel it get "hot". I have over 4 gigs of music so faron it......have yet to hear it "stall" with iTunes. It copies slow.....but I have a G3 operating OS X so nothing I can do about that. Also, it seems to sleep if I don't use it after awhile. And my G3 is louder than the hard drive. I have yet to hear it make noise. I think I got a good one out of the batch. Cheap....yes. Reliable.....we'll seeI will update in about 3 months.it's been more than three months and this drive is still kicking , love it andglad I bought it. No noise, no hassles just perfect.

Picked this drive up to have something to back-up my machine to. I'm using a G5 iMac and find that the LaCie drive is quieter than the mac (which says a lot). I've been using it for about a week now and have the following pros and cons:Pros:1. Quiet2. Small3. Fun colors and simple design4. Power button and power down when not in useCons:1. Shine on plastic casing shows scratches and dust easily2. Power brickNot sure if it's a con, but it took about 50 minutes to transfer about 60Gb of video to the drive.

As of right now, I am an Apple Student DeveloperMost of my work comes from Filmmaking, as I'm an Independent Filmmaker, and all of my post production work relies heavily upon my Apple G5 Tower, as well as a TON of external harddrive storageWhile some of my LaCie HD's have worked great, many of them have simply failed mehere are the pro's -1. great interface - both FireWire 400 and 800, and they are easy to daisychain2. they are fast - 7200 RPM, and usually, if the drive is good, the performance will showCONS -1. very weak body ---- forget if you drop this thing even one inch - it'll be dead2. very tough to hookup to other drives -- when I say this, I mean it is impossible to stack this drive, or try and put it in a space where it'll stay putTHE BIGGEST PROBLEM ---I don't know what accounts for this - whether its the bridge or the drive itself - but LaCie's drives fail way too muchI've probably purchased around 14 LaCie drives in the past 4 years, for varioius film projects and associate ones ----- of the 14, I have had 5 completely fail on meThis is simply unacceptable for any drive companywhen you consider it all, companies like MAXTOR offer drives with the same interface, same speeds, but at a lower pricewith that said, take a look at MAXTOR, whose drives are housed in a very indestructive body (...)On a sidenote, LaCie has honored the warranties on their drives, and when they're open, their customer service is very helpful --- but I've lost too much data, at this point, to recommend them

This review is concerning 5 (not 1 , but 5 LaCie 500Gb drives) that we purchased for our office, and every single one of them failed. I had called in the first drive that failed, and was actually able to send it in to LaCie. They returned it to me saying that they couldn't reproduce the problem. 3 days later, 2 more of the drives failed in the same way. the drives would make a clicking sound, would have tons of windows delay write failed errors. a few days later, the rest of drives failed, and eventually stopped being recognized by our computers completely, so we decided to just open up the cases and use the drives individually (they are setup in some sort of serial connection to hook up two 250Gb drives, so we bought seperate USB enclosures for the working drive and used them one at a time, and tossed the bad drive.Whatever the case may be, I think having 5 drives fail the same way tells me that this is very bad product. for $500 ... I think I would question the value for sure! do not buy this... you've been warned.

This item is easy to use once you get it installed, which takes high level PC knowledge. Not at all plug and play for PCs, but maybe MACs. Had to install software supplied and reconfigure PC.Subsequently, we purchased a Seagate 300GB, which was immediately plug and play easy. Never had to install software supplied.

Normally I dont care to write reviews, however this one is a must.My Lacie 500GIG HD contained 100% of my music, pictures, movies, personal files and so on. (Copied all my cd's to it and threw away the cd's afterwards) I also have a second Lacie 500GIG HD that I planned on backing all of that up.Click .. bzzzzz .. click .. bzzzzz. The first time that I dont keep two copies of my files and they're gone for good, but thats my fault.I've only owned it for 4 months. It will get a simular treatment as the printer in "Office Space".Don't buy this thing.

This disk only lasted about 15 months for me. I was using it to store my large I-tunes music library, and would write to it periodically as I accrued my library of CD's. The warranty on this drive is 1 year, and they really mean it! I would not recomend this drive due to its short lifespan. Thanks!

I use this to back up files and applications off our old(er) eMac G4 800 MHz, circa 2003. Have had the LaCie for five months and it works like a charm. The included Silver Keeper software simplifies daily backup chores. The drive came in handy when the eMac's hard drive had to be replaced. Got a new hard drive (free via warranty), dragged our files from the LaCie to the eMac, and it was like we had our old computer back again. Saved our entire iTunes folder, digital photos and many, many other files. Quick and easy.

I have owned a Lacie 160GB USB external hard drive for over one year with no problems. I just bought a Lacie 250 Brick USB external drive which is also working great. I formatted both drives to NTFS and have filled both drives almost to capacity with video - stored MPEG file backups. I have Windows XP with SP 1 on my PC. I do not leave the drives turned on or plugged in, except when making backups to the drives, about once a month. As such, the drives do not get overly hot.Based on everything I've read about these drives, I've been cautious about using them. I have only used them as backups of video that I have stored on my PC's hard drive or on DVD. These drives might not work with future editions of Windows, who knows, but for now they are a reasonably priced and convenient backup storage option for my video files.

I haven't experience any of the issues the others have. I've had 3 250 GB LaCie d2 drives and they've all been great. I use them heavily for video editing and pushing 10-20 GB files. No problems. The only issue I ever had was with an old Mac and the 500 GB LaCie drive ... probably a FireWire issue. I've had much better luck with LaCie than Mercury. One note of caution for people who have had issues: software upgrades and firmware issues are very common, especially with Firewire, and I've gotten into the habit of always shutting down before adding a drive and unmounting a drive before removing it, even though Firewire is hot-swappable, I've had external FW devices blow up trying to hot-swap.I'm a fan of LaCie. It could look like a baked potato and I'd still use it.

Plug and Play? no problem.Reliable? so far, so good (had it for 2 months and use it only occasionally for back up.)Sturdy? seems to be; I dropped it on the garage floor and dented the corner of the case, but it still runs like a champ.Capacity? 160GB is more than I dreamed. I've thrown everything I've got at it and managed to use only 20% of its capacity.Gripes? the drive vibrates slightly (don't know if that's normal or not.)Would I buy it again? Absolutely. I haven't experienced any of what the others have observed.
