This disk only lasted about 15 months for me. I was using it to store my large I-tunes music library, and would write to it periodically as I accrued my library of CD's. The warranty on this drive is 1 year, and they really mean it! I would not recomend this drive due to its short lifespan. Thanks!

I use this to back up files and applications off our old(er) eMac G4 800 MHz, circa 2003. Have had the LaCie for five months and it works like a charm. The included Silver Keeper software simplifies daily backup chores.The drive came in handy when the eMac's hard drive had to be replaced. Got a new hard drive (free via warranty), dragged our files from the LaCie to the eMac, and it was like we had our old computer back again. Saved our entire iTunes folder, digital photos and many, many other files. Quick and easy.

I have owned a Lacie 160GB USB external hard drive for over one year with no problems. I just bought a Lacie 250 Brick USB external drive which is also working great. I formatted both drives to NTFS and have filled both drives almost to capacity with video - stored MPEG file backups. I have Windows XP with SP 1 on my PC. I do not leave the drives turned on or plugged in, except when making backups to the drives, about once a month. As such, the drives do not get overly hot.Based on everything I've read about these drives, I've been cautious about using them. I have only used them as backups of video that I have stored on my PC's hard drive or on DVD. These drives might not work with future editions of Windows, who knows, but for now they are a reasonably priced and convenient backup storage option for my video files.

I haven't experience any of the issues the others have. I've had 3 250 GB LaCie d2 drives and they've all been great. I use them heavily for video editing and pushing 10-20 GB files. No problems.The only issue I ever had was with an old Mac and the 500 GB LaCie drive ... probably a FireWire issue. I've had much better luck with LaCie than Mercury. One note of caution for people who have had issues: software upgrades and firmware issues are very common, especially with Firewire, and I've gotten into the habit of always shutting down before adding a drive and unmounting a drive before removing it, even though Firewire is hot-swappable, I've had external FW devices blow up trying to hot-swap.I'm a fan of LaCie. It could look like a baked potato and I'd still use it.

Plug and Play? no problem.Reliable? so far, so good (had it for 2 months and use it only occasionally for back up.)Sturdy? seems to be; I dropped it on the garage floor and dented the corner of the case, but it still runs like a champ.Capacity? 160GB is more than I dreamed. I've thrown everything I've got at it and managed to use only 20% of its capacity.Gripes? the drive vibrates slightly (don't know if that's normal or not.)Would I buy it again? Absolutely. I haven't experienced any of what the others have observed.

This drive is easy to use, but has high failure rate. We use about 40 LaCie Firewire drives year round and have about 10% failure rate. We recovered 100% data from more than 90% of the "dead" drives. It doesn't make any sense if LaCie told you that they can't recover the data. Let us know if you need help to recover your data.

I've just had one of these drives fail after about 1 year. What's the point in buying one to back up your data to when they're more likely to fail than the drive in your computer?Buy a different type / brand instead. This drive isn't even worth one star

I just bought this drive the other day and im pretty happy with it. Now that im doing some University work i need make sure that my computer will be operating at its peak. I cant afford to lose any of my work or spend hours trying to fix the damn thing. So i bought this drive and backed up my whole computer using XP's backup function. The only setup that needed to be done is that i had to format the drive to NTFS because it came formatted in FAT32..FAT32 can only support 4Gb maximum file sizes and this is useless for back up purposes. After that was done, i started the backup and 4 hours later (i have an old 1ghz celeron computer) it was all done. I like to think of it as an insurance policy..makes me feel a lot better. The best thing about this drive though is the look..the other drives in the store looked way too nerdy and plasticky..oh did i mention the price? It was $70AUD cheaper than its rival! A lot of other supposed "owners" here dumped on this product (These are probably the same kind who broke their Ipod 1 week after they bought it) but dont listen to them! As long as your gonna use this drive for backup or normal use (not abuse) you will find it fantastic!

Worked great initially. Fast, easy to hook up.Losing 20 Gigs of data on a dead drive within 3 weeks of purchase was not so much fun.If you like gambling and don't mind losing your data, this might be the drive for you.Otherwise, look to a more reliable name.

I have two of these guys, one for backups, the other my "briefcase" (going back and forth between work and home every day). Not a single problem, plug and go (I am using the FireWire interface), and silent. My boss got one on my recommendation, after ditching another brand, and loves it too.

I had a 500Gig crash on me within a year. I bought this 250 as a replacement. Out of the box it was unfunctional and made the weirdest sounds I've ever heard. I sent it to Lacie and they sent it back to me no different. I'm not using Lacie anymore - too much is at stake. I loved the way they looked and stacked but I'm WAY OVER it. Lacie no more.

I bought a 250gb LaCie d2, not through Amazon, but through another retailer. I spent several months ripping my music collection. Now after less than 1 year of ownship, it refuses to mount on my Mac. 3 interfaces are not much use, when none of them work.I'm stuck with an expensive hunk of metal and no way to get at my digital music.I've looked around the web and it turns out this is a fairly common problem with this brand. There has got to be a more reliable hard drive out there, keep looking.UPDATE: To be fair I should post an update that I sent the drive back to LaCie (at my expense), they fixed it and sent it back to me (at their expense). It has been trouble-free for 3 months now. When it's working, it's a 5-star product.

This Lacie 160GB hard drive is simple to use. It runs quiet and very happy with my purchase. I use it with my laptop. I just put it out of the way when I don`t need it. The only thing that could be improved is the length of the cord from the hard drive to my computer.

Our 5th LaCie drive (d2 Extreme) and they are all still going strong. The triple interface means you can plug and play almost anywhere. Solid build and decent speed for most applications and they supply all the interface cables you might need. (unlike certain printer manufacturers...)

As soon as I hooked up this drive, my computer recognized it and within seconds, it was ready to store files to. very small footprint, quiet and compact - you don't know it is there. I am very pleased!

Amazon delivered the goods right on time and the goods are good. I have been using the LaCie drive for some HD video editing and it has yet to crash or malfunction which is superb.P.S I wish amazon would have made it availible in Canada.

I've never taken the time to write a review, but since I've given this thing so much of a chance to prove itself that now I can't return it, the least I can do is try to save someone else some grief.Like all the other reviews...it work wells for a day or so. Then it starts unmounting during file transfers. It skips when playing songs off it with iTunes. Some files even vanished and then reappeared days later! All this happens during the rare times I am able to get the thing to actually mount. Hopefully I'll get one more mount out of it so i can transfer my data when I buy my next non-LaCie external hard drive!DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE!!!

I purchased this device thru Amazon. After 13 months of good service, the disk failed. LaCie service quotes: "Unfortunately, the drive is past its one-year warranty and we are unable to repair it. We do not perform out-of-warranty repairs. It is usuallymore cost effective to purchase a new unit."$500 for 13 months suggests questionable value.A company not offering out-of-service repair work is also concerning.

I have three LaaCie external hard drives. Use them for video storage.bought a new 200 GB drive to store mini DV videos. disk crashed shortly after I put 140 GB on the disk. less than one month after buying it.

This is a lousy, lousy hard drive and unfortunately I bought two of them - BAD PURCHASE. BAD.It will not connect to a wide variety of systems without reboot, retry different USB ports, and sometimes never. DON'T BUY.On one computer I will attempt a copy and suddenly the entire computer will reboot. DON'T BUY.This is a bad product and I have learned my lesson.

I've never experienced the former reviewers unfortunate issues with this LaCie Drive. I've owned one of these for two years, and Im a heavy user - 10 hours a day. I edit lots of video and have 30GB of music on here that I play throughout each day using I Tunes. never a glitch, never a problem. I've used SeaGate external drives and those are great too, but I have had a few problems with those. Im so far a big LaCie fan and Im buying another one soon.

Our school has 100 of the LaCie P3 under XP. We never had a problem. It works with old and new computers. The kids love the cool design and don't brake the hard drives. It is an excellent investment.

Lacie has a real quality control issue on their hands. The disk worked for a week but failed just as David Sawyers' review mentions. Lacie technical support was gracious enough to send me a new drive (this was after they attempted to fix my original drive).The new disk, like the old one, worked for a week and then failed again. Now I have an ugly plastic paperweight and am short quite a lot of shipping money.It seems like there are some people who are quite happy with their drives but the question is, are you willing to bet your money on buying a subpar disk that has a high probability of failing?
