I've had a LaCie Big Disk Extreme for about 4 years now. For the first 2 years it was fine, then it started losing connectivity and shutting off. LaCie said it was a power supply problem (which I read about online as well, it's been a problem with this model) and replaced the power supply for free as a "one time courtesy". Six months later it started making strange sounds and losing connectivity regularly again. Customer service said it sounded like a power supply issue again, and would not replace the power supply for free again b/c I already got my "courtesy" free one. I bought a new one, and it didn't fix the problem. I haven't lost data yet, but I bought a new Western Digital drive and transferred everything to be safe. I no longer trust LaCie, and you shouldn't either. Backup drives are too important to have regular failures.

This is my second LaCie 500GB drive. No problems. This drive does not have an on/off button, which I didn't notice when I ordered it. I've recommended this drive to everyone in my office.

I own four Lacie external hard drives (three 500 GB and one 250 GB). Before you put one or more of these drives in your shopping cart, I suggest you consider the following 1) What is really inside this shiny case? I took a similar drive (the D2 Big Disk Triple Interface) apart when it failed after three years and inside were two 250 GB Western Digital desktop drives. I found out from some tech experts that WD drives are less reliable than some brands (such as top-rated Seagate and Hitachi) because they draw more current which can fry the rather weak bridges made by Lacie. Bridge failure was what happened to my drive. 2) What is the warranty period for this drive? Lacie's warranty period is only one year, while other more reliable drives (again Seagate and Hitachi) have warranties up to five years. Warranties are obviously important, especially for hard drives, and these other manufacturers stand by their products. 3) What sort of support does Lacie give if the drive fails when it is out of warranty? When my drive failed (after only three years of light use), I tested the two WD hard drives inside and they were OK. So I called Lacie to see if the bridge (inside the Lacie case) could be repaired or replaced. They told me that they offered no out-of-warranty service or repairs for any of their hard drives (at any price). They even suggest that I look for replacement parts on eBay! So if it fails, and it's out of warranty, you're out of luck! I now see Lacie as more of a hard drive packager than a hard drive manufacturer, and their support is abysmal. I'll never buy another Lacie drive.

Worked perfectly undisturbed in my workstation for a few months until it started failing transfers, and ultimately becoming completely unreadable. Was horrified to find out common experiences from other people online. Stay away from this item-- better yet from this manufacturer.

This is perfect for my needs. Very simple "auto" set up - works elegantly with my new iMac and Time Machine. Comes with all cables you may choose to use. A very good value.

I had this drive for about 6 months. Should have looked online for reviews before purchasing. It eventually started the death click. This drive is plagued by heat issues. I did not leave the drive running all the time. This is just not a safe buy.

My second Lacie purchase and it did not disappoint. Very solidly built and quite fast. It runs a little hot but no worries. Halve the price of similar drives and all the qualities.

I liked my Big Disk Exterme with its three interfaces (USB 2.0, Firewire 400 & 800) for its speed. I was slightly annoyed by the constant noise it generated when running. After a few minutes of inactivity, the drive spins down. When idle, it needs about 15 seconds to spin up again.After 11 months of light home use, one of both disks inside (Hitachi Deskstar HDT725050VLAT80) stopped spinning up, rendering the device useless.If you ever notice an interrupt in its spin-up sound, do not switch it off. Connect another hard disk and copy over as much as possible. After I first noticed the irregular spin-up sound, the drive died within three days.

Hooks up easily. Works. Runs fairly quietly. File system easily changed from FAT32 to NTFS. Couldn't ask for more for the money.

After having to send this back twice on my dime to LaCie because it simply will not back up (prepares and prepares and never backs up) here I have it again a third time in one year. Service has been awful, and as much as I wish this had worked, it did not. I also resent the fact that I have had to pay shipping twice to get service that does not hold up. Never buying LaCie again.

I've owned this for nearly two years. It reads and writes fast, and I have never had a problem accessing files. I bought it because it was the cheapest one available, about 100 dollars when I bought it. The only problem I have had is, the power cord just "sits" in the plug. It is loose, and if tugged a little it will fall out. However, if it's sitting on a desk there is no problems.I liked this hard drive and I will stick with Lacie in the future for externals. For the sheer value.Instead of buying this, go for the 500GB version. It's the same physical size and can be found for a low as 90 dollars on a site like ecost.

It failed with in a month and a half. I didn't have a chance to back up the last 2 photoshoots and travel images I took and lost them. LaCie tells me it's my fault for not backing everything up. What's the point of their product then if they say it's going to fail anyway!? They include a disk in the box that says "data recovery" on it, then when you try to use it there is nothing about data recovery! Then they refer you to Drive Savers and it costs $4000.00 for data recovery!! I can't get by money back. So now they are going to "repair" it and send me the same bad product that I don't trust. I have no recourse.DON'T BUY LACIE!!

Exactly as advertised, extremely quite, works flawlessly with Leopard Time Machine. Highly recommend as a secondary drive for backup. Agree with other reviews, a switched power supply would be a nice added feature.

read reviews +/- for LaCie products for MAC. I agree whirls and thumps when starting up but at 1 month no problems. I've got it running time machine. Saved $$$ by selecting the black box. Does require A/C plug-in (included). Seems good value at the moment.

I got this product a few days ago- looks decent- works rather fast- gets a bit hot after many hours of working, but not too bad- no off switch, so you have to unplugI am really satisfied personally

Great price, very reliable...I use this to back up my archival stores, many of which are the same brand 120 gig and 160 gig drives...Then I turn off and store the older drives, using them as a final backup...Have only had one LaCie problem in 6 years, and that drive was bad from the start, so nothing was lost.And, oh by the way, I have TWELVE of these chained together, so it makes it easy for me to have them on line all of the time.

This only thing that bother me with this hard drive is that there is no switch button, so it has to be plugged in before connecting it to the computer via an usb port. If not, the computer will not recognize the device and you will have to unplug and plug the hard drive again to the electric plug...

I ordered this device for my wife since she takes a large number of digital pictures as well as download a lot of music (legally, of course). The hard drive has performed flawlessly. It was well worth the purchase price & has been a great help with the storage of the pictures and music. The device can be left on for hours & there is no issue of it overheating.

I had this drive for a year, and it worked great. had all my files on. Used it as a backup for my laptop, and to hold all my pictures, musics, and DVD backups. It did a great job. up until it died. No warning. I plugged it in one day and I hear this clicking noises. I open it up (Voided the warrenty, if it was still under) and took out the HD and tried it in my tower. No luck. Lost my whole movie collection. Inside it was a seagate barracuda IDE drive.This is a good drive BUT DO NOT COUNT ON IT. and, most importantly, it is not a mobile drive. I'm guessing moving it around to much did it in.I'm buying a LeCie All terrain to replace it.

Nice little drive. Speed seems on par with other USB drives I've used, but this is the quietest. It is virtually silent. The only thing lacking is an on/off switch (minus 1 star). No problems during the first month of use.

It looks as tough as a tank, but it isn't. Once it crashed eveyone told me it's a very delicate piece of equipment. I did not carry mine around, for one, it is too heavy. I also only fired it up when I did my monthly backups, so I didn't have it running all the time, so it shouldn't have over heated as others have mentioned. But after less than 11 months, the computer stopped recognizing it---it hums but never gets anywhere. I changed the ports, bought new cables, all to no avail. As it happens, my computer had failed and I was relying on the LaCie back up drive to retrieve my files--what a shock when I couldn't get to them. Tried other computers, both MACs and PCs, and still no sightings of the LaCie drive on the desktop.Even though still under warranty, I got NO HELP from the LaCie help desk. Their suggestions to use a data recovery application is unhelpful since I couldn't see the drive to select it. They don't even give you a toll free number to call. They also expect you to pay to ship the heavy thing to them even under warranty. They give NO HELP to retrieve data. If you allow anyone to open the case it voids the warranty, but they won't send you the hard drive separately, even if you send them the item intact and it turns out that it's something else.Head aches, head aches....if it worked, it would be great, but it's not the drive that is important, it is the data and if Lacie hasn't figured out a way to help clients when their products fail, they shouldn't be in this business.buyer beware! I wouldn't buy another LaCie ever again. Also learned my lesson, two copies are still not enough, especially if one of them is LaCie.
