Be aware that eSATA does not work with Windows 7. This is a known issue as confirmed by LaCie Technical support. According to them this issue is "not limited to LaCie drives" That is a lie as I have two Iomega and one Seagate eSATA drives and have not had any problems. That is the usual tech support answer, when they cannot come up with a solution: that the problem is caused by someone or something else, not our product. Do not buy from LaCie.

This hard drive has a great amount of space to put all my video projects onto. It has a fast speed and is used really well to transfer things from my computer to other computers. I am able to store a large amount of projects and different things on it.

Pre-Ivy Bridge MBPs require the LaCie USB 3.0 ExpressCard/34 to attach LaCie devices using USB 3.0, and for this setup mounting typically requires a restart. When connected using slow USB 2.0 the drive, when idle, spontaneously disconnects and reconnects. Likely a strong performer _with_ Ivy Bridge-based Macs.

This external Hard drive is great, it was a little difficult to set up, considering it is partitioned into to separate drives, and I had to format the second drive myself, which took almost a whole 24hours from my PC. But after it was all said and done, it is extremely fast, and It has been working flawlessly. Will be buying LaCie more often.

Purchased this for my husband who was constantly looking at external hard drives at Costco, mainly for the purpose of keeping our years worth of photos safe. The reviews of the Lacie and the compact portable size of the Minimus sold me. I wouldn't know how he got it to work correctly, but it works perfectly and does what it should. Transfering our photos is quick, easy and quiet. He's happy with it, so it was a great purchase all around.

Purchased this for my husband who was constantly looking at external hard drives at Costco, mainly for the purpose of keeping our years worth of photos safe. The reviews of the Lacie and the compact portable size of the Minimus sold me. I wouldn't know how he got it to work correctly, but it works perfectly and does what it should. Transfering our photos is quick, easy and quiet. He's happy with it, so it was a great purchase all around.

Last Christmas I bought a NAS device. Netgear ReadyNas Duo. What a nightmare that was. They make great wireless routers but no so much on storage. Just way too difficul to work with. Have been living without for months now but my laptop recently started running out of hard disk space so had to get a backup solution.Bought a WD Essential a few nights ago but didn't like the UI. Just kludgy. Swapped that out for the WDBookLive and that was even worse not to mention slow.Bought the LaCie tonight and what a dream. Setup was a breeze, UI is intuitive, speed is great, aesthetic appeal can't be beat (feels like a solid piece of alumninum - kinda like a MacBook).Absolutely love it! Am going to try to see if I can hook it up to my WNDR3750 Wireless Router and access it from there and perform backups wirelessly. Probably not, but we will see.

Freezes when attempting to add files, freezes when attempting to partition, either as simple partition or by zeroing out the drive. Makes a loud, constant burring sound with vibrations.This is after only 60 days of use.LaCie support is frustrating, only via e-mail, asking to perform diagnostic functions I already told them I had done.This drive is not dependable and support is lacking.When I had Seagate and Western Digital drives fail, service was prompt, a drive was dispatched overnight with return labels for the defective unit.LaCie is just jerking me around hoping I loose interest and not bother.Well, I lost interest alright. I lost interest In ever buying or ever recommending LaCie products ever again.Update: It took LaCie 3 days of online back and worth, asking again and again to try this & that when all the information was in the original posting. Yes I tried a different computer, yes I tried a different cable, no it will not reformat, yes it shows up in disk utility. Now after 3 days they graciously permitted me to ship back the drive at my expense for them to repair it. What do I use while they repair this failure of theirs?I'm out of a device that I rely upon for conducting business. They don't you have an advance replacement program with a secure deposit or something? When it comes down to it, the actual (cheap) Samsung mechanism in their (cheap) enclosure is probably costing them about $15-20 in bulk. Add the cost of the enclosure, mass produced for about $2. Why don't they have an advance replacement program where the customer leaves a deposit, say $25, to be refunded when the failure is returned in the pre-paid packaging? Minimum downtime for the customer, happier customers means loyal customers. Loyal customer buy more of LaCie products in the future.I guess we know where LaCie stands when it comes to reliability and dependability. No wonder my IT department steers clear of anything LaCie.

LIGHT!The 320gb lacie drive hit the spot and was just the boost i needed, its got all the properties above and looks great doing it. The USB boost driver thats available really does help. I really dont know how someone here said this thing isn't fast, they must have gotten a anomaly or are not using the included drivers. cuz this thing blows away every other external usb drive ive used so far.Heres two tips.If you got a DELL Latitude heres a little tip, the drive is actually the exact size of the optical drive bay door. So you can literally rest the drive on top of the CD platform while you are using it. The drive will also fit nicely in the side pocket of the case for the targus universal APM69US or APA69US adapters.TRULY HELPFUL!It doesn't really play well in linux but most kernels are now being updated to support the new file systems that are coming out.I'd also recommend picking up a Y-Cable even if you are still using USB2 as a connection, the cable will come in handy in the future.More than worth the 50 i dropped on it. If you are looking for a compact USB2.0 drive this thing has looks and brains!

UPDATE August 12, 2010:My original drive connected to my Apple Airport Extreme access point, continues to function flawlessly with my MacBookPro and Time Machine. I've had to use the backup to restore items multiple times and they are all there, easy to find, and even easier to restore. I bought a 2nd identical unit for a new Windows7 Dell desktop in May. I formatted this with NTFS and directly connected it to the desktop using native Windows7 backup routines. Again, so far this has been flawless. I just purchased my 3rd identical 1TB LaCie drive as a dedicated backup drive for a work laptop, again to be formatted for Windows but this time for XP SP3. I expect the same excellent and transparent service. I guess I need to be thinking about network storage at some point soon.ORIGINAL REVIEW: April 3, 2010:I wanted a LAN backup device for my home network, one that attaches to my Apple Airport Extreme base station. The station is actually a repeater for a part of my home not covered well by the AT&T U-verse wireless router that covers the rest of the house. I originally intended to use the device for both my MacBookPro and the several PC (Windows XP) machines I have. In trying to configure that scenario, I called LaCie technical support and spent about 20 minutes in a friendly and very fruitful discussion of how to do that, ultimately taking their recommendation and just setting up the drive for the MacBook for reasons of better security, avoidance of two or more partitions on the LaCie drive, and frankly little need to back up my Wintel machines as all of my important software and data are now on the MacBook.All of that said, the LaCie 1TB drive has been in use now for about 3 months with Time Machine performing all of the backup tasks to it. The good news: everything appears to be working perfectly. The even better news: one of my email accounts got seriously corrupted one day at the provider's server end, wiping out all messages. The provider was able to restore my messages properly but it took almost 2-1/2 days to do so. Using Time Machine, I was able to restore my local copy of all email messages easily, completely, and without errors from the LaCie drive...and in under an hour.I have not had the device long enough to experience the power supply problems others note, and so far the LaCie drive has worked flawlessly. It is located next to my access point in a closet, so I don't see or hear it do its magic. Lastly, although I selected this drive because it supports FireWire 800 and other connections including all needed connection cables, my drive is connected with the USB cable. This is because the Apple base station has only Ethernet and USB connections.

bought this product based on friend's recommendation.....FAILED AFTER JUST 4 MONTHS of LIGHT USE.saved many photos and family videos on the harddrive thinking it will be a good backup. One day, just failed to boot up, machine made some funny noices and within few minutes, DIED. Thank goodness I have a secondary backup with Western Digitial harddrive. Absolutely will not recommend. Look at my previous reviews, I almost never give a one star rating. $150 down the drain. Company refuse to honor warranty, say it is outside the 90 day window. Just horrible!

Lacie Sucks I purchased 5 units for my company 4 years ago and 2 of the devices had repeated problems during the years and 1 system board recently failed.. Contacted Lacie to get it fixed... they said we stand behind our quality of hardware but since your warranty expired - YOUR SCREWED!!! No repair options - even paid for - no parts... Lacie is very strict with its vendors to insure you remain screwed by not allowing them to sell replacement parts.. Im so upset about this that I am thinking about suing..

My company bought an older 3TB version several months ago. One of the two drives failed within a week. It was sent back to the manufacturer for repair (I had to pay for the round-trip postage). The device came back, and became broken within a few days. So it was sent back for repair (again I had to pay for the round-trip postage). To my amazement, the "repaired" drive did not function when it was shipped back. Finally, the manufacturer was kind enough to send me a replacement. Since it no longer makes the 3TB version, I was sent this 4TB version (I had to pay for both the return shipping of the 3TB defective product, and for the shipping of the 4TB one). It was a complete shock that the 4TB drive arrive DEFECTIVE on the spot!!! My company has experienced tech support, and everyone is shocked at such poor quality, for the multiple units we received. We gave up contacting the company for repair or replacement due to the cost of shipping and the unsatisfactory outcome.DO NOT BUY this product if you have critical data to back up.

I plugged this into my macbook pro and it didn't start, called support and they said I need a USB Y-cable as well, but that would mean both of my USB ports on this laptop would be taken up by this (oh and they're on opposite sides of the computer so I would need to buy a USB extension to plug it in). Not sure for what other laptops this problems holds but if you have a Macbook Pro from the 2008 era, one USB port will not be enough to power it up.

This is the third LaCie external drive I've purchased. I've been using eSATA connections and been very pleased with both the speed and reliability. I use the 6TB drive for an external system backup, and a second 2TB for additional file storage. I very much like the RAID options. These drives have performed very well for me, and I highly recommend them.

Awesome build quality, and very rugged design. Easy to install and use. Excellent read and write speeds. Very compact and portable. Works perfectly so far, silent and stays cool. All in all, great value for money!
