We are on our second HD... first one broke after a few months... this replacement they sent us (after many phone calls) broke in less than a week. It might be a MAC formatting issue? Does LaCie care about macs? We have had 6 failed LaCie drives in the past 3 years (out of a total of about 12 -- WOW!) Why do I keep buying them. Gosh, I don't know!!!!

I've got five of these drives in various sizes, along with a bunch of other brands, in my small media-oriented business.Exactly one of them has failed. That was after two years of daily heavy use. AND IT WASN'T THE LACIE COMPONENTS THAT DIED.The internal mechanism inside - a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM - got some critical errors. Seagate is a good reliable brand. After determining that it couldn't be fixed with software, I pulled the mechanism... about a three minute task, requiring just a Phillips screwdriver. I then replaced it with a new Seagate internal with identical specs (Amazon, ~$50). LaCie's parts - power supply, logic board, Firewire/SATA/USB i/o - came right back up. Formatted the new Seagate, and ran automated "stress test" of random read/writes of 10MB files for ten minutes: perfect.--It's been said "All hard drives have either failed or are about to fail". That's why we make backups. Considering all we're trying to put on those tiny magnetic disks, and what we subject them to, I'm surprised at how few failures we see...Despite the failure, I'd buy this model again. Except I don't have to... changing the internal Seagate gave me a brand-new drive for 1/3 the cost.

This is my 4th LaCie Rikki drive. I use them for backups and travel because they are really small and (so far!) reliable. I hate the power adapters that you have to use with desktop drives, and these of course don't require them. They are not fast drives, so if you need 7200 PRM speed for digital video, etc., look elsewhere. But for basic backup and portable storage, they are fantastic. I also bought the LaCie "Coat" case for each drive, a nice padded bag with a little pouch for a short USB cable. I also like the style of both Rikki and Coat, although style is secondary to me for these kinds of things.

I've had no problems with this drive. In fact, I've never had a problem with a LaCie drive even though I understand that all hard drives eventually go to hard drive heaven. I never know what to say about peoples complaints about early hard drive failures as some people have described here. If you look at reviews of other hard drives, there are complaints about each of them. I'm not minimizing how distressing it is, it just seems to be a problem amongst all the brands. Having said that:This drive is very fast (I do have a USB 3 docking station) so I can do a backup very quickly. It's small, extremely attractive and the price is right. If appearances are important to you at all, this thing looks very slick on a desk. My favorite amongst all my external hard drives. Very highly recommended.

I am now using my third Lacie Thunderbolt drive. The first would run, but would not mount. The second would not even start up. Would not spin up. The third (Lacie replaced the first one twice) runs, but there are two problems -- so far.1. It's really loud! The fan sounds as though the unit will levitate. I can't use it in the video editing / audio studio it was planned for.2. When I plug the second display into the Lacie drive, I get strange colors. It makes the second display unusable. This one will go back, and that's three strikes and you're out.Definitely not ready for prime time. (Or any other time.)

I've had it over a month now, I almost didn't go LaCie again but I'm such a huge fan and this drive delivers. I installed a USB 3.0 Card Buffalo Technology DriveStation SuperSpeed USB 3.0 PCI Express 2-Port Interface Card IFC-PCIE2U3 just for this drive and it is so much faster and better than my racked LaCie drives. Plus you really can't beat the quality, capacity and price. When I replace my other drives I'll be getting one of these again to stack on top of the other one. It's small, looks so cool, SO quiet, I never hear it like my other ones.I highly recommend it and for those that get a bad one, every product has bad ones, just get a replacement before you blow it off. It's worth it. I've had every kind of external you can think of and try to replace them on a yearly basis so that I don't lose sensitive work data and pictures, etc... LaCie has been the best by far so far... I do have a WD for traveling, kind of a throw away, but I'm falling for LaCie more and more each time I use them.

The best thing about the rikiki is that its slim, stylish, and has aluminum body. This makes it very distinct with many other portable hard drives. The aluminum is really nice and it actually helps the hard drive cool down faster.Pros:Aluminum: allows the hard drive to cool down faster than most non auminum hard driveSlim: alot of people really don't realize how benefitial it is that its this slim. it fits in your pocket easily and to me that a really nicething. you wont find that many hard drives this slim.Stylish:Cons:The software package.Honestly, if you are buying this device for the software it comes with, I definitely do not recommend it. Most of the software are really complicated and sometimes does not function. Furthermore, there isn't much troubleshooting information available to diagnosing software error for Lacie. Furthermore, the USB Boost feature which i really wanted is not compatible with windows 7 or mac at all. The software package really feels like it was prepared for windows 7 or mac at all.Overall, but this hard drive if you care about the stylish design slim fit and you just want to use it to store information. this hard drive would also be a great if you don't plan on using it on a windows 7 or mac computer. I bought this hard drive for the stylish, slim finish and to store basic information and i find it a great buy.

I bought this for my Mac as a backup storage option. Did all of my research and decided to go with the LaCie for its size and as a result of other reviews. Well, I had problems from the first couple of days but they seemed to clear up. Now its two weeks later and the drive automatically shuts off. Additionally, all the data that I transferred to it has not disappeared. I haven't lost the data since it was a backup drive - but I'm glad it failed quickly. I'm going back to the drives from G-Tech which have always performed well for me.

Just got the Lacie Rikiki 1 TB USB 3.0 and it works just as expected. Phantastic transfer rates of up to 90 MB/s when transferring single 10 Gb backup files (I am using a high-end notebook with USB 3.0 so there is no restriction on that side), and creating a 100 GB data backup to that disk still transfered at ~40-50 Mb/s. USB 2.0 works with one cable on my older notebook. So the speed is great, size and design are superb (yes it is a bit thicker than usual 500 GB harddisks but it has an even smaller footprint than most of them). When you first plug it in it asks you how to partition the device (one device or addition of a small up to 32 GB Mac/Linux transfer partition, and notifies you that it WILL allow you to just wipe the disk and format it however you like with the standard windows software. Really nice, and one of the main reasons why I preferred this drive over the cheaper WD one which seems to have some annoying crippleware on it that seems to be difficult to get rid of.My main criticism is the fact that Lacie drives seem to never spin down (this is my second Lacie, the first one beeing a 3,5" 250 GB disk, and it had exactly the same problem). No matter what you do, even unmounting the drive does not set it to sleep. As long as it has power, it will keep spinning- for the desktop version even shutting down the computer did not help. At least the disks do that at a low, constant, not too annoying rate and they are quite silent. BUT I could imagine that a constantly spinning disk consumes more energy than a disk in sleep mode... so WHY, LACIE, DO YOU DO THAT?Since I am not going to let the external drive permanently connected to my computer anyway, only one star substraction for that feature. For the desktop version I would only give 3 stars since there you really don't want a drive thats keeps running even when you turn off the computer.

LOVE IT!Super convenient and ultra quick. I was worried about the cable and how it has to bend to attach to my macbook pro but it's a durable cable and the connection on the hard drive side is secure so I don't worry about it disconnecting from the bend of the cable. The cable is short but I only use this at the desk to backup every few days. The shortness of the cable is completely fine with me as it saves me time rummaging through my bag of cables! Backed up 500gb so far and the speed was as expected. Works great!

Purchased late June. Spent 3 months trying for reliable operation in RAID 1 configuration (the reason I bought this hard drive). LaCie "button" software isn't Win 7 qualified. OK, not vital. Got the 64-bit version of the Genie-Soft Backup Manager Pro 8 from Genie-Soft at no cost but LaCie supplies a version (maybe not 64-bit) with their drive. I've been told both that this version is qualified for Windows 7 and that it isn't. Programmed G-S BMP to back up My Documents & My Pictures, using Firewire 400 connection; 97 GB took 53 hours! Bought e-SATA card and compared speeds for one folder transfer using Windows Explorer Copy & Paste. USB and e-SATA about the same, each nearly 7 times faster than Firewire 400. LaCie hard drive usually remains connected to the computer for 1/2 - 2 days before it disappears from view in Windows Explorer. Several overnight programmed incremental backups failed. Almost always when the connection to the LaCie disappears, the LaCie fan stays in a noisy, high-speed mode. After about 20 nightly incremental backups, the Genie-Soft Backup Manager Pro 8 program lost its "script" for backing up my documents, wouldn't stop, even with Control-Alt-Delete Task Manager, and Windows 7 had to be shut down with a switch - and then rebuild the desktop on start up. M-S BMP 8 did it again after rebooting. Uninstalled the corrupted G-S BMP 8 software. LaCie advised to "clean" the LaCie hard drive and then reformat it. The LaCie drive failed to initialize. I'm asking for a replacement, having spent much more than 40 hours trying to get reliable operation. I'm returning, unopened, the one I ordered for my wife's computer when the e-SATA card made the back-up time for a complete backup a manageable overnight proposition. Both LaCie and Genie-Pro have responded with advice reasonably promptly - but the LaCie is now dead weight holding my desk down to the floor. The many hundreds of pages in the G-S BMP Pro 8 pdf file aren't numbered - making it less than first-rate. It seems to be an olde program trying to keep pace with advances in Windows. I could never again buy another LaCie hard drive or invest in this back-up software, sorry to say. There are disadvantages to patiently trying to make something work that has so many problems.
