Got some great goose video
Easy to use out of box and to upload video
I requested service and they had me try a couple of things. After that didn't work they told me that I would need to send it in. They issued me an RMA number and I sent it in from the post office 2 miles from the warehouse you ship them to in Riverside, ca.
That was the last I've heard from them. I've opened another case trying to find out what the status of my repair is.
I emailed the person that gave me the RMA number. No one will respond to my emails.
It's been more than two weeks since I sent it in and have heard nothing from them.
I was considering the Hero3 but based upon this experience, I will pass.
So, in closing, if you don't mess with it, it is a fun camera. If you try and upgrade the firmware and you brick it. Then sit down and wait. They might get back to you someday.
Update:
After opening a couple cases asking what happened to my camera I was told that it was shipped back to me on the first. I never received it. A few emails later I was told they were looking for tracking info. A week or so after that I received an email stating that it would arrive today. Looking at the tracking info it showed it was shipped last Friday (the 16th). It arrived today but unfortunately I left for T-giving vacation before it arrived. Hopefully it has the latest firmware installed in it.
When I first got the camera it worked great. loved it, I was excited about the wifi connectivity option. Once I got the Wifi backpack, and did a firmware update I have had a lot more freezes, and the Wifi still doesn't work properly. No live video feed on the app. Gone through several firmware updates with varying degrees of usability. A friend hasn't been able to use his at all since the update.
GoPro needs to fix the firmware so that it works correctly. According to reviews the Hero 3 has the same issues, I will probably replace mine with Sony action cam rather than Hero3.
Finally go to use the device and everything seems OK. Initially tested the 1080p video, I was expecting a little better quality video. Low light had a lot of noise. Next thing I tested was the time laps video. I live in Florida and wanted to capture the sunset. Set it up for a shot every 2 seconds. I let it go, and the red light blinks every 2 seconds as it should. Come back two hours later, red light still blinking every two seconds. I stop the recording and plug it into my computer. Nothing happens, no ding from Windows like you usually get when plugging in a USB device. Try again, nothing. I notice the buttons are no longer working and I cant go through the menus with the USB cable now unplugged. So I pulled the batter and put it back in, reconnected to the computer and it recognizes the device. Pull up the SD card files and there's only 10-15 minute worth of imaged. Needless to say but I was pissed.
Next day try again. Let it go for an hour. Come back, plug it in and same thing. Pull battery, replace, access files and about 10-15min worth of images yet again. So next I pulled the SD card and put it into a SanDisk card reader. I fully formatted (not quick), Fat32. Tried again, same process, same results. At this point I've filed for a replacement from Amazon. Until I get a working unit, I'll leave this review at 1 star.
I wanted to get some cool action shots of friends skateboarding and underwater shots. I couldn't do either.
Also, before purchasing this camera I would make sure to buy the add on lcd viewfinder. Trying out the camera meant taking a few shots and video then uploading them to my mac just to see how they turned out. And that is an awful inconvenience.
I have sent this camera back. It didn't meet a single expectation for what it is supposed to do.
The unit come as stated without the LCD capability, you have to select the shooting type via the monochrome low-res pixel display on front. There is no standard mounting hole for mounting unit on a tripod or conventional made stuff in the industry.
I got the Motorsport vesion with the suction cup. All interlinked arms of unit, including the one that hold housing w/camera in the box was cracked at the point where the metal nut meets the plastic arm piece, in all 5 were cracked with only the suction cup piece not cracked, it's made of a different type of plastic.
I contacted the manufacturer via their web site and they promised a 24hr response time, to this date I have received no response.
As far as picture quality, it is pretty good, extremely wide angle and the video quality is good.
The unit, for something that is made to be used for extreme sports, is made of plastic. When I contacted company via the web they wanted the seiral number off unit, to do this I had to remove back cover, which is poorly made with just little tabs to hold it in places. Upon removing the cover the battery was hard to remove and I was scared of damaging housing in trying to remove it with small flathead screwdriver, not good if you have to swap battery in the field. Upon removing the battery the serial # was a sticker placed on the unit, and this area of the unit seemed wavy, not the sticker but the plastic housing.
I know the unit is made for fun and is suppose to be smallest video recorder in world, but I purchased a camera for about the same money, granted no rough and weather proof outside housing, but unit had LCD display, view finder, face recongnition, builtin Flash, standard mounting 1/4" hole and had a titanium housing.
I returned the unit because I figured if the mounting arms are that easy to brake, I don't think I would trust it to stay mounted while I use it for skiing, diving or other rough activities.
Nice idea, poor follow thru.
For me se perfect for what He want to use it. I have to wait.
It takes great HD and wide angle videos in bright light settings, and pictures as well. I do have a few caveats, though, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars.
First, for indoor shots or shots in minimal lighting, the videos and pictures get kind of grainy. This is likely due to the automatic internal ISO settings, and the user has no control over that.
Second, the sound is pretty awful. If you're trying to capture people talking or animal noises, or any other defined audio, you'll need an external mic, which means you can't use the plastic casing.
Third, for underwater shots, they will be kind of cloudy unless you get an additional attachment for the lens.
Otherwise, I'm very impressed with the camera, and have used it a lot already.
