Having dabbled in photography quite a bit over the years, I knew that Nikon made a great quality product. I had no idea how great until I bought this camera body.I also purchased the Nikkor 70mm-300mm, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 and the 35mm f/1.8 lenses.I read the manual, charged the battery and held on tight as I turned the camera on. The room lights went dim and I knew I was in for some fun. :)I also bought ASIN:0470457724 Nikon D90 For Dummies by Julie Adair King because a friend and professional photographer mentioned that this model could be overwhelming for an amateur. She was right. In just a few short days, though, I have learned to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance to turn out some beautiful shots. There are hundreds of settings and tricks you can use to get the shot right.Of course, editing software is a plus, but this camera takes such beautiful raw (not just RAW) pictures, editing isn't as necessary as without a DSLR. The 720p, 24fps video is a plus, too!If you are just getting serious about your photos, or if you really want to capture that perfect shot without spending your life's savings, the D90 is your ticket.

I started out learning about photography on a Nikon D40, and was ready for an upgrade so I chose the Nikon D90. I love everything about this camera. The colors are awesome and you have a lot of control over the camera. I also like the fact that I can use bracketing and older lenses because the motor is in the body of the camera unlike the D40 and some of the newer entry level DSLRs. Now my lens purchases don't have to break my piggy bank!

Excellent camera; added feature of video is useful. The LCD display is superior to that of the D80. Th camera's menu and controls are much faster than the D80. Overall an excellent product that has ratings on optics, etc. equivalent to the more expensive D300.

I am extremely satisfied with the D90. I've long been a happy Nikon customer, and it was definitely time to upgrade from my N65 to a digital SLR. I've had it for about a month and have already taken more than 1,000 shots. The best thing about this camera is the editing features. I like minimal editing on my shots, and I can do everything I want before the photo even gets to my computer--change the lighting, add a filter, crop etc. I was also thrilled to save a few hundred dollars and use the lens that came with my N65. It works perfectly. I'm really impressed with the low-light shots I've been able to get. This camera uses every bit of light it can find and produces crisp photos when I was sure I'd get a blurry mess. I would definitely recommend the D90 if you are in the market for a digital SLR. You won't be disappointed.

I replaced my Nikon D80 with the Nikon D90 and am amazed how much better it is.It gives amazing detail at ISO 3200!I was very close to buying the very good Nikon D300s but after much research decided I didn't want a much heavier camera that cost $1000.00 more! The D90 has Active Digital Lighting which automatially adjusts the contrast and shadow detail. Like all of the settings the ADL is adjustable by the user, select auto, normal, high, off. Also the menus offer complete control. You can select the Custom function button on the camera body to do whatever you choose. I have it go to the first item in "my menu" which is a menu of the items you choose to quickly access.Read all about it here and spend the $5 for the user guide, its better than the 300+page manual that comes with it: 32 page guide eplaining all the camera functions/menus:[...].Review and everything you need to know about the D90[...].As of today (Feb. 27 2010) the D90 can be had for a great deal. No need to wait for what Nikon comes out with next, it will be sure to cost at least $250 more than what I paid here for my D90. And honestly the D90 is so good you'll love it.

I love the camera. Easy transition/upgrade from the D70. Playing with the zoom with 12meg pixel is just too much fun. I am not familiar with the video usage yet. But so far, I think I prefer using my Sony handycam....the handycam feels like it is ergonomically friendlier.

Purchased the Nikon D90 as it was highly recommended. Along with the 28-200mm lens, I returned both items simply because I found the navigation from Auto Focus to Manual Focus to be very cumbersome to use. Going from the Menu settings to the camera body to change to manual mode, then reversing all of the steps. Camera was also a bit heavy.

Wow!! What a shot :) That was my reaction after my first shot with this camera. I bought this just about 2 weeks back and im spending almost 4hrs everyday with it and I'm Loving it :) I waited to buy this camera for very long as i was evaluating other cameras like canon d550 and Sony but finally decided to go for this and believe me folks - this is amazing. It clicks pictures the way you want and how you want. Its a very action packed camera if you are a advanced amateur or even a serious pro enthusiastic. The camera is built very well, balance is just perfect (though should be a little lighter) but its great. The controls are rightly placed and response is just too good. So far I'm loving it and hope to click some great pictures now since I've upgraded to this one after a looong time. Happy clicking :)

My camera started showing the dreaded "F- -" and "ERR" error messages 2 days after I received it. The only way to remove the error sign is to remove the battery. A quick internet search revealed that these errors are not rare. From what I gathered, apparently there is a problem at the camera/lens interface. The problem occurs at least once a day and it occurs with the 18-105 mm kit lens (haven't tried any other lenses). I am returning the camera for an exchange. Hopefully the new one will not have the same problem. Otherwise the camera IQ and user interface are great, though noise reduction is a tad bit overwrought.================Update==================12/7/10 Long overdue update. My initial review was posted under the D90 Nikon kit (18-105 mm lens) review site, but now it is appearing under the D90 body only review site. I exchanged the 18-105 mm lens and the "F - -" and "ERR" messages have almost dissapeared. They have occured only twice in almost a year. The camera is great and the price has gone down over time. My new rating is 4 stars. I still think that noise reduction is overplayed a bit. There are newer cameras out there that give it a run for its money, including some tantalizing ones from Pentax and some new updated models from Nikon itself.

Wow, what a nice camera to hold and use! I regularly shoot with a D700 and D3s, but when I picked this up for my wife, I had a hard time putting it down.Of course it wont be as good as those cameras for really low light or pro level shooting for sports, but it more than holds its own otherwise. You can get to just about anything from the buttons and menus, and the camera is really light and compact. Image quality is also very good.My wife is very pleased, and shes not the kind of person who is impressed by technology easily. For more technical folks... it has on demand grid lines, exposure comp can be changed by a button on the front, as can release mode (single, low, high) and AF node.If you shoot flash, the built in flash can be used in command mode to control speedlights. It also has a cool calendar view of pictures taken thats really handy.... wish the D700 and D3s had that.Very nice camera!

I know that there are others that have gone into great technical explanations on the merits of the D90 and what it has to offer compared to other cameras - so I am not going to repeat those. What I can say is that I am known for buying new cameras and always "upgrading" - usually in less than a year. I have owned the Nikon D40 and the D60 - both what I thought were great cameras . . . and then the D90 came along! It blows those two right out of the water - so much so that I gave the D40 and D60 to family members because once I owned the D90 - the other two seemed UNWORTHY :) I bought my original D90 in early January 2009. I recently purchased another D90 body. I just had to have a "spare!" It is the best camera that I have every owned and I don't even think of casting it aside for a newer model. It is a great price for what you get too! I highly recommend the Nikon D90 to anyone!

I got this camera(D-90)from Amazon at a most reasonable price and I just love it!It's everything that the reviews say about it and more. Ease of handling, many options to choose from, and right-on exposures automatically. You can set the camera yourself or let the auto modes do all the work and the pics come out great! I am very happy about my purchase and recommend this camera to anyone who loves great pics. I've heard some people complain about the movie mode and the live view and all I can say is the d-90 is GREAT, it's not perfect. All you need is a little time to get used to the new features and I'm sure you'll come to appreciate the camera as I do.

I may have been a Nikon Fanboy and didnt know it. I had a D90 for about a year and loved it. Had a 50mm, 18-200mm and that was all i really needed. The picture it took was amazing. Very clear and very sharp. But then I heard about the 7D and had to have the video features. Well the 7D is a very nice camera and I feel like the build quality is about the same between the two. People tell me the 7d is in a different league but I'm not sure about that. My Nikon was sharper. And I have had shots that I took the same exact shot with same exact settings between the two and I just feel like the D90 is sharper. I know i'm crazy.Video is not really comparable. 7D has amazing video 1080 thats all there is to it. The nikons video wasnt terrible. But you really couldnt move around much due to the jello effect and thats not there at all on the 7D.Hope that helped. Sorry if it didnt.

Having used Nikon's D40, D60, D70, D200 & D300, the purchase of a brand new D90 fell right into place. This camera is for the buyer who doesnt want the "entry level" restrictions of a D60, but can't afford the D300. I wouldn't even call it a compromise on buying a D300, it's the smarter buy for me, right in the middle.Image quality on this camera can be equal to, and sometimes it betters that of the D300 in my oppinion. It's smaller, lighter and CHEAPER. Consider purchasing a nice Nikon speedlight to compliment this camera after having saved $400 not getting the D300. In addition, a battery grip adds to the pro feel and look of this camera while making it take 3x more pictures on 1 charge so I'd also advise you to purchase one (check out the Opteka Battery Grip for the D89/D90 - it comes with 2 extra batteries and is cheaper than the Nikon brand, they work the same way!)The lens this camera comes with (18-105mm) is nice and you'll get good use out of it. Very good range, clean photos, just be careful not to bang it around too much the lens mount is plastic afterall.I'm not saying that the D300 isn't a sweet camera and if you can afford it, get it - you'll be happier in the end knowing you got something more expensive than your friend next door. But if/when you think like me, being on a smaller budget and wanting to do more with it (flash, grip, camera bag, tripod), not caring about bragging rights (D3x vs. D90 - wouldn't bother me if I know what I'm doing with the D90) and knowing that the photographer's skill is usually better than the camera's technology, you WILL want a D90.

I upgraded from a D60 (which I sold easily on Amazon's Marketplace)for two reasons. I wanted more control of functions and I wanted to have more lenses available with the autofocus functionality. This is a well designed and fully equipped camera. Easy to improve on it; just add good lenses. I suggest a good wide angle (8 or 10 mm, manual focus will work), a wide-angle zoom (suggestion: tamron, sigma or tokina in the 10-35 mm range) and a zoom such as the Nikon VR 55-200, plus a teleconverter (2X from Kenko) and you have the ability to shoot all kinds of pictures. A sigma 50 mm macro lens will allow for close up. About the camera: very easy to set up and extremely easy to operate; just read the small booklet to get started. Some variations to explore later are to set up the quality of image capture (regular or RAW, at different resolutions) and the ability to shoot single pictures or a sequence, with or without exposure bracketing. In brief a camera for people who know all these details or want to or care to learn.Picture quality is very good and handling, battery life and LCD images are very good. I had a great experience with D60 and expect similar dependability and reliability but will update this later.

The Nikon D90 kit with lens is excellent quality for the money, but beware, it has over 20 buttons to figure out. So the first time I used it, I just put it on automatic and hoped for the best. The shots were a little overexposed, so I read the manual. The next shots were underexposed. So you have to toy with it a bit to get it just right. Most of the buttons and settings you will never use. I have 3 friends that all use this camera, and get impressive professional results. The camera is weighty compared to say a Canon Powershot, and it's not going to fit into your pocket. But overall, this is an outstanding SLR camera.

Many people have bought the Nikon D90 thinking of it as a Hi-Def camcorder first and a camera second. However, if you want to be happy with the D90 it's better to think of it as a best in class APS sized sensor DLSR which happens to have a movie mode.(To explain that, most DSLR's have a sensor smaller than 35mm as sensors get more expensive the bigger they go. Nikons and Canons have one roughly the size of the 1990's era APS film cameras, hence the term. Several newer and more expensive DSLR's have sensors that are equal to 35mm.)The D90 has substantially better high ISO noise performance than it's predecessors, all the way to ISO 3200. From some test photos I've seen the D90 even outdoes the D300. It is fast, responsive, has the new generation LCD that is clear and easy to read. In general is in every way an improvement over the D200 I used previously except for the inability to meter with manual lenses. That is an issue for me, but probably not for most people. This shouldn't be confused with full frame sensor cameras like the D3, D3X, and D700. I have the D700 and the difference in performance is like a Corvette to a Mazda, the D700 also costs a few times as much. The movie mode, which got most of the excitement, is both amazing and disappointing. Amazing because if you own a lot of lenses suddenly you can do things that used to take a serious pro movie camera; such as truly wide angles, narrow depths of field, and very low light shooting. It's disappointing because it's nothing more than capturing the live preview. There's no settings to speak of, no external microphone pickup, and as many people have pointed out any motion causes the image to "wiggle" on the screen. This essentially makes it useless for handheld movies, which I bet a lot of people were planning on using it for.I also found a lot of gradient changes (shifting noticeably in steps from light to dark) if you pan around in areas with a lot of contrast, like looking from inside a house to outside the window, even on a cloudy day. You can program the AE-L button to freeze the exposure, and that does help a lot.Despite my misgivings the movie mode has a lot of potential, just it has to be treated like a "pro" movie camera; mounted on a tripod and having shots planned out carefully. As a camera, like I said it's the best APS class Nikon so far, I only wish it could meter with manual lenses.
