This is my first DSLR Camera that I have ever owned and so far I am very happy with it. I am very much a beginner, but was told to move up to this one over the smaller dslr bodies and I am very happy I did. Very easy to use and customize the settings considering I haven't ever even taken a class, or even hardly read any of the manuals that came with it. I am just starting to buy other lenses for the camera to see how it works. The kit lens isn't bad, it's definitely worth the extra money to get it with the kit. Video isn't the best because of the manuel focus, but all of dslrs are like that anyway.

I bought this and then returned it. I like the movable viewing screen on the D5000 much better. Also the lens connection is plastic. My nephew bout the D90 and had to pay a fortune to get it repaired less thn 60 days later. As an aside. BE CAREFUL IF YOU BUY THIS THROUGH AMAZON. For two months they told me they had received and were processing my return. Then said it would be any day. 30 days later when I still had no credit I called again and they said they had no record of it being returned. It's 5 months later and I'm still out $1183 trying to correspond with mythical people. The problem is that Amazon only accepts emails through a form. And they don't copy you on the form. So you have no proof that they ever received what they sent you. Then they send you a response and you answer it, but get an automated form back that says they can't receive emails.A REAL HORROR STORY.

I have always been a follower of Nikon cameras. I made my first purchase of a Nikon FE in 1978 as a teenager. I then moved up to the Nikon F-3 Hp. After spending a few years evolving into the digital world by using cheaper digital point and shoot cameras and being afraid to spend a larger amount on a "real" Digital SLR I finally took the plunge. After reading reviews and doing other research I chose the Nikon D-90 with the 18-105mm VR Nikkor Lens. I was not disapointed! We have made leaps and bounds in the world of photography! It is everything I dreamed about in years past. The camera is easy to use and I continue to learn more each time I use it. Just expect to take great pictures right off the bat and continue in your creativity. The camera will not be what limits you in your artistic photography! Way to go Nikon!!

Where to start, this camera is amazing, it is very user friendly (after a brief review of the manual), very accessible because you don't have to access the menu every 2 seconds to change the seconds, simply use the turn dials on front and back, and the pictures are simply amazing. Even an amateur coming from a point and shoot can benefit 10 fold from this camera, simply amazing

Thought about waiting for the new Nikon's to come out, but the price dropped to $750 and couldn't resist. Glad I didn't. Had the D70 for 6 years now, but needed an upgrade. Twice the camera for 1/2 the price we paid for the D70. Can't beat it. HD movie mode is great, even the sound. Yeah AF would be nice in movie mode, but you can still manually focus on subjects just fine. All in all, great camera.

Updated 2/16/10: More than 11,000 shots later! At ISO's above 800, a few dead pixels are evident against dark backgrounds, but this is something I'm fine living with. Overall I'm very pleased with the camera and always look forward to using it. Although possible, capturing good video is difficult and the quality is mediocre for shooting moving objects. However, it's GREAT to have in a pinch to capture the unexpected. And I like it's compatible with older d-type lenses without the AF motor. I shoot portraits/candids with Nikon's previous generation 85mm f/1.8 and love the results, which would be difficult to achieve without AF.----------------------------------------------------------Addendum 11/4/08: I'm in the process of exchanging my original D90 for a replacement. I noticed a dead pixel, which I'm reading is common, but I feel that for $1000, the sensor should perform at least as well as my 3-yr old Canon 8MP S80, which has yet to reveal any issues whatsoever... and that's after being dropped and brutalized by our toddler. Only time will tell if the replacement D90 performs any better.----------------------------------------------------------To be honest, the D90 is a bit expensive compared its competition, and had I started from scratch I might have opted for the Canon 450D or perhaps the 40D, both of which have slightly better image quality (the 450D being much cheaper). But as I determined 18 years ago when I purchased my fist 35mm SLR after high-school, I found that Nikons just seem engineered for those who desire function over form. In this regard you could compare Nikon and Canon to the PC and Mac. Canon's seem a bit too plastic and lightweight, with default image settings built to "wow" the customer right out of the box. That's great, but I sense Nikon has a bit more respect for their customers who want to do more than simply point-n-shoot, especially with a D-SLR.In addition to fit/finish/features, there's an important technical issue I considered. The crop factor is 1.6 on all amateur Canons DSLRs whereas it's 1.5 on all DX Nikons. At 1.5, my favorite wide zoom lens, the Nikkor 16-85 DX, equates to 24-127mm. Very wide with decent telephoto. Canon's closest lens is the 17-85mm zoom, which at first seems practically identical, but it has an equivalent wide-angle focal length of 27mm. Those missing 3mm are VERY noticeable (which is why you pay dearly for incremental millimeters of wide angle improvement on either platform). The D90 was a no-brainer (not mention I already had two good lenses and a flash unit).

I love this camera!!!! I upgraded from a Nikon D70 to the new D90. The D90 has a much larger and brighter LCD view screen that is great for viewing photos after you have taken the shot as well as for viewing in the "Live" mode such as when you are shooting video. I love the fact that this camera shoots HD video as well as photos. I found the quality of the video to be excellent. It is also very easy to use.About the only negative I can think of is the fact that when you are shooting in video mode, the auto focus doesn't work if you zoom in or out. If you zoom, you have to use manual focus control, which is something of a pain. However, I think I can overcome this by editing the video clips later in Photoshop Premiere or Corel Video Studio Pro.Altogether I am extremely pleased with this camera and it's performance. The selling point, for me, was the fact that it included the ability to shoot HD video. I am primarily a still photo photographer, but I found the ability to have HD video in the same camera I use for still photography to be the perfect solution for me. (If you shoot video as your primary mode, this may not be your cup of tea, however.) Video clips are limited to 5 minute clips, I think, based on the cameras manual. This is not a problem for me, however, since I shoot video in small clips anyway, and then edit the clips using video software. That may not work if you are looking for videos in larger than 5 minute segments.Several video resolution options are available, depending on your reason for shooting video. If you don't need HD video, lower resolutions may be selected on the cameras menu. This model uses SD memory cards, which have come down significantly in price recently. I purchased both an 8 Gig and a 16 Gig SD card, both of which give me plenty of memory for both still and video shooting. If you are looking for a quality camera to use primarily as a still photo camera, but want the ability to shoot video as well (with the 5 minute limitation), this would be an excellent choice. I love the camera!

This is my first Nikon camera and I have to say I am extremely impressed. If you're at all familiar with manual settings, you'll find the D90 to be extremely well laid out for making any change required on the fly. Once you get that down, there are many other layers of settings to tweak as well. I bought it with the Nikon 16-85mm VR lens. Picture quality has been outstanding. Only thing I have to complain about (and maybe it's adjustable in a menu that I haven't discovered yet) is that the file numbers will reset themselves when you format the memory card, thus the potential for duplicate file names when you download the pictures. But that's a very minor complaint. VERY highly recommended.

I just got this camera for Christmas '09. I wanted to use it for a few months before reviewing the product. Let me begin by saying I am a beginner with a camera of this size and capability. But, since Christmas, I have use the camera for every event instead of my little point and click. I have found that using the auto setting allows me to shoot very professional photos with the same ease as my Canon Sureshot. I have recently began using the more technical features of the camera and I'm getting ready to receive some instuctions from a professional. But overall I love this camera. The picture quality is amazing! I look forward to growing and learning all the ins and outs of this camera.

I've had a religious conversion, a change in faith. All my life I've used a Canon. With the D 90, I've become a Nikon man. Not a conman, but an enthusiastic Nikonman. I've had it now for 10 months have have photographed with it under vastly different conditions in the US, Canada and the Middle East, from bright daylight, to extensive low light to glaring desert light, indoors, architectural subtleties and people photos, and it just comes up trumps each time. While an amateur can have fun with it, an advanced photographer can do more justice to this amazing camera. The thinking and action time is substantially faster if you get to learn the camera well. The manual contains everything of course, but you would do better to get one of the good books on D 90 that have become available. It will guide you through the priorities and make you enjoy the camera till it becomes second nature reflex. I don't think I will buy another camera for a long time. I've not been using the DVD as I have separate equipment for this. I stick to the basics and love it. Surprisingly, I found out during my travels, that there is a growing 'community' of like minded D90 users with whom you may share your experiences and communicate. Its kind of becoming a cult camera. That itself is a huge compliment to Nikon and the D90.

I'll admit up-front that I have only spent one day shooting with the D90 and have upgraded from a Nikon D70. The D70 was a great ~$1000 camera which I bought immediately upon its release. My photography improved dramatically with that camera and I had little motivation to invest in a new camera body. That complacency lasted until I heard about the D90. I wanted to explore HD video recording using my collection of Nikon lenses. I also wanted to increase my ISO to 3200 for night photography. Also, my D70 was having difficulty recognizing memory cards, so it was time for a replacement. The best way I can describe my upgrade experience is that using the D90 after three years with my D70 was like switching from a monochrome nokia phone to an iPhone. This camera is packed with useful features. The high-resolution screen on the back allows for impressive zooms that can verify in the field beyond doubt if you got the detail you wanted in your picture. It's got in-camera organization of your images however you want. You can store them to different folders on the memory card, sort them by date, and even have the camera record every image in RAW and JPEG.Most everything is pretty much in place between the two cameras. Adapting to the D90 is fairly intuitive, but there are several display fields that I have to look up in the manual because I don't know what they're referring to. The interface is so intuitive, it also contributes to the iPhone analogy I made earlier. This is a well-thought-out device. You can see the years of product research that have been invested to making the user experience rich within the D90. Doesn't make sense why they chose Ashton Kutcher to be their spokesmodel. If you're considering this camera, I'd assume you're already well enough versed in the world of photography that the following recommendations are of little value. I provide them for someone who might be considering a significant upgrade in their camera kit from a point-and-shoot.Here are some other products that go with the D90 like milk & cookies:Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (most people don't need the SB800- this one is excellent)Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon Zoom-Nikkor - Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 210 mm - f/4.5-5.6 Ai-S - Nikon F

I've been using my new D90 for a couple of weeks now. Got it to replace my D70s. It took a little bit of time to get used to the minor differences in the menus and button locations but everything was very straightforward and seemed to be well thought out.Things that I like:- Live View (surprisingly). Didn't really have this on my must have list but after using it to shoot low angle waterfall pictures without having to lay down in the mud to to see through the viewfinder, I was sold.- The LCD. Massive improvement from my D70s.- Recent Settings Menu. Really nice to be able to see the last few changes made. Helps to return the camera to my "normal" settings if I change something for a special shot.- Customizable Function Button.- 3D Autofocus. Limited use so far but seems greatly improved in keeping moving subject in focus compared to D70s.- Being able to actually use the pop up flash as a flash when shooting off camera in commander mode with an SB-800 as the remote, not just to control the remote flash.Things that could be improved:- Live View focus. Nice to be able to move the focus point anywhere on the screen but the focus is on the slow side.- Viewfinder Grid. Would be nice if there was a rule of thirds grid rather than dividing the screen in 1/4's.- File Naming and Number Sequence. Would be nice to be able to change the default file name and have the numbering go beyond 9999. This gets troublesome after you shoot your first 9999 pictures and start getting repeat names.- Wish it came with an HDMI cable not just the port to use one.A few minor "problems" listed above but other than that, I am extremely happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

I do not want to waste my time on this as it is WELL documented if you look, but I am another D90 OWNER that has the ERR message come up. BUYER BEWARE, NIKON should fix this issue, I will NEVER BUY NIKON AGAIN IF they do not address this, it was a lot of money for me, and I have a camera that is a dud. The last thing I saw on the screen was like an old TV, grey lines going all over it. GREAT camera otherwise, but like a Maserati that has an ignition problem, what the hell good is it? For all you Canon /Nikon squabblers YES I OWN ONE, and YES PROFESSIONALS have checked it out to find it broken too.

PeopleIf you love photography and if you think your are better than a beginner level or atleast know something about photography...Nikon D90 is your next step. This is all the good features packed in one camera...Nikon D90 is considered as the medium level camera but probably offers everything a camera should offer. I have heard my friends talking about their camera have around 15.1 mega pixels but 12 is more than enough. You can still blow the image to a big poster size without any distortion. It is slightly expensive but when you start taking pictures, it is totally worth it.I would recommend this camera to anyone who is passionate about photography and doesnt have a lot of money to spend on a professional camera....Lastly, I would recommend buying it from Amazon.com since they offer the best price in the current market.

I pretty much knew how good the D90 is before I got it, and it is everything I thought it would be. I got it as an upgrade from the Fuji S2Pro (a great camera 6 years ago, so good I didn't feel the need to upgrade until now.) I shoot in very low light a lot, and want to use available light when possible. This thing looks great at ISO3200! if you are shooting in low light, don't expect miracles from the camera, ditch the kit lens (it's great in good light or with a flash) get yourself a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8, and a Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the new Nikon 35mm 1.8. The next step up from this in low light shooting is to go FX format, a D700 or D3.

I've had my D90 for three weeks and I love it more each day. The D90 has a fully automatic mode so I was able to take pictures as soon as I got the camera, but its advanced features will take some time to master. The picture quality is outstanding even at higher ISOs. The 18-105 VR lens is sharp and will do for quite some time. What I don't like as well: The included software isn't terrible, but isn't great either. The video mode is 720p with 24fps max which could easily have been 1080i at 30fps. Still, the video seems clear and smooth on my monitor. I don't have an HDTV to try it on.I would classify this as a camera for the serious hobbyist. It is feature-rich and very high quality, but it still has a learning curve.Overall, I love my D90 and would recommend it without reservation to anyone wanting more than a point and shoot snapshot camera.

I was considering mainly Nikon and Canon before buying my D90, here a summary of what I have learned:> Great color saturation> ISO performances really good (with few light you can get good pictures)> Great 3" display> East to use and for non professional use and when you want to share your camera with someone (eg in your family) which is not familiar with A, S, M mode, I found the scene mode quite useful and fast if you want to take e.g. a portraits of your kids playing etc. without having too much time to adjust your settings - the auto mode for example also automatically release the flash and activate it when needed> Video mode is not perfect due to non-autofocus but is better than nothing. I found it usefull during holidays having to take video of unexpected event... If you like to take video in a countinuous way don't count on your D90 but again is nice to have it> Compared to D300 I found the weight/size a significant advantage. I like to take a lot of picture especially when I'm on holiday and having your camera all day long with me - in my case - the lighter, the better :) - of course without compromizing too much the picture quality, which is not the case talking about D90 vs. D300. It is true that D300 has a more protected body but then don't forget that your lens (probably) are not protect as well...> Nikkor 18-105 is not the best in class in terms of quality (materials don't give you the feeling you have a solid/well built zoom) however considering the price, the image quality and the the zoom range I don't see it as a bad option, especially if you buy the kit. I know that the 24-70 f2.8 is much much better but the cost is higher than the full D90+18-105 kit. Coming back probably I would but the D90 body + 18-70 or 24-120... since I cannot come back in time I bought for +110 USD the fantastic 50mm 1.8 and the "extended" kit is great> Compared to Canon 50D I personally like more Nikon for the color saturation, 50D is a little bit more expensive, I think better body materials and faster fpsGlobally, I found this camera a really good product, with an adequate price and well situated vs. actual competitors.

Huge iso/shutter ranges, it would be nice to have a quicker lens though. We have figured out a majority of the controls thanks to the easily accessible manual and quick manual and good old fashioned playing around. The best part we've found is that even without painstakingly setting manual settings the camera takes beautiful pictures on it's automatic settings. Our real gems up to this point have come from manual settings, but that just means we have lots of room to improve. An SDHC card is a good addition for quick read/write functionality. This is a fantastic camera to help the photography enthuisiast or professional to create stunning photos well above it's price.
