I've had the D90 for about a month and can't recommend it highly enough. My main camera for the last 4 years has been a Nikon D50. I also have an assortment of Nikon Af & af-d lenses, and I wanted to continue to use them (the D5000 lacks the necessary motor for the older lenses to autofocus). I shoot a lot of live theatre, and so low-light/high iso performance is important to me, and the D90 delivers extremely well up to 1600. Noise is well-controlled, and looks a lot like film grain. Once you learn how to mess around with the picture controls in the menus, jpegs can look stunning. Raw NEF files seem to need less processing after than the ones from my D50. The screen is big, bright & colorful. There are a ridiculous number of custom settings for almost every function, which means you can do a lot to configure the camera to the way you like to shoot. There are a lot of buttons & two wheels--almost too many controls--but with a little practice you can access almost any function you're likely to need in the act of shooting without menu-diving. I also do a lot of flash photography, and the highly-variable ISO control in conjunction with the ease of tweaking the white balance means a lot less time fixing color in Lightroom or photoshop. It also has Live View--but I'm not so crazy about that function. The autofocus in LV is slow, and taking a shot is noisy one loud click when the mirror gets out of the way, then the shutter, then the mirror jumping out of the way again (I think...). One other niggle: the multi-point autofocus doesn't work so well in low-contrast situations--ever since I changed it to the center point, I've never had a focus problem. I haven't shot any moving subjects yet, which is what it's designed for. I also haven't used the video function--newer cameras have much better implementation of this feature. In short: beautiful images, customizable, many pro features at a consumer price. Don't hesitate.

I am new to photography and new to the world of digital slr camerasthe camera is easy to use for the beginner and in discussions with other owners most just leave in auto mode when shooting picturesI went to dslr because most of my crtical shots are taken during my daughter's musicals where there is very low light conditions and the compact digital cameras just can't deal with the low lightin just about any condition other that the theatre the camera is smarter than me and I use fully auto or I'll use sport mode for soccer and other fast action situationswhat you must keep in mind is the importance of your lens for example I was not able to get pictures any better at the theatre with the kit lense than I could with my wife's coolpix 8000 that is why I ended up returning my initial purchase of the d90 kit and purchased just the bodyI then purchased a used nikon 2.8 80-200 zoom lens and a new nikon 1.8 55mm lensthe d90 has many features that most will never use but there are many lenses that fit this body which makes it versitalI like the feel of and it is easy to hold and change settings while shootingif you are new to photography I highly recommend a class prior to purchasing a camera this way you'll know what is best for you

Purchased the D90 to replace a D70. The primary features that were desired was greater ISO rating, larger playback LCD display and in camera image management and review. I found all of these features to be a significant improvement for photo shooting events. I was also pleased with a number of the improvements in the on camera button control features. They were more intuitive and functionally placed for ease of the photographer. Overall it was very similar to the D70 so the learning curve was greatly accelerated. Have used on two major events that I really was greatly a benefit to shoot with the D90.

Per product description, I expected D90 could drive my old Nikkor AF zoom lens. It can, but unfortunately not the whole range. For example, it cannot drive my AF zoom lens of 70-210mm. It's not totally compatible with all Nikkor AF lens. Also, for those ones it can drive, it works at only one aperture setting.Another feature I looked for in this model was the LCD display of live-view. However, D90 needs a button to turn on the live-view. The button is at an inconvenient position. To take the photo, we need to press the button to shut off the live-view first. This is a clumpsy operation. Canon uses a photo-sensor to perform the same operation, which is much smarter than Nikon in this sense.D40 uses a CCD sensor. However, D90 goes backwards to use a CMOS sensor. Is it a compromise for cost?

This camera has been technically superceded by the D7000, which of course costs more. However, after having owned one for two years now, I can say that it is still terrific and fully capable of rendering fantastic photos. For examples, search "D90" on Flickr. You can probably pick one up at a significant discount now. Be aware, the water resistance is low, and I am not talking about taking it in the pool with you, I mean don't take it out in the rain AT ALL. I got caught in a downpour in which I thought I was shielding the camera with a plastic bag for the majority of the time but somehow a tiny amount of water got in and bad things happened. Fortunately Nikon honored the warranty and fully repaired the camera. Yea Nikon!

There is a known problem with the D90 Camera that you should be aware of. It does not occur in all of the D90s. When it happens, the camera malfunctions and locks up. I was, unfortunately, one of the unlucky ones. I purchased a D90 18-105 VR Kit 5/9/2010. Two weeks later, the camera was unresponsive. I had to turn the camera off/on several times. Then, 8/14/2010, I got the dreaded "Err" message. The camera locked up until I removed the battery. I got 2 more shots before the "Err" occurred again. This time the camera would not shut off and when I removed the battery, all of the memory was lost. After getting on line, I found that this has been a known problem with some of the D90s. I located Nikon's phone number, on line as it's not in the manual or any information which came with the camera. There was no hassle with returning the camera for repair. The irritating part is, even though it is under warranty and this is a known problem, I have to pay the shipping to return the camera. Plus, Nikon cannot give me a turn around time. I really wish I had purchased another model instead of the D90. I spent $1200 and now I'm out a camera for my daughter's fall soccer season. Great.

Bought with the kit lens as an early Christmas gift to myself - and started taking some great pictures right away just on the automatic mode. Have been learning the M/A/P modes now, with pretty nice results. Wanting better low light performance to capture moving toddlers preferably without flash, I was trying to decide between the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW Prime Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (not the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras with noiser motor), and to justify the extra hundreds to go from f/1.8 to f/1.4. Instead, because the 50 mm is really 75 mm given the 1.5 Dx crop factor, which is way too telephoto for indoor shots in my house, I got the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and have been very happy because it acts like a 50 mm prime and is an unbeatable combination of speed and price at f/1.8 and about two hundred dollars. I still think the kit lens is useful for the range, especially for outdoor shots when low light is not a problem. Back to the camera itself, it is like all DSLRs bulky and mildly obtrusive at events as compared to a compact or subcompact that fits in a shirt pocket, but that is the price for better pictures. A 16GB card will hold tons of RAW and up to 4300 jpgs. Video sucks because of the lack of auto focus, so it's okay for very short clips with little motion, not longer or larger scenes. Still, I think it's worth the price to have video for those moments when just a few seconds of video will capture the essence of what is happening, which would have otherwise been missed trying to switch to a camcorder (not that I would carry both at the same time). My only regret would be not willing to splurge for a full frame camera - yet.

We were given this as a gift 8 months ago. It has already broken two times, once the camera started reporting that the lens was not properly fitted into the body and stopped taking pictures. Now the LCD screen is completely broken-- nothing but black screen. I can't believe something this expensive would be made this shoddily. And since it was given to us as a gift, I can't get any warranty repair done on it. Don't buy this, really!

The Nikon D90 is an almost perfect SLR. I still do not like Nikon's 1.5x multiplier with lens focal length, but I have gotten used to it. Unless you happen to be doing a lot of smaller room photography (which I do, as a Real Estate photographer) then this is a negligible gripe. Video and live-view are awesome additions over the D80, though for some reason I would like to see 1080p @ 30fps. I don't know why, but since it's a standard, I think it would have been easy enough for a 12.3 MP camera to include...Other than those two small gripes everything else about the D90 is flawless. 12.3 MP is enough for one of those Big-Macs you see on the side of the McDonald's semi trucks, and unless you crop like crazy in your graphics editor, you should rarely ever need more than 6 MP. The live-view is awesome, especially if you are trying to photograph over the tops of crowds at sporting events. (Something that was impossible to get right with a D80.) The huge screen is large enough to watch the entire Star-Wars saga on. Okay, I exaggerate, but it is very beautiful. Button placement is perfect, and coupled with the literally thousands if not millions of Nikon accessories out there, it is a no-brainier. While the D90 is a very large camera, it has everything to do anything. If you are looking at cameras, please stop and just get this one. You really won't regret it.On a side-note, I HIGHLY recommend getting a wireless remote for the D90. They are less than fifteen bucks, and allow you to take clear photos at very low ISO and slow shutter speeds, should you need to, coupled with a tripod. =)

I ended up returning this kit to get the body only and the 50/1.8 and 18-55 VR for about the same total.I read that the 18-105 does not compare with the 18-55 VR for sharpness and does not justify the cost as part of the kit. This is why I gave it a 4 star.I am really happy with the camera, I had Canons and really like the Nikon better now.In my opinion this camera is much easier to use, you can access the most important menu items (so many to list here..) without getting into menus. The programmable auto iso function is the best thing ever. You set the default iso that the camera uses in normal conditions (e.g. 200) then you set the maximum iso that you want to use to limit noise (e.g. 800) and finally you tell the camera what's the slowest shutter that you are comfortable with (e.g. 1/125).Let's make an example, indoor low light with the 50/1.8 and you don't want to use the flash. Now if you are in A mode and set for example 1.8, the camera will look at the light with iso 200 and decide how slow of a shutter it needs, if it's faster than 1/125 it will shoot 1.8-200-1/500 or so.. If 1/125 is too fast it will shoot something like 1.8-400-1/125. Finally if the light is so low what even iso 800 is not enough it will slow down the shutter beyond your comfort zone shooting for example 1.8-800-1/30.I find this a wonderful feature that I have heard Canons don't have. I highly recommend setting the custom function button to this auto-iso function because you will be setting this every time you change lens or zoom in and out (your comfort zone changes with focal lengths..)Video mode is just for fun, make a few short clips, that's it. Use a HD camcorder for long footage. No autofocus, exposure jumps visibly, and other bugs..The software is also very nice, transfers and views all image types in a breeze and you can also adjust, copy and export NEF files. Email sharing also very easy.

There is a known problem with D90 cameras that buyers should be aware of. It is the dreaded "Err" message that pops up time and again. At this point the camera malfunctions and is completely locked out.It is completely un-responsive to user-controls and there is nothing much anybody can do to restore it to a functioning condition. Even if you take shutdown the camera, take the batteries out, unmount-mount lenses or pray to GOD. nothing can make it to work except for time. You have to just set it aside and come back the next day to finish your photographic cravings. It doesn't happen for all D90's and as my luck would have it, I was one of the unlucky ones to land myself a lemon. And get this, even if the camera is under warranty I HAVE TO PAY for shipping to mail it out to the nearest Nikon servicing center. I should have stuck to a Cannon or Sony. What a colossal waste of my hard-earned $$$!!!

Spent two weeks in China and Singapore (Jan 2011) and took 1200 pix. Only needed the 18-105 lens which took close up, portrait, telephoto, action and night shots. My pictures turned out great just using the auto mode and point and shoot. Could not believe how well the night shots turned out using only ambient light. The D90 worked just fine in sub freezing temps and also the tropical moisture of Singapore. The auto mode allowed me to concentrate on composition and not worry about the settings. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

I own and have used amateur cameras for a very long time. It is rarely today that I am so impressed. But this Nikon, as pleasing as some of the great cameras of the past, compels me to recommend it to you.The central attraction for me, a picture taker not a camera operator, is the ease with which I can make great shots having very few settings to deal with. Night shots are outstanding, and this an inbuilt option on the function selector makes such things very easy to do.! No fiddling or tweaking needed nor required. Consider what used have to be done to get such shots.Like another camera that I still use and love, Kodak Z710, I can opt for PASM shots if I want to experiment, and on the Nikon D90 DSLR the results instantly displayed on the large screen on back making corrections very easy. But for those of us not into fiddling with such settings, preselected set-ups for the most popular shots are built into the D90, all set out on a function dial on the top of the camera. These are, Auto, Flash-Off Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sports and Night-Portrait as well as PASM.Which brings me to the supplied 18-105MM DX VR AF lens. Very nice for the price offered here, and it surprises with every shot, all of which are good! BTW.Even though the quick start booklet is very well done, newbies to DSLRs will get more out of the larger user manual. In particular that warns against fiddling - even accidentally BTW - with the focus ring on the lens when the lens focus selector is set to auto.Buy the remote control - it lets you operate the exposure button when your camera is on a stand and you are the other side of the room!Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control for Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D80 & D90 Digital SLR Camerasand a lens cleanerNikon 7072 Lens Pen Cleaning Systemas well as an SD memory card.Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card (SDSDB-4096, BULK, No Reader)and at least one filter to protect your investmentTiffen 67mm UV Protection Filter

I purchased this camera from Amazon.com, and could not be any happier! The very first shot I took with this camera was absolutely breathtaking. The image quality is STUNNING. I read from other reviewers that this camera is worth every penny. Well, it certainly IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. If you are worried about the price of this camera, like I was, do not be. This is a lifelong camera - because it's such a good quality camera, you can keep it for a really long, long time. It's SO worth it.For those of you considering any type of Canon EOS, I just wanted to say that I was debating between several Canons and Nikon cameras, but ended up liking Nikon by far. The colors of Canon seem artificial to me, while Nikon's colors are much more natural and beautiful. There are a lot of other reasons why I chose Nikon, but there are too many to list!Like most people, I did a lot of research on whether or not this camera was "the one." If you think about it, you get a better, upgraded version of the D80 for a few extra bucks (well, a few hundred). So, if you're debating whether to buy the D80, or even the D60, please, spend extra money on this D90. You WILL NOT regret it.Like I said, this is an absolutely amazing camera. Enough said! I have owned a number of Nikon cameras over the years. The D7000 impressed me to the point that I sold all my other Nikon cameras (except for two that fit into underwater housings.) Hope that you don't have to call on Nikon for help or support because I have never dealt with a company that shows that low level of helping a loyal customer. The D7000 is relatively small and light and the combination of that camera with a 28-300mm lens covers most photo situations. And, I have a 12-24mm lens and a 60mm lens for the rest of life.
