This camera has more features and capabilities than you will ever need! Fortunatley it takes great photos in automatic mode too! The 18-105 lens is useful for almost any situation. I also bought the 300 lens, but rarely use it. Before you buy a DSLR though, I suggest you consider how you will use it. My best photos are spontaneous pics taken with my Olympus Stylus 710 or Nikon Coolpix. I can always have one of these cameras with me, and can be taking pictures in an instant. The DSLRs are bulky and usually in the carrying case in the car or at home. It takes a few minutes to get it ready unless you already have it out on a picture-taking expedition. I always have one of the compacts with me, and the D90 nearby.While you are buying, I suggest you go ahead and get a good carrying case or backpack, basic UV filter to protect the lens, and a lens cleaning kit. Also suggest you go for the larger memory card...8G plus if you can.I almost went for the D5000 because it has some neat features not found on the D90, but at the end of the day I felt like the D90 was more robust, and had a better feel to it. I also considered the Canon TSi, but again felt the D90 was a better constructed camera. (the Canon lenses didn't seem to operate as smoothly or precisely as the Nikon's)I've had my D90 for a little over a month, have taken lots of great photos, and do not regret spending the extra $!

I purchased the D90 for my wife in October of 2009. Since then, we've taken thousands of pictures and the camera has worked flawlessly every time. We are new to DSLR cameras and many of the photos have been taken using the automatic settings and they turn out great. With a little self education, the pictures got even better. The camera has always been reliable, the only problem we've ever encountered had to do with using a low grade memory card that wasn't on the list of approved cards by Nikon. If you are considering buying this camera, don't hesitate. The build quality is great, controls are easy to use, the kit lens is even decent. If you are looking for a DSLR in a decent price rang that will offer room to grow the D90 is an excellent choice.

If you want a DX sensor camera by Nikon, this is the model for you.For under $800 today (late April 2010) this camera is the best bang for the buck, less than half the price of the Nikon D300s and nearly as good a camera.The D90 is one of the odd items that is actually well worth more than the approximately $750 (body only) price. Without spending nearly twice that amount on the wonderful D300s, the D90 gives you nearly identical results. And if you're worried about price and considering the D300s, then the D90 is the right choice. If money is no object, D300s is better but not enough to warrant a credit card payment.The D90 is easy to use, and shares some of the features of the D40/D60 but one ups them with better picture quality and more control. I had a D60 and 80 percent of the time it wouldn't take a picture--that's down to about 1% with the D90 and 0 with my D300s. (I take a lot of macro shots and celestial/night images. Regular photographs are never a problem with any camera.)Would I buy it again? yes I would. Would I recommend it over say the D5000? Sure--its more of an inbetween camera (between consumer and pro) and I like that.This is the best value, today, for a Nikon DX format camera.

This camera by nikon is one of the best in its line of cameras. Unlike other models, this camera has many screens to help monitor the shutter, aperture, ect. easily and effectively. I highly recommend that you buy a battery grip so you never run out of battery! Ive worked with many other DSLR cameras and this is by far my favorite!See the quality for yourself![...]

WOW...I'm not new to Digital SLR's and Digital photography and this camera is AWESOME. My previous SLR was a Nikon D-80 and I always got great comments from family and friends on my photos, but. this D-90 is very much a big step up. The live view for me is very useful especially in shooting group pix and outdoor scenery and buildings. It gives you a true perspective of what your picture will actually look like. Also, I wear glasses so the live view helps in framing shots too. The LCD is so bright, even in outdoor use. I have only had the camera with 18 x 105 mm lens for about a month, but I am totally impressed and highly recomend the Nikon D-90 to any class of photograper,you won't be disappointed. Ronnie B

-Its not expensive: With everyone waiting for the new replacement by nikon, the price of this superb camera is low for its quality.-Its versatile: Having an acceptable image at ISO 1600 gives you a good space to choose aperture and speed creatively.-Its rough made: When you hold it tight in your hand it doesn't crunches or bends in any way, its like a solid one-piece block.-Its easy to use: Everything is just in place, if you give the camera to someone who doesn't know about photography you will notice that his/her hands fall in the right places of the camera, having everything in reach.-Its quality made: If you buy a car with a leather interior today, it will still have a leather interior in 50 years, despite all other future cheap plastic cars having newer engines. Same for cameras: new sensors will come, but this will still be a solid camera with good ergonomics, in-body focus motor, pentaprism and a whole bunch of small details that make a difference.

After owning this camera a little over a year I got an "ERR" message. NOTHING worked to fix it, the camera was dead. This is a common problem on all the Nikon DSLRs and Nikon is aware but doesn't care. I called customer service and talked to a woman that spoke poor English. The bottom line is that after 1 year they won't fix anything for free, they won't even tell you how much the repair will be -- you have to send the camera in and they will then email you a price to fix it. It might be more expensive than the camera! They won't give you any averages, estimates, etc. Just send it in and if you've owned the camera 366 days, then you are paying full price for the repair (and 2-way shipping) even though it is a software error that is 100% Nikon's fault. What kind of customer service is this? A $1000 camera should not break when it is just a few years old! This was the worst experience I have ever had and I will never buy ANYTHING from Nikon again.

I have been very happy with my D90 kit. I've owned the camera now for about 2 years and have never had an issue with it. Great ease of use for someone who only knows auto settings, and manual is quite easy to learn if you don't know it already.Camera has substantial weight/bulk but not quite like some of the other models (Like the d300).Not sure what else to say about the product, it's the first Nikon I've owned and have loved it.

As many have done in looking for just the right camera, I read everything I could find and tried out a number of DSLRs over the course of several weeks. I had certain criteria that I needed in a camera: outstanding picture quality, good low light performance, comfortable to hold, large viewfinder, a versatile kit lens, ease of use and a price of about $1,000 or less (if possible). I quickly discovered that many of the entry level models lacked one or more of these features, but the D90 (for me anyways) had all of what I was looking for. The picture quality is terrific, even though I know a good photographer can take great pictures with a lesser camera, the D90 has many features that make those of us who aren't as good as a professional much easier to get good pictures. The low light performance is amazing. The grip is quite comfortable as is the viewfinder (particularly with my eyeglasses). The range of the kit lens (18-105)is very versatile and it's a great all around lens that is very sharp at both ends and not terribly heavy either. All this at the magic price of about $1,000 made the D90 and great choice for me.

I have owned this camera for 4 months now and am very happy with it so far. I am a first time DSLR owner and decided to buy this camera based on the customer review and consumer reports top rating. I haven't talked to anyone that says this is not a great camera. There is a lot to learn about this camera for first time SLR owners but after reading a few books on the features and options it's pretty easy to get the hang of. The LCD is nice and big on the back for image review, camera has a very nice feel to it in your had. Isn't very heavy until you put on a big lens (the lens it comes with is great.) However don't buy this camera because you think the HD video will be great to have. There is no auto focus and if you are shooting anything that is moving you will be disappointed. I have found that the only way to get good video with this camera is with the use of a tripod and to shoot relatively stationary subjects. Also I would recommend getting the 50mm 1.8d lens for shooting indoor portrait photography. Cheap lens (around $100) that produces great for indoor low light situations. I haven't found any downfall to buying this camera so far and don't expect to in the future. Photography is just a hobby however and wouldn't consider myself anywhere near an experienced photographer.

I am a long time Nikon user/fan but have held off spending the bucks for DSLR. I became interested in digital photography and using a Canon point/shoot have taken some decent pix but adjustments are cumbersome. My grandson shares my love of photography and has a D-90 so when I began looking he recommended it. After much research I bought the kit from Amazon and have not been disappointed.I also bought David Busch's users guide to make things easier and I recommend it. Controls are well laid out and within a few days I was able to set up for all kinds of shooting from indoor still life and portraits to outdoors and moving subjects. Being familiar with manual camera operation, I found the D-90 a snap to set up. The many preset auto settings cover most point and shoot situations quite well and I fine tune those as necessary. The kind of shooting I do suits the kit lens although I am able to use several of my older manual focus (Al)lenses. I do plan to get some faster single glass for portraits in low natural lightThis machine takes photos in places so dark that I can barely see the subject and using raw files allows for infinite adjustment of the pix. This is a lot of camera for the buck. Probably not for the average snapshot folks but for us non-pros who want control of the camera it is ideal. It's been 3 months and several hundred exposures and I'm very pleased.

I like this camera! There's only one thing that is not that good which is it's too heavy to bring with.

After a couple of years of use I was starting to outgrow my Nikon D40. I was finding things like the number autofocus zones and shortage of on-camera controls limiting. Since I'd invested 18-200mm and 50 mm Nikon lenses and an SB-600 flash the obvious choice was to upgrade to another Nikon SLR. I considered the D5000 but I wanted the larger viewfinder and higher resolution screen on the D300 or D90. In the end I bought the D90. It has the same sensor as the D300, and capable of taking similar quality photos. The D90 is also lighter and cheaper, yet offers a lot of features I was looking for (function buttons, two control wheels, 11 focus sensors vs the 3 on the D40, etc.).I got the D90 the day before I left for a trip to Europe, so had little time to play with the camera (other than making sure it was working ok), and time to read the manual on the flight. That said, there wasn't much of a learning curve to get excellent photos out of the D90. This camera handles beautifully, with all the important functions falling easily to hand. I especially like the function button (I have it set to switch the viewfinder grid lines on-off). I also like the depth of view preview button. I'm also finding I constantly use the info on the top control panel (a feature missing on the D40).Conclusion: I'm delighted with the performance and features of the D90. The low light, high ISO performance is outstanding. The metering handles most lighting situations very well. Focussing is very fast and accurate. The D90 is capable of taking astonishingly good photos with minimal fuss or fiddling.

I've purchased the camera for a month now, and it's just what I want, taking amazing pictures of scenery and portrait. My friends and I were really impressed with its amazing clarity and vibrancy of the portraits!! Definitely the camera to get if you are serious about photography. I got myself an extra lens as well, and that gets me by most of the occasions.And of course Amazon is the cheapest to get it...with good quality!

I absolutely love this camera. Coming from a D40x, this is definitely a huge upgrade. I use this most with my 50mm f/1.8 and I couldn't be happier. The only con is the Nikon software which kind of sucks... I uninstalled it from my pc and took care of that.

This is an awesome camera. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is a bit heavy to carry around and it does require a great deal of time to learn the features. I am a "Nikon snob" and have an older Nikon 6006 SLR that has served me well for years. Now that I'm retired and have more time for my photography habit, I wanted to move up to a digital SLR. I chose the D90 because I can use the auto-focus lenses I already own. If I didn't already have the lenses, I would have bought the D5000. I also love the HD video ability of this camera. I've only been using it for a short time and the difficulties I've encountered are purely of the "operator error" type. The camera is fantastic! Geared more for professionals and serious hobbyists than amateurs. I love it.

I could not be happier with my purchase. This is my first DSLR and I made an excellent choice. I highly recomment this camera.

Recently, I bought a Nikon D90 Kit from Amazon.com1.) I found that the whole camera set was produced in Thailand. After unpacking the camera and the lens, I found that both of my hands & shirt cuffs are having black dirt marks. Later I discovered that the black dirt was come from the rubber shell of the camera & lens. May be the chemical composition of that batch of rubber materials had problems, it seems that the rubber is aging. I wondered why I spent such amount to buy a mid-range camera set, but the shell quality is so bad --- no quality control for such kind of precision equipment. That means their quality assurance is questionable in Thailand. I will not buy any Nikon products produced in Thailand in future. Actually, I am a Nikon fans, I had several cameras & lens at home all of them are Nikon, as I trust their quality in the past (made in Japan). But this time a little bit disappointed.2.) Another thing, the 18-105mm kit lens mount is in plastic which is no good for long term use, and may not be durable. This is my first time to buy expensive camera lens in plastic mount. But I am not sure how long it will last without problems.3.) If you have bigger hands & long fingers, you will find that your right hand fingers will always hit your left hand fingers at all time when you use this camera. This is also my first time experience for finger hitting in using cameras in my photography lives.4.) Finally, I found that the image quality of this camera is not so bad compared to the shell after taking several photos in dark area.

Awesome camera, I finally went into the digital SLR world. Of course it had to be Nikon to work with my Nikon lenses from my MF bodies.

I purchased this camera and lens on 12-Sep-09 from Amazon. I read rave reviews about this camera and It was my dream come true to own a D90. Within few days I realised that there is something wrong with the lenses. .The lens started to rattle and it started giving rattling/grinding noise while auto-focussing.Then I mailed Nikon service centre and they told me it was a issue with the Vibration reduction function and may need a repair, )(yes a 'repair' for a brand new lens, not even a replacement!!!). I sent the product to the service centre and it reached them on october 2nd. But somehow this was entered in their registry only on october 07th. Then they updated the service order number saying they need a major part replacement(Service Repair Rank B2) in the lens which will fix this issue.And it has been lying in this state for more than 3 weeks with no proper end-time for resolution. When contacted, the replies have been more blunt than encouraging.They say they are yet to receive the replacement part. I purchased this camera well ahead of thanksgiving season just because I wanted to capture the colors of Fall in my neighbourhood. But now, its almost getting over and am totally frustrated for having invested in Nikon.I was terribly dis-appointed after having spent 1139$ for this dream.Since this is a Kit lens, I think Nikon felt they were giving these lenses for free that they didn't care for the quality.And now their service delay is even more agonizing.Update: I don't have any reservation against the product itself as it was an amazing camera for the last 4 years.My initial review was against their service . am changing the. review to 5 stars

I bought my Nikon D90 new from Amazon.I had to take my Nikon D90 to my local Nikon Authorized Service because I was getting an intermittent error message (err message). It happened the first time I used the D90.Sometimes it takes 2+ tries to reboot the D90 by taking out the battery. It happens about every 3 times, on off cycles.Every once in awhile I press the shutter-release button 1/2 way to focus the D90 fires a picture without focusing and it does not record a photo. It will do this until I shut off the D90 and remove the battery and reinstall. This has happened about 3 times in the last 2 weeks.Lucky I live near an Authorized Nikon Service Center in El Segundo, California. I took my D90 in and it took 1 week for the service repair. No charge since it's still under warranty.Everything on my D90 was checked. The only thing that was done was RSD Electrical Contacts. RSD means Resoldered Electrical Contacts. The RSD was done in the battery compartment.The D90 seems good at this time. I have taken around 200+ pics at different times. Only time will tell.

Great camera, it feels realy good an sturdy, takes a little time to learn all the features, but nothing over the top. Video is not the best but it's there which can be very practical.Best ever D-camera I ever had.
