Have had the camera now for 3 weeks and absolutely love it. A relative had the exact model and got several pictures that I missed with my regular point and shoot at a recent family event. Its easy to use, balanced in hand, and the pictures come out great. I'm really excited to get artistic and do some cool portraits with the kids, black and whites, etc.Only one problem occured, at a recent event where I had already taken about 100 pictures and several videos, when I turned it on nothing would come up, no buttons worked. Just flashed f--- on the screen. I gave it 10seconds and tried again and it worked after that. Maybe it was getting too hot.Anyway, its fun and easy to use. I'd buy another one, just have to do some research on forums to find out what that error was.

I purchased the D90 as an upgrade to my Nikon D40x that I picked up in 2008. I wasn't concerned so much with the new features as with the fact that there is a focusing motor inside the D90 so it will now work with all my lenses including the Tokina 11-16mm, and the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. I've also found that the D90 is markedly better at shooting high-ISO, which is one area where the D40x faltered. I can now take relatively noise free pictures in very dim light up to approx. ISO 1600 with very little noticable grain, unless you're zooming into the image all the way.Great purchase...Nikon has done it again!

Coming from Canon point and shoot and seeing it's limitations, i finally decided to upgrade to dSLRs. I wanted an entry level camera at the same time will give me that room for me improve as i grow my photography skills. I narrowed my choice between Canon 50D and Nikon D90. Knowing that both are almost match with the 50D better on the spec sheet i went to a local camera shop and decide which one feels better in my hands. Being a Canon shooter it was hard for me to even look and try the Nikon but when i got my hands on the D90 everything changed. It felt better, not too big nor small, not too heavy or light and plasticy feel and it just feels better in my hands than the bulkier 50D. I really liked the control layout better, and the quick info button that i eventually remapped to my quick menu which enables me to change AF modes quickly and easily. The pictures are just amazing and i could switch between different picture controls i've set for people (nice skin tones) and to things (saturated, popping colors). The 4.3 fps or so speed is just perfect to capture my 1year old son and the 18-105 kit lens was just perfect zoom range for my needs. Again not too heavy. I also have 70-300VR lens for some telephoto shots. I've had my D90 now for almost 3 months and the new D5000 and Canon T1i that have come out and if i would have to redo it again i'd still go with the D90. The HD 720p video is ok and a nice to have feature for some quick video clips of my kids. Overall, this is a very nice and more than capable dSLR and is right in the sweet spot of beginner (D40, D5000) to pro cameras (D700 and even D3).

I was torn between getting a D300 and a D90 but after thinking about it thoroughly, why would I want to buy a camera that came out a couple of years ago and costs $400 more? I upgraded to the D90 from my D40 because I wanted the sub-command dial as well as the extra features with the D90 (commander mode, bracketing, ability to use non AF-S lenses...). I love the camera and with the extra money I saved I was able to get two lenses and a battery grip all for less than for the D300 body and grip. Great camera!

We are wedding and portrait photographers that wanted two identical camera bodies for weddings. I had a choice of a few more pro lenses or (2) D300's to replace our D70's. Last year we photographed 16 weddings and over 100 on-location portrait sessions with them and they have performed flawlessly. Low light of certain venues or churches are where the D90 shines. Still playing with video and I can't compare it to others but it seems to work well in creating fusion videos that our clients love. This year we are upgrading to D700's but from my perspective save your money buying D300's and buy good glass. The D90's Rock.

This camera is fantastic for wide range of still shots. However, it took me a long time and lots of investigating to understand why all the videos I shot were out of focus. It's because there is NO autofocus in the video mode. This is NOT described anywhere in my user's manual. Buyer beware!!!! There are ways around this if you have enough light and a subject that stays the same distance from the camera, but I find using the LCD to confirm focus manually is very difficult. Even when I preset the focus before turning on liveview, I am not confident looking at the LCD that it is really in focus. Any point and shoot camera with a video feature will do better for quick little videos than the D90. (We have 2 such cameras in the house that are foolproof and they aren't even video cameras).

So, I upgraded from a D70s and was originally considering upgrading to the D300, but changed my mind when I saw the D90. For an average enthusiast the D90 offers very similar quality as the D300 plus the ability to shoot live video in HD. Sure you won't have the ability to shoot up to 6 fps and the better build (albeit heavier) body of the D300, but for $600 cheaper I couldn't justify the D300 over the D90.The biggest noticeable difference for me was the huge LCD screen and how clear and crisp the pictures look. Previously, on the D70s I had to zoom in to check my pictures after each shot but the new LCD screen is magnificent! I think I read somewhere the resolution on the LCD is equivalent to hd, but i'm not positive.Picture quality is great. I did not run any technical tests as I would I have no idea how to do them or interpret the results but based on my unscientific "eyeball" tests, the quality is great. I took indoor portrait shots with the ISO cranked up to 3200 and they still came out good. This is important to me as I take a lot of indoor shots. I also like the ability to create custom picture quality settings so I can easily/quickly access them to create the effect I want (i.e. vivid, etc).In camera editing. Sure its gimmicky, but its kinda neat as you could quickly convert your pictures to black and white, straighten the picture, or create a "fisheye" effect.Video is a nice feature to have. I don't ever see the need to take a picture in the "live view" function, but having the option to take hd video is nice. Like most people have mentioned, it takes a while to focus while in live view and it won't autofocus while you are recording. Also make sure to use a VR lens as I tried to shoot without one and the difference is noticeable. Another thing to note about video: if you plan on connecting this camera to the TV to watch videos, make sure you realize that the input into the camera is a "mini hdmi" input, not the traditional hdmi input. This shouldn't be a problem as you can find an adapter for under $10, but something to be aware of.The only other minor con I can think of is that this camera uses SD cards compared to the D70s which used CF cards so it was a pain having to get rid of all my old CF cards and buying new SDHC cards.Overall, this is a great camera and a great value as you get a lot of the things from the D300 at a much lower cost as well as the ability to shoot HD video. The picture quality is great and the additional settings/menus make this a great camera.

This is my first jump from a point and shoot to a digital SLR camera. I'm still learning how to use, but even using it on auto settings produces clear, crisp, beautiful pictures. It makes taking pictures fun! It is a little bulky and heavy so I reserve it for special occasions. My only complaint is that it's not very user friendly for a novice photog as myself. However, if you're more knowledgable in photo taking, then this is the camera for you. I've ordered the Nikon D90 for Dummies to hopefully improve my photo taking skills.

The pictures are phenomenal. The camera is built solid and the quality is top notch. The battery lasts really long. I am extremely happy with it and have no regrets or complaints about it.

This is my first review, and I am glad that I writing on this great product Nikon D90 with 18-105 VR lens. From the past few months I have been in the market for a moderate to advanced level DSLR, and been doing some research and found that this is perfect for me.I bought this camera from Amazon for $1030.After playing with this I am very happy with product and trying to explore more features. What I like1.Picture quality - While your typical digital camera screen offers roughly 230,000-dot resolution, the Nikon D90 cranks it up to 920,000 dots, and the difference is immediately apparent.2.I found the photos are crisp, colors are rich and lifelike.3.Easy to use4.Live view mode5.You can customize D90 to your heart's content.(I am using Nikon's User manual and David Busch's Nikon d90 book to get to master all the settings and features.)What I don't like1.PriceI would defnitely recommend this product to a friend. Thanks for reading this. Happy clicking :)

Having used this camera for about a year now, I must say that is has helped my photography skills grow. Why? Because of the sophisticated TTL command center flash that has allowed me to learn off camera flash and to master it as well. Matched with a SB600,800, or 900, the camera with easy adjustments correctly records images with just a few settings in the menu. In a flash (no pun intended) you can change the light output of your flash units and keep right on shooting. If you are planning on using flash, this is a great camera. The built in flash acts as a commander so you do not have to add an additional flash to the hot shoe for control. That alone can save you hundreds of dollars. The video is fine and although I have only used it in a pinch, the quality was fine. It does not auto focus but this has not been a problem for my limited use. I think the next incarnation will have this feature.Image quality is great and I can even use some of my film lens from my older Nikons.Autofocus is fast and exposures right on. Once you get used to the dials, most changes do not require you to go to the menu. This allows for faster shooting and less chance of missing the shot.I am very happy with the camera and highly recommend it to any advanced amateur.

I have been shooting with the Nikon D40 for about three years, and now that it is time to upgrade chose the D90, largely based on all the great reviews. I must have gotten a bad sample, however, since the picture quality was not as clear or sharply focused as what I was getting already. The problem wasn't the lens, since I compared both cameras using a new 16-85 Nikon lens, which by-the-way, is a really nice lens. Have to say though that the color fidelity was excellent and the images could be made to be very nice with image processing. But I expected more from a camera costing this much and ended up returning it.

Anybody can find reviews on the web extolling the virtues of this digital camera. I bought it and like it. It's the best camera I've ever had, and I've had Nikons, Sonys, Kodaks, Polaroids, and even a no-name half-frame camera that produced excellent Kodachrome slides--twice as many per roll as a regular 35mm camera.Still, when the media compartment cover popped open in the camera bag, and I pulled out the camera using the camera strap, I snapped the cover in two. Less than two weeks old, and Nikon's warranty didn't cover "abuse and misuse," according to their tech support, and besides there were no "user-serviceable parts" so they didn't want to sell me a replacement. They wanted me to send it to them for repair (at my cost).Well, I ordered an OEM replacement online for about $12 and have had it for a while, but thought the two strips of Magic Mending tape that hold the two broken pieces in place were a badge, so I haven't gotten around to unscrewing two tiny Phillips screws (after all, they're not user-serviceable). Besides, with a 16 GB media card installed, I won't need to open the media compartment for a while even though I shoot mostly RAW+JPEG images that take up a lot of space.I do not understand how Nikon's solid camera, which can even control an off-the-camera slave flash WIRELESSLY, can be fitted with such fragile covers for the battery and media compartments. Perhaps they should study the Sony DSC-R1 that I have, to see how sturdiness looks. The body I bought from Amazon, by the way, is warranted in the USA by Nikon (except for misuse and abuse) and was cheaper than other sources I looked at, even including the sales tax I have to pay as a resident of the state of Washington. Amazon is based in Washington.

The Nikon D90 camera was recommended by a professional photographer. After using it for two months and also using a D40, I am delighted to have its many features. I searched the internet and found several D90s priced less, but was warned to purchase from only a Nikon authorized dealer. The Nikon website lists their authorized dealers. Amazon had the lowest price I found from the authorized dealers, and I haven't found a lower price since. I had no problems with its shipping nor the camera.I also recommend the use of Apple's Light Room software, Nikon Speedlight SB-600, and a light weight Manfrotto tripod. If you are starting a photographic hobby, you will be spending a good amount of money for the "essentials". Amazon is a good source for many of these.

I have not played with the video aspect since i really dont care about that. The camera has not disappointed me at all. It is all i expected and MORE. I did not get the kit lens that came with the camera since i had other lenses already. The one that stays on the camera the most is my 35mm 1.8. They have become best of friends.

This has been the best decision I have made in a long time. I had a Nikon D60 (which was a nice camera) but not nearly as customizable as this one. This camera is fast, affordable, & the quality would compare to the best. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a good prosumer camera. Very little desire left for upgrading once you own this camera. I have owned for a month now with 2500 pictures taken & ZERO problems or complaints. I don't think you would ever be sorry with this purchase.

I'm a professional photographer and have used the D-80 and the D-3 at work. This D-90 incorporates many of the features of both as well as some from the D-300. It may not have the "full" chip, but I have not found that to be a problem. The size and weight of the camera is perfect for good photos. Some of those small ultralite cameras are hard to hold steady. The preview feature of the big screen is great. I opted for the extra grip that holds a second battery so it extends the time between recharging. It's a great camera.

I have owned many cameras like many of you including some of the latest slim designs - they are all great to carry around but I think one doesn't knwo what quality of picture unless one uses this beast. It has given us more reasons to take picture and it excellent response time is a pleasure to capture real moments.BTW, I am not an expert but number of complements I have got for my pictures are mind blowing - we also took pictures along side experts in Disney world recently and it so turns out our pictures are order of magnitude better than what they could do......Only downside of this beast is its size - carrying this around is not easy but for now we are choosing a great experience and output versus convenience......if money is not an object this is the camera to go for - both for casual photographers as well as for professionals...

Nikon has really found the perfect camera for beginner's and advanced shooter's alike, and it's call the D90. I am not a beginner, but let me tell you if I was, this is the camera to get. It has a lot of buttons but that is no problem, if you don't know what something is in the menu's just hit the question mark button and a descriptive explanation lights up the D90's beautiful improved high res screen. The screen is why I bought the D90 instead of the D40 or D60, it lets me eyeball my exposure accuratley that way I can make the necessary adjustments to my EX comp, WB, and ISO. This camera is often compared to the D300, I can tell you this, if you are thinking of buying one or the other, there are only 3 differences between these 2 camera's. 1. If you are a casual shooter who does not need 1/8000 shutter speed then get the D90 with its 1/4000 SS, this is more than adequate for most sports and action shooting. The D300 excels when it comes to faster moving objects, like racecars. 2. The D300 has 51 Autofocus points while the D90 has 11. You will only need the extra AF points if you are doing really high speed Action, although the AF on the D300 is really sweet, it has lighting speed AF, but like most things in life, people will pay for this feature and never use it, thats where you will save you hard earned cash buying the D90. 3. SIZE, the D90 is a lot smaller and weighs less, due to the fact that the D300 has and Aluminum frame, and better weather sealing, I will say that the D90 is no slouch in the construction department though it feels very well built. So if you are really pondering which one to get, I say for most purposes the D90 is a year newer, has video, the same picture quality and low light capability (except for the AF of the D300, which focuses a bit faster in lowlight) You can save 500 bucks, and get better Lenses, I shoot Nikons pro glass with my D90 and love it, I have the 70-200 VR 2.8, and the 24-70 2.8 and let me tell you there is no comparison. Those lenses are tack sharp with this camera. Or if you cannot afford those lenses, then get the D90 body and the 16-85 VR Nikon lens, you won't be disappointed.

After my trusty D80 broke on me, and with no time to repair it before important trips into Europe, I took the plunge and got this camera. Upon first grasp of the D90, it feels instantly solid and purpose-built; all the buttons are perfectly placed. I hate it when cameras get in the way of my shot; the D90, when set up to your personal tastes, will let you quickly adjust anything that needs tweaking so you can get your perfect picture.Noise, sharpness, color/contrast, and dynamic range are all perfectly controlled. ISO 1600 often reveals very minor to slightly noticeable noise, easily corrected in Photoshop. Even with the 18-200 VR lens, a lens known for sometimes being a bit fuzzy, you'll get your shot, provided you focus and adjust correctly. Dynamic range is improved thanks to the greatly improved D-Lighting, making skies bluer and highlights a bit more detailed. I don't really use RAW for my pictures (bit slow and cumbersome), and the only reason I ever WOULD use it would be to recover some detail in shadows and highlights; I can forget RAW. Get the image composed right, and D-Lighting will erase any need for that.Movie mode? It's cool. Not intended for any serious film-making (exposure seems to be automatically controlled and there's no mic input), but it's fun if you happen to see a nice scene to film. For the price, the Nikon D90 is a Godsend. If you REALLY need a faster framerate or a metal body, get the D300 or D3. If you DON'T...come on, unless you're employed by a serious news agency or shooting in a full-on dust storm, these things won't make a difference...get the D90. Has all of the Nikon quality and build as the big boys, but made for people like us. We want a camera that does what we ask, and when we have that perfect shot composed and ready, it takes it well.
