I've been using this camera for a year, and I'm very satisfied. What more can I say that hasn't already been said in the reviews, but simply, that this camera takes beautiful photos. I'm very pleased with the design and quality of the D90.

I bought this in 2009 and have been using it extensively. It is a brilliant camera. The new D7000 may be slightly better, but it is also more expensive. The build quality, the features, the ease of use is all perfect. I wouldnt recommend the 18-105mm lens though. Its no good except for the most well light situations. Its terrible for using indoors. I rarely use it nowadays since I got the 35f1.8 lens. I hindsight I would either have got the 18-200 or 55-300 as a telephoto lens and used the 35mm for normal use. If I had more money, the obvious choice is the 70-200. But D90 itself is flawless and meets all my requirements as a photography enthusiast. unlike the over-priced prosumer cameras, It doesnt leave you wanting for more nor do you terribly miss most of the features in a D700 or a D3X (never used either of them though).

It's interesting how most of the complaints about the D90 are quite clearly due to user ignorance/stupidity, and have little or nothing to do with the camera itself. But that's enough ranting, let me just say the D90 is my all-time favorite of many, many, MANY digital and film SLRs I have owned. I find myself choosing it over far more expensive options most of the time.It is, hands-down, your best option for traveling, due to its relatively light weight, compact size, common-sense controls, and auto-setting options that come in very handy when you just don't have the time (or inclination) to work out the perfect f-shop & shutter speed. And for the obligatory shot of you and your family in front of the Taj Mahal, the green "auto-everything" mode is a virtual guarantee that even that prosthetic device salesman from Cleveland that you're entrusting with this irreplaceable photo will get it right.I bought it primarily for traveling, but as mentioned, it turns out to be my preference in lots of other situations too. Nikon has announced repeatedly that the D90 will remain in their line, even after the "replacement" D7000 comes out, so I guess a lot of other folks feel the same sort of loyalty. In fact, I just ordered a second one to serve as my backup for field work, after schlepping the much heavier D300s one too many times. One caviat: although it does shoot videos, it's not a video camera; and you will not want to use it as your primary instrument for videos. If you're upgrading from a D80 solely for the video capability (as people keep telling me they are), I would strongly suggest that you keep the D80, buy a Flip for a hundred bucks, and save a pile of dough.

I've been taking photos with non-DSLR (yet high quality) cameras for years, but decided that the time was right to "graduate" to a DSLR. My goal was to have a camera that both my wife and I could use for everything.. family pictures, camping trips, wildlife, sports action shots, etc., and I knew that the only way to do all that stuff well was with a good camera and several good lenses.I almost went with the Lumix DMC-GF1, being attracted to its small body. However, I ended up deciding against it due to the relatively limited number of four-thirds lenses available (both from Panasonic and in the market at large), and the huge number of high-quality lenses available from Nikon (Nikkor) and other vendors like Tamron, Sigma, etc. I decided against the Canon line due to issues I've had with Canon on other (non-camera) devices.Anyway, out-of-the-box, with the 18-105mm kit lens, I was taking fantastic pictures effortlessly with the "automatic" settings. I also purchased the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G for some serious zoom capabilities. But what really impressed me was the very easy way of using Shutter and Aperture priority modes - before I knew it, I was taking high-shutter-speed, high-frame count photos of kids in the pool - the good shots all have the "wow" factor that I've missed with other cameras.I say that this camera is "educational" because using it is actually teaching me how to be a better photographer! Before I got the D90, I had a passing understanding of aperture, shutter speed, focal lengths, etc., but using the D90 has made me want to take FULL advantage of it, so I've paid even more attention to how it's doing what, and now understand why some lenses cost so much.I'm toying with buying a "prime", faster, lens, because I'd like to get some neat-looking "bokeh" pictures - and also a macro lens for taking some close-ups.So, in summary, if you're thinking of moving up from a lesser camera into the pro-sumer DSLR camera, the D90 is (imho) a fantastic choice.

Well, before buying this D90, I had read reviews of almost all DSLRS in entry and mid level segment. I had to shortlist the following cameras out of my research - Nikon D90, Nikon D7000, Canon 60D, Canon 7D. D90 may not have all the features which the others have in this comparison - Its video capture may not be as great as the Canon but the image quality is definitely better - Beyond a point pixels does not matter - 12.3 MP is still a very good image resolution - The built is not that great - may be thats why the price appears to be catchy. If you are new to handling DSLRs, then pick this one. As far as the lenses are concerned, Nikkor is a pioneer in this category and there is lot of option to choose from. Canon 60D is costlier than D90. D7000 is costlier than 60D and 7D seems to be the most expensive one. If you are a Nikkon follower, you can grab this piece without any doubt. D7000 seems to be the best camera which has almost all the features which unfornutaley comes at a very price that did not fit my budget. For the lenses, to start with please grab a few from your friends and then test these which ones are suitable for your style of photography - If you wish to take pics only at parties, then 18-55mm should be sufficeint or else you can try for 18-105mm or a combination of 18-55 VR and 70-300mm telephoto.

This is a very good all-around camera. Having been a photographer for over 35 years, I'm dazzled by the shooting options and controls digital cameras offer. The D90 is good in that respect. I'd like to see a little better build quality. It feels pretty solid, but not up to the old F series. The ergonomics are good, but you have to be able to arrange your fingers in ways that make me wonder if I'm accidentally flashing a gang sign to manipulate some of the functions (I'll keep my head down). Image quality is very good, although my D40X that I retired in order to get this camera, was just as good at low ISO. It IS a LOT better at high ISO. For me, 1600 looks very good. 3200 is...not so hot (perhaps I'll learn some Lightroom corrections that will improve it). Shooting performance is quick and crisp. I haven't completely figured out the autofocus modes and what works for what situation. I wish all these cameras had screens that were better at manual focus. The auto bracketing functions are really cool, but not special to this camera...they all seem to have that now. I bought this camera so I could use more lenses (the D40X had no internal autofocus motor). When I attach my 85mm f/1.8, magic happens. I shoot business and civic events, business portraiture, copy artwork, and a lot of stage stuff...music, dance, theater. The D90 seems to do a very good job and should make me money.

The D90 is a great camera for novices and seasoned photographers alike. It is fairly easy to use, and has a full-auto setting for newer photographers, or lazy ones. The stock lens is decent, but nothing to write home about. It's handy to have around for sporting events where the zoom and auto-focus comes in handy. The video is great, but it's not HD. It doesn't really make a difference to me, but if it makes a difference to you consider getting a Flip HD.Since I bought this camera, I have recommended it to 3 friends who have also bought it and loved it. They each had kids and got the photography bug - you know the type.My honest recommendation for the D90 is to buy an old school 50mm fixed focal length lens (you can find these easily for $40 or less). The picture quality is gorgeous, and running on full-manual is the best way to get the most out ofan DSLR in my humble opinion. You obviously need to know some photography basics, but don't let that scare you - photography can be as simple or as difficult as you make it.If you're looking for a high-end camera, look into full-frame DSLRs ($2500+). If you don't know what that means, you don't need it.If you're looking for a great mid-price range camera that will last years and fulfill just about all of your needs - the D90 comes highly recommended!

Don't want to add what is already here. First of all, buy this camera instead of buying D5100 (I know the picture quality is better in D5100 due to improved sensor as of D7000) for same price. The control and bottoms are very handy and I am able to get good quality photo faster than D5000 or D5100. The motor in camera enables you to use autofocus feature in old lens. If you have money, go for D7000 which does everything as of D90, but produce better quality photo with some more control in camera (customize mode, two cards). If you don't have money, go for D3100.

I purchased the D90 with the 18-105 lens kit and also purchased the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens as well. I purchased a Sandisk 8GB extreme (30 MB/s) card, the 5M dollar home, and a lens Pen. Setting up the D90 was very easy (<5min). Using the 50mm lens, I took a handful of pictures using the "Auto" setting. The clarity and color of the pictures is remarkable. We have a Nikon P90 which does not do well at all inside our house where we have mostly recessed lighting, but the D90 took perfect pictures in every situation. Autofocus was extremely fast. Next, I switched the camera to the "Aperture Priority" mode so I could control the amazing aperture range that the 50mm f/1.8 lens has to offer. The results were astounding. In low light settings I was able to take beautiful pictures of my kids in action for the first time. I have only scratched the surface of what the D90 is capable of but I am very satisfied. I also appreciate the D90's construction. It feels very solid and the grip has a very secure feel to it. The cameras pentaprism design translates to a crystal clear and bright viewfinder, making it easy to compose pictures in low light settings. The LCD screen is also sharp and beautiful. I can't say enough good things about the D90.

This is an amazing camera in terms of picture quality. I am coming up from a Canon Rebel XS and decided to go to nikon because of the low light capabilities that i heard about, and they all turned out to be true. With the rebel i was luck to get a usable picture out of ISO 400 but on this i am able to jack it up to 1600 and still be perfectly happy. The problem is with the connections between the camera and the lens. For some reason it is not as tight as possible and this can cause a lot of errors while you are shooting. From a simple F-- error to the dreaded Err error i have experienced it all. I have not returned it because i was able to fix it for now with a simple lens rotation or two to help establish the connection better. If you read the reviews on here you can see that this happens to a lot of people. For the longest time this was the flagship of the Nikon Prosumer bodies and for so many to have these problems is weird that they would continue to send these cameras on the market with fixing them.

I was skeptical what the D90 had to offer over my D80 but I can't say I was completely surprised by the advancements having read up on both cameras. I only consider myself a novice photographer that wants to progress so naturally the first camera I started with was the D80. I had great success with it and had a hard time letting it go when it came to sell it. I turned right around and purchased the D90 body with the profits and I upgraded my 18-55mm to the 18-55VR to get a little extra for lower light situations. The first thing that struck me was the display. The D80 display always made it tough to visually see how the picture would turn out when displayed on a computer for editing. The D90 display is much better and gives a much better visual to check exposure and clarity. The image quality is a step up from the D80 as well. I was impressed. That's all I really have to offer on the subject. If you're a D80 owner and thinkng about taking a step up, the D90 is everything the D80 has and a little bit more. Worth the cost of an upgrade.

The picture quality is really awesome.( It appears better than 16 MP low end DSLRs). I would say all beginners and intermediate photographers can try this DSLR. This has many features and capable of producing great pictures.I bet you, you'll never disappoint if you decide to buy this DSLR.Cheers,Giri

I received a D90 kit with the 18-105 lens a few months ago as a wedding present. It is a wonderful upgrade from my aging D70. My camera's aperture lever broke after only a few weeks and I had to send it back in to Nikon for repairs. It is working perfectly now. Some thoughts:VideoDon't buy this camera for it's video features. D7000 has better video capabilities, and in my opinion, the small Canon S90 and S95 even eclipse this camera for video.Lenses:The kit lens that comes with this camera is mediocre at best. The only positive I can say about it is that it has an excellent focal range. If I was to buy a new D90, I would skip out on the kit and use the money I saved to get some better lenses. Consider what you want to shoot before you buy lenses. For me, it was the 35mm f/1.8 G. This lens stays on my camera body about 90% of the time and is a great walk-around normal lens with excellent low light performance. That leaves you with about $125 to put towards another lens.I bought a 55-200 VR as well... although not as nice as some of the 70-300 lenses, I have had no regrets from my purchase. Some other recommendations would be the discontinued 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 AF-S G for an all in one lens or the more expensive 16-85 AF-S G if you need a wider lens. They can be found used for around $450 if you look in the right places and produce better images than the kit lens.

After trying the D3100 & D5100 and months of research, I finally opted for the D90. VERDICT: I LOVE IT. I'm not professional and will probably never even be called an enthusiast (although I am enthusiastic about photography), but it is perfect for my daily use.In my book, the only minus against D90 vs D3100/D5100 is weight. I hear video isn't as good, but I have no plans of using my DSLR for video.

There are so many choices even if you are restricted to one brand like I am to nikon (because of the lenses) - In all my reasearch, the D90 came up to be the best value for Money - in terms of semi professional standards though the Pixel count is lower than the D3100 and D5100.The pictures are just incredible with 50 mm fixed lenses and it is really a question of how good the cameraman is rather than the camera. You cannot go wrong with this, if you are lucky with a used one - if I were to buy a new one, I might still choose the D7000

We bought the D90 to replace an aging D100, we also own a D300. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone considering a D300 take a look at the D90 as it does EVERYTHING either of us need to doand at a much lower price. I love the D300, if I had to replace it the D90 would have to be a serious contender given the huge price difference. The sensor and image capturing capabilities are identical to the D300. while the D300 allows much more customization and pre-set configurations, we find that we rarely use them. The nice little 18-105 VR zoom is also pretty nice for the price.BTW purchase the $9.99 Amazon branded remote trigger while you're at it. NL-L3 Nikon replacement! One more thing, this camera has a 100% automatic, point and shoot setting so you can hand it to your mother and just show her the shutter release, even pops up the flash if needed. HD video capable too! (I don't really do videos tho)

The D90 has been reviewed many times on Amazon, and some of those reviews are highly detailed and lengthy and go into lots of the technical specifications. Mine will be brief. I had the D80 for a few years prior to purchasing the D90. I enjoyed it a great deal, but I sold it and upgraded to the D90. It was definitely worth it. While the high ISO quality is better than that of the D80 by a perceptible but not great margin, for me the most noticeable difference was truer color, particularly in mixed/difficult lighting conditions. It may be that in the intervening time, I've learned more of the nuances of tweaking white balance settings, but I truly do not think that that accounts for all of the difference. Even at times when I don't have time to fiddle and futz with using a custom setting, I just seem to get truer colors with the D90. If you look at some of the online photography review sites, you will find evidence to back that up. I don't know how soon Nikon may be coming out with another camera, but I intend to stick with this one for a long time. I think you really can't go wrong with the D90 unless you are a pro and need an extremely rugged camera or one with an even higher frame rate.

We have both a D300 and the latest addition is the D90 which replaced a D100 that finally died. The D300 is a fabulous camera well worth every penny. HOWEVER you can have a D90 which is just as nice and nearly as functional as the D300 for a lot less money. The D90 has 70% of the D300 features and they just happen to be the features we use. Seriously, do yourself a favor and think long and hard when choosing a D300 over the D90.
