It's a wonderful tool that helps me to transfer all my VHS tapes to my Mac computer, but perhaps too expensive

Product works fine as long as you use the software that come with it, other wise it will not wark as a capture device, for me that is misleading. I will not buy from Hafner again would not take it back with out 20% restocking

Elgato Video Capture Device 10020840 I tried three different products (sent them all back for refunds because they didn't work) before I found this product to convert all our old home family (from 1995 to current) Hi8 mm tapes to digital. Fortunately, I still had the old Sony Hi8 mm video camera that worked. I simply attached this converter to the working video camera and to my Apple laptop and started converting. The application software is very straight forward and simple to use. It's helpful that it has a viewer window so you can see what is being converted. Yes, you do have to convert each tape, one by one. Over a four week period, I got all our tapes converted to digital. Only two tapes ended up not having audio, but all the other tapes converted (both audio and video), so I was thrilled and so glad that this big project is now complete. No more worries about loosing the data on the old analog tapes.

This device is easy enough for any non-geek to use, and it is a must-own for anyone interested in preserving the contents of their old VHS tapes. You simply install the software, and then connect your VCR to the video capture device, which then connects to your computer. The $82.98 price tag is a small price to pay for the ability to preserve your most important memories. Once you invest in the capture device, I would recommend buying a large capacity external hard drive, and dedicating it just for this purpose.

There is not much to say about this product. I opened the box, plugged it in, installed the software and began using it. It is simple to use and everything worked as advertised. I just wish the rest of my life was as good as this.

I tried this product as soon as it arrived. Everything about it is straightforward and easy to use. I've been clipping along, converting old videos like a professional. The quality is as good as the originals. Highly recommended!

I am using this with a Mac desktop and a Panasonic VHS player in Australia. The product was at least $100 cheaper through Amazon then I could purchase in Australia. Extremely easy to set up and works perfectly each time. I have backed up old home movies into digital and am very happy with the result. I have no hesitation in recommending this product.

The Elgato is wonderfully easy to use with our Apple Mac. No hassle, no complication. The discs burn clearly after the transfer, and as a bonus they can be edited before burning to make them even more fun. Just know that a lot of hard drive space gets used, so drag the movies into the trash after you're sure you have them captured on disc. Easy to make copies from disc after that. The transfer process takes quite a bit of time on both steps (real-time) so go do something else while it does its thing. We have saved about a dozen of our full VHS tapes so far, as they had degraded the worst over the years. We learned that you have to decide where to divide the content, though, as there is sometimes too much on one tape to capture and transfer to one DVR disc. This means turning off the Elgato at that point during the transfer to the computer. Easy to monitor, as you can watch it the whole time if you wish. Next will be the Hi-8's. Love this thing!

I just received my unit and I had it up and running with my VCR in two minutes. It worked like a charm with no issues. I would have given it 5 stars if the instructions were more detailed in terms of use of the software and how to achieve the best results. That being said, it couldn't be any more simple to use.

This cable does everything I need it to do. I have 20-year old analog, video8 cassettes which I'm trying to preserve and now they're all on my computer. We had sent a couple cassettes out to be converted, but they weren't edited. With the Elgato, I can edit, THEN make the DVD's I want. Great product.

Based on all the positive reviews I purchased this for my MAC. The software loaded fine. When I started the program it seemed to work ok. I was able to copy two VHS's to the MAC. Then it started asking me to connect the USB to the computer - it was already connected.I tried reloading the software with no result. I then called elgato support line. They had me try a few things which seemed to work but the program kept stopping after a few minutes, again telling me to connect the USB to the computer.So I installed the software to my PC thinking it was a MAC thing. Again the program stopped after a few minutes and asked me to connect the USB to the PC.

I purchased this with the intention of recording snippets of shows we had recorded on or DVR, but no computer will recognize it.No matter how I connect it it just keeps coming up saying "Please plug your Video Capture into the USB port" even when it is.I've tried to contact customer support, but have gotten NO response after 3 days and 3 emails.If you are stupid enough to buy this, be ready to return it immediately. I waited a few days too long, and now I'm unable to return it.

My goal was to use this, a digital converter box, and my computer to make a makeshift dvr. I was a little skeptical about getting this because it is a little pricey and it captures analog signals. That is kind of an issue when you are using a digital converter box. It turns out that doesn't matter. If you hook everything up right, you get a very nice DVR. You can also record a ps3, netflix, wii, xbox, anything you want. If you are looking for something that is reliable and does the job...this is what you want.

I bought this product after reading about several video capture devices. Everything I read about the Elgato was right on. The device works well after installing the software and plugged it in. I am using this with a MacBook Pro. Would recommend completely.

I love this product. It is extremely easy to hook up and the software is very intuitive and simple to use. I have a huge collection of home movies on VHS and 8mm tapes that I want to transfer to digital files and the Elgato Video Capture is doing the job for me. The process is rather slow, since it records in real time, but this isn't a problem for me, since I just hit record and then go do something else while it's recording. I then send the finished product to iMovie on my Mac (or whatever video editing software you have) for editing. I'm finding the video and audio quality of the finished product is exactly the same as the original tape, which is fine with me for my purposes. Be aware that the finished digital file will be huge, so make sure you have plenty of space on your hard drive before you begin. This is a product that is easy to use for someone who is not terribly tech savvy (like me) and I would definitely recommend it.

I found this video capture product did what I wanted it to do. I found the ELGato support people very good to work with also. They answered all my questions.

This capture device works very good with the Mac. The included software makes it super easy to capture your videos and export them to YouTube, QuickTime or iMovie.Unfortunately, there really isn't much in terms of built-in video editing software and given the reason why most people are buying these devices (i.e. to capture their old VHS movies and preserve them in a digital format), it would be nice if there was something along these lines included. Still, as far as the hardware goes, it's pretty simple to use and pretty effective.

Works a treat. Only drawback is that it doesn't copy high speed so it all is rather time consuming. On the flip side it provided hours of entertainment for the kids to watch their old videos whilst transferring to the Mac

I tried two other similar producets and this had the best performance. You really do need to meet the minimum system requirements. I tried it on a 1.7 MHz dual-processor laptop and dropped a lot of frames when attempting to perform captures. I thought the provided software was too limited and I use another software product for viewing and captures so I can change a number of the recording/viewing parameters.

This little device has worked flawlessly on my Mac and is quite easy to use. Highly recommend it! Purchased right here from the Amazon store.

As I type this I am transferring the 10th 8mm tape from my aging camcorder to my iMac. The software is a free download and feels polished. Essentially, you connect your camcorder/VCR to the device with AV cables, hit record on your computer, then hit play on your player. It has an automatic stop, should you not want to wait to tell it to stop recording after your tape is finished. After it's recorded, you can easily trim the beginning and end of the video. A 2 hour video takes up roughly 1.5GB, so make sure you have hard drive space if you are transferring many tapes.

The Elgato Video Capture Device is simple to install and use. I installed the software. I connected the Elgato to my DVR and plugged its USB into my MacBook. Ran the software. The first screen asks for the name of the movie. There is also an option for selecting a time for automatically stopping the recording. The next two screens provide super-simple, one or two click setups for video and audio. The final screen has the Record button. It takes ten seconds to set up for recording a movie.The software provides a video/audio monitor of what is being recorded. In the 1st screen, you select how long the movie will be. The final Record screen has the actual option for automatically stopping the recording, so, for example, if you find the time limit you set is too short, you can unselect the automatic option during the recording session and manually stop the recording.Once the recording is stopped, they give you a simple utility for trimming the video using slider bars. When you slide the bars at either end of the movie, you see the video play - like in iMovie. This lets you trim the video to exactly the frame you desire. After positioning the bars for trimming, hit Finish button and it begins to compile the video. On my 2.0 MacBook, this takes maybe fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the length of the movie.So far, I have recorded about ten movies from my DVR. The resolution is good enough playing full-screen on my 13" MacBook. I do not have HD video on my DVR, so I cannot speak to how well that works.I like having the active audio/video monitor before I start the recording. This lets me mess around in my DVR to select which movie to record and to delete a recorded video from the DVR after I record it onto my laptop.I have two complaints. Instead of allowing me to type in the number of minutes for automatically stopping the recording, I have to select between 30 min, 60 min, 120 min, or 180 min. Well, guess what - most of the movies on my DVR are 125 minutes! So I have to set it for 180 and then trim the video. I also have been recording the Olympics on my DVR, and some of those are 4 hrs long. The automatic shut-off is useless for these shows.My other complaint is that there is no Pause button while recording. Sometimes it would be a great advantage to pause the recording. But you only have the Stop Recording button, and once you push that, the recording session is done.After the video is compiled and saved to your hard drive, there are options for sending the video to iTunes, YouTube, and a few others.I am very pleased with this product and highly recommend it. I am looking forward to a software update that will address my complaints, and then it will be perfect.NOTE: This product does NOT have a TV tuner. This is strictly for recording off a DVR or VCR.

I had an older version of a video conversion device that didn't work on my Mac. This device arrived much quicker than I expected, which was a bonus. I plugged it in, fired up the software, gave it a try with a short, sample video I had, and it worked perfectly, first time. It wasn't long before I had dragged out several videos of my kids that I wanted converted. In a matter of days I had my whole collection in my computer. Now I can edit the movies in iMovie and produce some nice DVDs of my kid's younger days.
