This is probably the best and easiest method to get your old VHS tapes onto your computer & in digital format. In just a few steps, you will be recording & preserving your collection for generations to come. My ONLY gripe is that the software does not have a Pause function while recording, only Stop. So if you wanted two separate video clips in the same file, you have to record them both separately and merge them together in a video editing software to create one file. All in all - simple, effective, and affordable.

Great product! As long as there are signals, it can capture the movies, TV series from DVD & VCR tapes. I bought a different product before, but it limits me to switch Regional Code 3 times only.

I had a friend suggest this device since I had so many tapes that I wanted to convert to a digital format. It's simple and does an outstanding job.

Had a ton of old VHS home video tapes that wanted to get into iTunes for sharing with family members and watching on Apple TV. Used several other packages to convert the analog video to digital however, none worked very smoothly or all the time. Sometimes ended up with 10 chapters for a tape. Tried this hardware/software and it worked great for me. Simply hooked VCR to hardware to iMac after installing the software. Simple enough even for me and what I liked best was that I could view the tape while it is being encoded. No messy chapters to deal with and can input directly to iTunes. A little expensive but it worked for me so well worth the cost. End result a lot of clean MPEG-4 files in iTunes. Just what I wanted.

Terrific little gadget. Used it with my iMac and converted VCR tapes to iMovies. Very simple. Can then burn to DVD if so desired.

This product was great. The instructions made it easy to install, simple to use, and worth every penny! I was able to convert old home videos as well as some classics that are no longer available.

Such a great way to transfer VHS, DVR, anything with red/white/yellow cord to MAC. It is super simple. The interface is very simple to use. The only tricky thing is that you need to know before hand how long your recording will be, unless you plan to sit by it while it's recording so you can stop it as soon as it's over. But otherwise, it's so simple and great for people who aren't too tech savvy and don't need a lot of bells and whistles, but just to simply get content recording onto their computer.

I had to return this product.The picture transfered nicely over to my hard drive,however the sound was completely out of synch.I even had the Technical Analyst at work try to fix it without any success.He tried calling customer support,and they blamed the VHS machine or the VHS tape as the problem,even though we tried using the product on 2 seperate VHS machines and diffrent VHS tapes.Avoid the headaches.

I was pleased to find that this product worked as well as it did. It was easy to set up, the directions were well written and easy to follow, and it worked right away without any additional tweaking! The quality of the conversion from the VHS tapes to DVD was excellent. I got the end product I wanted without any hassle! Would highly recommend it to those that have VHS tapes.

Product works fine,easy to use,does everything I want it to do. Recommended. As a bonus, it cost less than half the price it costs in New Zealand. Cheers.

would rate this a ZERO of that were an option.....I received the eyetv hybrid as a christmas gift from a friend who thought he'd owed me a lot for the few things we were able to do for him.....he know i wanted this and would not buy it for myself. I was very excited to rush home, install and begin using it. Install was a bear because we have Comcast cable and settings are NOT as described in manual. However, finally was able (1-2 hours reading & fiddling) to get it up and running - ran it for 12/26 & 12/27, and it was ok, only brought in analogue stations from a digital cable box.......never did figure that outand then again the following sunday to watch the game on my computer while i was at my drawing table. The following week however, it went completely south! software could not 'see the unit, there is no eyetv connected to your computer. so i switched all the connections to all my usb & firewire ports one by one - no change. i tried the set-up assistant again - no change. rebooted - no change, reset PRAM - no change. used the included cable rather than plugging directly into my iMac - NO CHANGE.....contacted elgato only to be told it'd take 3 days to get back to me.3 days later received email, 'please send system profile so we can bretter evaluate your situation' the report is 644 pages long, but i made it into a PDF and attached the 1.3mg file to a reply email as requested which just took me back to square 1 by generating yet another NEW trouble ticket.it's now 5 days after i first reported the problem.....NO WORD FROM ELGATO CUSTOMER SERVICE, if they even really have such a department.THIS is some of the WORST SERVICE I have seen....EITHER they have NO ONE WORKING in customer service, or they are so inundated with complaints because of crappy hardware that they don't have time to get back the newest customer problems.I hope no more customers have to deal withcompanies who apparently create 2nd rate products and go out of their way to completely IGNORE the customer's and their needs.software =marginal to ok......features DO NOT WORK with COMCAST CABLEhardware =SUCKScustomer service= REALLY SUCKSLike I said at the beginning, you've now been warned, so proceed at your own risk!

This product gives you great quality for the price. Some of the other buyers have said that the audio skips the audio only skips if you are installing a program or editing video because to much is going into the harddrive at a time other than that on thing it is a great product.

This product works flawlessly, and is so easy to use! I found a bunch of old home VHS tapes, and after finding out it would cost about $24 per tape to pay someone to digitalize it, I went ahead and bought this to do it by myself. It's already paid for itself! It is so incredibly simple to use, and integrates seamlessly with my Mac software. I've never written a review before, but I'm so happy with the results of this tool I had to share!

What a pleasure to use this perfect product.The software is totally user-friendly and takes you step by step all the way.I get great results transferring my old home videos. Not HD of course, just very good 640X480 from old videos. It lets you trim both ends of the clip after transfer before you save.The capture connectivity device is easy to set up and seems very well made.Well worth the money for me.

I consider myself a prosumer editor so when a friend of mine gave me a random device to convert my VHS into a firewire cable, I thought imovie or FCP could do it no problem. Well, since my project is to convert all my old family home viodeos on VHS, there is no time code and regardless, they are cluttered with static and on/off screen flutters. I got it to work in FCP but it was a mess. I then found ELGATO and made the plunge and it was better than I had hoped. I installed the program and it worked instantly - not only that, it makes it simple: you set a time for an auto-off and then you can also trim the recording before it masters it. Thus, you can turn on the VCR, hit record, walk away and come back an hour or two later and finalize it in a matter of seconds. If you have old VHS tapes and you want to put them on your MAC, do not hesistate for this one.PROS*amazing solution for old media (VHS and other non-digital 'tape' media)*simple, quick set-up*amazing interface (simple program)*self-trimming (trim the footage after its recorded and before you master it to quicktime)*auto-shut off (not vital since you can trim but its great to set a timer to stop recording)*MADE FOR A MAC!CONS*best quality? Purchased Elgato Video Capture from Amazon a month ago. I've transferred a home movie (VHS) to my Mac and plan to do many more. Couldn't be easier! I'm extremely pleased with this product and I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to transfer their old VHS tapes to DVD. It comes with the cables you need and the software you need. You just need a VCR and a computer. Recommend getting an external hard drive to hold your movies while preparing to burn them to your DVD. This will be my summer project! Love it!

Video captured through the device I received displays frequent heavy video distortion and jittering making it unusable. The same video source plays perfectly when connected to a TV. I tried 2 data sources (8mm camcorder and a VHS), 2 different video capture applications, a 2nd set of cables and 3 different computers (all Windows 7 - Elgato claims they support Windows 7 and they provide a driver and 3rd party video capture software). The only common elements were the Elgato video capture hardware and associated driver. Based on the strong reviews I assume I simply got a defective unit but emailed Elgato tech support to see if they had any suggestions or if they've had similar issues with other Windows installations. The automated response said they would respond within 1-3 business days. After 4 business days I called. The guy I talked with was pleasant but wasn't able to help. He was going to send me a diagnostic tool but then realized that it would only run on a Mac. He said that my case would be set to high priority and I would hear back within 24 hours. I didn't. I'm not sure if my unit is defective or if they have issues with their Windows driver but I'm returning it and will try something else.Getting an RMA from Amazon couldn't have been easier so if I was rating my Amazon experience it would be 5 stars but rating my personal experience with the Elgato Video Capture device I have to give it 1 star. Obviously, from the reviews, most Mac users are happy with this device but I'm not sure if there are other Windows users who have used it successfully.

Item sets up easily and works as stated. It records in actual time, which is good if you want to watch as it records.

Like most folks, I have a supply of both homebrewed and commercial VHS tapes which represent a tidy investment of time and money. How to digitize them?I read the reviews for the elgato video capture system for Mac both on Amazon and elsewhere, and it sounded promising. So, I ordered it from Amazon.As others have noted, it could not be more simple to set up. I have a Toshiba VCR that still works quite well, so I set it next to my Mac. I inserted the software installation disk (into the Mac, not the VCR!) and it installed without a hitch. Next thing I know, the software was instructing me how to attach the device to both the VCR and the Mac, and I was ready to start digitizing videotape in less than 5 minutes. Not believing it could be that simple, I did a little test, and it worked exactly as advertised.Now, digitizing tape isn't going to improve the picture or sound in any way. Your digitized file will be the exact equivalent quality of the source tape. But, you wouldn't really expect anything different, would you?There are settings to adjust aspect ratio and sound volume and where you want your file to be saved. When the process is finished (which takes exactly as long as the source video, so a 90 minute video will take 90 minutes to digitize), you have the option to save to iTunes, YouTube, iMovie, etc. Drop dead simple.I'm awarding four rather than five stars because the system lacks a way to pause the digitization process. For example, if you have a homemade VCR recording of an old TV show, it would be nice to be able to pause the process during commercials and re-start after the commercials are over, thus eliminating them from the final digital file. This can be done after the fact, of course, in video editing software, but that takes an additional step. Not a dealbreaker, but something that could be improved upon, IMHO.Otherwise, this is an outstanding solution to the tape-to-digital dilemma. It may seem a bit pricey, but considering how many priceless home videos you probably have lying around, as well as the investment you may have made in commercial VHS tapes, it'll pay for itself in no time. Highly recommended.

I browsed around for a device that would allow me transfer old VHS to digital format and this product got the best reviews and for good reason. Within 5 minutes of delivery, it was installed and transferring my VHS to my Mac.It's a little more expensive than some of the other similar devices offered on Amazon, but it's worth every penny.

We're moving, and in all the sorting and throwing I wanted to digitize some old VHS tapes. With Elgato Video Capture on my 2-year-old iMac running Lion OS and our ancient VCR, the process could not have been easier. The needed cable was included, the software was super easy to use, and I can send it to multiple places (iTunes AND iMovie AND Youtube) without having to capture it again. I am so happy to have rescued these old family memories from deteriorating videotape. Nothing fancy, but I can do further editing and compiling with iMovie and iDVD. I looked into having a professional studio do them, and this was easier, plus I can also convert old movies that aren't available on DVD. I've never written an Amazon review, but was so happy with this product I wanted to encourage others.

Have been using this for several days to convert many home movies to digital. It works easily and well. Would recommend. Don't have to attend. When the tape is over, it is easy to crop the digital file using little arrows on the software monitoring screen (which look like word processor indent tabs.) I sent to iTunes and then burned to DVD. Also send to iMovie. Just a click of the mouse to do either.

All I can say is buy this product very simple. Works right out of the box.Great product. Not a lot of bells and whistles.

Okay if you have an Apple Macbook Pro you might not need this product, but I have an plain white unibody macbook and I had no way to upload video into iMovie from my digital video camera. This product should have been created by Apple because of its clean lines, great functionality, and the fact that it simply works and works well right out of the box.If you need to transfer video from one device to your Macbook this is the product to get the job done.
