I looked for a device that would work with my new 2012 MacAir. This was a perfect choice, and I have since transferred about 50 hours of VHS into digital format (external hard drive) via the MacAir. I have not yet used the editing features.

I have been using this product for hours on end for about a month now and I'm very satisfied with it. I'm digitizing a lot of Hi 8 tapes and I cannot see any degradation from the captured clips. It remains cool to the touch even when capturing long tapes. Packaging looks classy too.I bought another brand (lesser cost) prior to this and that one gets very hot during the capture so I returned it.

Easy to use, great interface, compact, and did exactly what I needed. If you need to digitize any analog material, buy it!

This device did exactly what it said it would. Was easy to use. I recommend it.Now I can copy those past memories forever.

This is a very good product at a very affordable price. I have already used this viseo capture device to convert hours of old DV, VHS and 8mm video home movies. The quality of the capture is virtually the same as the original. Software is very user friendly, but I have a problem with the preview screen. Either I look at a jumbled, static view of my movie or a green screen, although I think the problem may be my video card, not the device. However, on playback the picture is perfect. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone interested in any video capture project.

Plugged it in, and everything works beautifully. The included software is basic but very adequate. Seamless operation. It's a great product!

Read that this was an easy way to covert my older format videos and it has proved to be exactly that. Website support isn't perfect but quite extensive. Recommended.

I'd been debating about getting a DVD player with a DVD-R option for $$$ and this is a MUCH better option. Easy to use, and gives me files that I can easily edit.

I bought the (creatively named) Elgato Video Capture Device wanting to digitize, then dispose of, a couple of large boxes of home movies on VHS and VHS-C tapes.The setup was very simple. After I installed the included software on my Mac Mini, plugged the device in to my computer via USB, then connected my VCR to the device using RCA cables, I got the VCR output in the application window right away. The device itself is very compact (about the length of thickness of an iPod Classic and about half the width), completely silent, and draws all the power it needs from the USB port to which it's connected.Recording was also very easy -- just hit the giant red "Record" button in the software interface and let the tape play. Since my computer isn't exactly top-of-the-line, I was pleasantly surprised that tapes played smoothly in the application window and that the resulting movie file was free of stutters and hiccups.My only criticism is that the simple cropping tool built into the app doesn't make it obvious what you're clipping out and what you're keeping. (The first time I used it, I wanted to delete the first few seconds of a clip and keep the rest, but accidentally deleted everything BUT the first few seconds, so had to rewind the tape and start over.)Other than that, the Mac software was great. After recording a clip, it gives you options to automatically save it as a file in the folder of your choice, send it to your iTunes library, or bring the clip into QuickTime or iMovie for further editing. I wound up bringing the clips into iMovie most of the time so I could add titles and transitions, and appreciated not having to first save the file somewhere on my hard drive then click into iMovie to import the clips manually. (Not that this is difficult to do, but it is a nice time saver if you're going to be digitizing a lot of content.)I was also very satisfied with the quality of the audio and video in the final recordings. Of course, the final product is never going to be better than the original source, and since I was starting with old VHS tapes, I didn't expect the end result to rival Blu-Ray quality. However, the picture and quality of the resulting digital movies playing on my computer was virtually indistinguishable from the quality of the picture and sound I got playing the original tapes on my television through the VCR.I"m happy to get back the closet space the old VHS tapes were taking up, and I like knowing that my old videos of family and friends are safely archived now in a format that can easily be backed up and that won't degrade over time. It's also been fun to share some clips with friends on Facebook of themselves from the 1980s.I would recommend this device to any Mac user looking for an easy, relatively affordable way to digitize analog video.

Let me begin by saying I am a novice when it comes to computers and electronics. I found this to be an easy and practical product. I was able to convert my old family VHS tapes to my computer by simply connecting the included connectors from my VHS player to my computer . Setup was easy. I would recommend this.

The device worked perfectly, I could convert my kids video into my iMac so I could play and share them with my families....great tools!Eric (HK)

Software is so easy to use. I was up and going within 5 minutes. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. I am very pleased!

Love this product! The pictures are clear and the hook-up is easy. My only beef is that it has to record in real time and doesn't detect when the video on the VHS has ended if there is blank tape after the recording. But overall, this is a great device.

This is really a terrific product. I'm a Mac user and it installed without a hitch. The hardware is simple to hook up, truly idiot-proof, and the user interface for the program is dead-on intuitive. The process for video capture is completely straight forward, and should be able to be used by even a novice computer user. Unfortunately, there are no trouble shooting tools so, if you run into a problem with the audio or video, there really isn't anything you can do other than to check your connections and hope for the best.I subtracted a star for two reasons. First, you can do just about anything with the finished video capture *except* burn it to a DVD. For that, you need a third-party application like Toast, or iDVD. In my opinion, that functionality should have been built-in, or the program should scan your drive during the software installation to see which DVD burning programs are installed and then offer to send it there, as it does with iMovie, iTunes, and YouTube.The second reason I deducted a star is that this is a resource-intensive program. You can do other things while you're capturing video, but very slowly. I suspect that's to do with the disk and CPU being in constant use, but a potential user who has only one computer with which to work should be aware of the degradation in performance while the program is capturing video.I am an Apple TV (second generation) user, and by importing the video captures into iTunes, which EVC will do automatically, you can then stream them to your large screen TV, as well as watch them on your computer. Well worth the time and effort to take all those tapes that sit idly in the credenza, and that are never watched, and use EVC to convert them into digital format. By the way, if you're wondering, EVC converts all video to MP4 file.In summary, a good, basic product for the money, but if burning to DVD is your ultimate goal, you will still need other software to do it.

I read most of the reviews on Amazon before purchasing this item and was concerned with the negative ratings that were written by Mac owners running Lion. I took a chance and bought it anyway, and I'm sure my success is due to running an iMac with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I've copied about 20 standard VHS tapes and half a dozen compact VHS tapes to my computer so far. The software is very easy to install and run. I found that it helps to close down all other applications including Safari while the video is transferring. I didn't see any frame dropping, but more like a stutter each time the mouse was clicked for any reason. This is fixed by simply going into system preferences - screen saver - slide bar to never. Again in system preferences - energy saver - slide bars for computer sleep and display sleep to never. You can still put your computer to sleep manually. It's a great product for getting those VHSs into digital format.

I have been trying to convert my old VHS and VHS-C tapes to digital for probably 10 years and never got to the place where I felt happy with the solution until now. The Elgato Video Capture I bought over the holidays and used it to convert several dozen tapes. The results were excellent and it couldn't have been simpler to do. I have an EyeTV 250 Plus that I had been using but the extra step of exporting took a great deal of time. I also bought a Black Magic Video Recorder to compare with these two. The Black Magic is very similar in hardware and software, but I didn't like the output as much. The Elgato output is a softer image (not as sharp), but with the poor quality of the source content that actually looks more pleasing to the eye. I also had a problem with the Black Magic output not playing back properly on my Apple TV 2, while the Elgato Video Capture output worked perfectly. The only complaint I had was that it doesn't give you the ability to directly edit the meta data description the way that EyeTV does. This is easily solved with the program MetaX which lets you update the description and also change the thumbnail... without reencoding the video file.So this is highly recommended!

After trying many other VHS transferring programs I found that this one ticks all the boxes for me.For once I can use the device on Mac or Windows PC.The quality is great and the transfer rate is fine as well.There have been no glitches and installing the device was a breeze.I would say you can't go wrong if you are looking for a VHS transfer program.Thanks Elgato!!

I have recorded all my VHS tapes on the computer. Software is simple to use and worth the investment. Would recommend.

Very easy to capture video. Includes RCA cables and S-video cable. Lacks video encoding options, otherwise would get 5 stars.

The Elgato video capture device was exactly what I needed to convert my treasured VHS tapes to my Mac. It is plug and play, very intuitive and simple. Highly recommended!

Extremely simple to connect and get to work: plug everything in (Self explanatory), install software, Put in VHS and click start. Once you're done, click done and you can open it in any program (iMovie, iTunes, etc.) and get to editing.Did exactly what the product described!!! My ONLY complaint is the size of the file- an hour of low definition video (due to my VHS's being from the 1980's-90's) are about a GIG of memory, but what else do you expect?No complaints. Fantastic.

This is a really great product the first thing is that it works and it is easy to setup. You can work from the computer screen I would recommend this product to every one who does video.
