I have scores of video 8 metallic tapes that I wanted to save, then edit and fix up and transfer to DVD's. Elgato Video Capture Device is a sleek and simple way to capture the video. They have simple editing tools for those who don't want to import their video into iMovie or other editing software, so you can have a finished product just by using the Elgato system. I highly recommend it.

Software is ok, easy to use. Works fine in Win7, can't get it to work in Win8. Video resolution is not adjustable in software and for my taste is too low for my home videos, but is just ok for TV vids. Final opinion, Easy to use, mp4 compression, fair image quality.

I purchased the Elgato Video Capture Device 10020840 for putting our home videos onto an external hard drive. The device was very easy to set-up and to use. I am very happy with the results. The device is small, not cumbersome at all, and very easy to set-up. I attached it to our VCR player and to my laptop, and sent the videos to the external hard drive that I had chosen. It has worked perfectly for my needs, and we are delighted to have all of our old videos now safely digitized.I would certainly recommend the Elgato Video Capture Device to friends and family, and indeed, have already.

This was very easy to use, my mom and I loved using it to put all of our old videos on our computer. The problem I noticed is that the sound and videos are off after recording with this device. They are not off on the tapes, but the recorded versions are. We need to see if there is a way to fix this problem, that is the only reason I haven't given this product 5 stars. Everything else was great!

This device works seamlessly to transfer video to the PC. The software and the device are very easy to use, and I was up and running very quickly. I purchased this device primarily to convert old VHS tapes to DVD. Unfortunately, I discovered that the output quality of the captured video is less than desired for this purpose. I'm sure the quality is quite adequate for YouTube videos and the like, but I was very disappointed with the DVDs I created from the captured video. I have returned this device in exchange for a different brand that promises higher resolution.

There is regular, digital image shake in the conversion process which I was not expecting. In case it was my Sony analogue camcorder playback that is causing this problem, I copied one of my videos into my analogue TV recorder first. I then attach elgato device to this and copied across to my Apple Macbook and there is no evidence of shake.So am disappointed with device as it means extra copying instead of direct copying which was the reason I bought it in the first place.

I finally have a device to capture video that doesn't freeze or with an audio out of sync, the quality of the image is not the greatest but it's ok and it fits perfectly the needs I had which are to transfer my tv shows to my mac.

When the firewire port on my Canon camcorder died,I needed to find a way to transfer lots of mini-DV tapes to my computer. I considered buying a used tape deck that would play both mini-DV and standard VHS (I have lots of those, too), but this device was a much less expensive option and seemed like a perfect solution. So far, I've transferred three 60-minute tapes without a hitch. I know some reviewers experienced frame-drop or audio issues during the transfer process, but that has not occurred with mine, so far.The Elgato software walks you through the connection process step-by-step so you can check to be sure you have video and audio before you start the transfer. If you have a current version of iMovie, your can import directly. Since I use an older version, I first saved my transfer file as a Quicktime movie, then imported the Quicktime into iMovie. It imports as one long clip and you can edit as usual.I would recommend this product to friends and family.

Software wouldn't load. Called the hep desk. Someone actually answered in five minutes. They could not help so elevated it. Received an e mail with instructions the next day. Sent them info required. Two days later received instructions on how to fix. It worked. I am very pleased with this purchase. Very simple to use. I am transferring old family VHS to DVD.

This really is a plug-in and play device. We haven't had any issues with the software or device at all on our Mac. You may need some other cables depending on which input device you use. We have an old Sony Digital 8 camcorder (TRV260) and it works great. We just had to buy an extra cable because both the Elgato capture device and the camcorder were both male, so we got a short female/female SVideo cable to hook them together.

A friend had an old VHS tape he wanted converted to a DVD. I bought this Elgato Video Capture Device for about the same price as getting one tape converted at a local photo store. It was quick and easy to do. When done, I used another program (iMovie on my Mac) to edit and add titles. In summary, a high quality produce.

Just received this today. I did get it to work on my Mac laptop, but not on my PC. Overall, I am happy. The reason I am happy with it is because I had taken a tape to Walgreens to be converted - I spent over $30 for 18 minutes of video - and wow - so disappointed! This little thing did a better job than they did. Why not five stars - did not work on PC. (With some assistance - I finally got it to work on my pc! - still 4 stars because it took some effort.)For the best quality transfer, dedicate your computer to the transfer. Impatience will cause frame skips. So far, I have transferred about three hours of video. All good - may need some tweaking, but my videos are old.

At first I thought the price way a little steep, but you always get what you pay for right? It should be easy to capture an analog signal from anywhere providing you have the right signal outputs. The software is simple to understand. At first, I tried to install it on my main PC but it had a problem and wouldn't complete the installation. After some thought I realized I had tried some other video capture software but deleted it, maybe it left a remnant somewhere that interfered with the new installation (Company Rivalry). I turned to my HTPC and it installed quickly and flawlessly and I was capturing video in five minutes. I captured video from a handheld video camera using Hi8MP tapes, copied TV episodes from you know where (Commercial set-top box recorders)

I bought the Elgato Video Capture device and attempted to create a DVD from some personal VHS tapes that I recorded as EP tapes. EVC worked fine in the preview, but as soon as I tried to Start Recording, it switched to SP mode. Of course, all the audio was garbled. I haven't found any other reviews that indicate this problem. I suspect that either everyone using EVC recorded their VHS tapes as SP speed and not any other speed. Or, everyone is bootlegging copyrighted tapes, which are all recorded at SP speed. In any case, my guess is that EVC software has the capability to record VHS EP tapes--it can show them in previews--but some programmer forgot to copy the code or refer to the function during the record. I'd guess that it would be an easy fix for Elgato programmers. If they only knew...Meanwhile, I'm sending mine back, unless somebody knows a trick to fix the problem. I'll wait a few days before sending it.

I have not been able to get this to work. Support wants my PC's data, which worries me. I have windows 7. That should be all they need to know. I hate sending downloads from my PC. Who knows what they are taking.

I wish I knew that this did not work on DVD/VCR combo tv's or I never would have purchased it. It only picks up the sound - no video. I spent almost $100 for nothing. Very disappointed.

What a waste of money!!!No where in the advertising does it mention that Windows XP is not supported, and if you go to their website they are just plain Rude. (by the way even if you have Windows & it might not work if you don't have the right chip. It also does'nt work on any other OS, tablets etc (except Mac)

If you're having the audio sync issue (where it gets more and more out of sync) try installing the driver and software from the CD. Years ago I purchased Roxio's USB capture but it just was no match to its own software, often crashing. With Elgato the quality is noticeably much better as well as design. The price is very good for the picture. Easy to install with software that makes editing easy. For the memories you'll save, it's well worth getting. I plan to put some of my videos on YouTube, to share with others forever.

I purchased this item when I bought my MAC which came with Snow Leopard. It worked fine and I created many DVDs with iMovie. When I upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8, I now find it is not compatible with Elgato. Elgato customer service is great to work with but hey could not resolve the conflict. I am currently trying to find a video capture that will work with Mountain Lion. No luck yet.

I think I paid too much. Of course, if you own a Mac computer, everyone thinks you're rich and they charge more for their product, but it does work and I'm glad I got it.

Well I got this last night, installed the software, connected all the wires, and within an hour I had my first VHS tape archived. I was worried cause a few said it doesn't work with windows 7, but it worked great, no issues or problems.The program allows you to trim the beginning/end of your movie before you save it, which is nice to get rid of the classic vhs static at the beginning of the tape, or what you taped over at one time! Hope you like it, I sure do so far. Great way to start backing up all your old VHS, Beta, or anything that you can hook to an RCA Cable.Enjoy!

I just recorded 26 tapes of home videos onto my MacBook.So simple, you just hit record, wait, choose the beginning and end of the video and save. It's that simple! Not only that but it records at MPEG4 which works great with all the iPlayers and saves disk space!
