The companies out there charge $20 per video to transfer. I had 100 videos. This made it so easy to do. I did it in days and for a fraction of the price. I definitely recommend this product.

I bought this product after I had bought a comparable product that broke. First, I bought Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac at Futureshop. The program was slow. One of my daughters bumped my computer and bent the adapter, which was like a cheap plastic flash drive. After that, the program crashed every time the recording was finishing up. There was no more VHS to DVD for Mac programs (Roxio or otherwise) in any of the Futureshops so I got a refund. Off to the internet for some research and found that Roxio and Elgato were really comparable, easy to use, and reasonably priced. BUT I must disagree that they are basically the same. Although they seem like they have the same buttons and quality of video, the Elgato IMHO is better. This adapter doesn't break with a bump. The program has fewer long wait periods so you don't have to babysit it for hours. I attached it to the same computer as before and it works beautifully.

This product is great for converted old vhs tapes plus the software allows for many other things. I was happy.

There were several possibilities of analog to digital converters that I considered. The cheapest were rated poorly for documentation, drivers, reliability, and only for WinPCs. I needed MacOS X compatibility. The Elgato model fit my requirements so I paid the higher price of this dongle style. (It also claimed to work with Win7.)Setup on my Mac was easy and I transferred over 30 VHS-C tapes without a failure. I realize that a converted video can not be expected to better than the original quality but I was disappointed by the output. The best bitrate achieved was 1635kbps, which is not great for resolution and the resulting video is blocky and pixelated, especially noticeable at full screen. I tried H264 and MPEG4 codecs without seeing any difference. I tried playing from both the camera S-Video jack and a 4-head hi-fi VCR deck. Although the original camera tapes are soft sharpness, they display well on a large screen TV. The digital versions are not worth watching above standard VGA 640x480 on a computer.I tested recording cable TV to computer via a VCR, and again the picture quality is low.With hindsight I would now choose a better transcoder like one of the Canopus models, for hopefully higher bitrates. For my home video purposes the goal of archiving video from tape to disk was achieved but the output is not worth spending time to edit for viewing on a TV.I did not need the included SCART connector or composite cables. Plan on having plenty of time to play through home videos; mine needed monitoring for tracking and frame drops, and lots of disk space for storage and any editing.

I bought this recently to move our VHS tapes to DVD format and to preserve them before they degraded too much. I am using this with a DVD/VHS combo and a MacBook Pro. I had hubby hook everything up and I went to work. It's pretty simple and I love that I can mute the sound as the playback is going. I also like that I can set a time to end the recording. I'm now burning DVD's of the movies as well as keeping them on a back up hard drive.Excellent product, very happy with it!

This simple little device works perfectly. Easy to operate, simple, a real no-brainer to use. I got it all right on the first try and was able to transfer stuff perfectly. All of computer-life should be this easy.

The Elgato capture device works great, but be aware that after you get your home movies into digitized form, there are still hours ahead with iMovie and iDVD to burn onto playable disks!

This thing uses your CPU for processing instead of having its own on-board hardware. As a result, it was unusable on my 3 year old laptop. I returned it. This should have been disclosed by Amazon.

Pro: Software was easy to install. Easy to use. Small in size. Performed as expected.Con: Limited abilities for adjustments; however, not required for what was needed.

This was a perfect solution for me as I was trying to transfer old 8 mm tape and old VHS to hard drive before losing them forever. With this software and cables it was no problem to transfer than move to iMovie for completion.

The Elgato video to USB capture device can be used ONLY for direct recording to file through its own bundled application. It does this very well. But it cannot be used as an independent video capture for other applications. I purchased this as recommended by others for the purpose of streaming video to Ustream. However, it does not appear as a USB video capture device in the list of available devices in the Ustream Producer application. The only way I was able to use it was to also install Cam Twist and select the viewing area in the Elgato app. Trying to position all three apps on the screen at the same time makes this a much less than usefull solution. And there is absolutely no way you can install more than one Elgato capture for multiple camera selection.

Ordered this to upload stuff to YouTube after importing to my MacBook Pro (you don't have to upload). Super simple and works just as you would expect it to. Absolutely no problems. It may cost just a little more than some others, but it works right out of the box, just install supplied software. Note: this will not do hi-def, but you already knew that. Shopping with amazon was easy as always and product arrived within a week. Technical note: when capturing content, hit the record button a second or two before pressing play on your source, you can always trim any excess of at the end. I found that if you hit the record button and press play on your source too quickly, you may clip off the very beginning of your content.

Perfect. Like everything Elgato makes. Flawless. Not a single glitch, flaw, or interface problem. But then, I never expected less from Elgato (Funny name for a Spanish speaking person)

I used Elgato with my iMac; set-up was very easy, and I converted close to 100 VHS tapes to mp4 format and then to DVDs without any problems. The conversion was very easy, just run the tape, trim at the end and voila, you have the content on your computer.

Works as described. I transferred a bunch of videos to DVD's for my girlfriend's School and recorded a Memorial service from small Sony video camera. Worked as advertised.

works great and is easy - may be trouble with some older home videos though. otherwise it turnds VHS to MP4s easily

This is the worst product ever in won't work on windows 7. seriously don't wast you hard earned money on this the video is lagging so bad and so is the audio. It says on my laptop can't initialize device and to check software and driver. I called them and nobody answered at 3:00 pm on Thursday.

The three RCA plugs of the Elgato easily attach to a VCR; the other end of the cable is simply plugged into a USB port. There are no clear instructions on how to start recording from the VCR. It took me a little time to figure out how to use the control panel which appears on the computer screen, but after a few false starts it all came easy. The quality of the image and the sound is extremely good.

Very simple, analog to digital conversion device and software. I could not be happier with this purchase, it exceeded my expectations.

I have to say it's refreshing to order a product and find it works perfectly as advertised. Elgato's video capture gives a super picture and crisp sound. It's as user-friendly as could be. I've had a few issues with static sound and wobbly picture but this is attributable to the videos themselves, not the capture device. I highly recommend this product to anyone who's looking to digitize their VHS library. It's worth the money.

works very well on my macbook. easy to use. syncs into imovie very well. copies onto itunes and my ipod touch.

All I wanted was the ability to upload all my old vhs to the internet. It was very easy , and the program that came with it was simple.
