I choose the Elgato Video Capture Device due to the high ratings it received. Yes, it was easy to set up, and it worked OK during the first two hours of use. Then, the video portion started to get flacky with white noise and pooped out entirely after two and one-half hours. Just to be sure the problem did not lay elsewhere, I tried it with two other computers, another set of cables, various tapes, and with both a VCR and camcorder as the playback source for the video cassette. I could see the video playback through the camcorder viewfinder, so the video did in fact exist. Thanks to Amazon for a simple no hassles return policy.As a side note, if you are using a Windows-base computer, you will need to purchase additional software to convert the generated Quick Times video files to DVDs that can be read by most DVD players. If you try try converting the Quicktime MPEGS using standard MS software that ships with Windows 7 Home Edition, the sound will go out of sync.

I bought this hoping it would work because I have a lot of old VHS tapes that I wanted to change to DVDs. Unfortunately, it didn't work well. I had read a number of reviews on it on various websites some good, most not good but I decided to take a chance. I use a Mac computer with 10.8 operating system, which is what they recommend. The problem is the sound. The picture was perfect, in fact it was better that the original tape. But the sound kept missing words from time to time. I tried various things and the Elgato support team was reasonably good with their suggestions, but nothing worked so I sent the unit back and got a refund. (That why I love Amazon.com) I then did what I should have done. I bought the Magnavox VHS/DVD player/recorder. I got a refubished unit through Amazon for $89.00, which works perfectly. You just put in your VHS and blank DVD push the Dubbing button and it does the rest. If you are thinking about the Elgato product, I suggest you consider the Magnavox instead.

The Elgato Video Capture Device arrived in a timely manner. The instructions for loading software were clear. The actual procedure for converting my VHS tapes to DVD's was rather cloudy. Possibly because Apple has various software configurations in their computers. I did, however, figure it out. I had 17 2hr. VHS tapes to convert and it took a lot of time to do it since it all has to be done in real time. The finished product on the DVD's is fuzzy. Just not quite in focus. I suppose this is because I was converting analog to digital. Also, I didn't have an S-video output on my tape player which may have caused some problems with clarity. Other than that, the product performed well. It is the only one I could find that would work with a Mac.

Bought the item with high hopes, but didn't work. Be forewarned, the software's instructions state that a minimum of 2.4 GHz is required, whereas on Amazon's webpage it states 2.0 GHz is the minimum needed. My laptop has 2.19 GHz. So it's possible that my computer is not strong enough, but when I loaded it on another, stronger laptop, the computer did not acknowledge when I plugged in the USB cable. Thinking it may have trouble with its USB ports, I plugged in a flash drive, which it recognized. Don't know why that computer wouldn't work either. Overall, it's too bad, since I want to convert a bunch of home movies to DVD and a lot of other people had no problem. Amazon needs to update the details to reflect the true system requirements.

I'm not sure how this product has such glowing reviews. Upon initial inspection, I thought it was great too, until I actually viewed the footage it produced. Nearly 80% of the video was out of sync with the audio. I even went through great lengths to prevent this from happening (recording in 10 minute increments), all to no avail.The only positive thing I can say is that it is easy to use. But if the end result is out-of-sync audio, well then, it's not really worth one dollar, much less the full price tag. I will be returning this item.FYI, if your curious to my PC specs, they exceed the minimum requirements: 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7 64 bit.Bottom line, if you're willing to re-record VHS tapes around 5-10 times just to get in-sync audio, then this is the product for you! If you have little patience for companies wasting your money, then I'd avoid this one.

I looked at many reviews of different digital capture devices that were much cheaper, but I was scared off the bad reviews. When I read about Elgato I thought I would give it a try because it was one that had Mac software included. The software was easy to install and hook up to my video play back devices was simple. There were just a few simple steps in the software to start recording and that was it. I recorded two one and a half hour movies with this device and there was no audio lag or any problems with the picture. I couldn't be happier with this purchase!

The only downside to this device and the process in general is that you have to copy the films in real time. It's to be expected, really - there's no other good way to copy a VHS tape at home - and if you buy this you're probably planning to watch the tapes anyhow. If you're doing it for a family friend, however, it's good that you can set some auto-limits on the transfer program and walk away.The device: small, easy to useThe software: works well. Well what can i say. I have atleast 70-90 home video's which were all deteriorating at a slow and steady rate. I tried out multiple video capture devices (which i wont name) and none of them worked. I was reluctant to spend $100.00 plus on the Elgato Video capture because i thought it mightn't work but Im glad i risked it. This is the best product i have used to capture old home video's from Camcorders, Dv tape and Recorder tapes it has great video and audio quality and doesnt jump/skip bits of the video as some people have said.\. I will recommened this to anyone and everyone that needs to save some old home videos.

So I used this product for just about a week. It worked fine. There were some occasions where it wouldn't immediately recognize the video source and then I would unplug and replug and everything would work fine. Once I digitized a video, I was given very limited editing options. Basically I can trim the beginning and the end and then submit it to Youtube or save it (amongst a couple other choices which I no longer remember.)This lasted for a week and after that I was never able to get the product to work again. I tried different vhs, different source, restarting, shutting down and it would not recognize anything. I've initiated an exchange with amazon, which I must say, runs fairly smoothly.I'll add to this review once I test out the replacement device.

My wife likes to record baking shows from our TV provider service and save them onto the provided DVR. She had 45 hours worth saved over many years and so I decided to try and save it all somewhere else. These DVR's are a PITA as far as trying to plug in an external drive and moving stuff over.This item by far is the easiest option. It takes some time, but it is easy. Install software on laptop, plug USB into laptop, plug RCA cables (I had Monster brand) into the Elgato unit on one side and into the RCA jacks OUT port on back of DVR. Follow the steps in the software program which is very easy. Done.The sound quality and picture quality is clear, not a single hint of anything less than what it looked like originally. AwesomeIf you want to record your saved shows you will have to watch them, or set it up on a spare TV that has access to your shows and visit the laptop every 30 min or 1 hour to crop and save. Then start another recording. BTW, it has a timer setup so you start it and it will stop after 30, 60 min plus a buffer you set. Then you can crop it to rid of what you may not want.I love the little device. Easy and does what I want.

Typical of low and mid-range consumer capture devices, this simply digitises the signal and passes it through to your computer to do the processing/conversion.I tried this on three different machines - two windows 7 builds with different codecs and a stock macbook pro. With each capture, the audio lost sync on any video over 10 minutes in length.Do yourself a favour and stop messing about with the sub-$100 solutions - they're pretty much all alike. Jump up to the next level and grab something like the Canopus ADVC110 for reliable video capture.

I have a couple of hundred hours of professionally useful 8mm dv tapes recorded over 20 years that have just been sitting in the closet unused because it's been too much trouble to set everything up to look at one or two, and transferring them to a hard drive at 12gb/hour would take up too much space. I'm using the Elgato device to digitize them as h.264 mp4 files and it's working smoothly. I leave the camera hooked to the computer and switch tapes when it's convenient to do so. The Elgato's setting to automatically stop recording after a fixed period of time makes it possible to put a tape in before I go to bed and know that the recording will shut off when it's done.I've had Elgato's EyeTv for several years and have used it in the past to digitize dv tapes. But it only records in MPEG 1 or 2 format, requiring a separate step to convert to mp4. That's fine for an occasional tape, but the direct conversion to mp4 that this device provides is certainly worthwhile for larger projects.

i bought this product after reading the supposed glowing reviews; received it, installed the software, and tested it. i cannot in all honestly believe that the reviews are genuine. perhaps the people who gave it glowing reviews had low expectations? that would be the most generous explanation. is it possible that someone connected to the product made up many of the reviews found here? IF so, it's a sad situation that i hope amazon will try to correct. one of the reasons i often buy through amazon is because of what i believed were reliable and truthful reviews by people who actually bought the product. at any rate, in my opinion, the quality of the resulting digital file is mediocre at best. it's certainly not worth the money. to their credit, amazon will allow me to return the product but i'm posting this with the hope of warning other potential customers. i am certainly not insisting that people not buy this product. i just don't recommend it. what i do recommend is that people look at the critical reviews and think before you buy.personally, i plan to buy an internal video capture card and digitize my mini DV tapes that way.good luck in your search.

After many years of evaluating ways I could get my old tapes digitized, I finally made a move and purchased the Elgato unit. I was never comfortable handing over my precious family memories to someone else to convert, fearing that I would not see them again. I very easily and successfully converted old VHS, Hi8, and mini cassette videos directly onto my computer. Now I can quickly scan them to find important clips and edit them through imovie. I couldn't be happier!

I researched several devices before spending my money on this one. I am using a fairly new HP computer (with Windows 7)to capture home movies of my daughter. The problem is the freezing. Several times during the process (VHS or MiniDV transfer) the capture process will freeze for a few seconds before resuming, kind of like it is having to rebuffer to catch up. It did the same thing on my laptop, so I know it is not the computer.This flaw will cause me to have to go back and edit out parts or re-capture to complete the tapes. I was hoping for a one stop process to get this done, but that will not happen.

I have tried this on 2 PCs running Win7 and could only get it to start on one of them. While recording from an old VHS tape in a VCR the display showed a choppy sound and video display, but after recording for awhile I stopped it to test out the file created. Plays back way too fast with distorted sound. Benn troubleshooting all day and no easy answers. So I now have doubts that the result will ever play on my iPod and reside on a DVD for the future. Sigh. I'm a software engineer, and not bad at troubleshooting installs Seems like getting a single player to play back the video correctly would not even be a good result, but it might confirm that the product at least works. Still undecided that it even works. And need it to run on the other PC as well. Sorry, but it's looking like a thumbs down for this!

As a Mac user, I had wasted my money on a much cheaper contraption that turned out not to communicate with my computer. So, sure, you can get cheaper products that may or may not work and may take a lot of figuring out if they do, but the Elgato system is a model of simplicity. It has clear, uncomplicated directions and completes a good digital file of your VHS tape in just a few steps that are easy and intuitive to complete. You can monitor the recording process right on your computer, so you don't even need the VCR to be attached to your TV. Sometime after the film ends, you just stop the recording, set the beginning and ending points of the resulting video (easily trimming it if you accidentally let it keep recording after the end of the movie, for example), and save the file to your computer. Super easy and reliable. A very well-made product.

I used this to capture an old VCR table from an external VCR to a desktop PC running Windows 7 64 bit. It gets very high ease-of-use marks, very simple to install and capture a video.However I found the video quality to be lacking, particularly in my situation of a "last chance" to capture old family VCR recordings to digital for posterity. I ended up using a Canopus ADVC-300 (and Sony Vegas) to capture better quality videos, but that's all much more complex and expensive than the Elgato.So if quick, easy and inexpensive is your goal, the Elgato is a great choice; if highest quality capture is critical, then other solutions may be preferred.

The majority of video transfer devices are made with PC software in mind (at least when I was looking). When I came across this device I was very surprised. Easy instal, clean interface (just like all things Mac). It was very easy to use and transfer the information once I got the hang of what I needed to do. It took me about 10 minutes of just playing around with the software/hardware to get a system down (I don't like reading the instructions). A definite buy if you are wanting to transfer your old home videos into a more modern format.

Device works great. Only CON was that the Capture Software version delivered with my device would have an error when it was completing the capture of the MP4 file. The software would display an error msg and I was not able to access or view the resulting MP4 file with any software. I went to the Elgato support website and downloaded the previous version of the software and it works great. Using my Elgato Video Capture Device on Windows 8 Professional.

i bought this to transfer my 8mm and vhs tapes. and while it does an ok job of transfering video that doesnt have alot of action, it seems to pick up any little pertabation when there is some tape shake. So if you are doing say an analog transfer from the tape to a dvd, this doesnt show up but for some reason going through the a/d conversion doesnt like this. I am not sure why and i have plenty of fire power on teh computer i have. So i know its not that. and this happens on both vhs and on 8mm. like i said if its simple family videos you are probably fine assuming you dont mind that the video is compressed a bit. If you are a video phile then i would say you may want something else. I sure wish i knew what to recommend.

This small piece of hardware and the enclosed software is easy to use and understand.Pop in an old VHS tape, turn on the VCR, plug-in the RCA cables to the VCR and the USB to the computer.Open the Elgato video capture software and follow the simple onscreen instructions.The only way it could be easier (read lazy) is to have someone else do it for you!Great product.

I purchased this to transfer old home videos from VHS > electronic files. This was a piece of cake to use. Instructional CD included. Did not change or alter the quality. It is a timely process, though. The VHS tapes have to play through their entirety while the device essentially records the content and creates a file. But, thus is the world of old vs new technology.Much cheaper than having the job professionally done, and now I can have all of my favorite memories at the click of a button!

I was looking for a way to copy all my old VCR tapes of family events that were slowly deteriorating on the magnetic media. This unit lets me capture the video at the best possible quality via S-Video. I have not noticed any dropped frames in the capture. Operation is simple and it easily goes to iTunes and Apple TV links it to my flat screen for viewing.
