After reviewing available software, I made a decision to go with Elgato. I placed my order and received it in a very timely manner; and after installing on my Mac I was off and running. Really very simple to use, and the quality of the transfers to my computer were very good. In fact so good that it was merely dependent on the quality of the VHS tape I was using that determined the end quality of the extracted video. I've already began processing those to DVD and couldn't be more pleased. This is a really inexpensive way to save the history that was otherwise going to be lost on my old VHS tapes. I am very happy to recommend Elgato Video Capture.

I purchased this product to help convert my 300 VHS collection to digital. So far the product works as described. The video quality isn't as good as having DVD but it does the job. This will come in handy for any home video I have as well. I would recommend this for anyone who owns a Mac.

Hello all,I've read several reviews about this product and all I can say is I think it is great.The unit and software were very easy to setup and install on my 3 year old Mac Book Prorunning Snow Leopard. I've imported from a VCR, a VHS Video Camcorder, a DVR device andmy Cable DVR box. The process is effortless and after importing, I load the file into iMovie 11or Adobe Premier Elements 9 and go do my video editting thing. It really is quite simple.I guess one con would be to be able to resize the video preview window when importing but thatis more of a wish item then a criticism.Bottom line that this is a great device for converting old analag video from mulitple sourcesinto a digital format for use with todays video editting/production software.Good luck and have fun!!!

Very Happy With this product. Trying to find something that I could transfer vhs to edit using Final Cut Pro was a difficult mission. This product was so easy to use. The only thing they don't tell you, is that if you want to edit your transfer using final cut you have to convert all your footage, bc everything will look choppy. But I found a product online for $40 that is really easy to use and worked great! (wondershare Video converter)

I've been in the hobby of video capture for years. More so with window based pc's. This little gadget for my new iMac was child-simple to setup and use. Captures perfect video with no audio/video sync issues (like I had on a pc with other type items). I can now easily convert all my family VCR tapes to iMovie and iTunes compatible video. This product works great. I would say this is a MUST HAVE for any and every iMac user. Great price and comes with great easy to use but powerful mac software. I ordered this from Amazon because I really thought this would not work and i could return it. Well.... I am NOT retuning this!!!! I also captured an old copy protected VCR tape, with no issues. Great video quality. Just perfect!!!

Low cost easy way to transfer VHS tapes to computer. It really is a piece of cake to use on my Mac desktop. Can now get rid of the old tapes and can share videos with my kids on Apple TV.

I am using an iMac 3 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM. The software is very easy to use. Digital video quality matches the quality of the video tape. I have had no issues with the product, no degradation in quality. This is exactly what I wanted to digitalize my old VHS home movies.Here is a helpful hint. I first tried playing back a recording via my VHS video recorder. I found the resulting color balance a bit off with a reddish tint. I then tried playing the recording back via a standard VHS player. Huge difference! Color balance using the VHS player was right on. Of course, this color balance problem has nothing to do with the Elgato product. But, it does show that not all playback devices are created equal.

Purchased on 10/01/10, used consistently for about 1 month (about 20-30 VHS tapes of home video converted), worked flawlessly, with pretty good video quality.I was done with most of my family videos, and had only a few stragglers that I intended to convert this month. Connected device: busted. It hooks up and is recognized, but about 1-5 minutes into capturing video, it loses its connection and the software thinks the video feed is over and automatically closed the file.For the past 2 weeks, it has been reliably unreliable: always the same issue, never able to function for more than 5 minutes.I contacted Elgato for an RMA. Looking into more reliable products. Anyone have any suggestions?

I ordered this to replace an older video capture device for my Mac. The software is easy to use and walks you through the process. I like the mini display the software launches so you don't need to hook up the VCR to your TV to see what's happening. if I could improve on the product, I'd have it include something to detect when an old VHS tape starts to jump or lose tracking and either alert the user or compensate.

This product gave me exactly what I wanted. I am able to capture video from a VHS to my computer and its incredibly straight forward and easy to do. the quality of the video is just as good as the quality from the source. I'm converting home movies from almost 30 years ago and the quality is just as good as watching it on the VCR. I do agree that an input for stereo sound would be better but the sound quality is not jeopardized without it. Never experienced any choppy video like other reviews have said. Maybe you need a faster computer? I am very pleased with my purchase and have already spent hours converting!!! I would definitely suggest this product if you are using it to convert VHS into mp4s. Absolutely worth the money!!

It doesn't get any easier than this. Just drag the application file from the disc to the MAC hard drive, plug in the hardware and start transferring tape to the computer. You can trim the video before it is saved so it is easy to start/stop and capture what you want. There are times when the signal doesn't come through as it should but that is easily fixed by going back and recording more than what is needed. Then trim the excess before saving it. Highly recommended.

I read multiple reviews of less expensive systems to transfer old 8mm video tapes to DVD and was spooked by the claims of having to go to the web to search for drivers and having problems with dropped frames, etc. This Elgato solution is just plain easy. I got it today, installed the software, connected up my really old 8mm video camera and was recording within minutes and at the end, I had several automatic options including edit in iMovie which is what I did and from there "Share to iDVD" converted it to a format for recording to a DVD and "Voila!" - done.I don't have time to fool around with fixing glitches so this was perfect.I'm running Mac OS 10.6.5.

I have converted about ten 8mm tapes so far, and it has been very easy to use on my Mac. I can open the videos for editing in imovie right after converting. I would suggest this to anyone with a Mac!!

(I'm using this product on a Mac, and I assume all the features I am referencing carry over to Windows.) If you're just looking for a product to digitize your VHS tapes, don't go for the fancy TV tuners - this product does exactly what you need without a lot of fuss. The trim option will save you oodles of time - it means you don't have to be constantly watching your computer, waiting for the moment when the VHS stops to stop the capture. There are a few video adjustment options in the preferences pane and a decibel level adjustment as well.

Excellent product!!! Installation on my iMac was a snap and everything works like described. Being recording from vcr tapes for the last several weeks and have had no problems. Great video quality and sound.

Purchased this to transfer some of our old home movies onto my iMac and so far its been great! Easy to use but still seems to have a good number of features that have come in handy.

I bought this product to save all of my familys vhs videos onto dvd. I bought the Mac version. The installation was simple. The instructions were simple. My first try worked just as i wanted it to. I have had a great time recording our old movies. I am able to make additional copies for different family members and they are thrilled. It is a great program and i am recommending it to friends as we speak.

If you want a product that simply transfers video and you dont really care about diminished resolution this is perfect. I was expecting the quality to be the same as or nearly the same what is captured on the original tape. Not even close. These are memories I'm trying to preserve. Unfortunately producing Youtube quality videos is not what I was looking for. I would think Elgato would be a little clearer stating what the ultimate expectations for this product truly are.

I just watched my son rolling down a grassy hill when he was 2. He's 14 now. I would pay the money all over again if I had to, and I have another 10 tapes from my old video camera to watch and download. No more time for this review, I'm going to go relive some more old memories.

This product is OK. I have a Mac Powerbook, but frequently use on a MacBook Air. Issues: I find that the program will quit half way through a video. Also, if you start recording early, say because the video is recorded on the first possible moment of the tape, the program will quit prior to getting to your video. Is it so bad that i'm tossing it in the garbage and buying another? No. I'm just putting up with the issues and redoing the occasional tape. But jeez, it sure could be better.

It just works! I am using this on my MacBook.....It couldn't be any easier. Just plug the RCA cords in an output of your VCR and the USB connector into your Mac (or PC supposedly). Start your VCR and press record on the screen. Your Mac records as much of the VHS video you want...You can then instantly transfer it to iTunes or iMovie and watch it on your TV using Apple TV if you want to. The quality of the video is actually better than original (I know, not possible) due to the digital filters removing the "fuss" from the VHS tape. I am using it to convert all mine and my family's old VHS tapes.......love it.
