I, like you, have many videos that have been sitting in a box in a closet. They are there because using a vhs is pain once you get used to jumping around on a DVD. I have wanted to transfer my videos for many years now but I finally got serious, did my research and purchased the Elgato Video Capture. I couldn't be more thrilled. If you are looking for an easy to use video capture device look no more.The best part is the software. Once you plug in the vcr to the Elgato device and then attach to your usb port the software does the rest. There are just a few steps and a few options to record your video and at the end it gives you the option to trim the unwanted pieces off the final file. One of my favorite options is the automatically stop recording after a certain amount of time. For movies that would be 90 or 120 minutes. That lets you set it and forget it without using up all your hard drive space.In a nutshell this product is easy to use, works the first time and frees up storage space in your closet when you get rid of all those vhs tapes.

Ran video through it and it worked great the first time. No flaws in the video. I used it with my original Macbook 1st gen white laptop.

I tried several other rca video capture devices, and this one is by far the best. I use it on a 15" intel macbook that is an older model and it still works great. After searching for a product to accomplish the task of transferring years of VHS video tapes to digital format, I found this product at Amazon.com. Not only was the cost significantly lower than other products; this is very simple to use, straightforward, and user friendly.We are very pleased with the results of our transferred tapes, and now we have them saved in a much more durable format.

I read the reviews for a number of the Elgato products and finally settled on this one. It is very easy to set up and use. Within a couple of minutes, I have the video from my Dish DVR on my MacBook Pro and I can either import it into iMovie for editing or dump into a .mpeg file. This has to be one of the easiest pieces of hardware/software I've ever set up.

This is a basic device which can be used to import video. It can not do live streaming or any other advanced feature. I bought it to see if I could get any live stream software to work with it but on a Mac it will only use the El Gato software for video import which was a little disappointing. If you need a live stream input then you should get the Canopus units which have firewire.

If you're looking to find a live capture solution for MacOSX that's compatible with Processing, openFrameworks, or ... even Quicktime, DO NOT buy this product. The drivers aren't recognized by Quicktime's capture framework so you can forget about using this to digitize your analog infrared camera and access it through code. The Elgato doesn't even show up as a device. In Quicktime!The device does come with the usual consumer-grade shovelware for "digitizing your collection of VHS tapes". If that's what you want, then fine. Though you should be aware that the quality it produces is quite poor, with heavy blocking artifacts from the H264 compression.

I ordered this product for the purpose of converting VHS and other analog sources to digital. I will say that this was very easy to use and I found the software to be intuitive and straightforward. After importing several test videos, I noticed the same thing that other reviewers have mentioned, which is the occasional dropped frame. I would not say this is a severe problem, but it did bother me enough that I returned it in favor of a hardware based A/D converter, the Canopus 77010138100 ADVC-55 A/d Converter External, which worked much better for me. I was using this with an iMac 2.4 GHz dual core Intel processor and 2 GB of ram, so I don't think processing power was an issue.For someone who is not concerned with the rare dropped frame in their video, this is a great deal. If you want perfect reproduction, you may want to pay the extra $80 for the better device.

Great product - very east to use. Nice option to trim captured video before exporting. Good amount of choices for export. Used on mac laptop with no problems whatsoever.

This is a usb device that slides into a port on the mac. The software takes you through each video capture step by step. Prior to recording (I'm digitizing vhs videotapes) you get a good look at image quality and confirm that the sound is working, too. I usually have to adjust the tracking on my old vcr to get the best possible playback. You use the controls on your vcr for that.Just name the file, optionally click a box for recording duration, and away you go. When you are done, you can trim what you don't want from the beginning and end of the file.Then the software asks what you want to do with the file. I run mine through imovie, but there are other choices, too. Then it works some voodoo on the file and you're done.Our new macbook pro has plenty of processor power to take the incoming video and audio streams without any hiccups. This is a great little accessory for a mac that lets you take video that you used to watch and enjoy and put it in a new and easily editable digital video format.The old tapes look great on the ipod touch screen and not too bad on the macbook.

Elgato video capture is a simple device to use. The software is easy and immediate to understand.Unfortunately after long discussions with Elgato Technical support I have concluded that the sotware/hardware has still some basic problems that can't be solved without a major modification of the software/hardware.For low quality video the quality of results is not acceptable. The decoded video shows continuous changes in luminosity that are purely linked to the Elgato system. Connecting the exit of the video camera to a monitor no problem can be seen.The same problems occur using the Elgato system in different computers (so it is not linked to the perfomance of the computer).No solution has been given by Elgato Technical Support after several movie examples have been shipped to them. The only suggestion is to return the device. Unfortunately the device in more than one month old so no way to get it back. And local dealers (Germany) do not see big problems as in some tapes the system works!I think that it is mostly a software problem that does not occur if you use high quality s-Video input. Unfortunately this device has been thought to import old tapes and videos so I would say that unless some improvements are introduced by Elgato this makes this device useless for importing old movies.

Elgato worked great right out of the box and with iMovie you can edit those boring old videos of the kids down to a watchable length

I want to convert some long six hour VHS tapes BUT the software timer wont allow me to set a custom or 6 hour timer so I have to monitor the recording also and a big problem for me is the output MP4 does NOT play back on a PS3 ! the sound works but the picture is black..... imagine dubbing a bunch of six hour tapes just to discover your media server (ps3) will not play back the file.... IF they ever fix the problem you will need to reconvert the tape again! I posted the problem on their support forum and still no response about it... you would think with a new product they would want user feedback and acknowledge a fix to the problem. The product itself is clean and very simple to use , the software for it needs work... I will update this review if things are fixed.UPDATE(7/31/09): Still does not work with the PS3 and elgato may never make it work because that would be a " feature " . Timer functions have not been addressed either. Basically this product gets very little software support or attention from elgato.... with MILLIONS of PS3's hooked to HD tv's you would think you would want your MP4's to play on them.zero stars until this is fixed.UPDATE(9/20/09): Still does NOT work with the PS3 ! un frickin real.UPDATE(11/29/09): Still NO PS3 support! - and ElGato removed me from their forums because of this review. Instead of fixing the product they delete the poster who brought it to light --- very laughable..... ZERO STARS for this LEMON of a product and I no longer trust ElGato as a vendor.

This product does a superb job of importing (capture). The software is easy to install and use. It works flawless. I selected this product after reading some other reviews of other products and was scared off of those to this Elgato. I imported old VHS,VHS-C, & Hi-8 into the provided software and then exported over to iMovie and it has ALWAYS worked. You can't beat this product for reliability.

Like most people, I bought the Elgato Video Capture to digitize my analog family video tapes before they turned to dust. In three words "it simply works". I have digitized approximately 18 hours of tapes so far without any problems, without any dropped frames, and the picture quality is as good as the original tapes. The process is straight forward -- load the software, connect the camcorder to the capture device, launch the software (it will check for audio and video automatically). I have not tried saving for YouTube or iPod, but I do save for editing using iMovie and the process is just one mouse click after the video has been digitized. The product is just as promised no complications ease of use, great tool to give new life to old tape based v?deos.

The video and audio quality of this device are just fine. It works for its intended audience, which is people capturing movies or analog camcorders.But beware if you're buying this device for use in a workflow that requires you automate it with AppleScript. The software Elgato ships with the device is very good, but it is NOT AppleScriptable. Which means you have to control it manually. This is probably fine for 95% of all users, but for the 5% that need it, it's a crucial flaw.Plus, this is NOT a standard QuickTime video input device; you have to use Elgato software; other QuickTime software doesn't see the device.If you want a more pro-level capture box, check out the Canopus ADVC110. More expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I have to agree with the reviewers who declare this device not-ready-for-prime-time. It may be of some value for some, to save very valuable material, but it doesn't do a very good job of converting VCR-made or commercially-made videos into "real-time" images. A case in point: I have in-car videos from my race car, made with an analog recorder in 2001-2005. I had copied these to videotape in my VCR. When I try to record these with the Video Capture, the image appears jerky (like skipping frames?) as you watch the on-screen recording monitor. (merely playing the VCR output - without recording - is smooth) After you stop, and the program converts and saves the video, then play the result, the problem appears. The resulting video is played back at nearly twice the normal speed because about half the original material is missing. You don't see a gap; the images are just faster. Example: My race car lap times, that should have been about 2 minutes and 30 seconds, are 1:25 in the video. Also, skipping information in the original during recording also results in muddy audio. Voices speaking are barely understandable.If real-time playback is your object, this is not the product you want. It might do OK for slow-moving scenery. The hardware is super simple is hook up and the software works just as advertized. On my MBP 2.66 GHz C2D, there are no lost frames and the direct conversion to 16:9 aspect ratio works perfectly and produces SD quality video that is clear and the sound tracks perfectly. The transfer to iMovie is also flawless.JB

This set up is really easy and I was hopeful that I would be able to convert all my VHS tapes to digital. After converting one VHS tape (my wedding video) I stop. It was very grainy, and lowered the quality of the tape dramatically. While is did do as promised the quality was horrible, I would not use this again. Still looking for something better.

I recently purchase this several weeks ago under the seller of Amazon. They shipped out my product by the next day on the shipment rate of 1 day which is nice. I track my product by usps service which is great. The product arrive my home in a well mannner package. the product itself and the product is safe and brand new. no damages. The product works perfectly. Amazon should have their products packaged thier products like that always. Their service is excellent as well of their products in a safe packaged manner. I give my review a 10 of 10 or so called 5 of 5.

I read the reviews here and went ahead with my purchase anyway. I'm glad I did.It couldn't be any more simple to record from an analog source to the Mac. My project is converting some old VHS home movies to digital videos. I wanted to try a test before I jumped into the real projects, so I decided to encode a small section of a VHS tape purchased around 1992.I popped the software disc into my laptop and it installed in a few minutes. When finished, I launched the application and it presented me with a screen to test the video signal. I plugged in both ends of the device and I saw what was playing on my VCR instantly. The next screen made sure I had audio. Once set-up was out of the way, it was off to the races. I tested with a 10 minute section of the video and the software stopped recording exactly when I told it to.I wanted to address the "issue" the other reviewers mistakenly have with this product not outputting H.264. The first video I captured has a file extension of ".mp4" and the description is "MPEG-4 Movie" in Finder. When I right-clicked and chose Get Info on the file, under Codecs, I see H.264, AAC listed. This proves H.264 encoding works with this product. I request the reviewers who said this is not working do the same and report the results.Bottom line, this is a very simple to use product and I am looking forward to using it to convert those old movies from VHS. MUST BUY.

Bought the Elgato Video Capture Device from Amazon primarily to pull 8mm video from my old non-digital camcorder into an iMac PC for editing purposes and to put the old family videos on DVD -- that old 8mm camcorder won't keep running forever! The Elgato device works great -- setup was a breeze, just pop the included DVD into the drive and it's ready to use in 3 minutes. Hookup to my camcorder was simple, with step-by-step directions for video, audio, etc. The included software lets you ready the captured video for iMovie on the Mac, or for uploading to YouTube if that's what you prefer. All in all, a very cool, intuitive way to get analog video from various sources into your PC for editing or archiving. Only quibble I have with it is that it ships with scant documentation, but once you use it a while, it seems sufficiently intuitive that you barely miss it. Glad I bought it.
