If you're like me, I have way too many old VHS tapes that I want to convert to DVD, but haven't found sofware/hardware combination that is easy to use, and does a great job.... Well, I've solved that problem with Elgato's Video Capture, it's so easy to use and understand. This company comprehends what we want and gives it to us. Yea.Ok, all I need to do was first install the supplied software, hook up my VHS player with the included cables, and then read the well written instructions by Elgato. Sound easy, it is.I looked up the first tape I wanted to do, and it had the time of it, so I set that up, All of the steps were made even easier with the step by step video/slide training on Elgato's site. Each step showed what I was to do, cables, plugs, settings, all of it there.So once I made my first DVD from VHS, I was able to trim the boring stuff at either end, good idea. Then I was asked if I wanted to:Play with Quick Time Player that's already on your MacAdd to iTunesEdit with iMovieUpload to YouTubeI chose iTunes, so I could watch it on my iPhone/iPod or on the computer. I highly recommend it. no issues found ...I looked and could see that I could also use my camcorder, DVD player, and other analog video to my Mac via USB 2.0. The software that Elgato gives you yields H.264 or MPEG-4 that I easily sent to iTunes. I am a novice at creating movies on DVD and I have never converted VHS content to digital. I purchased Elgato video capture and it was so easy to use I did it first time without any errors. I would highly recommend this product especially for the mac.

I purchased this item specifically to transfer my home movies from VHS-c to DVD. I was actually planning on buying a VCR that had both the VHS and DVD however, all of these products did not have good reviews. I saw that this item was MAC compatible and that the product was actually also sold at the Apple Store so I went ahead and gave it a try. The device was extremely user friendly and I have transferred over 20 home movies so far. The quality has been great and once I transfer them to I-movie I can edit them and save or can burn them to a DVD. This device was well worth the money and works great!!!! It is also priced under $100 which makes it quite affordable.

Elgato markets this as a H.264 capture device, but they only mention in the fine print (and nowhere on the Amazon page) that it does NOT include a hardware H.264 encoder. Instead, it uses your Mac's CPU to encode the video. This leads to two problems: first, your computer is basically useless for anything else while you're capturing video; and second, if your Mac isn't fast enough, it has to fall back to the lower quality (and less CPU-intensive) MPEG-4 codec. When I purchased this, Elgato's web site stated that H.264 was supported on machines with a 2.0 GHz Core2 Duo or better. In the latest 1.0.1 software update, they have revised this to a 2.33 GHz Core2 Duo, which puts my 2.2 GHz Core2 Duo MacBook Pro on the wrong side of the line. In addition, this device is very pricey for a software-only encoder -- there are other products available (albeit without Mac support) for a quarter of the price of this product that do video capture with software encoding.The final nail in the coffin is that even encoding in MPEG-4, the video captured with this device has frequent frame drops and glitches, which makes the recordings unusable. I've wasted over an hour recording video that I had to throw away because of frame drops. For those that say it's "okay" because the frame drops are infrequent, I disagree -- I'm not willing to audit hours of captured video to find the places where it dropped frames and re-record those segments.I'm going to be sending this back and trying either the Blackmagic Design H.264 Format Video Recorder (which does encode in hardware) or the Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder. Both of these are more expensive than the Elgato, but I'd rather pay more for something that works.

Am using this with a new iMac and it works perfectly. I plugged it in per the instructions and turned on the VCR and started the recording. Then transferred the recording to iMovie, poof, perfect. This product works well!

I bought this for my wife's birthday to go along with a new MacBook Pro. She wanted a way to capture home videos and convert them to DVD. Using this device along with iMove and iDVD works great. So far we have not had any problems with it.One note - this has nothing to do with the device but if you transfer your wife's applications from an older Mac to the new one make sure that you remove the older version of iMovie (and other Apple apps) from the new computer. It will save both of you a lot of time and grief in trying to figure out why your newly imported movie isn't transferring from iMove to iDVD...

Very easy to install and use! Just be sure to pay attention when your sound is muted... While you're capturing video, there is a box you can check that mutes the sound. After capturing my first VHS tape, I forgot to UNCHECK the "mute sound" box... so when I was getting my second VHS ready, I spent a frustratingly long time trying to figure out why my sound wasn't working. After finally deciding to proceed to the next step anyway, I saw that my lack of audio was due to the fact that the "mute sound" box was still checked. But other than that little mishap, this product works exactly as it's described!

This is an excellent product, and I highly recommend it. I am fairly competent in working with a computer, but don't know a whole lot about, or have much experience with, video recording and production. We recently got an iMac, and I have a bunch of old VHS tapes that I wanted to transfer to DVD, so I figured I'd give the Elgato a shot. It could not have been easier to set up and record my video. I'll play around with iMovie later, but I just burned an .mp4 to a DVD, popped it in my PS3, and was watching my old video on my TV a few minutes after it was done recording from the original tape. I would consider the video quality to be as good as if I had connected the VCR directly to the TV to watch the tape itself.From a technical standpoint, I don't have enough knowledge to give an in-depth review. However, I can say that this product did exactly what I wanted it to, was easy and intuitive to use, and was worth the price I paid for it.

i bought this capture card because i have a mac and want to record some cool things i do in video games. this is the best capture card out there. it has a very user friendly interface and anybody can use it. its just so easy to use and has to different outputs; rca and s-video. i love it. 5 stars.

The Elgato Video Capture has some not-so-hot reviews, this made me a bit wary on my purchase.After a few weeks of flipping through the different mac-compatible capture devices, I decided to go ahead and purchase this one. I couldn't be more happy.The quality leaves something to be desired for the 21'st century, but it's main function, taking old hi-8, VHS, etc movies, and digitizing them, isn't exactly a HD source, so the quality is more than sufficient.If users are looking for a capture card to record videogame gameplay (Xbox 360, Ps3, Wii, etc, etc) I highly suggest you look at the Hauppauge HD PVR (1212)Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorderit's a bit more expensive, but double the quality.It's PC compatible out-of-the-boxFor mac you will need an additional software program either:EyeTV 3.1+*OR*HD PVR Capture

This is a really easy to use product, but there are some things people should know before purchasing.It will work fine or ANY intel mac, but you need 2.2Ghz or higher to record in H.264 format. You can force the software to use H.264 even if you have a slower machine, but the result will not be good because it will skip frames or distort your recording.Using the MP4 format, I can record with only 40% CPU utilization on my 2.0Ghz core duo macbook. (Original black plastic model.) Therefore, I suspect that it will record fine in MP4 format on the slower Mac Mini units as well. I can't get the H.264 to work properly, because my CPU utilization becomes pegged at 95% and it ends up skipping frames.Some other observations.1. The output is limited to MP4 or H.264. No other output types are possible since this proprietary device ONLY works with the included proprietary software.2. There is absolutely NO way to tweak the MP4 and H.264 codec settings. There is no way to set bitrate, framerate, etc.3. Thankfully, you can set the aspect ratio--but you can only select 4:3 or 16:9. No other options are available.4. The 1.0.1 software update allows brightness/contrast control as well as a pre-set volume boost--a welcome update!

I bought this to capture my old VHS tapes into my iMac. I installed the software, connected it to the iMac's USB port on one end and my old VCR's RCA Video and Audio outputs on the other end, and within seconds I was digitizing away. Quality is good, software UI is nice and clean - everything works exactly as it should. Thanks to this device I finally watched my wedding video from ten years ago - digitize those old tapes before they disintegrate!Highly recommended

I thought that it would simplify my work with this device. It does not detect the PAL video format automatically and it does not have option in the preferences to fit it manually. It is the cable more expensive than I bought in my life. Since the connection that offers me is the same that the one of a cable of any mark. And what it allows me to do software already brings any mac.

Snap, Crackle, and Pop! Just add milk to Rice Crispies and that's what you hear. It was nearly that easy to transfer my VHS and home videos to my iMac. i've even uploaded captured videos directly to YouTube from the application, edited the capture in iMovie, and saved my captures in my iTunes library. Really good stuff!!!

I never write reviews for products, but I was so disgusted by elgato video capture, that I felt it was warranted in this case. There is a noticeable audio lag on the digitized files. Sometimes it's 2-3 seconds and sometimes it's as much as 10 seconds. And sometimes the audio is missing all-together. Hours spent capturing all this video only to have it essentially be unusable. This is absolutely unacceptable for a product that I paid over $100 for.

I bought this for my son to use to capture video from his Xbox. It was easy to install and works just fine. He loves it and uses it constantly. The video quality is acceptable but not the greatest, especially if you are used to playing Xbox in HighDef. You have to use the standard video cable for your Xbox, as this capture device won't work with HighDef. We knew this ahead of time, but there really weren't any realistically affordable options at the time we bought this.

You always get what you pay for. In this case, the price is well worth it.The device is very well built, with superb capturing quality. It is nothing like the "cheap" Windows devices you'd see like by other Amazon sellers - some of these cheap devices look like school projects from elementary schools!The software is extremely easy to install and use, typical top-notch Mac user experience. Most important of all, it is very well written. Particularly, it is very tolerant to slower machines. I tried it on three different Macs (various memory and CPU speed) with the same great capture quality. Many Windows-based capturing tool are not like that - if you don't use the fastest WIndows machines, you always get jumpy capture every now and then.Elgato is the best there is!

I was very disappointed with the installation and lack of ability to contact the seller by phone to get help. I returned the item because I could not get it to work and when I registered the product in order to be able to contact the company for help, I never received the acknowledgement of my registering that I needed in order to submit a "ticket" to get help. This is totally unacceptable to treat customers this way.

Length:: 3:38 MinsIf you are like us you probably have hours and hours of home movies that are slowly decaying on VHS tape. In the ideal world I would have all of our home movies on my computer where they can be made into DVDs or sent to a media player (I am using Apple TV with 160GB Hard Drive - MB189LL/A since it works seamlessly with my Mac). I happy to report that the Elgato helps to solve the problem of how I am going to get this media into my computer. I will say that there are other options such as buying a VHS/DVD recorder and then using software such as Handbrake to rip the content off of the DVD. I am sure there are others ways too... but using the Elgato Video Capture was the choice I used.Pros-- Easy set-up (less than 5 minutes)- Cost effective- Works for all media types - if it has a RCA or S-Video output you are in business - This includes a my mini-DVD video camera, Slngbox, DVR, or your TV- Will record directly from your Tivo (see above)- I didn't have any of the problems with the video/audio syncing- Works perfectly with a Mac (PC users have other choices)- Will publish directly to YouTube and ITunesFinal Verdict - Works perfectly for me and I couldn't be happier!

Awesome product. Transferring my old tapes into my Mac (mp4 format) was easier than I could have ever imagined. I am very satisfied and happy with Video Capture. Do not second guess and buy it if you want to transfer your videos seamlessly. It is a no brainer.

It came two days ago and installation was a breeze. I hooked up my VHS recorder and started digitizing various tapes (24 hours worth so far) to see how it would do. Of course the VHS tape quality isn't near what DVDs can do, but the results were basically as good as it could be from the source material. The Elgato software was easy to use and the resulting files were reasonably compact and free of artifacts. There was slight tearing at the bottom, but I think that is the tape recorder not the Elgato device.Doing the capture on a 2.4GHz Macbook and it uses about 75% of the CPU resources. I wouldn't recommend doing this on Macs more than about 3 years old, and I don't believe it will work on non-Intel Macs. Sound seemed broken if I monitored it, but the captured sound in the movie files was perfect.

Easy to install, easy to use. Video transfers to my iMac effortlessly (using iMovie). My camcorder (from the mid 90's) only has one audio output, so transferring from the camcorder results in sound in only one ear... had to use a VCR with both L and R audio outputs to get stereo sound. Not a problem with this product, just something to keep in mind.
