I bought this device to record some old vhs tapes and some dvr stuff on my tv. Very easy to use and it came at a good price. Much easier to use than my sony stand alone dvd recorder(too complicated for me!). Plus it is more fun to edit in imovie and really easy to dump into idvd and burn. The only problem I have had so far is that the audio seems just a little off. Not sure if it is something I can fix or not. Other than that a great product in my eyes.

It was so remarkably simple and easy to use, did what it was supposed to and did it just right. Not many bells and whistles, no complications. Easy to use and worked perfectly

The picture on the box in the background, shows a full screen video, either playing or being captured, we don't know. But after buying it, and fooling around with it for an hour or so, trying to get the video input on a full screen, it wasn't happening. So I contacted technical support, and asked what the problem was, and they said, ELGATO IS NOT CAPABLE OF FULL SCREEN VIDEO PREVIEW. So I immediately returned it for a full refund.

I just received my Elgato Video Capture yesterday, and worked with it for several hours last night. I just bought a new MacPro (quad-core Nehalem) with 8 GB of memory, and was excited to digitize the family VHS tapes from over the past 20 years. Those of you with Macs know that "it just works." Unfortunately, this Version 1.0 device does not appear to be quite ready for prime-time. I tried 3 different VCRs, and the video kept disappearing ("signal lost" message) while I was attempting to make the clips. It seemed to occur around 10 minutes into each video. Also Elgato claims that both MP4 and H.264 video is available, with it defaulting to MP4 for the "older, slower" Macs. There is a way to force selection also. Mine immediately defaulted to the MP4 format. I was able to make a 10 minute clip at H.264 when I forced the selection. However, after making that one clip, the only thing coming out after that were MP4s, and those faded in and out as mentioned above. The device was warm to the touch at the end of the session. I am extremely disappointed in this product - I feel like I'm back in PC-land where you have to coax and "fine-tune" things to get them to work. I will contact Elgato support tonight and update my review depending upon their responsiveness. I was unable to find ANY reviews on this new product, hence my decision to purchase directly from the manufacturer.

My Elgato has been great, my only complaint is that you can only perform one task at a time. You can't capture video and upload a separate video to youtube. If anything its more of a minor pain. Other than that I love it! Easy install as it is on MACS Everything is straight forward

This Product is very easy to use. as with most mac products, installation is just a matter of insterting a disk, and dragging the the new application icon into onto the applications folder. capturing video is just as easy. i gave this product 3 stars only because the overall quality of the video capture is a little dull, fuzzy. i use it to record gameply footage from xbox360, wii, and ps3. I recommend getting this from amazon though, its cheaper hear than most places.

Received this as a Christmas present and am happily surprised at the ease of use. Have used it to transfer video from archaic VHS tapes and slight more modern 8mm ones with no difficulties. My only minor complaint is that you need to generate multiple separate clips from, say a tape where you only want sections of the material rather than being able to stop/start the recording within a single file. Of course it's easy enough to concatenate the files later with other software, so hardly a show stopper. I would gladly recommend this software to others.

Recently purchased the Grabber in the hopes that "10.5 and later" in the description would include Snow Leopard; Good News! When you first install the software a drop down window tells you that an updated version is now available for 10.6 and later. One click and it was installed. Works great with 10.6.2. Used the S-video plug and audios to convert tape to digital. The quality of both was very good for editing in iMovie.

Excellent Product. Works Wonderfully. Would Recommend To Anyone Looking To Capture Video Into Their Mac To Edit & Burn Their Home Movies Or Any Movie. :)

I'm on a new 27" iMac, so learning how to use new QuickTime and iMovie Software. Downloading with Elgato from an 8MM tape produced in 1990 was as easy as hooking up a present day camera. It just took me a few minutes to figure out how to produce a six minute segment from a very long tape. But in less than half an hour I had the job done and the video posted on the internet for my family to see. I have been waiting for years for this capability at a reasonable price, and am thrilled that I can now save all our family's videos taken over many years to digital format that I can edit and share!

I have been pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of the Elagato 10020840 Video Capture device. I simply plugged in the audio and video cables (after installing the software) and followed the directions. The only editing feature I am using is the clipping of video and audio in areas that have been taped that I clearly don't want. Some old VHS movies I have left in the MP4 format on external hard drive. I sent one to an iPod which worked fine. Also I converted a number of old family VHS to iMovie to edit later. I was able to mute the sound on the ones I tried and worked just fine. Finally in one review I read had concerns regarding the fact that it would only convert for 3 hours. I simply clicked the check mark off in the box for automatic shut off and it actually ran and converted for 6 hours which is the I ever recorded

The product was exactly as advertised both in what was included in the package and in what it does. I've been totally pleased with the purchase and recommend it.

PROS:- About as easy to use as it gets- good capture quality for converting old VCR, miniDVs, etc- Small, compact, nice design- movies import right into iMovie or can be added right to iDVDCONS:- none

Finally got around to importing 8mm and vhs tapes and the Elgato made it VERY easy! I used it on an iMac running Snow Leopard and iLife 09 - no problems whatsoever.Highly recommend to any fellow procastinators.

Purchased this product to use on the Mac.Installation very easy & using it is easier.Great for digitalizing the old VHS tapes.

As expected this device works as it should and as expected. Easy to setup and use. I am a hardcore Mac man so it fit my needs perfectly. If you need to pull video into your Mac and the the only option is via RCA connections, then this is the tool for you.

I had the software installed in about one minute. Connected it up to my Hi-8 camcorder and imported a movie I made with my son quickly. I recommend it!

Since I haven't used other products I can't compare, what I can tell you is that it seems to do the job, which for me is transfer from 8mm analog video.

It does exactly what I need it to do. Right out of the box I started to put my old vhs tapes on to my computer. It did it with no problems at all. I am very happy with this product.

Excellent product for VHS / 8 MM video conversion to computer disk..Easier to use that i thought it would be.Very fair price.

I suppose for old VHS tapes and such, this would be fine.However, for anything with any sort of real resolution and high brightness/contrast, the video is far too dark. Recording resolution is also fairly horrid and pixelated. For people who are only using the SD cables for their game consoles on their TVs, I suppose it is ok, since they won't notice a difference in quality. But for those of us who can go to at least 720p, this product is no good for recording anything off of them.I simply cannot recommend this product for any serious video capture beyond old VHS home movies one might wish to put onto their computers for CD/DVD transfers. I am returning the product and going for one that is slightly more expensive but that at least allows for component video input over composite or S-Video.

Pros:- Video/Audio recording quality is good.Cons:- You wont be able to preview the video source in fullscreen, this software was made for recording only.- You wont be able to use this hardware as a video input for other software on your mac!I would be happy with this product if they fixed this software, and I say "fix" because I feel that not having a way to preview the input video/audio in fullscreen with an OPTION to record is a major BUG!

Beautiful device, very well designed and seemingly easy to use.But beware that it works ONLY WITH INTEL CORE 2 DUO PROCESSOR. Older MACs with Power G4 are not compatible to this device. Nothing, except compatibility description on product box itself warns you of this fact.Think a specific mention to this fact for a "Mac compatible device" would save considerable time for customers.

This device seems to be well worth the money. I have used this a few times but it was simple to install and get working. The video quality is fine but I didnt try anything but video from my camera. I will edit this review as I use the product more.
