I love the camera - but not the pop-up flash. What a pain. The camera takes great shots and the zoom is the best I have ever had on a pocket size camera. Night flash shots take some work to get right, but having to reset the flash every time it pops up gets old. Real old...

This was rated very highly by CNET and has great reviews. They all stated that battery life was an issue and they weren't kidding. The camera, just sitting on my desk powered down, discharges in about a week. For some reason, they designed the camera to keep the GPS circuit active which I believe is what kills the battery. So, if you want to use the GPS function, you need to turn it on when needed, but turn it off before shutting the camera off so it doesn't sap the battery. I'm still experimenting and will update this review as I learn more.As with all camera's these days, the images are very good and the video is also very good. No complaints there at all.

Very disappointed with Canon. I bought mine at Best Buy and had the same issue with the poor battery life, this was even after the firmware "update". This is wrong to continue selling a camera that they know has issues, now I know why it was sold at such a discount. It makes you wonder how poor Canons testing is to overlook this huge flaw. I was also not happy with the image quality, I took shots side by side in auto with my five year old Canon SD790 IS and it was much better. In the end I took it back and got the Sony HX50V...it was more expensive but it beats the Canon in every way. The battery life is excellent, I can actually record video and take pictures and go back to recording, and the image quality is better. Shame on you Canon, you took a loyal customer and forced him to another brand.

This is a great little camera. I love the x20 zoom, but be careful of the stability when zoomed in. You might want to use a tripod. I bought it for my upcoming vacation and I'm very excited to use it. Pictures are very clear and the larger screen makes it easy to compose your photo. I haven't used all the features, like the WiFi transmissions, but so far I love it.

I have missed documenting important family moments because of this camera's battery failure during movie mode including, My one year old's first steps, my daughters birthday singing happy birthday as she blows out the candle, other precious moments gone. I bought the camera for the 1080 movie quality which is useless. Its not fair to have been sold a product which only provides half its function. I've never written a review or felt the need to until now. This has been the worst experience. I bought this camera in August, I began the process to return it after trying to update the firmware without success. I was told both by Amazon and Canon this is no longer under warranty and neither will accept a return or repair it. $200 wasted. What a horrible feeling. Please, Save yourself the hassle, grief and hours spent trying to call, update firmware, etc.

I had an SX230 and loved it. It was perfect for trips where I wanted photos, but did not worry too much about trying to get the best shots. It was a great snapshot camera as is the SX280. I dropped the SX230 and was glad for the chance to "upgrade" to the newest model.One very nice improvement on my model is that the flash does not automatically deploy. Even in auto flash mode, the flash does not pop up until needed. This is great and makes handling at start up easier.The movie issue is still not resolved and it is disappointing Canon has not faced the problem head on. If the battery is not fully charged, then, when I push the red record button, the camera shuts off. When I received the camera in early September, I installed the firmware, but it does not correct the issue. A full battery will allow movie clips, but this should still be fixed.Also, once in a while, the camera shut down for no reason in the middle of shooting.Was not able to get WiFi to work, but do like GPS. Would like raw.

I've have the battery die [shooting video] in about 15 minutes. Also most connection features relay on using Canon's very buggy software and major authentication problems makes this a do not buy. First bad Canon I've ever got.

Takes great still pictures. really like the wide angle lens. Wish it was more reliableBattery drains almost instantly when trying to take videos.Camera give an error message and shuts itself off if left on more then 30 seconds.Amazon won't return or replace it.

I love photography and have a semi-pro setup for a DSLR which goes with me everywhere when I travel. However, there are times that a camera like this XS280 is too convenient to pass up. The photos it produces are all Canon with sharp details and good color reproduction. The 20x optical lens is responsive and to the average user shows little distortion throughout its range. This is not a DSLR, but in a pinch it can produce photos that the home user can hang on the wall.

I use this at work to take pictures of evidence.Pros:-Compact-A lot of different modes-1080P video with zoom (very nice video displayed on my 50" TV)-20X optical zoom-Digic 6-Wifi-GPS tagging-Bright LCD screen in direct sunlight-Optical stabilizer pretty goodCons:-No optical view finder-You cannot really use the 20X optical zoom without a tripod-Sometimes the battery flashes it is empty when it really isn't-The way I hold the camera (like anybody else would) sometimes blocks the pop up flash-In auto mode, indoor quality not the best-Pictures are somewhat soft-Color and skin tone a little off indoors-Battery like as specified (not good in my opinion, make sure you have spare)Overall, this is a nice step up from the 300HS we used to have. I wish canon would implement the same naming convention as cell phone cameras: YYYYDDMM_HHMMSS. Very easy to organize files with that naming convention. Have not used the wifi function yet. Bluetooth might be better option being my laptop can easily sync with bluetooth.

partly because my sweet husband surprised me for my birthday, but it is just the cutest camera. Very simple to use, easy directions,and I don't think I'll max out the capacity . the camera is so light and fits easily - any pouch that my purses have for my cell phone will hold the camera. it's very thin. Mine is red and I love it

I was looking for something more controllable than the ordinary point and shoot, but still easy to carry around. It fits easily into a trouser pocket, but it is on the heavy side.The camera allows you to set the shutter speed or the aperture or the "film" speed and even manually focus, or just go for fully automatic. I think the highest ISO speed is 6400, which is very sensitive.Thankfully there is no touch screen, just the normal Canon set of buttons + a knurled ring that is pretty easy to use with a bit of practice.You can turn on or off the GPS function. Fun to play with sometimes, but probably eats up battery time.Because of the amazing image stabilization the X20 zoom can be used simply hand held.I read a lot of comments about the poor battery life of this camera. I found that there is an ECO function which switches off the display after a second or two of non operation, and switch the display on if you touch any of the controls - I got used to this very quickly, and it should extend battery time, but I have not had any problems so far anyway.

I read the reviews on this camera before buying and knew about the firmware update. As soon as I got the camera, I upgraded the firmware that is supposed to fix the battery issue. As soon as I start using video the low battery indicater comes on and the camera shuts down. Also the video it records is saved as mp4 file which even the canon software does not recognize. None of my video editing software recognizes the files and you cannot save it any other way.The camera does take good pictures and is quick, but the battery issue kills all the positives for me. I will be sending the camera back. Canon should stop selling this camera due to its issues.

I really need a pocketable point and shoot as a mom of three active boys. We also keep a rugged lumix and a rebel in the house. I liked the stats of this camera and we have had many Canons we have been happy with so I was excited to get the SX280. With the first SX280 - we also experienced the known battery warning but we didn't get the 30 minutes of video. I had a 2nd grade play, a high school choir performance, a boy scout court of honor, and some other stuff I wanted to tape. We brought a spare battery - but we were lucky to get 15 minutes on either battery before the camera died (not just the light blinking). After the first time this happened, we made sure both batteries were fully charged - same thing happened again. Since everyone else was saying 30 minutes plus - we sent ours back as defective and received a replacement. With the second SX280 - we didn't even get to the point of videotaping since within a few days of getting it (and it was not banged around or dropped) - the lens cover would only open about 1/3 the way leaving a diagonal slit to look through. Part of me wants to try again because people have had good experiences with it and we might just have gotten duds. A larger part of me thinks i have already lost out on a bunch of irreplaceable memories - which is why I got a point and shoot in the first place.

I got this Camera for my birthday and I love it. The zoom is amazing for this size of a camera, I had a Nikon coolpix S6300 and I would recommend this camera over that one. I love the way it brings out the color in pictures of flowers and portrait pictures. I would recommend this camera for beginner and intermediate photographers.

Takes good quality pictures, zoom is awesome, very easy to carry around. My only complaint is that when recording videos the low battery/change battery indicator comes on almost immediately even when you just put in a freshly charged battery.

It takes great pictures and perfect for its size. This is my secondary camera since I do have one of those large DSLR. I wanted to have something which I can carry in my purse and can whip it out whenever I want. This serves the purpose. The other reason why I bought it is because I can transfer the pics directly from it without manually connecting the camera. And not to mention the color!

This camera is defective and there has been no fix for the battery problem related to taking videos. Some people say that they only use the camera for still photos but that is like saying "I don't need the traction control on my car to work because I don't drive in the snow much". It is defective and Canon knows about it. Even more despicable is the fact that they do not acknowledge the severity of the problem and that reviewing organizations are not doing their job alerting prospective buyers. I took mine back months ago after it ruined my video opportunities on an Alaskan bear watch.

We bought this camera in the middle of July 2013 partially based on the reviews, even though there were a lot of low ratings. The low ratings were, for the most part, about the short battery life and/or shutdown after using video for a few minutes. Other reviews mentioned a firmware update to fix that problem, so we thought that eliminating the reviews based on that problem, it would have a very high rating.We received it on Friday and returned it on Saturday. It would turn itself off randomly or the display went completely black, and it sometimes displayed the icon for a mode the dial wasn't set on. We did not try the video because these problems were enough for us to return it.We opted to receive another SX280, thinking we'd just gotten a dud. Wrong! The new one came on Wednesday, and took great pictures and performed well, except for the dead battery/shutdown problem. Thinking the firmware update would fix that and I'd have a great camera, I downloaded and applied the update. Wrong! Looks to me like this model is a dud. If we weren't paying for the video feature, we'd keep the camera because it takes very good pictures (Canon, knock a hundred bucks off the price and we'll buy another). The second one is going back today (Thursday).

The camera layout of controls is the poorest I have ever seen. To hold it to take a pictureand your finger holds the flash down. Any adjustments will cause you to hit the movie button. Viewing the photo you took with th live picture is awkward. I returned the unit. I just could noit use it comfortably and, I have been taking photos for many years. I do not recommend it .Read CNET and Photography reviews before you buy

The Seller was very good...I didn't have to contact the Seller, but the overall experiencewas just grand. Would do that again. The Camera was purchased as a gift and therecipient of the Canon SX280 just can't get over how great it is....Color is out of this world!Just can't say enough about the overall Camera. Has ease of operation. and is lightenough to be a good pocket camera.......Go AHEAD folks, jump in and enjoy one too.

I was in New York and it stopped working. After some back and forth with technical support it was determined that they needed it to be repaired. They replaced it under warranty without question. It makes me feel good about Canon.I'm amazed at the stuff this camera can do. You can set it up to take a picture on its own when you join a group, when you blink or when you smile. I like the feel in my hand.

I love the feel of this point and shoot camera, and while I have mostly used the auto setting and the backlight, it just takes great pics. Low light photos turn out perfect. Lots of options and capabilities that I haven't even begun to discover yet. I need a tutorial to start using it to it's full capacity. But even just on Auto, it's wonderful. Battery use has been very adequate..not problems with running out of power. Easy to charge, fits in my pocket or purse. The software is intuitive and easy to use also. I use it for traveling, family events, and sometimes even real estate photos. It's wide angle and my shots come out lovely. I love it.
