I bought this little gem on Amazon after getting sick and tired of taking lousy pictures with my iPhone 5. I had mistakenly sold a Nikkon thinking I could use my iPhone. Now, I am getting much better photos, a flash that fires immediately instead of taking three or four seconds to shoot (iPhone), and a nice zoom to boot.For me, I could care less about comments that the battery life is short. Most of these kinds of cameras have the same issue and extra batteries are CHEAP!Of course, something like this will never come close to a high DSLR but for the most part, only pro photographers will be able to tell the difference for most photos. I just want to take clear photos, have a nice little zoom and use some of the camera's features for special situations.All in all, best value for the buck! Thank you Canon!

I read through all of the negative reviews, but decided to give this camera a shot (haha). Bad move. This is the first review I have ever done on any product, on any website. I wish that it were filled with unicorns and rainbows. Alas.Before I leave my brief, pithy comments about the product itself, let me say that I have a degree in astronautical engineering and the owner's manual was more difficult to understand/use than coordinating a Martian landing in a foreign tongue. Horrible.Spoiler Alert: The issues with the zoom and video have NOT been resolved. In fact, I had shutdowns just using the zoom in "still" mode.There's a reason it's on sale, folks. Run.

Not very impressed with this camera. It still has the battery issue that I read about in the reviews before buying it. Plus a lot of the pictures we have taken have been blurry, especially with any movement. Consumer reports rated this camera pretty high but I am not so sure about this one.

Canon should be ashamed for selling this product which can't record video as described. Read the reviews on Canon's own website regarding this camera. Even after doing the firmware update as recommended it still doesn't operate. When attempting to record a video, the low battery light flashes, even with a fully charged battery. After 20 seconds of recording it shuts down and a message comes up to recharge the battery.I contacted Canon support and was told that a camera that has a serial number with the sixth digit being 2 or below requires the firmware update and that should correct the problem. My firmware update was done correctly and I'm sure the reviews of the others that did updates are also correct. IT DOESN'T CORRECT THE PROBLEM. The tech support agent couldn't explain except that it must be an internal problem in the camera and I could either send it in for repair or try and and exchange it for a new camera. I have had the camera for just over one week and it has only caused frustration. CANNON, PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS ON YOUR OWN WEBSITE. TAKE THE CAMERA OFF OF THE MARKET IF THE PROBLEM CAN'T BE FIXED. Please be careful before buying this product. Thank goodness that I am dealing with AMAZON - THANKS AMAZON.

I had the previous version of this Canon camera without the wifi, but I messed up the lens, so I replaced it with this new version. Takes great photos, love the long zoom - works great even in lower light situations. A great little camera I have taken to concerts and gotten really great photos with. Love the wifi - I can upload photos directly to my iPhone and iPad without any wires or adaptors, same to the the computer. I love being able to share a better quality photo than my built in phone camera takes on social media quickly.Yes this is a bit larger than the Elph series, which I used to buy all the time because they were so small, but I will trade the smallness for this longer lens and better stability any day!!

This is the best point-and-shoot camera I've had yet--the optical zoom is amazing, the photos are excellent, the features a little complex for me, but I was figuring it out. The size is perfect--pocketable. So on those things I would give this camera 5 stars. BUT, I have the same 'known issue' with the battery--I only get 25 or so photos and no videos at all before the battery indicator flashes and then the camera shuts down. I've read about the 'firmware fix' that doesn't seem to fix the problem, and I don't have the time or patience to install a fix on something that should not be sold malfunctioning. I'm so sad to return it--those 30 photos I took with it were my best ever, but it would be unusable on trips where I use it for bird photos--the zoom kills the battery. A shame.

Amazon saved my vacation by being able to ship a new camera next day when my original camera was damaged. This camera takes very good pictures, like the SX260 I replaced it with. The redesigned on-off button on the top is easier to press, but also easier to accidentally press. Like others, I searched and searched for the panorama mode only to discover it wasn't implemented with the SX280. It was on the SX260. I can still take manual pano series, but have to be more careful so the photos will match up when I get home.

Canon has always been my preferences in both SLRs and digital SLRs, and this lil digital camera competes in some ways with my Canon 60D. Image quality is excellent, the image stabilization is awesome and works very well when shooting from my motorcycle. The GPS aspect of it is one of the primary reasons for my purchase, and now it is very easy to remember just where I was when I took a particular shot. That is very handy, especially on my trips to Sturgis, where I may take 500+ photos in a week.The only improvement I could think of would be if it used AA batteries instead of the proprietary batter, but I imagine that it's a matter of voltage and amperage requirements.Definitely recommend it!

I've never had a camera that inhales dust the way this one does.I had the previous model before this one... and it had a minor problem... but nowhere as bad as this one.I took my first flash photo a few days ago... and upon examining the photo... it looks like there are drops of sweat everywhere on the photo... flares from dust spots.Never seen it before... and now I have to figure out how to get it cleaned. Argh.Gotta find something different!Great lens & features otherwise... but after 2 months... with this much dust... this is a deal killer... and NOT ACCEPTABLE.BTW... I have not been in any extraordinary environments... dusty or otherwise with this camera.But it appears that the bellows-effect when zooming is sucking in micro dust particles and depositing them (visibly) inside the lens...

Beware! Memory card is not included with this camera and this is not made clear in the product description. It took me 20 minutes to try to locate the memory card so that I could operate the camera, thinking I had misplaced or something. Then I realized the memory card was actually not included. Product description should have made that clear. I have never bought a camera without a memory card included ever before. Annoyed that I now have to shop for a compatible memory card, spend more money AND pay for shipping. Had I known beforehand, at least I could have ordered both at the same time to take advantage of the free shipping promotion.

I've had this camera for about a month and so far I'm perfectly happy with it and have not had any issues. I bought this to sub out for my T4i when I can't have such a big camera with me. The picture quality is great for the price point, and I like that it has the manual modes, which helps decrease the gap for me between the two cameras. I hardly ever use my cameras to shoot video and have not yet tested this feature on my SX280. If the video doesn't work I can always use my iPhone, and I always carry a spare battery for my cameras anyway.

I very much enjoy this new PowerShot with the 20x zoom. I slip it in my pocket on my walks and it is always on hand when that great shot comes up. I love to be able to zoom in on images that before I couldn't even see. Still working my way around all the features but so far I am happy with what I see.One thing I am not sure of it that sometimes it doesn't seem to focus on the area that I am trying to shoot. Still looking into why.

This was a Christmas present for my wife. It replaced an older version Canon camera of about the same size. She was able to use it right away and loves all of the updated features especially the 20X zoom. It takes great quality photos indoors and out with accurate color balance and very good exposure across the frame. Thinking about buying one for myself so I don't have to carry around my 50D with the lenses. Great buy.

I was suspicious when I opened the new in box camera and saw there were fingerprints all over the viewfinder. But since there were no scratches, I thought I'd just keep it. But now it cannot detect my Sony Vaio computer via wifi, although it detects my husband's same model of laptop across the room. When I turn his computer off it can't find any computer by wifi. We use the same anti-virus programs.The software is on my computer. Canon tech support is closed. Will call them tomorrow but if they can't solve it I'm sending it back. Maybe they sent me a lemon.

This camera takes great pictures. I really like how well it takes pictures in gyms. My granddaughter plays basketball and indoor soccer and previously the pictures would be too dark (even though it seems like there's plenty of light). I was able to get some great pictures at her last game.Setup for WiFi was a bit tricky and I still do not have it set up to upload to facebook. That may have to do with my firewall at home. I have not had a chance to call Canon and see what I may be doing wrong. So I can't speak to any of the wifi functions of this camera.We went to a TSO concert in December and were able to get some really great pictures.I did buy a spare battery - but the battery life seems to be acceptable.

I really want to love this camera - It's pretty, compact, great features, good quality photos - but when taking video (with zoom) the camera will shut down automatically. This is a deal breaker for me! I even got the latest firmware and experimented with it on several occasions... I tried taking video at a concert with the battery fully charged and had bad luck. It will take the video for about a minute or so, but then once I zoomed in it just shut down. I tried again, then 30 seconds it shut down. If you don't use video, it's a great camera. However, if you plan to use the video feature please don't buy.

Don't buy this camera. Very disappointed in Canon customer service. I read about the bug in the battery indicator but saw one post that the firmware update had fixed it. It has NOT. I sent it back to Canon TWICE and both times they sent it back unfixed. The second time they claimed the issue is that the battery runs out more quickly on video mode, and that is the problem. It's NOT. The battery appears full in most photography modes, but AS SOON AS YOU SWITCH TO VIDEO MODE, the battery flashes red and appears to be out of juice. This also occurs for us in Sport Mode. So while this camera works fine if you only want to take photos, you cannot take videos because it thinks it's out of battery power. I'm angry with Canon customer service that they have failed to address this claim and deny its existence, returning to me a poorly functioning camera.

Good portable camera, excellent zoom quality ... the main reason for purchase was the zoom, didn't want to carry extra lenses or camera bags, does the jobs. So so action pictures, sometimes the come out good tho. Never had a problem with Canon and still don't have a problem. Gave it 4 stars bcse thought the action pictures will come better, they're so so even using the fast motion feature.

We have returned to Canon cameras because you can actually understand their instruction manual. This model is a gem in every respect with the exception of battery life. This is easily resolved by buying a spare battery or two.If you photo expectation is to record life events, your travels and people(including movies of grandchildren) this is a great choice at a modest price.

I currently own SX40HS and a SX200IS, which this camera is replacing. The most important thing to me is picture quality and the SX280 really produces nice pictures. I only use a camera for occasional videos, which I why I bought the extra batteries. It is small and yes the flash is in an awkward position, but you can move your hand away from it! Once again my major concern is picture quality. I also bought a SanDisk Extreme class 10 sd card, and on continuous shooting this camera is faster than any point and shoot I have tried. The zoom is very nice and the camera does well in low light. For the price, this is a hell of a deal!

This is the second SX series Canon camera I have owned. I love the picture quality and low light capability. The SX230 I owned previously (the viewer screen died after only a year) also took great high quality pictures but the SX280 has a much better, stronger zoom lens. I do not like the flash arrangement on the 280 as well as my old 230. I find that I have a hard time remembering to move my finger off the flash when it tries to raise and causes a camera fault. I then have to shut the camera off and then back on to reset it. The picture write speed and power on speed is much better with the 280 so you can make shots faster. I do not like the placement of the on-off button as well as the one on the 230. It is right under your fingers where you want to hold on to the camera when you are putting it into a case so it keeps getting turned on when you don't mean to do so. I loaded the software update from canon to get rid of the low battery warning on video recording but it still occurs after only a short recording of video. Canon still needs to work on this issue with this camera. I mostly use my camera to shoot stills so that has not been a huge problem for me, I am still glad I purchased it in spite of it's shortcommings.

I have been buying CANON cameras as far as I can remember. I wanted to update as my last one had a much smaller screen. This one is just simply great. The zoom is awesome and everything is just like me old one but with more added features. I haven't tried out all the features as yet, but so far so good and I love it!

Ergonomically poor design. I frequently turned the camera off when trying to push the shutter release. Very frustrating, especially when you want to take a "quick grab" photo. Hard to grip. Flash pops up where I would normally put my left index finger.

Went with this camera as it rated high in Consumer Reports. No disappointments so far. Video is better than our older camcorder. Wish the paper manual had info on the 12 (yes, 12!) mode settings. Apparently that info is on the CD.
