I bought my SX280HS in Oct. 2013. I now realize that I can't shhot videos! I am planning a trip very soon and that is one reason I bought this camera.Below is the message that I senr to Canon, I hope I get a quick response that resolves the big problem!!Yes, after seconds of video shooting, the battery warning comes up and the camera shuts down. An off/on says full battery and I can take stills but no video?Yes, I have tried all the suggestions that I saw: Battery and card out for 1 minute and then a half hour I downloaded the upgrade from the Canon site etc.Help, I really would like to have the camera operating, will I have to return it?Thank you.

This was the best rated pocket cam on Cnet. i wanted it for thw Wifi...so I could instantly post to Facebook. But...it turns out that thias cam has 20x OPTICAL ZOOM....really great quality lens. People are amazed at my photos....it IS about light though...Can't go wrong!

I am not a photographer by any means, so take this with a grain of salt. I use the camera primarily while out hiking or at social gatherings and so far it has taken nice crisp photos. For a photo dummy like me the auto function works great for point and click shooting. Performs much better than the Nikon Coolpix I had before.

I bought this camera to take on my vacation. I felt the pictures were awesome and it was very easy to use, It probably helps that I had another Cannon before this one. It arrived in time to take on our trip and several people commented on it and asked where I purchased it. Of course I told them Amazon. One aspect that I did not care much about when I bought but paid more attention several moths later, that was the wireless piece. One day I wanted to post some pictures on FB and decided to look into the wireless piece. Connected to my internet and then installed the camera app on my iPad and viola! I had pictures it was awesome!

I am not a photographer, or even an avid picture taker, but for casual family use, this is a great, easy to use, versatile camera. Lots of great features. I really like the large screen display.

I upgraded to the SX280 HS from the 260 HS because I wanted the DIGIC 6 processor and WiFi. What a mistake! There is a real problem with the battery life when using the the movie mode. I carry 3 Canon fully charged batteries. Within approximately 2 minutes after switching to movie mode to record, the battery meter changes from full charge to a flashing red low battery warning. Quickly thereafter, the camera turns off. I turn the camera off then back on and see a full charge state. However, as soon as I zoom, the flashing red low battery appears and soon shuts itself off if don't cycle it off then back on. I have installed the Canon firmware update but no change in the battery issue. The still photo mode appears to work without an issue. Very disheartening and disappointing from Canon.This, in my opinion, would be a fantastic camera if this issue can be corrected. It has a powerful optical zoom and takes first rate still pictures and videos. Unfortunately, the battery issue makes this Camera impractical unless you carry 3-4 batteries with you all the time and are will to endure this ridiculous process. Come on Canon, what are you doing? I wish I still had my 260 HS!

I like this better than my iPhone camera, and better than my prior canon SD1100. The zoom is great. I picked up a Case Logic TBC-302 FFP Compact Camera Case that goes on my belt. I do look like a tourist but it is very convenient. Nice pictures.

The camera is a very good size considering it has a 20x optical zoom. The pictures turn out fantastic since you can disable the digital zoom and still get up close pictures. What I will say is that the software on the camera is pretty glitchy. It will say it needs to be charged periodically for no apparent reason. If you shut it down for a couple of minutes and turn it back on it's fine, but I don't understand why this happens. If it were not for this issue I would definitely give it a 5 star review...but this is very important and must be fixed!

Some people might love this camera. Yes, it has a 20x zoom.I'm a somewhat experienced photographer. I have a Canon Rebel T2i and a Canon 5d mark iii. I'm about to take a trip to Europe and didn't feel like swinging a DSLR over my neck for 3 weeks. I wanted a small GOOD point and shoot camera that I could keep in my pocket or on my belt. Image quality didn't have to be DSLR quality, I just wanted good enough quality to do some selfies and pictures to post online, nothing to print or anything.However, my iphone 5 takes higher quality pictures. I did a test with the Iphone 5, the Powershot, and my Canon T2i. Obviously the T2i won, but the Iphone 5 was a close 2nd (for what I was doing). The Powershot had pretty low resolution in bright sunlight. So I didn't even attempt to see what it's like in low-light, but it didn't matter. So this Europe trip will have my T2i and my Iphone to take quick pictures. If you're already bringing along an Iphone 5, don't bother with this camera.

First let me say I am an occasional photographer - family gettogethers, grandchildren birthdays and occasional trips. I had 2 criteria that were "musts". 1. I wanted the best camera I could afford that would FIT IN MY POCKET. 2. I wanted lots of zoom (20x). My 7 year old Sony still takes good pics but only 3x. I was blown away when I got the camera a few weeks ago. 1 page of detailed instructions is enough for me....the sx280 has about 200 ! This camera has features I hardly comprehend! Doubt if I'll ever use the GPS or Wifi features.I have taken action shots in burst mode and have some good pics. Recent trip provided some excellent pics at the full 20x mode however best to use a tripod. Hint: I purchased an accessory package that includes a small tripod you can use almost anywhere. Will never go without it! I left it attached to the camera and would hold the tripod in my left hand which kept the camera steadier while shooting. Overall I'm very satisfied with the camera and look forward to using more of the shooting modes.

I bought this camera recently and have been amazed with it so far. The thee things I love the most are the 20x zoom that is clear Canon quality, the great shutter speed and the lightning fast save to memory card. The only downside is that the battery life is horrible.Previously I had a Nikon Coolpix S3100. It was such miserable experience that I just stopped snapping pictures. It was slower than I could have ever imagined (saving & start-up), the picture quality was horrible, the versatility wasn't there, etc. Great battery life, though.I needed a camera to make my next vacation a little more pleasant to film and tried this camera in the store. Needing to carry around an extra battery doesn't bother me thanks to the quality and speed of this little monster of a camera. I absolutely love it.Based on the hardware specifications (which you can grab online) it looks like a firmware upgrade might be all that is needed to fix the battery life if they ever publish it (I work with similar hardware problems).Easy to use and absolutely great for someone who knows nothing about photography. I've snapped more memorable, printable pictures with this in under a month than I did in 2 years with the Nikon S3100.

I don't understand the "best in class" hype around this camera. Unless iso is set at 80 and aperture at 3.5, the SX280HS takes soft pictures. In low light (a seasonal problem here in the northwest) the SX280HS uses such low shutter speeds that any movement at all is blurred. Noise is noticeable at 200 iso and becomes unacceptable at 400 iso or higher. I'm skeptical about the high sensitivity of the backlit CMOS sensor. The SX280HS is also limited by its relatively slow lens (f3.5).

I got this as a Christmas gift, but am returning it. This camera sucks battery life terribly! I charged the battery, took about 50 photos and the next day when I turned the camera on, it told me the battery needed to be charged. Since I got the gift pack with an extra battery, I did the same thing and got the same result. I'm buying a camera that doesn't need a daily battery charge.

Although I haven't tried all of the features yet, I've found this camera is easy to operate and takes great pictures. I keep it in a pocket of my purse all the time since it is so light-weight and compact. It's perfect for everyday use and travel.

Yes, the flash, but also trying to open the battery/SDCard door is a pain. You have to have just the right touch, which I just can't get without trying for 5 min. As I am trying, I keep hitting the power button. Very awkward. I also wish they would have provided a more detailed manual about the features.Quite frankly, I miss my little Sony Cybershot which was much more user friendly and did great artistic things in camera, very easily.

Best compact digital camera! Digital zoom & optical zoom are beyond expectations. Love the manual focus, especially for macro shots. Perfect compact for travel, but has great zoom for surprise wildlife/birding experiences. Battery has good life, unfortunately it must be removed from camera to charge.

We were searching for a smaller camera to travel with. We currently own a Nikon d3100. The Nikon has great photo quality but is bulky. After doing my research I chose to buy the sx280.The camera is a great size. Easy to store in my wife's purse or even in your coat pocket. The user interface is very easy to navigate. It has great features. The photo quality is great. I do like the rechargeable battery and the battery life seems to last as long as you would expect. It is a lot longer than some of the cameras we have owned that take AA batteries.All in all I am very impressed with this camera

Have a Power Shot SX200 IS 12x zoom which I have had for a few years and love. It lost its capacity to zoom so decided to get a replacement. The camera is much lighter in weight and has a faster zoom which at high magnification is quite unstable this makes it difficult when photographing wild life

I haven't really given the camera a good workout yet; but I am impressed with the amount of light which comes into the camera, the crispness of the photos and the speed of the shutter. I still need to learn about the many features; but, all in all, I am impressed with the camera.

This camera is much better than the SX260 (sold to my sister/bought SX280), faster, more features, excellent still and low light photos, but perfection was snatch away by the movie mode battery issues and the poor battery life. Otherwise an excellent feature rich camera. I really love the WI-FI, instant transfer to my tablet(that works great). If you don't care about video too much, the stills photos are best in it's class, and I must say that although there are problems with video mode, the videos that are captured before the camera shuts down are really good, especially the 1080p 60fps, but until canon get their act together and fix the movie battery shut off issue, the excellent features of this camera will be pushed to the background. So Canon get on the ball and fix the problem with an updated firmware. Your last attempt v 1.2 failed miserably. So for now only 3 stars until the battery/movie problem is fixed. Email me when you get it done and I'll update this to 5 Stars :)!

The following review was rejected by the Canon Web Site for the Canon SX280 HS.The Canon SX280 HS Camera is sold new with a known firmware issue, requiring the customer to purchase and install an expensive 32GB SD card, which is not included. Anything new out of the box requiring a repair is a recall item. There are 4 pages of technical instructions to correct the firmware glitch in the camera which shuts the camera down when using the video feature. Canon is aware of this, yet they still have the camera on the market at full price. I bought it yesterday, looked it up last night, saw a list of serial numbers affected, mine was on the list. I looked up price of 32GB SD cards today. I will be returning my Canon SX280 HS to the store it was purchased from - a Big Box Store. Canon makes the best low light point and shoot cameras on the market, I own 3, but this one is going back. At the very least Canon should be mailing out, free of charge, a 32GB SD pre-loaded firmware update to anyone who purchased the Canon SX280 HS.
