This is my first canon camera, I have 2 cameras, nikon d90 and sony hx300, I'm not going to compair these but to least features of this canon one.Handy design, light weight, perfect size.Excellent zoom function when used with a tripod.Great manual control over the shooting setting with excellent result.Amazing wifi function permit awesome photo sharing with mobile devices.Good and powerful flash but bad position and when operated interfer with camera handling during shooting.Worst battery life ever seen in a mobile device especially for a great camera like this

the biggest problem is they are trying for a camera that does all, hate to inform them it won't work, most of the negative reviews are about the battery, if you have any experience with the modern digital camera that is one of their biggest down falls, the other is all the batteries are unique, e.g. the sx230 had the nb5 the 260/280 have the nb6 surprise they use the same battery for both cameras. personally i didn't buy the camera to use it as a movie camera, nice additional feature but not primary. if you are going to buy this camera to use it as a movie camera don't. i have a second camera that uses aa batteries, they don't last long but are easy to find.

As an owner of Canon, Panasonic and Sony cameras, I initially bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25, because I think Panasonic's controls are a bit more intuitive. But the quality of the images, especially in low light, turned out to be horrible. I experimented at numerous settings in varied conditions and finally decided I would never be happy with the Lumix, so I returned it to the retail outlet and bought the Canon PowerShot SX280. And am I glad I did! For a pocket camera, the image quality is superb. In low light, at night, during the day, at wide angle or 20x zoom, I have been thoroughly pleased. In situations when I don't want to haul around my Canon 60D, the PowerShot SX280 is a great alternative. And Amazon offered it for a price that was hard to beat.

Bought this as the default travel camera to replace my aging Canon A590IS - though was a good camera at it's time it's poor low light photos let me down many times. I did my research before buying this so knew exactly what to expect.. but boy it still impressed me with the superb photo quality(for 12MP) and exceptional low light photo quality.I visited National Museum of USAF over the weekend and took nearly 500 photos where almost all of the exhibits are indoor and under artificial light. Shot only in Auto mode with no-flash and it produced great photos with low noise even at ISO 1600 and I'm really glad to see the results which exceeded my expectations.I ran with ECO mode on and battery held for nearly 300 shots(only less than 10 shots with flash thoug, and no GPS). I had my extra battery which came in handy anyway.On the down side as numerous reviewers indicated the battery indicator problem is there and I didn't have time for firmware update. Position of the flash is a little annoyance as I'm still not used to keep my finger away from it. Apart from that smart auto mode incorrectly set the scene to Macro mode for few items but I wouldn't call out it as problem.. as the camera does a good job detecting the scene most of the times.Overall this is a great camera for it's price with great photo quality and nice 20x optical zoom. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable travel camera.

I bought this camera to replace my canon SD850IS, which I still like a lot!, but the 4x zoom is frustrating. So I bought a super zoom compact camera.I miss the battery life of my old camera, really, weeks can pass and there's still battery to take quick pictures. That doesn't happen with the SX280. The camera drains out the battery. It works with regular photos, but as soons as you start playing with manual controls and video, you'll loose the battery.During my last trip, it happened to me many times that the camera suddenly shut down and sometimes it could't completely put away the lens, like if it was lacking power to do it.Picture quality in sunny situations is wonderful, I love it; but in dark ones, its not great. I just couldn't take what my eyes were seeing with the auto function.If you want to use the camera all day, buy a spare battery. Learn to use manual controls, and you'll get better results in dark situations.I'm between "it's ok" and "i like it" because, despite the issues above, I was able to take really great pictures.I haven't tried video in a concert, I'll update...

I have this camera myself, and love it! My grandson was impressed with its capabilities, so I got one for him for Christmas, he loves it as well. The wireless part is great, can send pics directly from camera to i-Pad, iPhone, computer or to any email. The pictures are outstanding and has an excellent zoom. My grandson uses it for taking action shots at sideline of pro football games. Some of his photos are most impressive, all action shots. I took my daughter's family pics for their Christmas cards this year, and they are as good as any photos they have had taken professionally. I carry it in my purse all the time, never know when I might have opportunity for a great shot. I recommend this camera to anyone.

The page for ordering the ReVive Charging Plates is not clear, it (to me) is very confusing. You put in the size plate you want for the battery you name, and they send the largest plate that will fit in the charger. This happened to me several years ago when I was ordering ReVive Charging plates for a camera that used smaller batteries. Finally I was able to communicate which plates were needed, then, and they were sent. This time I just said - "Go away", and they will issue a refund. I went with other battery chargers for my new camera that have a clear ordering page.The Canon PowerShot SX280 is super. Better zoom, better image stabilization, better resolution. Still could use better audio pickup on the highs from violins and the very lows from bass instruments. It really eats batteries when taking long - i.e. five minute, videos. So I have just ordered lots of batteries, like 30 - at great expense when you consider the multiple chargers so that ten or so batteries can be charged simultaneously. Why don't they put out a gang battery, made up of 15 or so 1600 mAh NB-6L batteries?

Like so many other reviewers, the camera will not take movies. As soon as you stet, it displays low battery and turns off. Trying power button 2 times will turn it back on, and camera displays full charge. You can take pictures, but as soon as you try video it turns off. At times the mode selected for pictures gets "confused" and portrait begins to take sports pictures, etc. Returning it today

I got this camera to be what it is, a very good pocket camera.The quality of the pictures from this camera is very impressive. I find that just leaving it on Auto, this camera handles the white balance better than I ever expected. I have never seen a camera this size take pictures that look this good this easily.I am using a Sandisk Extreme 32 gb card (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007M54E1M/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) in this camera.A few notes for those looking to buy this camera:1) The wi-fi is very easy to set up and use2) The picture quality is as good as if not better than anything else this size.3) The flash is a little awkward as it pops up from right where you want to put your finger when taking pictures, so be careful about that.4) There is a manual mode, but it is restricted. For instance, I was trying to shoot 1/250 with f3.5 at 1600 ISO so I could get a full zoom shot of a moving target where my flash was blocked from reaching the subject. The f stop was blocked from going below 5.6 at 1/250, so I had to boost the ISO to get the shot I wanted which ends up not looking as clean. I will also say this, remember this is a pocket camera and not an SLR, so this might have been asking a bit much for its size.5) Video quality is excellent.6) Battery life is decent and I bought these >(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008TX4I6W/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)< batteries as backups and they have worked well for me so far.If you want a great POCKET camera, this is the way to go. If you want the camera to do a little more and don't care if it fits in your pocket, I'd recommend the SX40.

I am a Canon fan. This camera came just the way all the previous reviews have said. Brand new out of the box, FULLY charged battery and the low bat light started flashing about 15 seconds into its first video. After reading about all this firmware update stuff I had hoped that Canon would have corrected the software issue. I have non contacted them yet but I will. The photos themselves are outstanding. I have disabled GPS and the option for a small video with every photo I shoot. I have only used AUTO and have put the lens right into a flower and saw the clear as could be. I also shot some video just in the back yard to test and the telephoto is beyond belief. I can tell you thought that even with auto stabilization it is really hard not to shake a fully 20X. Puling back just a little though and the picture calms down. Seriously, the camera is amazing, capabilities endless, size outstanding, but that damn low bat thing just makes me take this from 5 stars to 3. It deserves 5, but Canon disappoints due to all the previous complaints without correcting it. You can work around it and will love the camera. Maybe Canon should supply anyone with this camera a second battery just in case the light actually is correct. Otherwise your just guessing.

Read carefully, received everything except a memory card. It was not included with the camera. My mistake in assuming something that vital to the operation would be included even if it was only 12 gb... I am waiting another week to get the card. Yes, camera is nice looking and has a nice feel but it was built for taking pictures. No card no pictures.Buyer beware and order a card.

Purchased this camera from Amazon right before the holidays after an older canon camera was destroyed by my toddler. It's a really great camera, easy to use & the picture quality is very very good. I'm not using it for anything special, just family/social type pictures. I haven't used the video feature so I don't know if the battery thing everyone talks about is true but from my experience, the battery works just fine. The built-in WiFi hasn't gotten to really work for us but its not something we really cared much about. The best feature that we really wanted with small kids is the rapid fire shooting mode. You just hold the picture button down and it'll take 8-10 pictures in a row and really captures what you're trying to get. Very cool feature if you have young children where you only have a split second to get a good shot. Overall, I think it's a great buy.

I'm so disappointed. I read all of the reviews about the battery life issue before purchasing this camera. On Canon's website, they say if you have a serial number that has 3 or higher, you don't need the firmware upgrade that supposedly fixed the low battery life issue. So, mine has a 3 in the serial number and I thought it would be okay. WRONG! They are STILL defective. Shame on Canon for selling such a lemon. The battery problem occurs intermittently whenever using the zoom at all even in photo mode. Whenever I try and zoom, it shuts down and says "charge battery." You can turn it back on and you will have a full battery, but if you try and zoom with photo OR video, it immediately shuts down. I'm returning it to Best Buy where I also purchased the 1 year service agreement. The battery went dead anyway after shooting about 25 pictures. SERIOUS defects!

Camera broke while at Disney. Looked at Consumer Reports and bought this due to great ratings. It arrived in Orlando overnight. It takes fantastic pics from long distance. The sport feature is nearly as good as my SLR camera. I've taken great pics of my son jumping at track meet. My teens love the wifi so they can get the pics in real time for their social media. Best camera I've ever bought.

The camera is likely going to result in a class action lawsuit against Canon. The camera can take no more that a couple of minutes of video with a fresh battery before the low battery indicator comes on and the camera shuts off. Even after the firmware update the camera is worthless. It's like buying a car that needs to be filled up every 10 miles. Do not buy!!!!!!

Let me first state my use of this camera first. I have been documenting our life in the past 13 years with digital photography. I only keep pics that are decent quality/sharpness and I am nearing 15,000 pics. I have gone through a good set of Sony/Panasonic/Canon cameras. I refuse to work cameras that will not fit into my packet.I have owned the SX260 right before this. I love these Canon zoom pocket cameras, they are hard to beat at the current price point. I miss the auto panorama feature most other cameras have in this category. This should be an automatic feature instead of me stitching them together on the computer. I do have loaded the latest firmware, but video battery life is still way to short. I ended up buying a 1,600 mAh extra battery, this way I can manage not running out of battery for my needs. Picture/video quality and ease of use are truly as outstanding as DPReview states it. It starts up fast and I always use the GPS tagging feature. The zoom is so powerful that I am having difficulty not blurring my fully zoomed pics by my shaking hands. I recommend this camera for the family documentary photographers like myself.

We bought this camera and went on a weekend fall trip and were unable to do any videos!!! when we started to record a video the battery would flash empty and when we would try to zoom, the camera automatically shut down. very disappointing. so I called cannon to ask about the problem. they told me that all we had to do was go on there website and download some firmware and this would remedy the software glitch. I asked why these cameras were still being sold with this problem and not being recalled. no explanation. so we went to the cannon website and to update the software we have to purchase a SIm card reader cord for 14 dollars. The cannon representative some how failed to mention this part of the process to us. If you want days of frustration and spend more money to update your camera by this one. I am disappointed in amazon and cannon for continuing to send customers this camera. Both companies know if it has a particular serial number that those cameras have this problem. We are amazon prime members and will think about this the next time we go to buy something.

After a trip in 2013 decided I needed a new automatic digital camera that was good in low light environments.C-Net had a positive review. Amazon also had many positive reviews.Recently used on a trip. Completely satisfied. Works well in low light situations.Prior to my trip, I called customer support since I wanted shots to be at hd quality. Suggested using the p setting. Good advice.BTW the battery was not an issue. However, I did not shoot video or use the GPS function.

camera is exactly as described: small, light, well-built, pocket-able with long zoom lens. Great clarity in low light too. It's only drawback is it's speed from shot to shot, even with the fastest (10) SD card...it's slow. there's a delay of a couple of seconds between shots, very noticeable if you're coming off a DSL. so beware of that because it's the only 'fault' I can find with the camera outside of weak battery strength: get some extra batteries if you travel with it. One won't make it if you have GPS on, much less some of the other bells and whistles. Overall a wonderful camera and carry-able all day every day w/o hesitation.

PowerShot gets better and better. What I like about this one is the 20X optical zoom. I've used it to get photos of birds that are much better than the 10X I had before. The photo quality is better than a larger, more expensive camera I use. This one is a little heavier than other travel cameras I've had but so far it has been worth it

I like this camera. The pictures are great. I'm used to a larger DSLR, so I'm having trouble getting used to a smaller camera in my hand. I don't know how to hold it because your hand will either obstruct the view screen or prevent the flash from popping up. As I use the camera more, I'll get used to it.

Camera took great pictures on our recent vacation. A lot of people commented on how good the pictures were & wanted to know what kind of camera we had. The only drawback was that your fingers were in the way of the flasher poping up, which was a minor thing that you have to get used to. Other than that, we love the compact size of it.

I wanted a relatively small camera with a good zoom, motion stabilizer, Wi-Fi or Blu tooth - and good ratings. In searching Amazon I kept going back to this one. After reading the ratings, the issue some people had with short battery life appeared to be a non-issue because the problem was actually the sensor, not the battery. And newer cameras have already been fixed. So, after taking a lot of pictures I love this camera!! Zoom & stabilizer is far better than my expectations. Was visiting Campbell River, B.C., Canada, and took great pictures of cruise ships going down the inside passage and also the light house on Quadra Island several miles away. The cruise ships were also a few miles off shore and I could fill the frame and still had more zoom left. Also, I took quite a few action shots of my great-granddaughter pitching in a softball game. This camera stopped the action in every picture! If you want the movement look in your picture, you can make your own settings. I will probably always use my camera on Auto, but I did buy the $18 paper manual which covers everything the camera will do in 198 pages. I have read a lot of the manual and got a lot of useful information even for "Auto" users like me. I LOVE MY CANON POWERSHOT SX280HS.
