Got it quickly and loving using it "For the most pictures only"!! I should have read more about the problems with the battery management while using the movie mode!I have the same problems that many others have had with the movie mode kicking the battery management logic out the window and although the battery has a full charge and can not get any more "CHARGED", the camera's battery management logic says that the battery is "LOW" and flashes the red battery indicator, then shuts the camera off shortly into starting to record in movie mode.. VERY VERY UNSATISFIED WITH CANON FOR THIS!!!! CANON knows about this and can fix it but have not yet!! They claim that the fix is available for download in a firmware update for this camera. I did the download and firmware update immediately after testing and confirming that this condition was a problem in my camera, but the successfull firmware update from their website DID NOT FIX my camera's problem! There are many other people who have experienced the same thing with their cameras.So, other than not having a useful movie mode at all, it seems to be a great camera which I would easily give 5 FULL STARS for, but I absolutely can not with Canon's blaightent disregard for consumer satisfaction for those of us purchasing this camera and wanting to use the movie mode. Canon has received TONS of feedback on this issue, but has yet to actually FIX the problem!! They advertise this camera as having awesome video capability, but did NOT deliver! SHAME ON YOU CANON!!!

I bought this camera from Best Buy before seeing the one star reviews for it. Usually I ignore those, but everyone seemed to be having the same problem with the battery on video mode, I figured I might want to pay close attention to how the camera behaved. I wanted to try the camera out for a whole day and see if it gave me the same issues that others were getting. I used it pretty heavily for almost an entire day and was almost convinced it wasn't one of the defective ones. I've owned a lot of Canon cameras in the past and all of them have incredible battery life, so I figured one day of heavy use should kill the entire battery. By the end of the day it was still showing a full charge. That is until I turned it to video mode and the battery was then completely drained. Based on the other reviews, I'm not going to take my chances and see if the problem goes away or gets worse. I'm returning the camera today and will probably go with another brand.

I have owned cameras in the PowerShot line as well as DSLRs. I purchased this camera to replace an aging PowerShot for everyday use for my family.Relative to other point-and-shoot cameras I have owned it is amazing. It is on par with my old DSLR from seven years ago. If you just want to point and shoot it does a great job of that.The camera is in the SX family meaning extended zoom, which it does very well. It has a maximum zoom of 500mm equivalent @ f/6.8. That is a pretty reasonable f-stop at deep zoom, especially when comparing the costs. For comparison, the off-brand Sigma DSLR lens for Canon cameras that reaches 500mm @ f/6.3 costs just over $1000, or much more for on-brand lenses. The picture quality isn't as good as a much more expensive DSLR+Lens set up for deep telephoto, but the results are still more than adequate for using on the web professionally.The camera is full featured. The GPS and auto-tagging is nice for camping and backpacking, or whatever form of travel you are in to. My teens love some of the features like auto-detecting when everyone is smiling and automatically taking a picture, the wink-to-self-timer, and the miniatures mode. Sunsets and flowers look incredible when 'extra vivid' is turned on.Now the down side.Canon chose a tiny battery to fit in the tiny case. From an aesthetic viewpoint this makes sense. They want it small, lightweight, travel size. They want it to fit in a pocket.However, considering the primary use as a travel and camping camera this makes much less sense. Yes, the camera must be conveniently small, but not by sacrificing usability. Recording video goes from a fully charged fresh battery to the camera powering off in about 30 minutes. Leaving the camera on while you walk a trail and take photos gives you slightly more than one hour of battery life.If you are going camping or backpacking or traveling without a battery charger, plan on going through at least one battery pack per day, possibly more. The battery packs are not very expensive (relatively) which is a good thing because you'll need them.

Enough said about how good this compact camera is in the other reviews. Only two quick comments: It is an excellent compact zoom camera complimentary to my SLR camera/lens collection on the road for quick shots (photo & video) without lens changing. Case Logic DCB-302 Compact Case provides good protection and a perfect fit with room for extra battery and SD card.Update 5/8/2013: Per Canon technical support, the battery inside the camera cannot be charged via USB port like your cell phone when connecting to PC or outside USB power source.Update 5/13/2013: When using "AUTO" on the dial as well as ""AUTO" ISO" in "P", "Tv" and "Av", the ISO is automatically selected from 80 to 1600, not to 3200 or 6400. To manually select ISO 3200 or 6400 in "P", "Tv" and "Av", you need to select "FUNC. SET" and then choose the 3200 or 6400 under the"ISO" list.Update 5/19/2013 The flashing "low battery" warning in the video mode is indeed a design fault of the battery indicator not the battery itself. With a freshly charged battery, I can take either around 200 photos or about 30 minutes video (1080p 30fps). The low battery warning comes in about 2 minutes into the video shooting after some zooming.Update 5/20/2013 Per Canon technical support, Canon is trying to resolve this "low battery" warning issue in the video mode. Decided to return this wonderful camera. Will buy it when the issue is resolved.Update 6/5/2013 Canon just published a firmware update for SX280 to fix the low battery warning issue in the video mode at this web link: ([...] Click on "Drivers & Software". Select your computer's Operating System and OS Version. Click on "Firmware". Download the firmware zip file and unzip the file. Follow the instruction in the PDF file to update the firmware.Update 6/7/2013 I repurchased a new SX280 with the hope that the low battery warning issue has been fixed by this firmware update. I updated the new camera to the new firmware 1.0.2.0 from 1.0.1.0 following the procedure in the PDF file. The premature low battery warning in the video mode for the updated SX280 has improved but not fixed.

I bought this camera less than 5 months ago, along with the squaretrade warranty.lately, it keeps telling me that my battery needs charging, even when I know it is fully charged. I have to open the battery door and play with it, then it starts working again. A few pictures later...the camera again tells me the battery needs charging again. I open the battery door, play with it, and it starts working again. this happens every few pictures. I wanted to exchange it for a new one, but amazon won't take it back because the 30 day return time is over. the squaretrade warranty I bought, cancelled my warranty, and refunded the warranty price...even though I did not request it to be cancelled..nor refunded. my request was to replace my defective camera, but that hasen't happened..so now I am stuck with a defective camera

I want to inform people that I had the same exact issue in movie mode with the battery indicator AFTER the firmware update. Not only did the red indicator show up seconds after I switched into movie mode, but 2 seconds after the red indicator flashed, the camera SHUT off -- costing me the shot of a lifetime! I'm very disappointed that the firmware did not address this issue. I returned the first camera and was told it had a faulty battery charger (that came with the camera), so I was issued a new camera and charger. The camera also comes with one battery, so I bought 3 extra batteries and another charger due to the poor battery life (a separate issue from the battery warning in movie mode). While on vacation, I only used one of the chargers (didn't need to charge 2 batteries at a time), but was constantly charging one battery at a time due to the poor battery life. Even with all of this equipment and the firmware update, I still had problems. I wouldn't have cared if only the red indicator had flashed (and yes, it was a fully charged battery), but the main problem was that the camera shut itself off!! Sure, the camera took great photos in photo mode but I couldn't deal with the battery issue which obviously was not resolved so took the second camera back as well. It's too bad that Canon can't get the issue resolved because I would have kept the camera otherwise. I was even considering getting the older version of this camera, the SX260, but read that it also had a really short battery life (just not the movie mode issue). I don't really want to have to constantly charge batteries so will see if Canon improves the battery life (as well as the battery issue in movie mode) with the next version of the camera, whenever it comes out.

I have had several small auto focus cameras and this one is by far the best. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is that it does not come with a User Manual. It comes with a CD that contains the user manual and you can download a PDF but it's 197 pages - not something you want to be dragging around with you. I called the company to find out if there is such a thing as a printed manual and they said no and were not terribly apologetic. So if you just want to use the camera in Auto mode which is pretty good most of the time or if you have a very good memory and can memorize the ins and out of all the features in the Camera User Guide that comes on the CD, you'll love this camera. In my opinion, it would be worth a few extra dollars to have a small users guide you can carry with you.

After reading all of the negative reviews, I was very hesitant to take a chance on this camera. I purchased a Canon Powershot SX500, and ironically my sister bought this camera. We both took some pictures and compared them. I tried using her camera to test how fast it was, how I liked the feel of it in my hands, etc. The end result was I returned the SX500 two days after I bought it and bought the SX280, and I have never regretted my decision. I wanted to wait until after our summer vacation before posting a review because I knew I would be using it under all different conditions and that would be a great test of how good this camera is. The end result: I would recommend it to anyone. It is super fast, I can go from the camera being off to the camera being on and taking a picture within seconds. It focuses quickly and produces sharp pictures with beautiful colors. I love the 20X zoom as well, it gives me so much flexibility in taking pictures. It performs well in low light and outdoors. Battery life is great - I took pictures all day long while on vacation and the battery lasted until we. I have also used it to record video and have not run into the memory issues that other reviewers have mentioned. The only negative I can find with this camera is the positioning of the flash - it is right where you hold on to the camera with your left index finger on top of the camera, and it can surprise you when the flash starts moving up. However, given all of the positives on this camera, I can live with that. The manual is lengthy but worth reading - there are lots of options with this camera, and it is helpful to be familiar with them.

I had the SX260 and loved it. It was by far the best camera for concerts if you're not able to bring in a DSLR. Most venues allow these Point and Shoot cameras.I haven't had a chance to use the SX280 in a concert, but will be soon. The better image processing and speed should make this camera just that much further ahead of the competition.Unfortunately, the WiFi features on this camera aren't very well thought out, and as such, I'm still using an Eye-Fi card with it.The problem with the WiFi is that it seems to have been developed by a marketing group as opposed to engineers working with the camera in the field. So sure, the WiFi does 3 buckets of tasks:1) Share photos via email and social networking sites like Facebook.2) Sync photos wirelessly with your computer and the Canon Cloud service.3) Transfer photos to your iOS or Android device.So ya, those buckets hit the buzzwords just fine, but unfortunately, very little thought was given to the workflow of the device as compared to the workflow of the Eye-Fi and how people will want to use it.It's unfortunate, because the one weak link in the Eye-Fi is that it's not integrated into the camera itself, and thus always feels in various ways like it's a bit of a hack. So I was really looking forward to the SX280 and the integration of WiFi into it.Unfortunately, Canon kind of blew it. The biggest problem is that you have to choose between shooting mode and transfer/sync or mode. When you're shooting, WiFi is completely off. So unlike the Eye-Fi, you can't just sit there and shoot while your images get transferred to your mobile device. So the process is shoot, stop shooting, fiddle with the camera, fiddle with your phone, select images to transfer, wait, go back into shooting mode and resume taking more pictures. This compares to the Eye-Fi where you set everything up and shoot while pictures transfer automatically.Hopefully Canon chages this in a firmware upgrade.Until then, it's important to note that this camera still is best in class (super zoom compact P&S).

If you plan to shoot video with the SX280, be aware of a nasty design glitch that will start flashing the low-bat icon just seconds after starting to shoot video. A full battery will last about 15 minutes before the camera shuts down. Canon didn't solve this with firmware 1.0.2.0, unfortunately.Now with that said, the SX280 is an excellent camera for pictures. I chose it because of the GPS, the Wifi, the 20x zoon and the Digic6 processor. The camera supports A-GPS: through WiFi you update a satellite position database from a server @ Canon, which speed up the satellite detection process. A nice bonus feature is the GPS logger, that will record your location even with the camera turned off. You can download the log and map your track on Google Earth.One sad surpise: no Panorama mode: no sweep and not even the old manual mode of the old 720is to stitch the photos on the PC.Another sad one: no HDR modeI miss these two features that are there on the Sonys HXxxVs compact models.

I have always used Cannon cameras and I cannot say enough good things about the company. So I bought this recently because of wifi and ability to upload to social media. The camera takes great pictures, the iPhone app works fine, although it uploads only one image at a time. But the browser was the biggest disaster. I installed it on my Mac. The launcher typically has an icon for a software. Cannon has many little apps within one folder I have to find the right icon that would open the browser. The first time I open, it quits. This happens every time I open it. I connect the camera, but do not see an image of my picture. I try to import it, but I cannot. This browser will not import any other picture already on my hard drive either. Needless to say, I have failed to use this camera for uploading photos anywhere. So don't buy it if you intend to use the browser. Just so everyone knows, I was reading the pdf manual before installing the browser. I wish Amazon would just take this product back so I can buy something other than cannon. On the Cannon web site the browser has one star from 11 reviewers. So I am not the only one with these views.There is a firmware issue that shows battery low in video mode. I was able to download and address this issue quickly. Not trying to ding Cannon, but the poor quality of browser is just shocking. I cannot believe that the brand I have so respected could let me down so completely.IGNORE WHAT I SAID ABOUT THE FIRMWARE. I TURNED ON THE MOVIE MODE AND THE LOW BATTRY LIGHT JUST CAME ON. WOW! I ALSO NOTICED THAT ANOTHER REVIEW HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER UPDATING THE FIRMWARE. RETURNING THE CAMERA. JUST PRINTED THE RETURN SHIPPING LABEL.

I purchased this camera before a two week vacation to Europe. I have had three previous models of Canon PowerShot cameras, but wanted to take advantage of the 20x zoom, Wi-Fi and GPS features. I read dozens of reviews on Amazon describing the low battery indicator issue while taking videos and heard there was a firmware update so I decided to give it a shot anyway. The short review is that the camera is great, the wi-fi feature made it easy to transfer photos to my tablet and device while I was without my computer and the GPS worked fine if I gave it time to get a good signal. On a fully charged battery, the camera would show the low battery indicator after 30-60 seconds of video. I later applied the firmware update and saw the same results. It may have extended the battery indicator issue to 2 minutes, but in any case, it's a real issue. I had three fully charged batteries on my trip and was able to survive. I was taking a video of the sunset one evening and if you could believe it, the camera shutdown a second or two before the sun went down. Powering the camera back on and using photo mode you'll see the battery is either fully charged or two thirds charged.I would recommend this camera to anyone who has used Canon PowerShot cameras in the past and does not use the movie mode. If you are a new customer or frequently take videos I would recommend that you look elsewhere or wait for a subsequent firmware update since the current one doesn't help.

I decided to purchase this camera because it has some nice advanced features yet is simple to use. My wife and I have been using the camera for several weeks now and are very happy with the quality of the pictures. Since we have two young children the sports mode and multi-shot feature work great to get those shots when we are trying to get multiple children to look at the camera and smile at the same time.The camera is a bit more bulky than most point and shots but the quality of the images and the extra features make up for it. The camera is definitely more than just a step up from using a smart phone camera. The low light shooting mode works great. The display is large and it is easy to preview pictures using it. I also like that the body is easy to hold and on the front there is a protruding piece that helps your grip. The 20x zoom is a nice feature. The stabilization feature is fantastic; so far I haven't messed up a photo due to a shaky hand.I do agree with other reviews that the pop-up flash can sometimes surprise you as it pops up just under your fingers. I have learned to keep my fingers behind it so when it does pop-up I don't need to change how I am holding the camera. To avoid the battery longevity issue, we purchased two extra batteries.One last note, this is the third Canon digital camera I've purchased. I have not had experience with other cameras but have helped family members copy images from their cameras to their PCs. From what I have seen, the software and cable Canon ships with their cameras make it easier for the average computer user to copy and to organize images on their PC.

I did my research on this camera and while many consumer reviews weren't favorable, various known professional reviews were. I admit that the zoom does make it slightly more difficult to get an excellent photo in lower light but really its not bad in comparison to many point and shoot cameras (plus you have the zoom when you need it). I particularly was interested in a camera that I could take with me and get shots of my kids and not have to lug around my Canon Rebel. This is definitely fitting the bill and I already have gotten excellent shots.Quite honestly I haven't tested out the camera. That's not why I bought the camera at all. I did buy the extra battery as recommended but haven't needed it yet. I would say if videotaping isn't really what you need this camera for then don't be scared to buy it based on previous reviews. Its a great investment at this price range with great options other than literally just pointing and shooting it!

Updated May 21st......Ok so the battery life on this is very bad..... Take a few pics, start taking video, the red light flashes and your lucky if you get a few minutes of video before your done for the day. Also I can not get used to the stupid location of this pop up flash. On the good side the picture quality is best in class for this type of camera but what good is picture quality if the battery doesn't last to let you take more then a hand full of pictures and video..... I'm bringing my review down to 2 stars for the battery life issue and pop up flash location....Original Review:I have a DSLR and wanted to get a good pocket camera when I didn't want to take the DSLR with me. I'm very pleased by the photos even at ISO 1600. The picture quality blows my ELPH 300 HS out of the water. The auto focus speed is very good for this type of camera and the videos seem fine. A few things that need to be changed. The flash location is horrible it will pop up and push your finger. For some reason it seems like most other high end point and shoots like the Sony RX100, Nikon P330 and Canon S110 have the flash in the same location. All I can say to the manufactures is put an LED flash in the body or something. I also would like to see the dial control for the different shooting modes on top like the old A series, S110 or Sony WX300. Another thing is the battery life is not very good. You may need 2-4 batteries if you are going to be taking pictures and videos all day. One other thing is this camera is missing some fun controls like the color swap and color accent. I don't no why canon took the features out. I always liked playing around with that on my ELPH 300HS. For the image quality I can live with the short comings and maybe Canon will update the software on it to get better battery life and add back some of the creative shooting modes. If Canon does that and takes out that stupid pop up flash on the next version of this camera it will be a perfect pocket zoom camera.

I purchased this camera for a 2 week Baltic Sea cruise. I had read the reviews about battery life, but I still thought I would be ok as long as I updated to the latest firmware. I was wrong. It is a nice camera, and the pictures from the trip turned out great. However, the battery required constant attention and I had to turn off the GPS (which was a feature I really wanted) to conserve as much power as possible. The mysterious flashing battery when filming was very annoying. When I did try to use GPS, I was disappointed with how long it took to find the satellites. I'm most disappointed that there were several evenings when the camera ran out of juice and we had to resort to camera phone pictures.Some of it is my fault, my previous point and shoot cameras had much much longer battery life. I should have known that new cameras with all these new features need a lot more power. I should have purchased an extra battery for the trip.That being said, I did use the WiFi feature to post a few pictures at every port and it was nice to have such a compact form factor. I like the camera, but I posted my review to warn others that are going on a long vacation to consider buying an extra battery.One other note: I updated the camera to the latest firmware available in July 2013, I cannot attest to whether or not the battery issues have been fixed in later firmware updates.

I bought this camera after reading many positive reviews on professional websites. They all highlighted the camera's fantastic picture taking ability, which I completely agree with. However, there is a huge flaw with this camera's battery. You will run into many situations where the battery indicator is reading empty but the battery is still fully charged. This would only be a minor inconvenience except that the camera will also shut itself off when it thinks the battery has died (even though you still have a full charge). This makes the camera completely unreliable and will cause you to miss many photo opportunities. I missed several shots on my honeymoon because the camera thought it was dead even though I just charged the battery!If you look hard enough at reviews, you will find this battery problem mentioned by a number of customers. Do yourself a favor and read through this 90+ pages of complaints about the battery issue on Canons website: [...]Please, learn from my mistake and avoid this camera.

I'm not a big techy, but I love this camera. Cannon's easy user friend set up helps makes taking pictures easy. I mostly put it on Auto and the pictures comes out great. Gave it to my sister for her trip to Paris and her pictures were amazing. Even in 20x zoom, the clarity was great.Haven't used it enough to tell you how it does at night or with rapid shots or in motion, but for a basic point and shoot, this thing is amongst the top.I would highly recommend a back up battery. When taking the HD videos, it does drain the battery relatively quick (no more than usual like my cell phone).

I've just received my second Canon PowerShot SX280 HS.The first one had the old firmware which caused the camera to shut down after a few minutes of use in video mode.I returned the camera to Amazon for an exchange. The new camera also has the old firmware. I called Canon Customer Support. The said to ship it to Canon to flash the new firmware, which would take care of the problem. I asked if I could do this myself. Their reply was "We do not recommend that."I am concerned about Amazon selling me this camera which is defective. This is a known problem, and has been well documented on Amazon. My mistake was thinking that enough time had gone by so that only the new firmware cameras would be in stock.The Canon web page has this posted:How to Identify Cameras that are eligible for the Firmware Update:Please check the serial number on the bottom of the camera.This firmware update is for products with the following serial numbers.Serial numberProducts whose sixth digit from the left is 2 or less[*****2******] , [*****1******] , [*****0******]I now have some accessories that will have to be returned. Unfortunately I bought a SquareTrade 3-Year Camera Accident Protection Plan for 39.96. I don't know if they will give me my money back.This has been an expensive and time consuming process which needn't have been. Amazon needs to stop selling the old firmware cameras.

I have small hands and it doesn't bother me but my hubby hates the flash location, He can't work the camera without his finger getting in the way. Bought the camera for a trip and it worked great, especially the video. Great small P&S camera. I did have 3 batteries fully charged with me at all times. This camera was the newer camera and didn't need the update but it still showed the battery low notice while filming. If I had just put in a new battery I ignored it and it was fine. If I had a battery I had been using for a while then I swapped batteries before filming. Often I didn't need to use more than 1 1/2 batteries per day taking lots of nighttime shots and video. It is not the perfect camera but for a small pocket camera that takes great pics it is just right. Only thing I missed was panaromic ability.

I do not know much about cameras, but this one is by far the best point and shoot I have owned. The images I was able to capture on a recent vacation were stunning. Like many have mentioned the battery light issue can cause issues if you try to shoot video with an already low battery. With a fresh battery I was able to shoot about 4 minutes worth of video and take about 100 pictures. I purchased a second battery as a back-up and never found myself in trouble. The video I took was at night and was very impressive. The stabilization worked very well. Night pictures were a breeze and came out very well. One setting I really liked with this camera was available when using flash in Aperture Priority Mode. The flash mode is called Slow-Synchro and it slows the shutter speed to brighten the background, I found it was best used if you were taking a photo of something in the shade that required flash while still capturing the scenery in the background. The time it takes to take a picture from the power being off is very quick. The only negative thing I can say about this camera is the location of the flash. I found I rested my left index finger in the same spot the flash pops up from. Once I condition myself to its location it shouldn't be an issue. I posted a few pictures this camera took from the vacation.

I was looking for a small camera that would fit on a belt holster for tourism, but would also take sharp pictures in the dim light of museums (including low-light rooms and ill-lit display cases). I bought an SX280 in May, 2013, and have now given it a challenging run through my local museum. It has a "discreet" setting ideal for this, since it suppresses the flash and all sounds. The camera can see better than I can in dim light, and it was able to zoom well for better close-ups of objects at the rear of a case than any camera I have used before. Impressively, it can move automatically into and out of macro mode as needed without my having to adjust anything, making it very easy to photograph an item and then its label without fiddling with the macro setting. The vertical leather case made for belt-loop use is less comfortable than a horizontal one, so it now lives in my old Coolpix case. The GPS feature is disappointing in that, so far as I can tell, coordinates are discoverable only when using the Canon software, which reads them from a separate log, so they are lost if you change the name or edit it with non-Canon software. The GPS was quite precise with some outdoor shots, but of course did not function indoors. There is no Bluetooth and I haven't bothered with the WiFi capacity. HDMI and USB ports allow uploading using non-Canon software (including Windows). Several reviewers have found the flash location a nuisance. I rarely use flash, but, trying it out, the position of the flash doesn't seem troublesome so much as the fact that one must apparently turn off the camera to make it retract again. (The instruction manual says one must not push it in manually.) In sum, for my style of tourism, this will probably turn out to be the best camera I have ever owned.

I bought this camera for my husband's birthday and we took it on our River Cruise through Holland and Belgium. The colors on the photos are absolutely amazing and we are so impressed by the zoom. I've never had a small point and shoot that does so well with the zoom feature. Crystal clear! Also, he took many pictures of the tulips and they are breathtaking! Beautiful close ups. Only one minor feature is that the pop up flash on it is where you usually hold the camera. Just a small adjustment to get used to though. Great buy for the money!

Bought the SX280 in December 2014. Experienced the same short battery life well documented in the reviews. One month later purchased Wasabi Power 3.7V 1300mAh 4.8Wh NB-6L batteries. The battery life is at least double and now adequate battery life. You still need to manage power draw such as WiFi & GPS. I only use WiFi when in a pinch otherwise will remove the memory card and install in computer. I don't use the GPS.The camera replaced a Elph 210. This camera takes superior images and has simple manual controls to adjust to special situations. The zoom is not grainy like the 210. All and all a great camera,fairly portable and takes great images at a reasonable price.Four stars for shipping with a crummy battery.
