Got this for fathers day so it will replace my Powershot S5 IS that is about 5 years old. The compact size was important to me since I found myself grabbing my wife's Canon point and shoot to take on vacation and family things so I didn't have to carry the full size camera along. Another factor is the ability to take HD video which will replace an 12 year old Panasonic video camera. I read that video is the weak point of the camera but whatever it does will be better than the old bulky Panasonic.Good things that I found so far:- Controls are mostly the same as our other Canon cameras which makes for a shorter learning curve.- Pictures taken so far have been really good quality with the default large file setting.- Auto mode does a good job of selecting the proper mode to use for the photo, but you can select manual if you want to take full or partial control.- Videos are easy to take with the dedicated button on the back of the camera. No settings to make - just point press the button and start filming.Drawbacks noticed so far:- Battery life appears to be short. In my first day of goofing around with the camera I drained the battery down in a couple of hours to getting the red flashing light warning. Mostly took videos and indoor flash photos so there was probably good reason for the battery complaining but I made a point to order a backup battery in case of emergency. What's strange is that once the camera turned itself off I tried turning it back on a couple of minutes later and it showed a fully charged battery icon and took photos OK but video gave the red battery sign after 30 seconds or so.- The camera has a problem with focusing when in the higher telephoto setting. I turned off the digital telephoto setting and found that the higher settings are really nice and will eventually focus but it does take a short period of time.- The pop up flash is going to be a problem until I learn how to hold the camera. It is located at the top front where you left hand holds the camera. If you finger is over it when it tries to come up it freezes the camera and you need to turn it off then back on to clear the problem which will slow you down a bit.Overall I gave it four stars simply because it is so compact and so feature packed with some minor drawbacks. Hope it will give me as much trouble free service as my old Canon S5 IS has.

This camera is great.We decided to replace on older, very inexpensive, point and shoot so that we could better capture pictures and videos of our kids as they grow. Our older camera could never capture the frantic movements of our kids in focus.The images you can capture with this camera are amazing. The clarity, contrast, and depth of colour have been a serious step up from our last camera, but a fatal flaw makes this camera useless to me.With the battery freshly charged, I took several minutes of video while zooming in and out to see if I could replicate the battery problem that everyone else has been discussing for the last year. At first, I though I may have gotten a keeper, but with anything other than a 100% fully charged battery, I can not get more than a few seconds of video before the battery indicator flashes red and the unit shuts down. Upon powering the camera back up, the indicator will display a full battery charge, but will die within seconds of attempting to film video.If you can get this camera cheaply, and do not expect to film any video, it may be worthwhile to you.I chose to return this camera and purchased the SX700HS instead.

I have been using Canon products for 30+ years. I have loved every single one of them and they last forever. I was REALLY excited to get this one for the zoom feature. This is the first time I've ever been disappointed in Canon and I wonder if their quality control is slipping.First of all, I paid almost $300 for mine, and now I see it for under $200. Not happy about that at all.Only a couple of months after purchase I started having memory card problems... I formatted several times and still got errors. I lost many pictures... days and days worth of shots, gone. I tried several different memory cards from different manufacturers and still got errors. I believe the camera even rendered one of my cards completely unusable at all anymore.After struggling with this for a couple of weeks, the memory card just stopped being accepted into the camera at all.I contacted Canon, they replaced the camera and were very quick about it, but the new one is still not perfect, and I am completely afraid to ever remove the memory card that's in there now because the new one also started having errors and issues with the card. I use the cord to get pictures off the camera now instead of removing the card, not my preferred way to handle my photos at all. I definitely miss the convenience of being able to just transfer the card to other devices.Just really super disappointed and I wonder if I'll buy Canon next time... after 30 years, it's going to be a bittersweet change if I decide to go with another company.

The battery life is too short even I update the newer version of firmware, especial when taking a video clip. ( I would not want to mention when time to use GPS.) I really like wifi function but it was not easy to setup this function. It requires the specific software in the CD which came with the camera. My CD Rom was out of service and tried to download this software from Canon website. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer this option for its customers to download after talking to its technician . So, I had to find another computer with a working CD rom to transfer this software to a portable hard drive, then installed into my computer. Quality Wise, my nephew's, who was 12 years old, panasonic Lumix was out of battery. I let him used my camera. He told me that my camera's quality was not good as his. So he would pass this offer. (We visited Grand Canyon National Park. We zoomed in to take pictures of the California Condors at the same time. I saw the difference between these two cameras after I let him to take the photos of California Condors with my camera. That was why he rejected to use my camera in San Diego Safari Park. I hate to admit this truth.) I used this camera for traveling 45 days with 9,000 miles driving on the road. Battery life is very important. It is really bad that I can't charge my battery through car charger with an usb cord. Canon wants you to buy an additional car charger. I dislike this idea and hope it would consider to make their products which can be charged with car charger without spending extra money. Pro: It is light and handy comparing to my canon 40D with extra battery compartment attached it . Its photo quality is not bad. Wifi connection is the best. 20X room is great. I was amazed and surprised by this function. I don't have to carry my 200-400mm telephoto lens to spot on someone playing in the water without clothes. It is kind of scary that how people loose their privacy.My original idea was to take birds' or wild animals' photos with this function.

I have had this only a week and I am returning it and replacing it with a Canon SX260 HS. I took the camera to Disney and went through 3 batteries and could only get 15 minutes max of video time on a fresh battery. Still images were not a problem. According to the Canon website if the camera has the sixth digit of 3 or higher in the serial number, the camera should not have the battery issue. I did the Firmware update prior to using the camera. The camera said the firmware was up to date and the Serial number is 3 in the sixth digit. From my recent experience the battery issue with this camera is not corrected. As soon as I zoomed the battery indicator went from full to red empty. I will say the the 1080p video that I was able to get is excellent when I viewed it on my 55" TV and the stills are great along with the long zoom it is in function a great camera. But the battery problem ruins the entire package. This is why I am moving to the Canon SX260HS. No battery problem. And the SX260 HS has the same zoom and other features but no Wi-Fi, which is no loss to me as. I have owned Canon cameras for 40+ years and am very disappointed that that Canon allowed a major flaw in a camera into the market. I have read reviews recently that there is an opinion that it is a hardware conflict problem not truly a software issue (I do not know this to be a fact). If it is truly a hardware conflict no amount of firmware updates will correct the battery problem. In conclusion, buy the Canon SX260 HS not the SX280 HS.

I bought this camera despite having read all of the reviews, some scathing, that complained about short battery life in the movie mode. I have to say that I don't take a lot of movies, but the few times I tried this I did find that it would shut down if the battery was not at full charge. So...having extra batteries handy is a neccesity. My theory is that there is so much functionality crammed into this small camera that there is little room for a battery of sufficient size to power it for very long in movie mode. If taking movies is your intention, then this is not the camera for you.That being said...the still photographs from this little camera are stunning. The CMOS sensor is very much better at shooting in low light conditions. It's a very feature rich little camera so I expect to have to update this review when I've had a chance to better familiarize myself with it's many capabilities.The need for extra batteries can't be overstressed though. There is a cheap two-pack of Wasabi batteries for this camera with an extra charger for under $20 available here on Amazon. This camera is an excellent point and shoot photo camera. If you're the kind of person that doesn't want to be troubled with settings and technical information, you just want a great shot of your kid playing soccer no matter where you are on the sideline, this camera will do that. Auto mode does an excellent job of choosing the appropriate settings regardless of conditions and it's hard not to get a decent shot (you know, unless you accidentally take a picture of your foot).That said, why the two stars? Video, that's why. IF you can manage to take a video, the quality is excellent. But don't count on being able to take one. The much publicized battery issues are perhaps undersold. With a fully charged battery, we often can't take a 10 second video before the camera tells us the battery needs to be changed and shuts off. It's effectively useless. Needless to say, we've missed some experiences that would've been nice to get a video of. At this point, we're resigned to having made a poor choice and not being able to take videos. Every digital camera I've owned in the last 12 years has been a Canon, but the next one may not be. Even with Canon's alleged fix via firmware update, the problem has not been resolved. So, we're intensely disappointed with our purchase, but the pictures are great. Canon, if you read this and would like to make it right, that would go a long way toward restoring my brand loyalty. I would say that if you ONLY intend to take pictures, this camera is not a bad option. If you have even the remotest desire to take video, get something else.

I just got purchased this camera January 2014. I read some review on a battery problem, but it was said the latest firmware fixed this issue. IT DID NOT. I got the camera, charged a new battery and put it in. On still shots, all worked fine, but as soon as I hit the movie button, the battery light started to flash, and the camera turned off. I turned that camera back on in still mode, and it showed full battery. All worked fine until you use the movie mode. I contacted canon, and they had me send my brand new camera back. What a pain for a brand new camera..I just got the camera back. they said it was a faulty board of some kind and they replaced it. Put my battery back in and. FLASHING BATTERY light. I power cycled it, and full battery symbol till i go movie again.Canon's have been great for me, but this one is VERY disappointing.. this was a know problem last year, and yet they still keep shipping cameras.. They must have read the GM book about known problems!I charged the battery and the problem has stopped. Not sure if it just means as soon as my battery is slightly used it will have the error again or what..POOR SHOW canon.

I'd advise everyone to stay away from this camera until Canon comes up with a fix for its video issues. Even after doing a firmware update, the camera will show a low battery warning when shooting video and zooming in some cases. I've done some tests - here's what I found.Test 1 - Dial at Movie mode - 1280x720 - Full Charge (FC) -record for 5 minutes - zooming - No Problems.Test 2 - Dial at Movie mode - 1280x720 - FC - recorded for 30 minutes before shutting off. I did not try zooming - note 30 minutes is maximum.Test 3 - Dial at Movie mode - 1280x720 - FC - 26 minutes and Zooming - no problem.Test 4 - Dial at Movie mode - 1280x720 - 2 bars - this is just after Test 3. - around 20 minutes I got Red Low Battery Warning, but it continued recording to 30 minutes. Changing back to picture mode battery shows two bars.Test 5 - Dial at Movie Mode - 1920 x 1080 - FC - seemed fine until I started zooming around 20 minutes and got the RED Low Battery Warning. I'm wondering if using the higher HD settings needs more power - When I turned the camera off and on, it went back to 3 bars on the battery.Test 6 - Dial at Movie Mode - 1920 x 1080 - charge is less as this is right after Test #5. Zooming at one minute and I get the RED Low Battery Warning. Recorded to 24 minutes - so it appears that the Red flashing LightCamera and video setting-up feature that needs a little work is the ability to take a picture followed by a 4 second half video. What I don't like is that it won't take a flash picture in this mode and you can't see the screen during the 4 second video.doesn't mean much when recording video. When I move back to picture mode, I'm getting the Red Flashing Low Battery.Test 7 - Dial at Program mode - automatically changes to 1920 x 1080 for some reason - At 5 minutes - RED Low Battery Warning" - but it keeps recording to 4 GB limit - 23:51 minutes.Conclusion - even though you will be getting a Red Flashing Low Battery Warning, the camera will shoot 48 to 60 minutes of video depending on your HD settings.

I have always loved Canon cameras, but I do find that with each new generation of camera the controls get a little dumbed down and a little more restrictive. If you're looking to really get creative and control your shots, the SX280 can *probably* do it, but you'll want to read the owner's guide first. Having owned several Canon PowerShots over the last 10 years, I expected to be able to use the controls with no guidance. I guess I'm getting old, though, this wasn't intuitively obvious.I wanted the SX280 because of the 20x optical zoom and the WiFi GPS. I enjoy shooting on my iPhone because those pictures get geotagged so I can display them on a map, and I missed this whenever I shot with a "real" camera. The GPS works for some but not all shots, and it most certainly kills your battery. Definitely want to pick up one or two spares if you plan to go out shooting for more than an hour or two.When comparing pictures taken on the Canon to pictures taken on my iPhone, the Canon's pictures stand out for their clarity and vibrant colors, which I have always appreciated about Canon cameras.The fact that I can beam these pictures to my iPhone or iPad (or other Wifi-enabled device) was a surprise treat, but it's definitely nice to get pictures off the SD card quickly and easily, without having to lug a laptop computer around.

While the specifications and photographic performance of this camera are amazing, the well-reported battery issue still exists, at least on my copy.After researching this camera extensively, I decided to give it a try as most reports of a battery indicator issue were dated from summer to fall of 2013. A couple of recent reviews indicated that the problem may no longer exist. I purchased the camera on 2/16/2014 and fully charged the battery before using. For the first hour or so, I had no issues - frequently cycling between various photo modes and video. However, then the issues began. Just like other reviewers have described, the issue is not so much battery life, but the discrepancy of the battery life indication between photo mode and video mode. The charge indicator can show nearly a full charge in photo mode but when you start recording a video it will drop to below half and turn red. The camera did turn off on a couple of occasions due to low battery, but when powered up again, the battery indicator showed a healthy charge.Based on about one day of testing I concluded the camera simply could not be trusted and returned it. This would have been my fourth Canon camera, after enjoyable experiences with an S400, an SD900, and a Rebel T1i.

Just purchased this camera to use on a trip where I didn't want to carry a large camera (Canon 5D), and have used a Powershot S90 for times when I didn't want to carry a full body camera. For this trip we wanted a second pocket camera and I expected we could use this one with similiar results - but I was mistaken.On the plus side, it was compact as expected and the screen is easy to see in daylight.And the 20x zoom really gets you close, but hthe camera is so small and light, that hand giggle makes it difficult to hold the subject steady in the frame.But the detracters for me were:1) at first I didn'tice the images were set to include the date/time. So all of the pictures from the first two days have the timestamp on the image - and it can't be removed without using photo editing software to brush it out - and it's well into the image, so cropping isn't really an option.2) only shoots in jpg format - no raw option available.3) burns through batteries. If you use this camera, be sure and bring an extra battery.4) when shooting video with it, after about 10 seconds, it would stop recording with the message "low battery", even when the battery was fully charged.Only the Basic Manual is provided in print. To access the full user manual, you need a pc. So I couldn't reference it while out on the trip,I wouldn't buy this camera again. I'll give it to our 6th grader for a fun camera.If all you take are snapshots, and need to replace your instamatic 126, then this is probably an OK choice. But if you're looking for

I now have to admit that the popup flash is in the absolutely worst place possible. Even when I try to avoid placing my finger on it I still cover it. I can't figure out how to manually prepop the flash up and the only other way to hold that side of the camera is to put my thumb on screen and finger on front of camera body. Less than ideal for sure and leaves thumb print all over view screen. It's almost like nobody on Canon design team ever even snapped a photo with this camera in low light conditions.As for GPS and Wifi, well the controls are so far embedded into the menu system I can't see these as being easy to use and I have given up. I guess I also didn't realize Bluetooth was what I really wanted rather than Wifi. I can't transfer a photo from SX280 to iphone 5 in field because I don't have a router in the field. Argh. My iPhone has GPS, Wifi, and Bluetooth so why leave bluetooth out of SX280 Canon?The SX280 also needs a touch screen to make menu selections logical. I know I paid way more for my iPhone 5, but I also like it way more. The iPhone 5 came with 32 Gig of memory preinstalled rather than no memory at all like this SX280 requiring me to make a trip to the local Walmart to get $30 memory card.About the only thing I can do on this point and shoot camera that I can't already do on my iPhone 5 is optical zoom and I am not sure that functionality alone is worth keeping this superficially desireable purchase just for that feature.The battery is also a problem in that I can't use off-the-shelf AA lithium batteries from Walmart or Walgreens etc. like I do with my last Canon camera. I would really rather have a larger camera body with room for AA replaceable batteries and a place to hold the camera.My complaint with Canon's menu design is that it changes depending on whether I turn the camera on with the ON/OFF button or with the Blue right arrow in a blue box button. If you use the ON/OFF button followed by Menu button you get two categories: Camera icon and Tools icon. But if you use the Blue Arrow button followed by the Menu button you get three categories: Blue Arrow icon, Print icon, and Tools icon. This is confusing. Make Menu the same no matter how I get there and make it touch screen too.

This compact camera takes great snapshots. I love the zoom. Overall I am happy with the camera - except for the location of the flash. The flash pops up in the exact spot where I am inclined to place my index finger when holding the camera ready to shoot. The flash pops up and even pinched my finger (and wouldn't let go) one time so far. Well, that's one way to remember to hold the camera without placing your finger in that spot! Ouch! The manual is very clear about explaining how to position your hands for picture-taking. Can't blame the camera or the manual, just the design.Update (6 weeks later): I was taking pictures of my little grandchildren last night and stopped to chat. The camera was still on and in my hand. The camera had then turned itself off - without warning - and in the process, retracted the flash and pinched my index finger which apparently was in the wrong place at the wrong time! I had to yank my finger free - with quite a bit of pain.I am in the market for a new camera! :(

I have used Canon pocket cameras for several years, and I wanted to purchase one with WIFI. I read with interest many posts saying the firmware may need to be updated so I was prepared for that. My new camera did, in fact, flash that the battery was depleted when I tried video. I downloaded the newest firmware and had to call Canon service because I was still getting camera low signal for video. Photos were fine, the problem was just if I was attempting video.After some time on the phone with Canon I was told that my camera was defective and I could either send it back to Amazon or send it to Canon for a few weeks repair. I just paid over $300 for a new camera and a spare battery, and I don't want to send it for repair, especially since I haven't used it yet. So, I returned it to Amazon for replacement. I will come back and edit this review once I get the new camera and test it.Updated 11/21/13The replacement camera was quickly shipped by Amazon.com and I cannot say enough good things about how well they handled this replacement. I am happy to say that the second Canon camera works and I am very happy with it. The software on it was the most recent version when it arrived in the box and I didn't have to do anything except charge the battery and use. However, at last check the Canon app for my iPhone was not compatible with the latest iPhone software. After a call to Canon support, I was given a workaround to make the camera WIFI talk to my phone, and it works, but there is still work to be done by Canon before I can give this camera 5 stars.

I purchased the camera for my wife last week knowing about the battery issue and also knowing that the firmware update "fixed" the issue. Here's my experience:Camera Review1) My wife wanted a simple point and shoot Canon camera. I picked this Canon camera over the Elph or one of the other canon cameras because of the DIGIC 6 processor, the superior zoom and the customer reviews saying they love the pictures from the camera.2) The picture quality is beautiful which is why we went with this camera. The zoom and the image rendering is nothing short of amazing! Even in dark light when the display seems to pixelate, the flash kicks on and the picture is terrific. We love the momentary review option and like that we can turn that feature off or increase the time. There's almost no lag between taking several pictures in a row unlike other cameras. We couldn't be happier with the photo options on this camera.3) Video is smooth and excellent. The slow motion feature is ok.Setup process1) The battery issue on our camera identified itself immediately when switching to video mode. Just switching to the video mode, the battery light would blink red and within 3 seconds (not even recording anything) would power off the camera on its own. Follow the instructions on the Canon site to upgrade the firmware to 1.0.2.0.2) After upgrading I still noticed the battery issue. I read in one of the forums to take out the battery and pull out the memory card and leave them out for at least 20 minutes after upgrading. This hard battery out power off fixed the battery issue and allowed the camera to work correctly.3) I encountered a number of problems setting up the wifi on the camera. The camera would connect to my WPA2/PSK router, but wouldn't get an IP address. After much trial and error, I manually set the IP information on the camera instead of using the automatic setting and the camera wifi worked correctly and connected to post to facebook, link to our Apple laptop, iPhone or Android phone.

I had a few Canon cameras.Of all cameras that I met until today, this is the only one I really loved.It took me less than a minute to decide that I like it and I only appreciate it more now.True, Full HD encoding eats up the battery. The camera also eats up battery because the zoom is so fast.You know what? I like it. I want my camera to respond fast. I want it to eat a tiny bit more battery and keep the GPS on all the time.Canon, don't apologies for this camera. It is like a sports car. Fully featured, highest possible performance, but not built for economy mode.My previous Canon camera needed the battery replaced every few weeks. I'll buy a whole pack of batteries and still keep this new one.I tried the camera and all the new features during a trip and still needed to replace the battery pack only once a day. No kids on that trip so less pictures but I kept the camera running for long periods of time just going over all the features and settings.I like:Flash pops out automatically and also pops back in automatically!WIFIGPSClock uses GPS to sych (but not the timezone...)Full HD Recording (60fps if in video mode, needs better light condition)Slow 240fps video shootingExtremely high quality in the dark and noise reductionAutomatically takes multiple shots to produce a single high quality picture in near darkness conditionsCan't see shakes in long exposureGreat zoom!Very fast responseVery fast zoomFace DetectionFace Recognition!!! Will automatically know who is in the picture and add name tagHDMI outputTook me a day to find out that there is an extra dial around the control buttons...Bottom line, if you want good battery life buy another camera.This device is for high performance, high quality, highly featured. Like I said, sports car.

This camera is by far the Best one I have owned. I use to have the PowerShot SX110 then went to a Nikon Coolpix S9100. Was not impressed with the Nikon. It took some good pictures but did not have the versatility and quality of the SX280. The image stabilizer in the Canon is superior to the Nikon and the Image Processor is way better also. The DIGIC 6 Image Processor captures your picture with Stunning and True color. With the Nikon I was always adjusting for brightness, not so with the Canon. This camera also has the capability to take time exposed photos. Making for great night shots. Also the program capabilities allow you to adjust for a particular settings, such as Vivid Red for sunsets or Vivid to make the color of your picture stand out. Truly a Superior Camera for the price and capabilities. If you wish to spend a little more the PowerShot SX700 is identical to this camera but has a 30X zoom. Also a great camera for the price.

I have been using Panasonics exclusively for several years now and on numberous vacations. I have been happy with them and the zoom (I have both 20 and 25 zoom cameras). I guess after what I had been using the Panasonics were so much better. I bought the Canon on a whim because I liked the pics a friend had sent me with his Canon PowerShot. Well, The ZOOM on the this little red Canon is head and shoulders above the zoom on the Panasonic Lumix. I could not believe the difference. My thoughts of Canon would difficulty to learn to use, but I'm finding I was wrong. Interesting setting "Fish-Eye" takes you to some Vivid color settings and some other interesting effects Toy, Miniature, Monochrome, Soft. Not sure I'll use any but the the Vivid Color but for someone these setting will be fun.This camera is only a 20 Zoom. I can't imagine what a higher zoom with Canon would be…X-ray! ;-)) I'm going to investigate more options with Canon.Oh, yes..the reason I gave it 4 stars…I had read the battery life on Video was bad but I noticed I need to put in a new battery after just shooting still pictures. My Panasonic is still a full charge and I have been taking the same comparison pics with each camera. So I think you might need 2 extra batteries if you use this camera out for a day in the woods.

Camera takes great pictures. I also used Panasonic ZS20 and Canon was better and more accurate in picture quality.I take about 100 pictures a week and I was always a fan of Canon for clarity.This camera's pop up flash is annoying and you need to turn the camera off and on again if your hand accidently prevented the flash from coming up all the way.It's kind of heavy for point and shoot camera.One thing I noticed about Canon is that when I take about 20 pictures continuously shot after shot with flash on it will lag for 10 seconds before the next shot. If you take a shot every 1-2 minute it's not a problem.This was true for all my previous Canon point and shoot camera. I go through about 1 camera per year. When I called Canon they told me it was my sd card speed.I changed it to Sandisk extreme class 10 and it still caused the lag. I will not buy Canon again for this problem.I take many indoor pictures for work and this irritates me since I have to wait. If you turn the camera off and on it disappears.One thing I want to point out is that Canon customer service is excellent. Panasonic SUCKS!!! They have no knowledge about the product.

I bought this camera as a gift for an adult child, but have been testing it out before giving it. Let me say that I use a DSLR and have not had a point & shoot for years, so some of my problems is simply inexperience with modern point & shoot bodies. The positives: I've found the picture quality is very good and have not had the battery problems noted by others. It's a very nice size and can easily be slipped into a pocket and carried. I sometimes don't hold it very steady (see a "hate it" item below), but the image stabilization works well. Now, the things I hate: The video record button is located where my right thumb tends to rest as I hold the camera to take a shot. So, many time now, I've started video accidently.... aarggg!, Same issue with the flash. My left index finger, while framing a picture, naturally rests on the top corner of the camera, on top of the flash. When it pops up into my thumb I have to start the framing process over. If I anticipate the flash, holding the camera is not intuitive or comfortable. Finally, I don't take photos with a phone, so keeping the camera steady at arms length is difficult. The person receiving this (if I keep it) does take photos with an iphone, so that probably won't be an issue for him. Overall, I would not keep this phone for my own use. I will see if the adult child has the same problems I've noted.

SX280 review:I had the Canon sx230, I liked it's performance but the lens protector got bent and would not always close and open all the way without my finger helping. So I looked for a replacement. I shoot a lot of action videos (Karate Tournaments) but I want a camera that can fit in my shirt pocket and the sx230 did a great job. I shot video in over a dozen events, beautiful results. This time I wanted HD with 60fps for better stills that I could grab from the video as well as even better video. I looked at Sony, Nikon and Canon. I bought the Canon SX280. It's faster on the stills (turning ON and shutter button reaction time) the 30fps video is great.Problem is no one tells you that using HD 60fps video must have extremely bright lighting and that your SD card will get used up in half the recording time. The card is no big problem I bought a 32GH class 10, but the lighting is a factor. I was indoors at hotel ballroom for a tournament and there was not enough light for 60fps, it was quite noticeable in the LED screen. I shot in 30fps. I have a feeling that only in the Outdoors will I get enough light for 60 fps. All in all, I still needed a new camera and the SX280 was the right choice for me.

First - I'm not an expert. I'm just a novice using a camera. I usually pick it up, turn it on, point and shoot. In my opinion, this is a great camera. The wifi is cool - nice to be able to upload images as desired. The GPS is cool either for posting photos to sites like Google Earth or just for your own organization. The battery life isn't a great as cameras without those features because, frankly, just like anything else the more bells you ring the more juice it takes. Still, it seems adequate for most needs and it's pretty darn easy to carry an extra battery.Things I particularly like: With a good SD card, the camera is very fast. I have some older cameras that require you to anticipate and time the shot. This may not be like the best SLR cameras in terms of speed, but in most cases, it's very quick. It has a great zoom and produces amazingly clear photographs even when shooting handheld at maximum optical zoom. I was very impressed. It also handles low light shots better than anything I know of in it's price range. I had bought the SX260 last Christmas and was very impressed with it. This one does just as well, slightly better in low light and the extra features (GPS/wifi) make it a winner.

I was so looking forward to purchasing this camera as I have owned several Canons and this looked to be the best point-and-shoot so far. It had so many good reviews, I was so disappointed to apparently get a lemon.The first day I used it (on a fully charged battery), the battery indicator light started flashing when I used the video. I looked up the problem and found this complaint on one of the Canon forums. It sounded like a glitch that could be ignored. But after about a week, not only did the battery indicator flash, the camera would shut down while using video. It then started shutting down every time I used the zoom to take a photo. I took out the battery, recharged, but the problem only got worse. It became so I could not even take a photo, and then the camera wouldn't even turn on.It's been such a frustrating experience and it's upsetting to since learn that many other people have had this same problem. I've been a loyal Canon customer, but after this, I'm reluctant to buy another one of their cameras.
