I love Canon Cameras. I wanted to buy the ELPH 330, but because of Amazon price deals, I ended up buying the SX280 HS camera. I am sure I would have loved this camera, it is highly rated, but I was replacing my Panasonic ZS7 for one reason only, I wanted a wifi camera, which this one is. But, when I went to set up the wifi, I learned much to my dismay that wifi was only supported on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8. I had Windows Vista on my laptop and my camera could not see my laptop. (PC Tech lingo) This dilemma ended up being quite upsetting. The conclusion is I have to replace my laptop with a Windows 8 laptop so that I can now buy the ELPH 330 or whatever new camera that will be released by Canon.Canon was very remiss in hiding the fact that their wifi did not support Vista or other earlier versions of windows. On the back of the box it is written in the smallest print that Canon could possibly print this statement in, right under the statement saying virtually all versions of windows was compatible with the camera. So do they really deserve 4 stars for being deceptive, I will leave that up to you in your buying choices.

I dare say that the JPEG pictures were nearly as good as my Canon 60D. But without all the extra weight, hassle and "STEAL ME" appeal of the Cannon 60D.And to prevent the theft of this camera. I attached a necklace lanyard made out of 550 Paracord. I always wore the camera around my neck or looped around my belt. Needless to say it survived a very hectic non-stop month in Europe. And trust me the pickpockets did try!I'll leave the technical details to the others who have already done a marvelous job of drilling down through the nuances of the technical matter.This camera works works for me. It works really well. It takes fantastic pictures. And I use it on a regular basis for routine picture taking. But be warned that video drains the battery. So be prepared to take short videos or carry an extra battery or two (they're cheap so why not).Try it you'll like, it if not love it.___________________________Update: Just got back from Peru. Checkout the Video. Image is stable. Clear and bright with very good color. Very impressive for a little camera.

Okay... so I may not know how to fully take advantage of the awesomeness that this baby packs but I love it. The zoom is sick and the image quality is quite satisfying. Kinda awkward to have the power button and the shutter side by side, but other than that I really like this camera. Oh! the wifi capability is a super plus. I have the android app that communicates with the camera and I can review the pictures on my phone and share too. BTW.. I bought this one to replace another Canon PowerShot that got stolen which replaced an older model. You can say I have a thing for Canon.

Canon marketing or engineering made some odd choices in this 20x travel zoom. It competes with the Panasonic ZS30, Nikon S9200 and the Sony HX50.Pros.- The 12 MP sensor and lens combination is clear and sharp with snappy colors.- The digital zoom has fewer artifacts than the competition.Cons.- The camera tends to overexpose and blow out highlights. It doesn't offer automatic exposure bracketing which might avoid this problem (and will one day be available with the CHDK firmware mods).- No travel 20x zoom lens is going to offer wide apertures but this lens has a narrowest aperture of f/8. If you attempt to shoot a longer shutter and narrow aperture to increase your depth of field or blur water or action, the camera will blow out the scene.- The initial battery indicator bug in video appears to have been fixed, but when the 4GB file size limit is reached, this camera stops recording. If you notice this, you can push the video button and record another 25 min segment. But there will always be a gap. Every dash dvd avoids this as do the competition, but not Canon.- No sweep panorama option available on the competition and most cellphones.- The WiFi does not have remote control like the competition.- Focus and exposure is restricted to the center of the image unless the camera detects a face.- ISO is automatic restricted to 80 on long shutter speed shots. So if you shot in low light like a club show, the Canon makes it even more difficult to hand hold a useable shot.Overall, this could have been a much better camera with much better software. Canon made some choices which seriously detracts from the usefulness of this camera.

Sadly we didn't purchase our camera on Amazon so we don't have the benefit of their return policy! The previously mentioned problems with shooting video make this otherwise fine camera a huge disappointment. Considering all the shinning reviews this camera gets we have to wonder if Canon isn't paying people to write this pablum, unfortunately for us we read only those reviews. There are literally tens of thousands of complaints made to Canon and it's been posted in every camera forum on the internet.If you are interested in purchasing this camera please consider the following. Shortly after purchase our camera began having the well documented video problems, we were unable to video more than about one minute before camera shutdown (we had the GPS shut off). After contacting customer support we were instructed to do the firmware update. The support staff commented that this was the first they heard of this problem, apparently they have repeated that lie thousands of times, this too is posted all over the internet. The firmware update did not affect the length of video recording at all, no improvement. The last contact with Canon went unanswered, this too is apparently happening all over.Canon dropped the ball on this and now has abandoned the customer, we won't purchase another Canon product.

Positives about this camera include wonderful and vibrant photos which are truly a notch above similar sized point and shoot cameras.Now for the drawbacks: I am an international customer living outside the United States. Apparently this particular model was supposed to be distributed in the US only because I can't find it on the Canon website to register it. Also features like iPad sync doesn't work outside the US, partly because the iPad app on the App Store is only available to US customers.Batteries, oh the batteries. Luckily I purchased 2 extra batteries along with this camera. On a typical day, we take a lot of pictures so often times all 3 batteries can be spent in a day. This is further exacerbated when taking video. Much has been mentioned about the battery warning icon blinking when shooting video. My experience with this is similar and I therefore hope that this can be resolved by the manufacturer. If it is, then my other hope is that it is made available to international customers.

Im absolutely in love with this camera! I mean, Im still a beginner at cameras, but this is the perfect fit for me. I LOVE the special effects, there were varies of things to do on the camera. I love the zoom too, the camera says that it can only zoom up to 20, but actually it goes up to 40!!! I bought this on the 18th and the estimated shipping was on the 24th-27th, but it came on the 21th! Talk about fast delivery. I love this camera! YAY! I know I sound very unprofessional, but really the camera deserves some credit. The only reason why I rated this camera a 4 star was because the box didn't come with a USB cable. Instead the box was only the camera, the strap, its battery, and its battery charger which was a letdown. On the other hand, I might not need a USB cable anyway so why complain. It was a great match for me, and it should be for you too! :)

Like many customers out there, I had the low battery indicator problem. The June 2013 firmware update does not fix the problem. I don't know if it fixes an overall battery life problem or not. The problem isn't just that the low battery indicator flashes when trying to use the video function, the problem is that it will actually give you a warning, and then shut itself off while you are recording. I could probably have lived with the problem if it was just a matter of the indicator but when it just turns itself off, it is unreliable at best. I contacted Canon but got an unsatisfactory and useless answer back. I am obviously not the only person out there with this problem but they are not willing acknowledge it. They just said that the video function takes a lot of power and that it should be able to record 25 minutes of video on a full charge. It cuts out on me closer to 2 minutes...not 25. The battery is not dead. I can turn it back on and take pictures or even another short video clip but meanwhile, I just lost the chance at whatever I was recording when it decided to turn itself off. This is not acceptable. I am in the process of returning the camera now.As far as the camera itself goes, the picture quality is good, but not great. It tends to blow out most of the highlights. Macro and super zoom functions are great. I like the idea of this camera and what it is supposed to be able to do, but it just doesn't follow through. Very disappointed in Canon quality and their customer service leaves much to be desired.

Anti shake could be better. For a 20X zoom it's just not good enough. Auto focus is pretty good. Manual controls are excellent. Access to the features (and there are a lot of them) is very easy. Chromatic aberration is a bit of a problem in high contrast situations. Noise is very low even at medium high ISO. Overall, when this camera shoots a good picture (most of the time) it's a really good picture. I use this camera a lot, and I'm happy with the results about 90% of the time. An optical viewfinder would help a lot, but you just don't get those on compact pointy shoots any more. Tough to see what you are doing if you are shooting in bright sunlight. If you turn off the GPS, battery life is excellent. Like most pointy shoots it tends to blow out the highlights a lot, so cranking down the exposure compensation to -1/3 or -2/3 is generally necessary. Compared to the similarly featured Nikon that this camera replaced in my arsenal, this camera is a wonder. It gets most of the shots the Nikon can't. While this review may seem to emphasize the negatives, this really is a strong performer. Easy to use if you're a novice, lots of flexibility if you're not. I point out the negatives because they are there, but even so, they are not as bad as they could be, and are in the competitors I've looked at. I carry this camera in a pouch on my belt, so it is always with me and it sees a lot of action. Near as I can tell, it's as good as it gets for this kind of camera. Not perfect, but very good.

I like the picture quality, the Wi-Fi feature, the video quality, the flash etc etc...But what's the use when the battery system is so bad that it doesn't allow you take any videos at all. I am having the same problem as the others have mentioned in this forum already.Having this camera is like owning a fully loaded car which asks to refill the gas for every mile. With such a pathetic battery drain experience when you try to take videos, and so many reviews and feedback in several forums from numerous customers I don't even understand why Canon hasn't begun to do damage control.There is no way I will ever trust the Canon brand blindly before purchasing a product from them. I really appreciate Amazon for agreeing to give a full refund even though I just missed the return period. Amazon is truly amazing !!!

This camera is a fantastic camera - when it works. I bought this camera to replace my SX230, which was great for a long time.First SX280 worked well, and had the much discussed video low battery indicator issue, but I presumed that it just needed the firmware update, and hadn't got around to applying the fix. And to be clear, it doesn't just flash the indicator, it turns itself off almost immediately after starting to record video. I couldn't get more than 20 seconds of video. Then the unit failed after 3 weeks; screen flickered with a bunch of fuzzy lines, turned off and would never turn on again.Back to Amazon (who blew my socks off by having a replacement to my house on Christmas eve, 1.5 days!)Second SX280 seems to work well, with the exception of the video shutdown. I presumed that it just needed the firmware update, so I tried to apply it; but my camera doesn't need it, it has a serial number with the 6th digit of '3', meaning it ALREADY has the new firmware on it.Back to Amazon again.

I've only used this camera once so far, but I'm pleased with the pictures. My biggest concern was not having blurry pictures. Lo and behold none of them are blurry! And I LOVE the zoom! It zooms so far, I could spy on my neighbors if I wanted to! My only complaint with this camera is the size. It's a little too big for my old camera case that held the Nikon cool pix and another compact camera. And besides that, it's very heavy. Oh well I still love it and will deal with the size to not have blurry pictures!

So far I love it, great all purpose camera with HD video.Pictures and videos look great, zoom is good.Downsides:- the placement of the flash, where you normally hold the camera.- implementation of the wireless features: you have to go through a cumbersome setup to get Facebook etc configured, and at some point Facebook upload stopped working so I had to do this again.- the wireless range is not great (compared to an iPad for example),-if you want to transfer your pictures wirelessly it will take forever, since it first upload them to a Canon server. So you'll still have to use the cable.

I have only had this camera for a short period but I love it. I have always purchased the Canon PowerShots as they are so easy to use and carry. Recently I also purchased a Canon Rebel SLR, the smaller SLR. This camera is the smallest of the SLR camera and very easy to use but it is not a PowerShot.I just love the Canon SX280. They take great pictures and the zoom is great. I would recommend this camera to those who like to carry a small camera for quick pictures. This one is a little bigger than my previous Canon PowerShot SD950IS. Great camera

It's pains me to write this review as a long time canon user. After my previous canon started to go downhill I decided to step it up and get something that would really be a powerhouse for my mountain adventures. No brainer right? I'll just get another Canon!Huge mistake this time... I'm plagued by battery issues. Nothing worse than whipping out the camera to capture something with a full battery and have the camera tell me the battery is dead. Even better is getting 3 photos into a shoot with a full battery and having it shut off on me.Of course the battery isn't really dead but it's a huge hastle never knowing if your camera is going to work when you need it to. This purchase gets 1 star, although I'll be sure to update if my return goes through and the issue is fixed. I have the newest firmware installed for what it's worth!

I got this camera mainly to record videos with the awesome zoom it has. However this camera has a BUG that once you start recording the battery drains immediately and eventually shuts down. If you turn off and on, then battery level goes back to normal.There is a firmware for older versions that is supposed to fix this. My camera is a newer version and wont install the firmware.Today I tried to record a video and I had to use 2 fully charged batteries and with both of them I had the same result.I can only use this for pictures now.

I have been waiting to write this review until after our trip to New York. It performed flawlessly the entire trip. I turn the GPS on and off so that the shortened battery life is not an issue with me. It is done by just performing 3 easy steps. The Wifi could be a little easier to understand but it too seems that it is just learning curve and once I get used to it, it will be easier to operate. The one time that I have used it, it was very nice to wirelessly download my photo's to my Macbook Pro.The flash mechanism could be in a different location. It is typical to hold this type of camera with the left index finger on the exact location of the flash. While talking about the flash, there doesn't seem to be a selection of turning the flash on. There is only auto and off?? Maybe I need to play with it some more.It takes great photographs and the low light performance is awesome. The 3 reason I decided on this camera, after a LOT of research, was GPS, Wifi and the low light performance. All in all, all 3 are good features. The pictures I took of Times Square at night was fantastic.I had a Panasonic Lumix before purchasing this Canon. While it took some great photo's, it lacked the very features that I was looking for.Great decision on this camera.

This camera takes super still pictures. The image stabilization is very good and combined with the long zoom gives the camera a really good reach.BUT, like other reviewers have found, do not buy it if you want to take a lot of videos. Mine came with the latest firmware, yet after a short time when taking a video the battery low icon comes on and soon after that it shuts down. One star off for that.I am a bit surprised how much I like the Wi-Fi for downloading pictures to my computer. Easy to set up and works well. More of a plus than I expected.The GPS is OK - it works - I just haven't found it much more than a gimmick at the moment. Perhaps when I am taking pictures further from home...

I'm disappointed about the battery life issue. On Canon's website, they say if you have a serial number that has 3 or higher, you don't need the firmware upgrade that supposedly fixed the low battery life issue.I bought the camera on January 2014 from Amazon, log time after the issue were supposedly fixed, but I got a unit with a 1 on the 6th digit of the serial number, how is that Amazon is selling old units??I updated the firmware but the unit is STILL defective. Shame on Canon for selling such a lemon. As for Amazon, not sure because no doubt is losing money with all the returns that surely are requested (unless there is an agreement with Canon trying to dispose off the units still in stock)The battery problem occurs whenever using the zoom in video mode. Whenever I try and zoom, it shuts down and says "charge battery." You can turn it back on and you will have a full battery, but if you try and zoom with photo OR video, it immediately shuts down.

I am just a beginner with digital cameras and chose a Canon because I had used a Canon Rebel with Kodachrome for years and got wonderful pictures. Maybe, it's because I am a novice with the new Canon PowerShot, but I have difficulty getting the battery and memory card out of the camera when I want to see my results. I get some good pictures and some not so good. It will take a little more experience with the camera before I can rate it higher.

We’ve had this camera for 6 months and we love it. We haven’t had any of the battery issues mentioned by other reviewers. Indeed, we purchased extra batteries because of what other reviewers posted, but we haven’t needed to use them. Having three grandchildren, we have taken many movies with the camera along with many photos. Compared to the Canon Elph cameras we have had in the past, the picture quality is amazing with this camera. We have also been impressed with the photos taken in poorly lit rooms; overall, we are delighted with the camera and we have recommended it to our friends and relatives.

I have owned numerous Canon cameras. My last one was a 220 SX. I liked the pictures and videos I took. However, it started acting flaky on indoor shots when the flash should have popped up. I figured this was a good excuse to get the latest model. I ordered and received the SX280. I was not happy with the pictures. When I fully zoomed out, the picture was very grainy. Also, pictures taken from about 20 feet away from the subject were not sharp. Finally, I got my act together and called Amazon to complain. They sent me a return UPS label, and said they would send a new replacement, and that I should send them the camera I was not happy with back. This was last Saturday. Today, which is Monday, I received it from UPS! I cannot believe the fast and efficient service. I tested the new camera with 20X zoom and other shots. They are all fine. It was a defective camera. I am a very happy customer. I was worried that I wouldn't get the replacement camera in time for the holidays. Thank you Amazon. I will certainly tell all my friends about your service.

Camera is a true 5 Star. However, the soft ware is lacking. Customer service on the software was not helpful.The SX280HS is a super camera. I think it takes better photos than the 260. The zoom is impressive for a pocket camera. WiFi works as advertised. GPS can add to slide shows and of course is great for folks like Realtors, Engineers ...This camera reminds me of the advice "The Best Camera you own is the one you have with you".I have already written a review and recommendation for a friend to purchase the 280.

I'm very impressed with the sharp pictures taken with this camera in all mode.I tried the Av, Tv and Auto Mode and pictures were crisp under different lighting conditions.The zoom is very effective and comes handy in situation where my dSRL can't reach.It's a cheaper alternative than buying an expensive lense for my dSRL and gets the job done.I highly recommend this camera for novice photographers using the Auto Mode and for semi-advanced photographers using the Av and Tv mode.While the pictures does not compare to a consumer grade dSRL, for social network postings it does the job quite well.The wifi features come handy for iPad/iPhone users. I'm able to connect to the camera from my mobile device and instantly upload the pictures to social network or a dropbox.If you are planning to use video features, this camera is not for you. The battery won't last.
