I use only point & shoot cameras and mainly for travel. I have a wonderful Lumix camera with 24X zoom but at over 1.5 lbs that means a shoulder mounted carrying case --- not good for hiking or on crowded city streets. The SX260 is just what I wanted for travel --- light weight, belt loop mounted using case, wonderful images using Auto all the time. The camera gets very good reviews, even #1 in Consumer Reports for a super-zoom in its most current version --- the SX280 which adds only Wi-fi. I have a friend who is an optics expert and owns many cameras including DSLRs. When he checked out my SX260 he bought the SX280 and says it's the best small camera he has ever owned.

The SX260 is a lot of fun and (at low ISO settings) makes very sharp photos.Big surprise!This camera is a dramatic improvement over the older PowerShot A570 and A710.The 12X telephoto is very long for a point-and-shoot.But you have to use a tiny tripod or brace the camera for low-light, longshots.A real hoot is the movie mode ~ which has slow motion. The camera can shootin either 120 or 240 frames per second besides the standard 30 fps !The camera can be used completely manually. But, be on guard.The settings for Aperture and Shutter are on a separate setting from Focus... and this is a little clumsy.If you want to grab and shoot, it can be used in Program Mode.It can be adjusted to the user, and ready to go the next time its turned on.It has an Easy Mode for people who know absolutelynothing about cameras ... but simply want to take basic, good pictures.If you want to have more features and versatility than the latest smart-phone cameras,this Point & Shoot is a significant step up from them without getting intothe complex menus, weight and bulk of a large SLR." Its not the camera ... its the camera(wo)man ! "The SX260 is so light and small you're likely to bring it along !

My previous Canon camera made it simple with settings such as sunsets, people and pets, etc. This made it easier for novices like me without reading the volumes of instructions. However, on auto it does a good job without any hassle. I really like the zoom on this camera. I bought the camera just before my Mediterranean Cruise and was able to get some pretty good shots even without all the special settings.

Two major flaws are battery life and abrupt video shutdown. Even after firmware update the shutdowns occur. Less frequently but all too often. This replaced my Fuji fx30 that I would charge maybe 1x month. This eats 3 spare batteries every use. I wind up using my IPHONE and to tell the truth the photos are not all too different. I waited for the firmware upgrade and that pushed me past the return date now I am stuck and 300+ out. Poor choice,stay away.

I previously *thought* I wanted to be more knowledgeable about photography so about 4 years ago I got a digital SLR, started reading, failed many times over and over to get that special photo at kids events and finally quit. I started researching point and shoot's and this one stood out in the reviews. I can't tell you HOW EASY it is to use. I read the short instruction book and within 10 minutes I had a good grasp on the primary functions I needed. The image stabilization is incredible, I was literally walking and taking pictures while at Disney last weekend and no blur, it is amazing how it corrects itself. The low light pictures are also a breeze. Zooming is also a snap no lense changes, no f stop changes just press the button and focus then snap a pic. This is the camera you want if you want quality photos without the hassle of messing with settings.

Quality of build is evident in the Canon SX260 HS. Buttons and levers appear to be solid in both function and design; audible shutter activation is crisp and professional. The ability to set the F Stop, Shutter Speed and ISO manually, other than using the Auto setting is what makes this camera very special. The CMOS sensor adds to the total package, delivering crisp, professional photos. Images taken with the long zoom lens, despite it's 20X capabilities and being hand-held, were devoid of any distortion and held a high degree of resolution.Cons: Battery life appeared notably short, perhaps due to using the zoom and GPS feature often. This has yet to be confirmed. The location of the pop-up flash is where one would normally place an index finger over the top of the camera. A conscious effort must be made to not interfere with the flash mechanism when using this camera.

I have lost so many good concert videos because of this camera...The sound was so messed up whenever the music got loud. I had it replaced by Canon and still ended up with the same problem.....Other than that it was a good camera. But I mainly had it for concerts. So for me this is the WORST CAMERA EVER!!!!!!

I recently upgraded (by quite a bit, may I add) from an Olympus Tough 1030W to this camera. I have been AMAZED at the picture quality. I've had people look at my pictures and ask for the name of my camera so that they can get one themselves. With 20X zoom, you can get really close to your subject, and it doesn't appear pixelated in the least. I like the ability to zoom in while filming.One annoyance with this camera is that the flash pops out of the top of it. This was actually one of the features that attracted me to the camera. However, when I've asked strangers to take a photo of myself and friends, they always seem to have their finger over the flash when it pops up unexpectedly and startles them. I never have the flash setting on but I guess they must switch it on before taking the picture?All in all.. VERY happy with this camera. Much recommended!

The zoom is great. I have amazing pictures of birds from 30 yards away that my old camera never could have taken. I'm disappointed with the micro zoom. Trying to take a picture of a tiny flower is impossible. It seems like it should focus on it, but then the autofocus will most often focus on something behind the subject. I'm an amateur photographer, so maybe it can take a good close up if you know how to work all the options, but it's been frustrating for me. But as far as zooming on stuff far away and getting a clear image, this is great! PS, I lost the wall charger, and Canon wanted $50 for a new one. Buy from Big Mike's on Amazon, $15, and a bunch of extras.

I'm very happy with this camera. It takes beautiful pictures, is the right size, the batteries last forever, the screen is huge, and it has some nice options. I did though just set it to "portrait" mode permanently, even for a lot of scenery shots, it seems to make the pictures more brilliant than the auto mode. The only complaint would be the pop-up flash being in a position where you naturally put your left index finger, I've had the camera for months now and am still not used to it and occasionally my finger is over it. I'm afraid I'm going to break the mechanism one of these days, but so far it's been perfect.

I was looking for a good camera to take shots of people and our travels. A family member used to sell cameras and kept pointing me to Canons for their color quality. I'm an amateur photographer but use a camera daily to take family and nature shots. I am LOVING the color quality of the pictures I'm getting. It's true that the flash pops out where you might place your fingers but it's NO BIG DEAL as it's easy to get used to. It is also true that when light is ideal, you'll get better videos. I'm blown away by the zoom quality even in dim light. You get a bang for your buck with this camera and I'm SO glad I chose this particular one.

I bought a Nikon a few years ago and it recently broke (a lens error, which is apparently common). I decided to try Canon since it usually has a good track record and I couldn't find another Nikon in the price range I was willing to pay (without other lens error issues).I was skeptical because I've never really liked Canon's but I thought it'd give it a try. I loved the look and feel of this camera. The flash was nice and it felt very sturdy. Unfortunately, the screen wasn't very clear and it didn't take very good pictures in low light- something I loved about my Nikon. It also has no internal memory (which was my fault for not checking before I bought it).Overall, I felt I was going backwards from the broken camera I already had. I had it out of the box long enough to take the test pictures I needed and it went back in the box- returning it tomorrow. I guess I'll just save up for the more pricey Nikon.

Doesn't take very good pictures of activities/movement in low light, they seem yellow with flash and the flash doesn't always come on automatically making for dark photos. Daytime photos however are great...

I got this for my 14 year old daughter for Christmas because she was really showing an interest in photography and had been using my SLR a lot. I wanted to get her a nice digital camera that would be more portable than an SLR (telling her she can borrow mine, still). Well, she has barely put it down since Christmas! She has found so many features on it that she likes & she is taking some amazing pictures. She prefers pictures of nature & she gets some amazing close-ups and some really great zoomed in shots as well. I'm not going to try to give specifics about the camera details, but I have borrowed it to take video clips (as my SLR doesn't do a great job of that) and the videos have been great! I bought this based on reviews I read here on Amazon as well as elsewhere online. It was a great price & I would highly recommend this camera for anybody (not just a teenager).

Loved the Canon S90 for 2 years. Then that POS stopped focusing correctly. Lost out on an entire vacation's worth of quick, convenient photos. And Canon wouldn't fix it. Luckily, had my DSLR backup, which was a pain to lug around. But I digress... Replaced the S90 with the SX260 because I absolutely loved the spectacular shots the S90 produced, especially in low-light conditions. The SX260 has many of those same features, with great zoom and GPS. There are lots of great reviews with pluses and minuses. Here's my bottom line - this thing is compact, 20x zoom, every mode possible, a simple/auto mode, and is as easy or hard as you want it to be! I hope it doesn't go down the same road as the S90, S95, and S100. You can read many great reviews on the entire S-line, but as the cameras age, they start either failing internally, stop focusing accurately, or get the dreaded lens error. Check it out. So instead of jumping the Canon ship, I'm trying the SX260. And so far, it's meeting all my needs for a pocketable, capable, extended zoom camera. Pictures are still not as crisp as the S90 initially took, but the extra features and much lower price make up for it.

Great Camera. - Bought as a Christmas present for my parents.I have owned a number of point and shoot cameras over the years, and will only buy canon powershots, I've owned 5 small digital cameras over the last 12 years, and will now only buy powershots. - (I do own nikon DSLR though)Very nice camera. - easy to use (as they upgraded from an earlier powershot)My only criticism; the flash pops out of the top of the camera when needed. - pain in the rear - it's exactly where you hold the camera. they should have stuck with leaving it on the front, rather than adding un-needed complexity.Great zoom - 20X optical.

Like this camera a lot. Takes great pictures - color quality is excellent. I have used this camera for about two months now.The only disappointment is the flash location. Until I trained myself how to hold it to compensate, my finger would be in the way of the pop up flash. This sometimes caused the flash to not pop up properly requiring a shut down and restart. I now either turn the flash feature off, or try to remember to move my finger back from the top.Others have complained of short battery life and I found this to be true. However, once I turned the GPS off and the GPS tracking off the battery lasts much longer.I also have a Nikon D90 for serious photography, but wouldn't hesitate to use the Canon as well. I bought it for traveling where I would mostly be taking snapshots.I would recommend this camera if the two issues above can be tolerated. I'm glad I bought it.

I bought this camera for my wife to upgrade her from an older PowerShot. She has used it with almost an odd fervor since unwrapping it. Sandisk cannot make enough Class 10 SD cards to keep up with her voracious appetite for clicking. It takes great pictures for a camera in its price range. She especially loves the rapid fire feature and the HD video recording feature. This camera has been a real asset on our vacations and for chronically the first year of our youngest child's life. Highly recommended. Just be sure you buy a Class 10 card for it to unlock its full potential.

I have owned 2 other Canon cameras and based on their qualities I ordered this one. In most ways it is an improvement over my others. Would have rated it 5 stars but for the placement of the flash. I am still not used to holding the camera in a way that does not impede the pop-up flash. It is in exactly the spot one would naturally hold the camera for taking a photo. I have messed up several photos when I inadvertently held the flash down. Otherwise this is an excellent camera.

I love this camera for taking shots of things that are in the outdoors and even at night. My one major gripe with this camera through is that when the subject is moving the picture turns blurry no matter what setting I have tried. I'm a big music lover so the main reason I got this camera was to shoot video and pictures at the concerts I am seeing and half my photos end up being useless because the body and face are all blurred. Another issue is that when you press record there is a 3 second delay between when you press the button and when it starts which doesn't seem like a big deal in till your trying to catch something as it is happening and the beginning is cut off because of the delay. Long story short if you want a camera for situations where the subject is moving around a lot this wont be the cannon camera for you.

The zoom is amazing for a small, fit-in-your pocket/purse camera. It is sturdy with a metal body, not flimsy plastic. Photos are beautiful.Negatives: The placement of the pop-up flash. My finger is always blocking it from coming up. And even though the screen is very clear, I still miss not have a view finder.

It's hard to believe the the pictures this little camera can take. It has the ability to zoom in incredibly far without compromising image quality, and the 'Auto' settings are very easy to use. Image stabilization is near-perfect. I take all my pictures hand-held, and I never miss a shot. I've taken ~300 photos in the week that I've had it, and not a single one had to be deleted or re-done. Images can get a little grainy in low-light without a flash (on 'Auto'), but the night time scene works really well.If you're looking for a hand-held point and shoot that takes amazing pictures, look no further.

I've had all levels of camera - fixed lens point-and-shoot, waterproof, DSLR, iPhone. But for a recent trip to Spain, I wanted some zoom capabilities without having to bring a big camera bag.This camera/lens was PERFECT for that. Still small enough to have in my pocket, but with this crazy zoom lens that gives you 80x zoom. In fact, I'm not usually such a zoom photographer, but I found myself doing it more and more with this on the trip, and the results were great.

Purchased this camera and received it several days before leaving for Disney. Not much time to learn the ins and outs. It performed well and I was pleased with the shots I took with the exception of the fireworks. I'm sure I will do better next time. Zoom is super. Pictures of the electric parade were awesome. With the 12 mp, cropping is excellent to bring in an even closer view. Though the time between shots is faster than my six year old Olympus, it is still not fast enough to suit me. I'm sure that will come in future generations of cameras. I like the small cameras with powerful zoom and big mp. Not into carrying a big SLR around anymore so this camera fits the bill for right now.Am pleased with the camera. I take a lot of shots of my dog, flowers, scenery and grandkids. So far it has worked out very well.

I'll make this short since there's already many reviews:Problems: dust got under the lens in less than a month, and I'm not a heavy user. I'm sick of this problem with other camera makers, it's not just canon. A UV protective lens should be included with all such non-sealed cameras due to this very bad problem. Second: on manual mode, the dial ring, which is the only way you can adjust the F stop and exposure, triggers almost 100 percent of the time, the timer and flash, and the flash is another problem in that when it's triggered accidentally, often your finger is there so it can't fully extend, causing the camera to give a message to restart it to correct the problem, and you must restart unless you want to force the flash down, and who knows if that will cause damage.

This is a second hand or restored model. It is not new. The original box had stickers placed all over the serial and sku numbers on the box. The flap opening was covered with a generic round silver sticker to cover the tears on the box. The camera did not have a protective film on the rear screen (all new cameras come with it). Fingerprints everywhere on the camera. Missing original documents. Avoid buying anything from Phototech. I contacted Amazon and returned it immediately.

I've been a fan and owner of Canon cameras, including three EOS SLR's, for more than 10 years. This camera, the third Canon point-and-shoot I've owned, is very good for a shooting a variety of photos except in low-light situations. The pop-up flash is the main glaring fault with this camera. It is located right where your left forefinger rests while taking pictures. In certain shooting modes, if the light isn't adequate, the flash will pop up. BUT, numerous times it has done this when I was attempting to take a photo and my finger stopped the flash from coming all the way up. It jammed and the camera became useless. I had to turn it off, take out the battery, re-install the battery, then turn the camera on again before I could take another picture. I've missed countless shots because of this ridiculous flash problem. Also, it's a large camera and not as easy to carry in a pocket as the previous Canon P&S's I've owned. Now, the screen on the back loses power and goes dark after a few seconds. Not Canon's best in my opinion.

I've only had the SX260 for a short time but so far I'm very satisfied. I am an amateur photographer (vacations, grandkids) but I am also fussy about the quality of my photos. I've been taking many photos before our upcoming trip to Alaska. Even on Auto every image has been sharp with good colors. I have not found the flash to be a problem. I'm especially satisfied with the zoom. I have not had even one blurry photo with the zoom at 20X. I bought the store model at Best Buy since they were out of the SX260 and didn't plan to get any more in. I ended up paying $119 for the camera! The battery even fit into my old Canon charger so now I have two chargers. The CD that came with the camera messed up my iMac so I uninstalled it (with Canon tech help over the phone) and now my photos go automatically into my iPhoto program. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I hate this camera. Truly, truly hate it. I bought it to replace my last Canon Powershot. Pretty sure my last four cameras have been Canon Powershots....each an upgrade over the last and I've always been super happy with them. I don't even look at another brand. I picked this one, specifically because of the ridiculously long zoom and image stabilization. Outside, in bright sunlight, under optimal conditions, standing perfectly still? It take a passable picture, and the zoom is nice. Anywhere else, it's just awful. Low light pictures are horrible. Focus is awful. If your subject is moving at all, the picture is blurry. Forget about taking pictures of kids or animals, not going to happen. Takes forever to respond. I seriously haven't found anything that I like about it. I'm not a photographer. I take most of my pictures on the "Auto" or "Easy" setting. I've always been extremely happy with my Powershots...but not this one. I wish I would have returned it when I had the chance, but the first set of pictures I took with it (Jazz Fest in New Orleans) were predominantly taken outside in daylight, so I thought it was ok. After that, I thought maybe I just needed to "get used" to a new camera. Boy was I wrong.

I've been using a Nikon cool pix for 10 years or more as a convenient pocket sized camera to take with me anywhere when I feel the slr is too heavy. The picture quality was great. But this year I was playing with my friend's long zoom Panasonic and decided I needed to get something new. After much research I chose this one as the picture quality/price/size ratio seemed good. It really takes great pics. The colors are good and the zoom is amazing.

Bought this camera for an overseas trip and, with a few easy adjustments in a photo editing program to compensate for light issues, the photos were every bit as good as those taken by the other people in our group who had expensive cameras with big lenses and sunshades. Very easy to use and the controls and settings are pretty much self-explanatory. Only complaint is that the software that came with the camera was useless and out of date/incompatible with my computer. I simply downloaded a PDF of the instruction book and that made the CD even more useless, since the camera can be used with any photo program.

I'm no professional photographer, but as an artist I like to play around a little. I love my Canon DSLR (Rebel XS) but it's too heavy to lug around, and I never seem to have it with me when the perfect shot opportunity pops up. On the other end of the spectrum, phone camera quality continues to be subpar. This is the perfect go-between, as it's small enough to carry in my purse at all times but has great zoom and manual focus and aperture/film speed settings like my DSLR.Took it for a spin in the backyard today, and while it's (of course) not going to give me DSLR-quality photos, I got some amazing close-ups of individual flowers (and even flower petals) and some great quick-speed shots of my two dogs (down to being able to see the individual hairs in their fur!). So very pleased...not to mention the green color makes me happy. I always go with Canon, and I am never disappointed. (Did I mention this thing is FAST???)

Battery - Almost I had shot 200 photos to get the battery drain completely2. Picture quality is also good (Not the best) compared to my previous Sony DSC camera3.
