This isn't a review but it's the only way I know to post more information regarding this product. (I don't see the following info posted anywhere at Amazon and I looked pretty hard for it. And I have to check a star rating in order to post. I have no reason to doubt a WD drive, as none I've ever owned has ever failed. And I've owned a few different ones. So, four stars.)I've not yet purchased the WD10EALX, but very well might. Info is too often not displayed at Amazon and I was wondering about difference in interface (6Gbs/s vs. 3Gb/s), since Amazon claims this drive is a "newer version" of the WD10EALS. So I wrote Western Digital with a question, their reply to which is posted verbatim just below for any who wants more info: (Note in the reply, "SATA II," whereas Amazon claims, "SATA III." From where does Amazon get information one wonders? Maybe there is a SATA III generation, but if so I'm not aware of it.)"Dear Charles,Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. The model WD10EALX is a SATA-II device, whereas the model WD10EALS is a SATA-I device. There is no difference in the interface of the two disk drives other than the fact that one is faster than the other. Both of these drives are fully compatible with any SATA-II or SATA-I interface controllers."Now I know that I could buy the WD10EALX in place of the WD10EALS for which I was looking and which Amazon does sell through a couple of its sellers at outrageous prices (although, in general, beware of differences in cache sizes; i.e., 16MB vs. 32MB. Price differs quite a lot based on cache size). Amazon, other than wrongly claiming "SATA III" is otherwise correct in claiming the WD10EALX is a "newer version," but I couldn't be sure when Amazon can't or won't post all info; namely, that the drive here is fully backward compatible. My computer and probably most of those owned by buyers here, at 3Gbs/s, can't handle 6Gbs/s, but--as I know now--that's not a problem.Thanks to Western Digital for information.

To my knowledge, this drive works as advertised. I tried it as a replacement for my Moxi 3-Tuner DVR. It worked, but the Moxi continued to experience aggravating picture freezes. The Moxi has been known to have problems with some brands of hard drives, so I presume this drive would still be suitable for other eSATA devices.I recommend the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007JUFKM2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 (Seagate SV35 SATA III 2 TB) hard drive as a replacement for Moxi's internal hard drive. The Seagate SV35 unit has restored my Moxi to original operating condition, and quadrupled the original 512GB of storage space.

It's a bare drive, so it doesn't come with any cables or software. That's fine though, SATA cables are like a buck each, and the only software you'll probably need for data transfer can be found free from the fine people at EASUS (google it).It increased my Windows Experience Index (windows 8) from 4.7 with an old notebook drive to 5.9. I dont know if I can notice the computer going any faster, but I wanted the old notebook for something else, so I got this for my main drive. I'm not sure how much faster WD Black/Red/Velociraptor drives are, but the price of those I'd just get an SSD. This seems so far like a great bang for your buck drive... Just have to hope it's reliable I guess, the only reason I'd start disliking this thing would be if it broke.

Ordered as a second drive (back-up) for my computer which is set up for a home office. Arrived on time and well packaged. Working through Disk Management (Windows 7), I identified the drive, gave it a name, and formatted it. All told, a 5 minute set up and it has worked fine for the last month that I have been using it. I think it's a good drive and would recommend it to any one needing more storage for a home office set up.

This comes very bare bone. It would have been wonderful for amazon to let it be known that the hard drive does not come with mounting screws or a SATA cable. My valentines present will now be a week late. It would probably only cost western digital a single dollar to include screws and a SATA cable. Again, if you buy this please MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT NEED A SATA CABLE OR HARD DRIVE MOUNTING SCREWS. If you do need them, order them at the same time as an add on item and it will be much cheaper. I cannot review the quality of the drive yet as I do not have the proper stuffs to instal it.

Hard drives are like automobiles. Everyone has their favorite and all the others are lousy. Well, the only one I think is terrible is Maxtor, and they've been bought out by Seagate, who hopefully has put them on the straight and narrow. I'll never know because for the past ten years, since my Maxtor died after less than a year and my daughter's did the same thing, I've had Western Digital hard drives. Never had a problem until my 2007 3200KS died last month. Five years. That's not a terrible lifespan for a hard drive, is it?This one is faster, larger and quieter than my last one. I'm very happy with it and looking forward to many years of service.

Died after 1 week. It had 26 bad blocks and started to freeze every 3 min after the first problem. Amazon's tech support tried different ways to replace it and I got a Hitachi 500Gb but I had to pay ~10$ more, plus the delivery. However, they gave me an amazon credit for this. All in all, this is the 3rd WD I owned. The first one died after 3 years, got it replaced with a refurbished WD through the warranty program, and 2nd one lasted 2 years. I hope Hitachi will last longer. I have a 70 Gb Hitachi as a backup, which is 5 and 1/2 years old, tested with S.M.A.R.T and has no problems yet!. I hope the new one will last as much as this little one. Initially the S.M.A.R.T test showed thousands of bad blocks but after one day all tests returned 0. Anyway after 1 month, the HDD is working with no problems, and is very quiet! I recommend Hitachi, forget WD Caviar Blue 500 GB. for now.

I originally bought one of these as part of an upgrade for my gaming desktop. I didn't have a lot of money, so really large drives and solid state drives were out of the question. Western Digital has always been good for me, so I picked up one of these guys. I have had no problems what so ever with the first one. It's responsive, quiet and reliable. Can't ask for much more than that in a hard drive!I picked up the second one to install Linux. Again, no problems at all!

Needed a smaller Backup HDD to use internally. I always choose Seagate or Western Digital. It is being used as a second backup of all my media and documents so 500GB is more than sufficient for me. I chose this drive based on the combination of quality, reliability, previous experience with Western Digital Products and the value of the price,

I have always had good luck with Western Digital drives and this component was no exception. I was debating in my mind between this 32mb buffer drive (Blues) and the 64mb buffer (Blacks). The blacks have been criticized for being excessively noise while the blues are credited with being quieter. This drive is certainly quite enough for my purpose. I have three drives mounted in the case and adding this drive made no additional noise of which I am aware. The case ventilation fans contribute more to noise than all the drives together. Installation was just as easy as one would expect. Just install, add cables, reboot, and define partitions. Talking the word of others, I don't think there is much practical value to going from 32mb buffer to the 64mb buffer. However, I really have no way to make quantitative evaluation between the buffer options.Some purchases have companied that poor packing of these units resulted in shipping damage. My drive was very well packed and damaged free. These drives are OEM, so there is no instructions, screws, or cables, etc. but as a builder this is what I expected.

I have been had. This is the second time I get a defective WD drive. WD is definitely crap. This one was dead on arrival, but as I installed it after two months, I can't return it. The other one worked a few months after dying. They all have the same problem with the reading head. You hear weird noises and clicks, and nothing happens.

It's a Western Digital, which deserves 5 stars right there. I have used WD drives as long as I've used computers and they have always lasted a long time for me. An ancient 40 Gig HD I had lasted for a good 7-8 years before the dreaded clicking started.However, in this review I decided to give it 4 stars based mostly on speed and performance relative to what else is out there.Windows 7 rates this drive as a 5.9 out of 7.9 fresh out of the box, which is exactly where it should be. It's not an SSD, it doesn't have a huge cache, and 7200 RPM, while good, isn't extreme as some other models out there.

General Stuff:Have been using this drive for quite awhile now. It has been loaded with Windows XP, Linux Mint, Ubuntu as a triple boot OS drive. That all worked just fine. It has sense been formatted, and other combinations of OS's have been loaded many times.Right now it is being used as a Windows XP primary OS drive.Bade Stuff:The only issue with this drive is: it will develop a buzzz on boot-up, and once in a while it will do it while running. When I test it for errors, it comes up good, and does not show any heat issues. It appears to be OK!That is why I keep it backed-up consistently. Will never use it as a primary system OS drive or as a main storage drive. Don't really trust it.Good Stuff:It is a bit quicker than average in my testing, but nothing to brag about. It runs cooler than normal in load testing by a bit. However, if you run enough air through your case, everything runs cooler.Conclusion:The WD5000AAKX has worked well, it has been worked hard, it still has not developed any bad sectors, and I have been happy with my purchase from Amazon.

This is a simple 5-star drive. The Caviar Blue line is WD's general-use offering, and this drive fits that purpose. Reasonable performance, quiet, and moderate power consumption is exactly what I needed to fix a buddy's older computer. I needed this drive to replace the system drive for an old (304 years old) Gateway. The owner didn't want to spend a fortune on it and just needed a functional family computer for word processing and surfing the Internet. This WD Caviar Blue 500GB drive was the perfect upgrade from the older drive and is currently running WIN8 Pro with zero problems.If you are looking for a general purpose drive for a middle-of-the-road computer, this is the drive you are looking for.

I have been using Western Digital HDD's for a long time and have yet to have one fail.This one one used in a new system I built in a shuttle SFF computer. large enough for OS and programs, and fast enough that it is a good work horse for a desktop!as usual, best price I could find at the time!

This drive DOES NOT come with a SATA power cable! Be aware of that! So I forgot to purchase the cable with the drive, and I came back for it. But Amazon won't let me place the order because that's an "add-on" item...Seriously? I just want that cable! I don't want to buy it with another stuff "over $25"! Finally I found the cable that is not "add-on" for $1, but I have to wait for another 3-5 days, maybe much longer than that in this holiday season. Of course I don't want to pay over $15 shipping for a $1 cable.Since I have no power cable, I have not had a chance to use this drive yet. But I won't rate it higher than 3 stars because of this bad shopping experience.

I wanted to get a Hitachi, but this came in at the right price. I set it up as a function back up drive (installed OS - in case of failure of the hard drive in my system - I can just pop this in and get back running with minimal down time ), as well as a back up with a few partitions.I plugged it in, and I had no trouble partitioning and loading the OS. Let it run and checked to make sure windows installed well enough, then yanked it - putting it in an external drive case - and put the old drive back in place.That is it so far. It will just be used externally to back up files on one of the partitions, and is ready for emergencies.

I bought a cheap SATA III adapter and run my DVD/CD burner and the WD drive through it.Seems to be faster. Also I wanted more space so I could dedicate 50 Gb to system partitions for Vista and Windows Server. I like to multi boot and run trial versions of Microsoft OSes on the second partition.

I was looking for a new HDD for my computer and this was a good choice. I have had to replace many Drives in the past and I have always replaced them with Western Digital Drive. Come to think of it I have never had to replace a Western Digital Drive yet.Very fast shipping.

I purchased this drive to replace a failing unit in a desktop PC after researching drive manufacturers' reliability, then understanding the WD product line. The 'blue' drive seemed to provide what I needed. Installation was easy, the drive is quiet, and it does not produce excessive heat. The unit was well-packed for shipping. It has been in operation no for about a month with no issues at all.[02/12/13 update] - so far, so good. Drive is installed in an HP "slimline" unit which does not provide quite as much airflow as might be best, but the drive is not complaining at all.

This drive was easy to install and is working perfectly so far. My computer boots in seconds. Eventually, I will add an SSD drive for my OS and my Games and this will become a data drive, but for now I am very happy with it.

Has been running 24/7 since summer 2012 without problems.My only issue with this is that the auto-spindown feature is not a good default setting. It adds wear to the drive, and spin-up consumes a lot of power so WD assumes that this drive will seldom be used for write/read operations. I am using a 3rd party hard drive wake tool to keep the drive from sleeping.

It was pretty cheap, came quickly- like 2 days or so. There were no directions or anything so I had to just hope I remembered from when i took my other one out 3 days previous. (since I know little about computers). But once it was in, it initialized and booted right up. The computer has been running great ever since

We have a computer that doesn't get used that much and when it is used it's only for the internet or email. So price is a big reason to get this smaller size HD. I've used Western Digital many times in may computers so I know the reliability would be there. Works great for what we're using it for!

Drive was a replace ment fer an 7 yr old WD, Little disapointed when i recived it. in a staic bag and 2 plastic holders. but if you use the warrenty with WD there are tons of things u have to do to protect it to ship it to them. (its protected better when you have to return it for warrenty clame. why not when its shipped to you?)

I've had this HDD in my machine for a few days now and so far, I've been very impressed. I purchased this drive mainly for storage and running some applications supplementary to my Corsair 60 GB Force Series 3 SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive - CSSD-F60GB3A-BK, which I use as a boot drive and to run a few other applications. Overall, I've been very happy with it. My system detected the new drive right away. Even for a Caviar Blue, which is intended to be their mid-level drive, I have been happy with the read/write speeds and stability. The SATA III, 6bg/s is a noticeable change from my previous storage drives. I've also been pleased with how quiet it is. I had to put my ear right up against the case to hear it in operation. Slower than my SATA I drive it was replacing. Took about 5 hours to install Windows 7 and any major thing the requires the hard drive freezes up the system. Super loud too.

I am using this hard drive in a raid system. I love it so far even though I haven't had a chance to even take advantage of this hard drive yet.; Once I do I probably end up filling it up with video. I recommend this hard drive to anyone.

Mine is just a useless paper weight now. I paid $79 for mine, too, before the price dropped. Sadly, it stayed in the box while I gradually bought the other parts for my new system. That means it was too late to return it by the time I realized the drive is garbage. It was dead within a month of opening the packaging and installing it. Let that be a warning: verify your purchases aren't junk before time runs out on your returns.

I used this drive in a recent build for my grandmother's PC. She doesn't need a lot of space or speed, so I found this to be an excellent choice. Thankfully, my expectations have been met and I have no encountered any issues with this HDD.I highly recommend this product for low capacity builds.

Bought this to replace and old drive I had that failed. So far it's been flawless and I have had it for a year. Use the drive every day for my work. The speed is good. I really can't complain for the price. Was the best option from what I could tell from my research.

I recently replaced a failed Seagate hard drive with this hard drive. Most hard drives can be heard when engaged. The Western Digital Caviar Blue is whisper quiet. As it was in use today, I had to look at the drive light to see if it was running. This was a great purchase and Western Digital is known for their great products. Highly recommended.

Standard size drive. Seems to work just fine though it is pretty hot when taken out of a King Win hot swap tray. I'm switching to Seagate Barracuda drives which are not as tall and seem to run a little bit cooler.

Now this is a pretty neat Hard Drive, at least for my usage. It's decent and fast, and with 1 TB of storage you'll hardly run out of space :D (unless you store Massive data, then it might not be enough) but 1 TB is enough for me. Western Digital seems to be widely popular among Hard drives so Glad I stuck with it.

came with no install hardware(cd) and the WD web site software dose not recognize it so not so good at all, from what I have read they must have been rejects or something can't believe amazon sells. my newr system running windows8 won't install it right?

One thing that Amazon needs to do is suggest a power adapter cable to go along with it. My upgrade was delayed almost a week while waiting for the adapter. At the very least the need for the adapter cable should be disclosed. Even with this minor glitch it was still a terrific buy. Thanks Amazon!

its better then my normal sata 1 seagate from 6 years ago but not by a whole lot the sata 3 does speed it up a lil bit but keep in mind it dosent take much to over load this like any mechanicle drive and will def be a bottleneck in a next gen system but it does its job as well as it can and i am happy with it

I have been pleased with the quality of Western Digital devices in my decades of work in computer department management and that made my personal choice an easy one. This HD device has only been in use for a few months to date but I have confidence it will provide a long period of service.

I got it have my windows on it as I have two 3TB SATA 7200 RPM Desktop Hard Drive an one 1TB Desktop Hard Drive an a 2.5 500 GB laptop HD all for extra storage space

Needed a relatively cheap, small, fast internal SATA hard drive for a cheap computer to reload Windows 7 on to in order to get a friends computer up and running after a "vicious" viral infection. Got it quick using PRIME. Worked perfect. Used the old corrupted hard drive as extra storage after reformatting it. Needed to use the SATA header being occupied by the optical drive for this HD ... which required the use of an EIDE adapter on the SATA optical drive ... see my review on that item ... It also worked perfect!

Seriously - this was an exact match for capacity and speed for my crashed drive so the old one was out and the new one in in under a minute. Formatting and installing windows was quick and easy. Of course installing all of the software took forever, but that is not a fault of the hardware.
