this HDD does everything i want. and ontop of that it is quiet. no problem thus far with anything. sends data/files anywhere and starts up programs in the blink of an eye. only recommendable

The Western Caviar hard drive is nice. Easy to install. It integrated into the computer I upgraded very easy and was easy to install the operating system (windows 7 pro) on. Very satisfied owner.

grat price for memory and 500gb is more then enough for what i need - iremeber the days when a 500gb sold for 399.00 and now it sell for 39.99 make you wonder how much an ipad is gonna cost in 5 years............

I like this WD drive because it has been reliable, runs cooler than other drives, and is a very good value for the price. I've built 2 external USB drives using this model inside a Vantec enclosure, also a solid product. Great for keeping important data backed up and safe.

My WD 1TB Caviar Blue internal HDD was priced right & arrived on time from Amazon, packaged nicely and undamaged, installed in minutes, formatted & partitioned it and put it to work. That was about a month ago and I already have it almost halfway filled. It's doing exactly what it should be doing so far. Not much more than that I can say.

Used it as the OS hard drive for a budget pc. Unless you're an intense gamer, which you won't be with a budget pc, this hard drive is absolutely fine. The difference between this and the black versions are not noticeable when doing normal tasks. Just wanted to give my 2 cents.

Excellent HD for an upgrade, went from an old IDE WD 40GB to this 750 Gb in one morning, easy to setup if you know what you are doing, my PC now runs 5 times faster thanks to the extra space and drive speed. Thinking on buying another for that huge music library.

I love WD drives, but I am not pleased with this one. Unfortunately I could not believe how LOUD this drive is! Too noisy. This hard drive is the only part of my system that makes any noticeable amount of noise.My Western WD1002FAEX Digital WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA 6 GB/S 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache Internal Desktop Hard Drive is extremely quiet, far more better than this one.

I PURCHASED THIS HARD DRIVE TO USE FOR BACKING UP MY COMPUTER FILES. I DID NOT NEED THE FASTESTHARD DRIVE AS I BACKUP MY COMPUTER AT NIGHT.TIME WILL TELL HOW DURABLE THIS DRIVE IS, BUT IT CAN'T BE MUCH WORSE THAN THE SEAGATE HD I HAD, WHICH FAILED AFTER APPROX. A YEAR AND A HALF.

This drive would be a nightmare for the inexperienced, hence 4 stars. No instructions or software included! Had to download drivers and install a floppy boot drive to complete installation. Otherwise, the drive is quiet and fast.

I Just built a new system and this is my boot drive. It is very fast and quiet. I did use a very high end Asus mother board which does recognize the 6 gbps performance of this drive and 12 gig of corsair 1600 ram. But still the Windows 7 boot times are crazy fast.I have noticed that some reviews said that "green" versions of these drives were loud. This is the "black" version and you can't hear it running, very quiet. It is a bare drive so you don't get nay cables or hardware but did come very well packaged in an anti-static bag. Make sure you use SATA cables marked 6 gbps there is a difference from the standard 3 gbps cables. (amazon does carry these for about $3 dollars)New technology is always expensive but this is a great drive so far.

I have always had very good performance and reliability out of Western Digital hard drives. I have not installed this drive yet but plan to in the near future. The drive I received is used but arrived in excellent like new physical condition.

This drive has only 16 MB of cache not the 32 that the product description says. WD does not make a 500 GB Sata 6.0 drive with 32 MB cache. This is the Blue drive. The Black drive has 64 MB of cache.

Home PC Dell 8250 XPS with Win XP with SP1, 1.5GB RAM. Easy installation into mini desktop PC. Installed Win XP software using long format (NTSF) without incident. However, after all software was uploaded, windows did not open. Could not resolve issue at that time so I reinstalled a WD 250GB HD with 8mb cache that works. At this time I do not know if this was caused by a HD size limitation or a cache limitation (8mb vs 16mb, or even a faulty HD.

Purchased this item with another item and selected super saver shipping. The other item I ordered was shipped the same day even though I selected super saver shipping. This item however was shipped 5 days later which was somewhat of a disappointment.This hard drive is exceptionally fast and quiet. The only thing I could possibly complain about is that it didn't come with the mounting screws. Since it was OEM, I didn't expect it to come with software and that was just fine with me.Another reviewer says that this doesn't support dual boot which is incorrect, I put my XP system on this drive and installed Ubuntu Linux on my old drive and it performs admirably.

This IDE HD is a MONSTER!!! i run DualBoot Xp/Vista....i had no problem installin either of the two OS's with original disks....i split the HD 186gb XP/279gb Vista (usable space after format)!!!! It boots up just fine either or system...XP is under a snap of a finger n programs r loaded, scored a 5.8 in Vista!!!! My old 150gb HD only scored a 4.5 in Vista and this one is much more noticibly Faster!!!! It is also about 15-20F cooler on temps..my average case temp doesn't hit above 103F/40c now....before i would see about 119F average with gamin high at 165F, nuttin over 140F gaming wit new set of these HD's from WesternDigital!!! They are quieter then the last set of Hard Drives i had which were Seagate Baracudas 150-IDE/250-SATA!! Drive arrived at the bottom of a large box, with a few 'air' packets on top of it. Absolutely nothing to stop the drive bouncing around the large box during its journey.

For some reason the "Caviar Blue" series of WD drives will not work with the Alesis HD24 HD recorder (you will get a HD reset error when attempting to mount the drive). I believe this is the only flavor of Western Digital drive that doesn't work in the HD24--the other "Caviar" series drives work great, just not "Caviar Blue." FYI.

I use it solely for storing TV shows recorded from DishNetwork. I used to have a 160GB hard disk for this purpose. But with my wife and I both recording TV shows to that hard disk, I find that we will run out of disk space in one week if we don't keep up watching and deleting the recorded shows -- this is despite the fact that we are only recording in DVD or lower quality (not recording HDTV to my PC yet). With this 500GB hard disk, I don't need to worry about this any more, and I can take my time watching the recorded shows instead of forcing myself to watch the shows just to delete them to make room.When the time comes and I need to start recording HDTV into my PC, I am sure I will get a 1-TB hard disk. Hopefully, by then 1-TB hard disk will price the same as a 500GB hard disk now.

This bare bones drive has software available at the Western Digital site, which will partition and format the drive and copy the old drive. However, it does not support dual boot. You can partition the drive and copy the data to both OS drives, but the second OS will not boot. Also, Windows prior to Vista is normally limited to 137 GB. Service packs correct this for Windows XP and 2000, but you cannot use the original disks (pre-SP) to install the OS on this drive unless you want to lose access to 363 GB.

I returned the HDD because I bought it to use in my ReplayTV DVR but it wouldn't work because of the 16MB cache.I'm sure it would have worked fine in a PC.

Nice replacement/upgrade HD for older EIDE systems. Be aware "Bulk packaging", there are no instructions, cables or screws included. You must know how to add a hard drive and get Windows to "see" it. Otherwise buy the "retail" version that comes with the instructions and installtion kit and is cheaper. Western Digital WD5000JB-Retail 500GB EIDE Caviar SE Hard Drive for Desktop PC I see no reason to get this HD when the other is cheaper and the same HD.

I was compelled to give a review based on the 3 bad ones here already.I've had this drive for about a year so far and have had absolutely no problems with it. It runs cool, fast and there's been no problems whatsoever. Most people I talk to trust Western Digital and it's an oft recommended company. I'm buying another soon to place into an external enclosure.

Installation was a breeze. It's quiet and fast. Very satisfied with it. I used to be a big Seagate fan, but have been disappointed with my last couple of Seagates. I now put Western Digital as my personal favorite.

Just installed this drive a few days ago in my machine. Incredible drive for less than $80.00. I noticed a difference in speed right away thanks to the 16mb cache. The drive is extremely quiet. The only problem I had was getting XP to recognize it as a 500 GB drive. It kept wanting to see it as 132 GB. This was easily solved with the Easeus partition program (a free download and an incredible program in it's own right!). Once that was taken care of, everything else just fell into place. Definitely go for the SE16. The shipping was fast and communication was great. Thanks Cyberguys!!!

I initially bought one of these for a quiet PC. Because it was quiet and I never had problems with my WD 80GB Caviar I bought another. Big mistake. The first one died after a few months. The second one died a month later. The worst part is I trusted the drive and used it to back up a lot of my personal music files. I lost all those.I'm surprised because my WD 80GB Caviar was reliable. Seems they're not focused on quality anymore. After this experience I won't be buying WD anymore. I will be buying Seagate or Samsung now. The Samsung's are quiet and reliable. The Seagate I just bought to replace the WD drives that died is working great so far, a 750GB server quality drive, a bit noisy but fast.
