Blue Scorpio drives might serve ok as back-up or external drives, but don't use them for intensive day to day use. Specifically, don't install one as your boot drive. I tried replacing my stock Hitachi 320 which has the same spin rate and same cache size, but the Blue Scorpio was really laggy causing very noticeable and annoying pauses every few seconds as the OS had to wait for it to access. I replaced it with a Seagate Momentus -- a little less roomy, but much faster and easier on the wallet, too.

Actually, I bought this drive a few months ago and it's still a very worthwhile upgrade today. I run YDL 6.1 Linux as well on my PS3 on a 10GB partition and the balance (remember, you lose on average of 7% of usable space due to formatting) goes to the console for all the PSN downloads (DLC, wallpapers, and themes in addition to whatever ever music and photo files you may wish to store on it as well)... and still have room for much, much more!The PS3's latest 2.60 firmware has a slick photo gallery application that could chew up disk space, obviously depending on the amount of photos you have. I store quite a bit of digital media on USB external HDDs in addition to a network attached server however with this drive, you're pretty much assured that it stays "future-proof" for as long as possible... until the PS4 arrives.Finally, it doesn't make much more sense to pay the extra $100 for the available 160GB PS3 when you could grab this drive and double that capacity for less and not void any warranties. Again, a very worthwhile and simple upgrade if you're thinking of doing this to your PS3. You really won't benefit very much with a 7,200 RPM with the PS3 either, so save your cash especially since this drive is whisper quiet as compared to a 7,200 drive. Also, you don't need the retail package version that you would find in let's say a Best Buy because if you're intending to use this with a PS3, all you need is the drive itself so the retail package with cables, instructions, etc. is not needed at all so you may as well pocket the savings and sell your old drive on eBay or craigslist.

So far so good is all i can say. The extra 500 gb well a little less is pretty quiet, i do not notice any lag with data accessing really and was a breeze to install into my macbook.

I was looking for a hard drive to replace the 160gb one in my laptop that died from the heat.The Western Digital Scorpio Blue met my requirements:1) Price - the 320gb was within a few bucks of the 160gb. No brainer to get the bigger one.2) SATA II/3.0gb - even though my older drive was only SATA I, the Scorpio is backwards compatible.3) Less heat - the lower power consumption of the newer hard drives like this one means less heat which killed the old one.4) Warranty - Western Digital (WD) has an easy RMA process. If this hard drive craps out in the next 3 years I can get another one from WD no problem.The Scorpio Blue installed without a hitch has been running happily in my laptop since I got it. When the hard drive died in my sister's laptop a few weeks later I knew what to buy again !!

As you can see from the title, this hard drive totally beats the crap out of my stock OEM hard drive in my laptop! Coincidentally, the hard drive that got installed in my laptop was also a Western Digital Scorpio, but it was of really bad quality. I got this hard drive because my old hard drive got some bad sectors on it after a while, it was just too loud, and I wanted more capacity. I remember that with my old hard drive in my laptop, I could totally hear it turn on any time I turn my laptop on or wake it from hibernation or sleep. With this one, it's really quiet when I do any of those things! Installation of this hard drive was really simple! It was my first time replacing a hard drive in a laptop, and I did it easily! This is a great hard drive for the money! It's nice and quiet, and it has a great 400 GB capacity! I totally recommend this hard drive if you're replacing your current one, or just want a new one! Great job, Western Digital!

I bought the new MacBook Aluminum (13" - Late 2008), with the 160GB hard drive, which quickly fell short to my storage demands. While on the market for an upgrade hard drive, I came across the WD 500GB Scorpio Blue and hesitant at first (I could not find anywhere a post which would guarantee that it would work with my MB), I decided to go for it. Upon receiving my hard drive, I ran the Time Machine on my MB, switched the OEM hard drive for this beauty (it took about 15 mins.), installed Leopard from the DVD that came with my MB, and then restored from the most recent TM backup (installing the OS took about 10 mins, and restoring the backup took about 2 hrs - it was a 140GB backup!). So far, I've had no problems whatsoever using the drive. It is very quiet, does not heat up excesively (comparable actually to the original hard drive), and now I have a MB with a 500GB drive!!!I am extremely satisfied with this drive, and would definitely recomend it to any MB/MBPro owner who wants to upgrade the hard drive.------------Update: July 19th, 2010I've been using this hard drive for over a year and a half now, without any problems whatsoever. Quite drive, no difference in power consumption, performs great! Actually, I am thinking about replacing it with the new 1TB Scorpio, especially because my digital movie collection is growing really fast (I'm ripping my own DVD's so I can view them in my LCD TV, my iPhone, my iPod or my MBP). Great drives, and to be honest, I've never heard of any freezing, beach balls, or any other problems before or after I bought my drive. Great product...still give it 5 stars!

I purchased this HDD as a replacement to my 120GB original which was installed in my Dell Vostro 1500, which was a Fujitsu. Great price @ $55.00; however I just saw it cheaper for $5 less. Amazon is just great!

I bought this to replace my 40 GIG hard drive in my PS3. With all the games on the PS3 we began getting the message that we were running low on space. My son is the one who suggested this HD. To think I was actually considering buying a new PS3 for more space. Very well priced and easy to install! It fits very well into the HD bay on the PS3. Highly recommended for those that are going to upgrade their PS3.

Overall a low price hard drive for my sony laptop. Has a slight ticking noise to it when it reads/writes data. The black version is a higher end version which I will probably get next time.

i dropped my mac, needed a new hard drive but couldn't afford a genius or tekserve to do it for me, but found a great deal on this hard drive on amazon and replaced it myself using youtube videos. if you like DIY and you have a lot of patience, i recommend it! it's been a couple months and i've been happy with this hard drive.

This WD drive was exactly what I needed for my wife's MacBook. I had no problems with the installation, formatting, and re-loading of the data from TimeMachine. And, the price was great. Couldn't have asked for an easier upgrade after her original hard drive crashed (which, btw, was a Fujitsu).The only surprise is that this was a bulk drive. After I received the drive, I noticed the word "bulk" in the title of the item. So, it should not have been a surprise there was no packaging or documentation. But, since I knew what I was doing, this would have all been thrown away anyway.

I bought this to replace the 250gig drive in the unibody aluminum MacBook 13". The install was quite easy. However this drive behaves a little differently than the stock MacBook drive. The Scorpio is always spinning and that gives out an audible hum. The stock drive is completely silent when not in use making the MacBook dead quiet. I can also hear an annoying read noise every few seconds. I can't quite describe the noise, it's the sound you hear when the drive is accessing data. But when idling, it seems like the head makes the slightest move every 10-15 seconds making that read sound.The drive is much faster however, that is apparent even during boot up. It also seems to run a little cooler than the stock drive, after hours of use the hand pad over the drive doesn't bare any effect of the drive working.I'm going to do some research if the noise is standard or just my drive. I might swap the drives again and keep the 500g Scorpio in a USB2.0 case.

This seems to be a great little (size) big (capacity) hard drive. Of course by the time anyone reads this review 320 Gb will probably be miniscule, but at the time of writing it is a formidable hard drive. I installed this in my Macbook Pro in about an hour, using online instructions (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro/Hard-Drive/85/5). Another helpful article can be found at: http://www.macworld.com/article/58066/2007/05/macbookprohdupgrade.html.The only downside is that my battery life is considerably shorter. That is contrary to other reports I've read on the internet, so I suppose everyone's experience is different.You will also need a small Philips screwdriver and a #6 Torx. If you want to keep the data on your existing HDD and transfer it, you will also need an enclosure (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZHEGB2/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title) is what I used, also reviewed on Amazon.NOTE: Everything I've read on the web states that this install will void any remaining warranty on your system which is definitely something to consider if you've shelled out serious clams for Apple Care.

I bought this Hard Drive to upgrade my Macbook Pro 15"(mid 2009).The installation process is very simple. You don't need to be an expert.It has the double of space available of the original drive ( fujitsu 250gb ).But it requires more energy to run. Almost 50% more (1.65W of Fujitsu X 2.5W of WD)Result: 2 hours less of battery autonomy.It's not a big issue, if you consider that the drive is faster than Fujitsu.But, if you need 7 hours of battery, consider to buy the Fujitsu 500Gb drive.FUJITSU Mobile MJA2500BH - Hard drive - 500 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB

I had an 80 GB drive and replace it with this 250 GB drive. Works great no problems. Easy to install and apple's install program made it much easier to format the drive than any windows application. Watch out windows....

Excellent hard drive. The only thing that troubled me was getting the mini torx screw driver required to take off the metal thing which the existing hard drive is in, and then screw in the new hard drive. I installed the new hard drive into my MacBook, and the rubber inserts came off so I pulled my Mac apart and carefully pushed the rubber and the hard drive in place. This has nothing to do with the Scorpio hard drive, but may help someone with installation. For some reason I never came across anyone on the net talking about unscrewing the torx screws on the metal thing. The rubber inserts coming off is common though.

I was given a black macbook without a hard drive. After reading about all my choices, I took a chance on the Western Digital. It's the same drive they charge $15 more for at Best Buy, and there's no tax or shipping charges. Yes it's not boxed the same, but it performs the same. I can't hear any noise, and I haven't had any issues with the drop sensor conflicting with the drive. With OS 10.4.11, my Macbook boots in less than 25 seconds. And it arrived Fast! I ordered it on Friday, and it was at my house on Monday, with normal delivery.Thanks.

I have used various Western Digital Scorpio Blue drives, and I have not had any issues with them. This Drive comes bare-bones, but you can easily get the partitioning software from Western Digitals site. The drive seems to work just fine. I am quite happy with this purchase.

I bought this to replace my 60GB drive in my PS3. It installed easily as any drive would be in the PS3. This 500GB was a nice upgrade as my 60GB HDD was pretty much full. Now I've got ample room for movies, music, and other content. This drive works great with the PS3 and I would recommend it for PS3 users.

I picked this up to upgrade a friend's Macbook and it went off without a hitch. It was a simple procedure: get an external enclosure, plug the new 320gb drive in to it, dupe the drive via SuperDuper, and then replace the drive. The drive is super easy to replace (there are countless tutorials on Youtube). The only hard part is finding the weird hex drive screwdriver that you need to remove from the internal drive you're replacing.Other than that - you can swap drives in about 90 minutes with the full confidence that this drive will offer more space and be faster. I'm happy with it on mine and my friend is happy that she now has a lot more space to store mp3s and movies.

I bought this item for my PS3 40gb when i purchased it back in 2008 and it was a great investment. It was a great value for the price I paid for the item. It was a breeze to upgrade the HDD, easy swap and format for the PS3. (It it noted that this was for the original (phat PS3)). I have recently upgraded to the PS3 Slim which contains a 120gb HDD. They release a 250GB recently, but I would advise to just upgrade the HDD yourself, it is cheaper and not that hard to upgrade.

...for the money. Perfect replacement for the stock 120 Gb drive in my PS3 Slim. Popped it in and away we went! Quite and quick....working flawlessly for a while now....would recommend to anyone looking for expanded storage within their Slim (who wouldn't?). You have to format the wd 320 hhd. remember to buy the attatchment so you can turn the new hhd to fat32 and clone the old hhd on to the new one. its a good hhd, just remember to do all the steps. too confusing for starters. good luck.

I had an HP HDX18T that I purchased in March 2009 w/a Hitachi 320 GB 5400 RPM drive. It started making noise shortly into its life, probably due (in part) to Vista's incessant need to spin it (LSASS and CSRSS EXE's being the main culprits). As an MSDN subscriber I have early access to Microsoft releases, so I downloaded and threw Windows 7 Ultimate on a bare metal Scorpio Blue 500 GB drive. Under Vista it would take 10 minutes to fully boot- 5 minutes (minimum) before the logon screen would show. Well, be it the drive, Winblows 7 Ultimate, or the absence of HP bloatware, I now boot fully in UNDER A MINUTE!! In addition, this drive is SILENT!! For $100 you simply can't go wrong. Not hot at all. VERY happy with this puppy.

This hard drive was a great purchase...heard lots of bad feed back about bad packaging..i have to disagree...only thing i have to say is that mine wasn't really a 320 gig hard drive...more like a 297...what happened to the other 22gigs??..ha.ha...i heard they round it up...but 20 gigs is 20 gigs man...ha.ha....its cool though..my macbook works great and its really silent....would most definitely recommend this to anyone lookin to upgrade their macbooks...

Like everyone else stated this is THE PS3 replacement hard drive. Whether you got the 60, 80 or 120 GB drive to start out with, you will quickly see (even if you are not a hard core gamer) that it will begin filling up. When you take into account all of the data you can store on your PS3 like pictures, music, etc. you also need to keep in mind that most games these days require a multi GB execution file be loaded onto your hard drive when you play them for the first time. Because of this, I noticed how my drive began filling up quickly (I have about 6 games and about 10 GB's of music and pictures) and before I noticed it I had 34 GB of space used. This drive and the installation process overall is extremely easy (less than 10 minutes excluding backup time) just please be careful and use a good small phillips screwdriver because the blue screw inside the PS3 that releases the drive casing as well as the 4 smaller screws that hold the drive in the casing are VERY EASY TO STRIP. It has proved to be extremely reliable and the PS3 fomatted it automatically when I booted up after installation. This should provide the casual to average gamer with plenty of room for quite a while. I would also recommend (as other reviews thankfully did) purchasing an external case for the old drive so you have a small but functional backup drive especially since this stuff should not end up in the trash. Reduce, re-use re-cycle as Jack Johnson says. PEACE

I bought this to upgrade my 160GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro. I've never installed a hard drive before but am decent with computers. I followed instructions online and it was very simple.The hard drive is silent. Runs a tad faster it seems. So far no complaints about it. Love the extra hard drive space.

I recently purchased and installed this on my launch PS3. I don't notice any difference in speeds between this hard drive and my old one, but I can swear it's a little quieter. Installation on a PS3 is really simple except for the screws which are super soft and can be stripped easily. I'm really happy I got it and now have a ton of room on my PS3!
