Avoid this product if you are running Vista. When My Book is attached to my computer it adds about 2 minutes to Vista's boot time. Others have reported the same problem. Western Digital's has yet to acknowledge the problem. The product does not seem to have a negative impact on XP's performance.

Time of writing: Agu.2007which one is worse, Vista or MyBook?Plain and simple: do NOT use 1394 is you want Vista! Or do NOT use Vista if you want fancy hardware!I'll return it!!!

don't waste your money, it runs very hot to the touch and was very noisy. WD sent me a replace and that one would not work. I have a maxtor that is 5 years old and still runs great.

I lost EVERYTHING! I was initally very impressed with this unit, but unfortunatly after 4 months, the unit failed, the data is unrecoverable, iI lost every document, video, and music file i had on it..... WD unhelpful, although they will replace with another unit, can I trust it??

My first WD My Book drive delivered from Amazon.com actually never worked but shut down after a few seconds on several computers. After spending nearly 30mins waiting for an only remotely helpful WD helpline rep, I was eventually directed to WD's support website which had a new drive shipped to me in less than 48hrs soothing my initial anger.The new drive works just fine. The software is very easy to use (no installation), but provides only limited functionality. If you consider using this drive for more complex backups (rather than just storing data outside of your PC's hard drive), you should definitely consider upgrading the software.

steps1- Unboxed it.2- Plugged the power cord3- Plugged the usb cable to the computer4- BAM!!! Additional 250GbI didn't install any software. Windows XP automatically recognizes this as an additional logical drive.The only bad thing is that it comes formatted as FAT from factory. But nothing a good reformat won't solve.Transfer rate is excellent. I actually plugged this to my server and shared it on windows so I could access it on my home network.Now I can easily backup files from my laptop to this device (that's actually connected to the server)For those giving bad reviews because it crashed... Keep it in mind that it's a hard drive... Hard drives do crash... That's just something they do. You should always keep 2 backups. Actually, I'm now researching online backup services (like Genie Backup).What good are 10 backups in my house if there's a fire (knock on wood) and it destroys my computer and all the backups I had.Really great product for the price.

It is really amazing how fragile external drives continue to be. I read a lot of scary stories in customer reviews and figured it was just statistics -- tons of drives sold, a few scary stories, not to worry. And I have friends who have had some success with these devices. But my Western Digital My Book Premium Edition refuses to start up, and I've only had the device for one month.These problems seem to be common to all external drive makes. I had a Maxtor that experienced similar problems. I chalked that up to an old and flaky laptop. But with a brand new, high-end Dell desktop with Firewire and USB 2.0, I thought I would be in the clear. Not so.What should you, the reader, do about this? I believe the only realistic answer is the one recommended by a friend of mine: budget for two external backup drives. Swap them regularly so that when one fails you always have a reasonably fresh backup on another drive. It is a sad sign for the industry when you need backup drives for your back drives. But there you have it.

I just bought his today and am copying a 250Gig to the My Book. In the middle I forgot about the FAT32 and got mad that I couldn't copy my larger video files. After some Google research I found this command CONVERT G: /FS:NTFS (check it out for yourself). This automatically switched the drive to NTFS after a reboot without loosing my data I had spent hours backing up. So far a great lil' drive.

UPDATE:- The replacement worked fine and so far 3 yrs after (cross fingers) no issues with either of my WDs!The drive arrived and reported bad clusters from Windows. Tests using Western Digital's own utility initially reported bad sectors and asked to repair them - Now Im not a physics expert who knows magnetic theories quite well, but how do you "FIX" a bad sector?In either case it "fixed" it successfully but rerunning the same diagnostic test and 6 hours later it returned "error code 8 too many bad clusters found".Ive returned the item to amazon and they are shipping out another, let's see if this one is any better.. will keep you posted.

Setup was easy, plugged it and I was done. Transferring files are done quick enough and the hard drive goes into a sleep mode when not used within a given amount of time. If sending a file to the hard drive when in sleep mode, it starts up and is ready in about 5 seconds. I'm happy with my purchase and will update if anything goes wrong.One thing that bothers me somewhat is the amount of different sounds the drive makes. The sounds aren't exactly consistent, which worries me a bit. The sounds are quiet though, just the humming and ticking of a normal hard drive, but why the range? Is it trying to be a musical instrument?

I bought drive to backup my work files. Great design, fairly compact. No software included for backups so you have to provide your own. Worked fine for 1 month but drive failed. Would not power up.RMA process costly and at your expense. You must ship in anti-static bag (so save box). No communication or response to 4 e-mails I sent - never had a company be so unresponsive. Not only did I lose 1 month of backups but it cost me quite a bit to ship back.Recommend if you buy it to don't rely solely on it for at least a few months. You have a chance of losing your only copy of something if the drive fails. Hope replacement is more reliable.*Update* Replacement drive was new (not refurbished) and has worked fine ever since. I must have gotten a bad unit. Drive is pretty quiet and power up quickly and is pretty intelligent to power down when not it use. Will be buying Acronis True Image or Norten Ghost to back up images/quicker to restore system than just backing up files.

This hard drive was purchased to use to backup my home computer. So far so good. The transfer rate seems pretty good for being USB based and on the PC this was a plug-and-play device as advertised, so no cds to worry about.I did, however try to use this same device on a Macintosh (G3) computer and didn't have any luck. I assume the default format of the drive is the issue, but honestly I didn't have a lot of time to look into why the device was not recognized.Overall, I'd say this was an excellent value for the storage capacity. Although it's not meant for a portable drive, it is compact enough to sit next to your computer and not be an eyesore. I'd definitely buy again for my needs.

I have a 4 year old computer, whose hard drive is too small for current needs.I leave this on all the time and find myself useing it more and more.I cleaned up a LOT of space off my regular drive. Of course this can be said for any external drive.Specifically, this is nice. Installed with no problem, almost like a memory stick. It's very pretty and it barely takes up space. It makes little noise. I was worried it would be slow because of the size, but it seems to me to read just as fast as my regular drive.

I purchased a new 250GB computer after using up all the disk space on my 100 GB computer. I had used a Maxtor 120 GB external hard drive with the old computer. Now I needed a 250 GB external hard drive which I use as a dedicated backup for my new computer. That along with Norton's SAVE & RESTORE software I have the perfect combo for backing up my hard drive to the WD 250. Everything is easy to use and practically automatic. I use Norton SYSTEMWORKS with SAVE & RESTORE and the WDG1U2500 and I get perfect backup and recovery.

I received it initially as a gift, having lost info to LaCie and AcomData drives. Installation was very easy and it copied files pretty quickly.And the best part, it is really quiet. Not quiet as in "I can bearly hear it." When I say quiet I mean quiet as in silent. The sound does not increase very much when it is working hard at saving things. And its compact design it is easy to keep on my desk among items.I put 4 stars because I haven't had it long enough yet. Not pessimistic, just cautious.

Was easy to setup and connect. If you want the file format to be NTFS rather than DOS you need to reformat the drive. No backup software comes with the unit so you either need a version of XP or Vista with MS backup or will need to purchase software separetly. You can also purchase a different version of this unit with backup software included but it cost more. Unit has worked fine for a couple of weeks so far. Purchased this unit because reviews of some other products revealed disk crashes after some period of time.

It's pretty and works well so far. I can always can feel a strong amount of heat rising from the grate when I put my hand over it while the drive is being written to. There is also a light buzzing sound coming from this thing nearly all the time and sometimes it makes a high pitched sound. The latter sound is very annoying but if you use headphones a lot it's not so bad.Update: Despite a long history of scary power-down / turning-off sounds this drive has served me without giving me any problems. I would give it another star if I could.

I got it, plugged it in, and without any wait, I started saving my data from my overloaded pc into this external hard drive without any problems. It runs cooler than most other external hard drives, and I can hardly hear it working. It must be reformatted to NTFS in order to take advantage of its large capacity, and that is no problem, either.

This drive worked well for 2 weeks and then was no longer recognized by the computer (running Windows 2000, although I've read of a similar problem by another user under Windows XP). Without a driver from the manufacturer (which I can't find on the site) I can't access my data. A real pain, and a complete disappointment. This is my third difficulty with a WD drive (two different models of their portable drives won't work on two of my labtop computers because the designers pushed the power requirements from the USB2 connections and they wouldn't spin up, which I find is a common problem). I'm avoiding WD drives in the future.

I spent the past year digitizing my CD collection and when I outgrew my 200 gig internal hard drive I decided to go the external route. The My Book was a good choice. The drive is extremely quiet, takes up very little space, and does not get hot in normal use. I really like that the drive is smart enough to automatically go into stand-by when you turn off your P.C.The first thing you will want to do if you buy one is to delete the junk software that comes preinstalled on the disc. The second thing is to reformat the drive to use the NTFS file system, which is more reilable than FAT 32.The drive is not a speed demon but is more than adequate for streaming music. I recently bought a second one to backup the first. Unless you need the Firewire port, the Essential Edition should be adequate.

I ordered the Western external hard drive based on consumer reviews and wasn't disappointed. It suited my specific needs perfectly and was extremely easy to set up and transfer files to. I've hooked it up via a USB port and it functions as an ancillary hard drive whenever my desktop fires up. The lit on off switch allows me the option of leaving it on or shutting it off as the need requires. I will definitely recommend Western to any of my friends and will certainly purchase one of their products again in the future.
