I bought this after the Simpletech failed. This one works on my laptop without any problems. On my desktop, it works only when it feels like working. I am having a hard time getting a drive the will work consistently. To anyone that wants to buy these, I would suggest that get one that you can return without penelty. That way, if you try it out and have to return it, it won't cost you anything.......

I didn't even get a chance to use it.This is my second drive in a month.The first drive (dual interface) failed in a week.What's wrong with Western Digital?

I returned this product immediatly because 2 things:1) there is no backup software came with the drive, which means I have to pay extra$$$ to get one or I have to manually drag and drop2)No tech support, I emailed Western Digital and request for help, no reply at all.

We installed this external HD on a Dell computer. As most Dell customers will attest to, any time you talk to one of their representatives, they'll deny compatability with anything other than a Dell product. Well, I have upgraded the video card, power supply, and now added this HD to the computer with very liitle effort. This HD has performed perfectly for us.

Plug in and use it. As for the people who have had problems with it shutting off; if you have old/poor quality USB ports, the hard drive will not funtion properly because it shuts off when it is not 'plugged in' to a usb port. If you leave it plugged in to your pc, the hard drive will boot up along with your computer. Anyways, so far so good, been working well since I bought it.

Very nice unit. Recommended.Pro: Relativly quite. File corruption is usually concern with externals (especially DIY external enclosures) but not this one. Auto on/off feature keeps unit in sync with pc.Con: I like the 5 year warrenty of the Seagates; I wish more drive mfgs would follow suite. Only concern regarding 400GB is the price. As of 12/2006 you can get the 500GB for the same price as the 400GB. I got mine at St@ples for $99 Thanksgiving day sale.

I bought 2 of these, one in April and another in May. The first failed in August, the second in September. WD replaced them both, but then the first replacement quit in October. I have owned over a dozen Maxtor and Simpletech external USB and Firewire drives in the past without a single failure.

This is definitely the classiest looking external drive out there. It is super fast and worked great out of the box with my MacBook Pro and PC. I would be lost without it.

Western Digital is the Rolls Royce of Hard Drives. I have two 500GB My Book Hard Drives that I use constantly for backing up.Pros: A sleek looking Hard Drive with an enourmous capacity. Just plug in and you're ready to roll. Utility software is unneccessary to install. Drive switches on and off with your computer. Alternatively you can switch it off manually by pressing the large black button on the Hard Drive's spine. I have kept my Hard Drive's on for 12 hours straight. While the Hard Drive's did become warm to the touch, I failed to notice the over-heating that other reviewers spoke about.Cons: None really. Maybe the day will come when the Hard Drive will be powered by the computer - so that an extra power supply for each Hard Drive will prove unneccassay.

This is a great deal. I have a 6-year old Dell Dimension, started with Windows ME then upgraded to XP a few years ago. Just plugged it in, easy to install the software, no problems at all. Works like a charm!

PRETTY AMAZING!!!, NO NOISE, LOW HEAT, NO FAN, BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE AND DATABASE AND POWERFULL TRANSFER SPEEDS, IT TAKES USB 2, FIREWIRE 400 TO THE MAX NO CONS. ILL BUY NEXT TIME THE PRO, THAT WAY ILL HAVE A COOL LIBRARY.I DOWNLOAD LOTS OF ANIME SOMETIMES AS BIG AS 10 TO 5GB AND WHEN IM DONE DOWNLOADING IT, I TRANFER THOSE VIDEOS TO THIS HARDDRIVE IN LESS THEN 7 MIN, ON USB2 AND IN 5 MIN ON FIREWIRE 400, YUST IMAGINE WHAT WOULD BE LIKE ON THE PRO WITH FIREWIRE 800!!!

I purchased 2 at the same time. One was DOA and after the return process I attempted to daisy chain the 2 units per sell sheet. Can't do it and tech support was no help. I have had them 2 months and one unit runs fine. The other has become noisy and I'm certain will have to be replaced soon. Poor QC on these products.

Purchased a new WDG1U2500 on September 9, 2006. Had to have it replaced and mailed the unit to WD. The replacement was also defective and it was a REFURBISHED one. Returning a defective new unit and receiving a refurbished one in exchange is not right. I hope the second replacement will be a NEW one. Had to pay USPS $17.70 (includes insurance and tracking) for the first return. Hope to make positive comments and give better rating after receiving a replacement and being able to use it. At the moment I wish I had not purchased the unit.

Had the 160 Gb drive for over a month now, got it on special for about $90. Reformatted it into NTFS upon receipt and started backing up files from two old computers.The GOOD: it seems to be working fine, just plug-and-play, Windows XP does the rest.The BAD: (1) the drive does make some noise at times, not really expected from WD stuff (have had other of their products in the past, no complaints), (2) you cannot 'disconnect' the drive from XP at least 9 out of 10 times, as the drive still runs even though you're long done accessing it. I've tried to let it run to see if it would stop by itself and 30 mins. later, had to boot off my laptop before unplugging this thing... Cannot take any chance erasing the date inside, although they say it's safe..I might switch to another product soon if I cannot get any patches for the latter problem.

We recently bought these for storing additional data on workstations at my place of business. They have worked wonderfully and with a very small footprint take up very little space when space is an issue. Fast data transfer, virtually silent operation, and virtually non-existant heat generation, great product.Only few cons is the "utilities" that come pre-installed are not needed for business users and its an older version of Adobe Reader than is currently available, but those are hardly worth deducting a star.All in all these have been wonderful, will definetly consider WD products in the future.

This drive installed flawlessly on a new DELL Windows Vista machine. However, after two days, it disappeared. Still waiting for WD Tech help to respond to a message. The driver somehow got lost.

This 500 GB drive works well with a Mac via USB2, and is very quiet. For a Mac, there's no installation of drivers and no software required, it just works (like everything else on a Mac ;-). I've used it with two different Macs without problems. The USB2 interface is slower than Firewire 400 in actual use, but as a backup drive it's more than fast enough.

I'm on my third book and I haven't own it more than 6 months. The first one died after I unplugged it to move it to another location. It lit up but there was nobody home. Lost all my data. Second one just died the light just blinked on and off. Lost all my data again. Third drive, not taking any chances this time. I'm going sell it on ebay and cut my losses.

It worked all right for 2 days and then crushed my laptop ! My USB ports stopped working after that incident and never came back ! I dont really think that this was a coincidence.

Purchased this item back in September and have had no problems whatsoever. Simple to set up and begin using. All photos, movie clips, important papers, etc., are now backed up to this hard drive which can easily be transferred to my new computer. This came highly recommended and I have not been disappointed.

We bought 6 for our office as back-up drives for each pc. They are now around 6 months old and have never failed. They work flawlessly. I don't know why people say they have had crashes. We back up large projects daily and have never had an issue with any of them.I would highly recommend them to anyone considering an external hard drive.Just a update we still have the original 6 drives and after 18 plus months of heavy use none have failed...

This USB 2.0 external hard-drive was ready to use out of the box. It connected to the PC without any hitches, and the Windows XP Professional OS recognized it as a "Removable Drvie". And the drive is quiet, and the file-transfer speeds are quite acceptable. Overall, I am pleased with this product.
