Bought this after my LaCie took a crap. Apparently there was a defective heat problem with it...regardless it conked out and I made sure to replace it with one that could handle heat effectively and that would most likely last longer than a year. Western Digital has a good rep for drives, and this particular model has more holes in it than a cheese grater, which really helps disperse heat. So far it has worked great, runs quiet, smooth and independently. I love the auto/off feature...it really is nice not having to worry about turning it on and off. It is an external hard drive, but acts like its an original part of my laptop (turning on and off with it, and being recognized with no problems).

I have three of these drives, between about six months old and one year old. None of the drives has had problems, although the oldest one is probably the one that counts. I have previously built my own external drives with purchased enclosures and bare drives, but I couldn't beat the capacity and price combination on this product. On a laptop with a USB2 port these drives will backup or image a 50 gig drive in about an hour -- very nice. It is troubling to hear that some people are having bad drives shortly out of the box, but that has not been my experience.

Just as advertised... Plug and Play... The computer automatically recognized it and it was ready to use. I've had it for a couple of weeks now, NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. And it look great too! ;) Super-quite, fast enough. Western Digital makes great products, and this is definitely one of them

Pros-its been 2 weeks since Ive had it and it hasnt erased my dataCons-Must turn off computer to turn off harddrive-Sometimes isnt recognized by the computer-Inner ring is supposed to show how much space is left on the drive....it doesnt do that.-SUPPORT IS A JOKE. HAD TO CALL 6 TIMES IN 4 DAYS JUST TO BE PUT ON HOLD. I WAS ON HOLD FOR 20 MINUTES AND THE GUY WAS ANYTHING BUT HELPFUL.Bottom Line-I guess its not that bad, but I would recommend purchasing from another company, my luck with them has been anything but good. But the price is pretty reasonable, but just be careful if you decide to buy from WD.

This hard drive works well for what I need it for- backups and media storage. Transfer speed is fine, considering it is a USB 2.0. Looks great and fits nicely on my desk at school. I highly recommend this product for its amount of storage and its physical size.

So, for less than $200 I could have 500GB? This is not a difficult decision. It arrived within 5 days and was simple to install -- plug in the power cord, and the USB cord to the computer. It comes formatted with fat32 file system. Seemless with all Windows operating systems. If you need file sizes >4GB and are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista, you will probably want to re-format the HD with the NTFS -- an easy process with supplied directions.One of the best features of this hard drive is that the on/off is controlled by the computer. There's no need to manually turn the HD on or off. Sweet.

I bought this for my father after his notebook suffered a major hard disk malfunction, so that he'll have a backup system in the future. He's been very pleased with it, and hasn't had any difficulty getting it set up, despite not being strong computer user.

I have only had this about a month, but I haven't had any problems wth it yet. It looks good, didn't require any software to get it to work, and I didn't have any problems with setting it up.Was going to get it from Amazon, but over the couple days of looking at hard drives, the price on amazon went up about $20. Ended up getting it at Sam's Club, though the price on Amazon has now dropped down to about what it was before.I'm giving it 5 starts cause I have no reason not to. I'm reviewing the hard drive, not Amazon's pricing policy.

I am no computer person, and don't intend to underate this product at all.I purchased this item a week ago and right now, the machine is doing the backup through WD's own backup program. I know some of 'hightech'person here suggested not to use it, but I just don't have time to figure out such a complecated process to avoid this software. Quite modern design which remins me of all apple-like product grabs my attention, but that's it. The noise it produces is very annoying. Most of all, it takes too much time to read. I was very debating between Maxtors Turbo III and this, finally decided not to sweat on the casche speed. Maybe I was wrong.No matter how I am not fully satisfied with this product, I have to stick with this because I got several video projects to go.

WD is a well-regarded brand and they will be shipping me a new drive, but after the thing crashed on me after only a couple of months, I will no longer trust my data to WD. I have had Maxtor and Seagate drives (generally much cheaper) that have been running for years.

Pros -The set up is as easy as advertised. Just plug it in and it's ready to go.It looks pretty cool if you care about aesthetics.It's small.Cons -Noisey. It's like having another PC on your desk. It's easily as noisey as my laptop.Slow. Over the USB interface it will take a lot of time to back up your stuff for the first time.No software included. You need to be organized about your backing up of data, remember what you've added etc.

We run a number of these drives to back up off of our Mac-based network. I see a number of problems in the other reviews, but in the last year or so we haven't seen any problems with the Mybook drives. They run extremely quiet for an external drive and work as advertised. We are of course running 3rd party backup software - have not tried anything included with the drive - but they work like a charm.

The hard drive works well, it writes and retrives well. However, this was my first experience with an external hard drive and there is no info telling how to do more that install it. I am using it to store photos and had to consult an outside source in order to learn that I had to format it to get it to do more that act like a back up. Once it was formated it has performed very well.

What a great product. Worked exactly as it should on first attempt. File transfers and retrieval are fast - can not distinguish from the hard drive. My requirements were for added storage space and not automatic backups, thus, this serves exactly the purpose, and at a fantastic price. I would strongly recommend this sleek looking, quite and efficient storage device to anyone looking for an external hard drive.

I found the Western Digital external drive easy to setup and use. I also like the way it blends in as a book on a bookshelf. I intended to use the drive as a backup to my destop computer hard drive and as a backup for my laptop hard drive. The only thing I wish would have been bundled with the software is some backup software so I could perform full backups, incremental backups with little or no human intervention. Overall, I have been very happy with the drive, but if you do a lot graphics work or need to save and retrieve large video files on it, you are probably better off purchasing an external firewire drive.

I paired this drive up with the Linksys NSLU2 as a network drive and it has worked out very well. It powers on/off automatically with the Linksys and it also spins down when there has been no activity for a while. No problem with read/write so far.Four stars only because I think one year warranty is bit short.

Well, I received this hard drive, only to have it crash on me one week later and have it be essentially useless. I wouldn't use this as advice not to buy as this can happen with hard drives, but I can't help but say that I was very disappointed. Fortunately, the vendor was very good about understanding and was willing to exchange it for a new one (of course, that doesn't help me get my data back!).

I initially bought a SimpleTech SimpleShare 500Gb drive. Copying the files on the network took forever and on the second day there was some serious knocking which lead to a total crash of the drive. I decided to switch back to a USB HDD . . . the research lead me to this WD MyBook hard drive. It is a very quiet device, great speed, great looking too. I love it.

Need to reformat to NTFS. (I am not using the tools in the disk)* the enclosed firewire cable is not the type for laptops.

I have a WD 160 MyBook Essential, which I enjoyed as it worked flawless for over a year. In the last 24 hours it has stopped powering up, completely dead. This is VERY distressing when you have "put your life on it" as they advertise. Could happen to any brand, but be aware there is an unhappy crowd of owners for this product. I will spend more money next time and buy higher grade components for this critical storage.
