I read the review for this product here at the amazon and bought it! I must say that I am very happy with my purchase. It was easy to set up and it is very quiet. So far I have not one complaint against this product!

Like most reviews on Amazon, it would appear that some reviewers have purchased the product, had one issue during installation and then rushed to write a bad review.As we say in Geekdom, RTFM! Well, as a last resort anyways, lol.I purchased this drive for my Intel iMac and it works perfectly. I was backing up my essential files within minutes. Unlike some comments here, I didn't need to reformat the drive. Just plug in the firewire cable, flick on the juice and you're good to go.Powering down was easy; just hit the button on the front of the device (for those that couldn't work it out, it's in the middle of the glowing blue rings).The operation is almost silent, more so than the Maxtor external drives I have used in the past. Plus it looks pretty damn sexy sitting on the desk :)

I got this drive because my 250 GB version was getting close to being full. So now I use this as my primary data storage drive and leave it in all the time and use my 2-250 GB as backup drives and unplug them when not in use. I have had this drive for about 6 months now and it has never given me any problems and I have had the 2-Western Digital WDG1U2500 My Book Essential Edition 250 GB Hard Drive for over a year with no problems. They are pretty small and fit nicely on a shelf near my computer and I can't even tell they are running over the computer fan so they are pretty quite. External hard drives are much better than internal, if your computer dies you still have everything right there and can plug it into another computer any time you want without opening it up, ripping things apart, setting jumpers etc. So if you are looking for a small, reliable, quite external drive, look no further.

This product is a great hdd. It works well and looks great. Once the computer recognizes the external hdd, it transfers data at speeds that will blow you away. My only complaint is that I wish it had a FireWire port.

This hard drive is quiet, has a pleasant circular on/off light which turns itself off when my computer hibernates, and takes up little space on my desk. I respect Western Digital's reputation for quality and I am pleased with the hard drive. My only negative is that the HD had to be formatted for Vista and came with no instructions or format disk to guide me. I finally had to call Western Digital and be "outsourced" for help in installation.

Very disappointed in this hard drive. I use it to back up both my PC and my wife's laptop. I recently had to reformat the PC and when I turned to the hard drive, it could not be found by XP. Arrrgggghhhh. It easily reformatted itself with the WD software but that does me little good as all of my kid's video's were on the drive as a backup. So I thought I was being clever by having a backup to my PC hard drive only to discover that I needed a backup to my backup. Beware

I purchased the WDG1U5000 as a backup to my existing iBook and my external 120GB SmartDisk Drive (which I also can't say enough about). I plugged in the 500GB, turned it on, my Mac found the drive and then I dragged and dropped 100GB of music and photos over my USB2.0 (took about 2/5hrs to copy). The process couldn't be easier or for a geek like me, more enjoyable.A great product, a great price and delivery was a snap - as usual, all from Amazon.Update - July 2007 - as time went on my digital capacity expanded and I was soon up to 125GB. When I went to add more music or photos to my hard drive, I noticed that my Mac would only display and allow me to use 149GB of my 500GB drive. I understand it has something to do with the formatting of the drive but after trying my best to fix it and trying to contact western digital multiple times - they offered ZERO help - I had to return it. Amazon was nice enough to take it back outside of policy...& I remain a highly satisfied Amazon customer.

The name of the product nails it: essential. If you're looking for an external hard drive that hooks up with a firewire connection or you describe yourself as completely computer illiterate, then this may not be what you want. But if, like me, you are at least somewhat competent with a PC and a simple USB hookup is all you need, then you can't find a better value. Five hundred gigabytes is a good deal of storage, and I've been using it to store backups of all my documents and pictures, as well as weeks' worth of videos. I highly recommend this hard drive.

The purpose of these is reliable media storage. I've had two die on me in under a year. I've lost hundreds of GB of personal media, family pictures, artwork and scripts. I am very unhappy with the drive and will not be purchasing another.

I Was Absouletly Dissapointed With this Product. It Broke Down After 2-Week's And After Seeking Online Assistance From Western Digital (who promised response in 24-hrs) the responded a week after to say. Because I Did'nt Bombard Them With E-mail's, It Appears (to them) That The Problem Was Solved!I Eventually Bought An Empty Housing And Put The Drive (Internal) From The Western Digital Essential Edition 250 GB Hard Drive And I Now Use It.I'm Told By A Local Distributer That It's A Regular Complaint.

This external hard drive is being used to transfer old 3.5in. floppy drive data to a central storage. I was really surprised how easy it is to use, and I bought it based on the previous reviews about the ease of use. The connections are obvious, but there is also a graphic for this. With Windows XP-SP2, it set itself up, and now works just like a flashdrive that needs an outlet. It is only the old floppy drive that is slow in transfering the data, because it is incredibly fast otherwise. And it is an attractively-designed enclosure.

My Book works great and looks good. I like that it recognizes when my computer is in sleep mode and goes to sleep itself to conserve energy. It works great with my laptop, and seems to back up my entire hard drive quickly.Pros:Backs up quickly.Looks good.Goes to sleep when my computer goes to sleep.Cons:Didn't come with back-up software or one-touch button, but not a big deal to me since I found free software that does the job easily.

My Macbook would not recognize this drive on Firewire. It worked on the USB cable, but I didn't buy it to use with USB, did I? The "knowledge base" on WD's website was no help. The nice customer rep in India immediately offered to send a new Firewire cable (suggesting that they were aware of the problem) but it hasn't arrived in two weeks. My retailer swapped it for a new one which had the same problem. One tech there considered it a "known problem" with Macs. Maybe nice for PCs, but then you could buy a cheaper unit without Firewire. I'm returning it to buy something else.

....my computer would have recognized it. Spent hours trying to get it to work. Reading someone elses review, I now see that I'm not the only one. Something about certain adapter cards not being compatable. Very annoying, wish they said that on the box. Returned it to Bestbuy. Got a LACIE hard drive-much cheaper and worked right away.

The unit goes into a hibernation mode after an undetermined amount of time. There are no settings or software to control it. Most of the time you will need to sit and wait for it to repsond if anything such as Windows Explorer needs to access all of your drives. This product is a dog.

I have had two WD 'caviar' drives fail with normal usage. they were back-up drives but still they lost things that couldn't be recovered. To be fair, this is NOT a caviar, which is why i decided to try one, but lately as it seems to be slower and more noisy, I'm getting very worried that it could follow down the same WD path. I'm going to perhaps buy a Seagate Barracuda and compare rather than put my unearned trust here.

I bought this drive as an external storage unit. I set it up as an encrypted drive in Windows XP. Even when encrypted the drive is fast. Ok, not fast enough for video editing but for basic tasks. The drive looks good and it's small so it doesn't take up much room.One day I enter my password to access the encrypted drive and nothing happens. The next day at bootup the drive just clicks nonstop. It wasn't even recognized by the BIOS. I got it to be recognized once but it can't be accessed. I've tried everything.The drive inside the unit is a Western Digital SATA drive. 3200JS. I'm not sure what could have happened. Perhaps it overheated. This is the first time I ever had a drive die on me. Strangely, a week before I had a Maxtor drive on a dedicated (remote) server.I lost 200gb of data on this drive and did not back it up. I just can't believe the drive lasted only six months. Maybe even less. Maybe it's still under warranty. I just know that if I buy another external drive it will be a larger one with a fan and a way to cool itself better. Maybe that's not what happened. Also, I do take good care of my drives. I use defrag and scan utilities every week or so.

It's refreshing to research a product and find that it actually exceeds your expectations. It was simple to install and I immediately backed up my digital photos and scheduled a weekly backup My backups are now automated and I no longer worry about losing my computer's hard drive. I chose to immediately reformat the drive using NTFS rather than FAT, and this was easily done (CONVERT m: /FS:NTFS). The Premium edition includes the backup software preloaded to the drive. I have already recommended to my friends.
